Lousy store hours & the store looks like a large unsorted mess. How does it stay jn business?

A fantastic mostly CD store, though they carry some DVD as well. The owner(can't remember his name) is VERY nice, and I live talking to him about musicians, bands, music, etc every time I visit. A refreshing opposite, from the jerk owner Vintage Vinyl in Evanston has(won't get into him any further here, but if you want to know more about that place look up my review on them). And I wish all music store employees and owners, were as nice as this guy is! Definitely stop here, if you happen to go out to this part of Oak Park and are either looking for CDs, or even just like to have good conversations with others about music. Great little CD shop, mostly used, cool selection across all genres. We went in looking for two particular CDs; the man behind the counter was able to find both within minutes. Very reasonable prices. A bit difficult to get around, as there are boxes everywhere. It's the sort of shop where you go hunting for treasure. read more

I've been to several dozen stores , all over the country . Snd more than a dozen in Europe. Chicago Digital is always at the top and is one the best place for CD's anywhere worldwide . read more

Interesting CD store. I was day trippin on the look out for Doris Day CD's. Had no idea how hard it could be to find specific tracks by this lady, since I needed the music asap. Chicago digital has mostly used CDs and other types of media. Behind the counter & glass you can see some new stuff, not sure if it's unopened. I called ahead hoping to talk to someone and lucky for me the guy that answered the phone knew alot about what they had in stock and quoted a number of Cd's, 30 - 40 of her recordings. The store front and interior do not match, at all. The store front is inviting and begs you to wonder what could be inside. The inside beckons you to ask, WTF? There are a few nude statues throughout the store and long shelves with old, dingy, dirty looking CD sleeves. Each with its CD story book; the clerk has got a decent database for his purposes; just hasn't gotten it set up to show the correct stock. Does he have some rare and unique items sure. But the place is dumpy and luckily; for us in alphabetical order. Well, somewhat. Interesting find we'll say. An hour of looking plus two Doris day compilation Cd's have now made the recipient a happy guy. I'm guessing the counter guy is the owner (?) since he was nonchalant about his smoking habit. The staff are pretty odd, but the selection is fantastic. Most of the staff know a lot about music, and it's worth it to ask any of them, "So what are you listening to these days?" or "Who's your favorite?" When trying to track down anything on CD that you think is impossible to find, call them. Ask for Chris. He'll take care of you. read more

More used cd's in one store than you will ever see anywhere in the United States. Huge classical and jazz sections. Giant Rock and R&B section. Large blues and world sections. Soundtracks, country, folk , electronica, new age etc. Dvd's used and new. More used and new box sets than any superstore has. How he fits so much in such a small store is amazing! I agree with the previous reviewers, this place is really no fun to browse in unless you know what you are looking for but Chris (the owner) is knowledgable and has rare CD's. I wish he sold Vinyl than he would be king. I am sure many people have dropped a grand there over the years especially since most of his bootlegs range from $31 to $70 all the way to $125 for just one CD or double set. I am glad to see that he is still in business after most music shops have folded (especially since he only carries CD's). I recall one time when I did not see a copy of a CD on the floor, I asked him and he went to his stock room and came out with it. I was amazed since it was not a very common CD or one that a store would stock, I mean it was something availiable but say if you went to FYE they would probably have to order it. A few years ago I remember being there with a friend and seeing a Michael Bolton CD for 75 cents and I made a joke to the owner and said "Michael Bolton for 75 cents" and he said "Do you think I have overpriced him?" Not sure I get this place... maybe it's just not for me. Stocks CD's, box sets, and videos from what I could tell (no vinyl), and seems to specialize in Jazz and Classical, with an adequate selection of Rock as well. All of the CD's are displayed as Amazon info pages printed out and folded into a plastic sleeve with price written on it... not friendly for browsing in the slightest, and pretty annoying. can do the same thing from the comfort of my couch, in a much more user-friendly format. When I go into a store I want to touch the product and see the artwork, etc. I'd venture to guess from other reviews this store would be better if you're looking for something specific, but definitely not for browsing. read more

One of the best music stores around. I'm a huge jazz buff and the only place that has a better jazz selection in the Chicago area is the Jazz Record Mart in downtown Chicago. This place is all compact discs, so if you're searching for vinyl you're not going to find it here. That being said, their selection is amazing for pretty much any genre - and they carry pretty much EVERY genre of music. I find it a bit unethical to buy CD's from your consumers - recent new releases in mint condition - and only offer $1 for them, and then turn around and sell them for upwards of $9 to $11 used, almost to the new sealed priced. A 220% increase in profit is a bit much. Add on an extra $1 or two at least. Also, the place is a mess. If you do not have any eye sight issues, you will after trying to browse for stuff in this store. Very disorganized. read more

I've been going here annually every time I'm on vacation to the Midwest. Every time I go here they can't locate the most rare/expensive/collectible CD I find in the soundtrack section...and at least two times I've found it listed on Amazon for far more than the price the jacket at the store listed it for if the owner could have found it behind the counter. I don't trust these guys as far as I can through them after these encounters, and will NEVER shop at this store again. There's no way that three trips in three separate yearscan yield the same results without wondering about the business ethics involved when something like this happens. read more

I love Chicago Digital. I'm an old customer who has found some of the most hard to find music I've ever searched for there. That, to me , sums up a store's "rating". The bottom line is this: Can you find what you're looking for there? The answer is, in the vast majority of cases, hell yes! The owner is a guy named Chris who is very knowledgeable about music of different genres. However, my being a jazz fan and his affinity for the same makes my visit there a treat. Not only do I get to find what I'm looking for but I also get to talk music with someone who knows about it and has an opinion that comes from that knowledge. For me, that makes the experience of shopping at Chicago Digital better than most other places where you can buy music. I'd recommend taking a trip through it's aisles. If the music is all you care about then that's the place to go. read more

Store is disappointing. I came from Wisconsin as part of a family visit to check out this store. True, they are one of the few CD stores around but it is frustrating looking through their stock. The booklets are in sleeves and if you find something you have to ask the clerk and he gets the item from the back of the store. The problem is that things are not that well organized. I was looking for classical items and they did have a few new items and others, I guess unopened. I gave up in the used classical section. A real mess. I also found that their prices are not anything to get excited about. They mostly charge list price and I saw items I could get on Amazon for much less. If you are looking for classical stuff this store is OK, not great. I long for the days of Tower Records and the others. read more
