Back in the early 2000s, we (grammar school friends) use to come here before our visit to the h.i.p. mall across the way. Talk about nostalgia ultra, Frank! The vibe and smell is still the same. It's cool that they are still up and running given how much access to music has changed in two decades. They even have the old listening stations (forgot about those, y'all!) although they were just for show and no longer can actually listen. It was kind of a museum-like moment. Strange! Needless to say, I time traveled recently and it was cool. Service still sucks as much as it did back then but they're obviously doing something right!

Excellent service and outstanding product selection. Large selection of vintage vinyl and collectables for your music library.

Rolling Stones has incredible prices on CDs and DVDs. What are those? Well, sit down on grandad's lap and let me tell you about the 90's! Of course, if you didn't know what a compact disc was, the thousands of shiny discs hanging from the ceiling at Rolling Stones would be a good primer. (see my "forbidden" inside store pic! Seriously, an employee practically tackled me when I took a picture and said inside pics are not allowed). Actually, the employee did pounce, but he was super apologetic and nice about it. The Security Guard on the other hand...he wasn't big on small talk, but nice enough. Still, I had a handful of CDs and DVDs in plain view, doesn't that mean I'm going to purchase them and not expect a five-finger discount? Security, seriously? What is this, Mallrats? I came to RS with a small list in my head of somewhat newer CDs by recent artists to purchase. Arcade Fire at basement prices, yes! Doves' release from a year ago? Asked the security guy because Doves didn't even have its own category card. Nope, that one was gone last year. See, Rolling Stones doesn't keep any past CDs by recent artists, just great prices on New Releases and even better prices on has beens. Rolling Stones' bread and butter is $5.99 deals on reissues of your favorite artists of the 60s-80s. They also carry an impressive selection of live concert DVDs for around $9.99. I'll certainly be back to Rolling Stones' but will leave the camera at home so I don't get tackled next time.

Rolling Stones was my go-to place when I still bought CDs pretty often. I visited a few months ago and was surprised to see how much their collection has thinned. CDs are on the pricey side in comparison to what you can pay for them online. Thankfully, they still have sale bins near the front of the store. I won't really bother to look past the sale bins, though.

Any questions were answered, no weird "why is this person asking questions" vibes from the workers as the seems to be a trend nowadays where people don't think people will ask them questions at their job. They have a HUGE downstairs of somewhat cutout section prices, really $3 and up, but $10 for 3. Plus they have a turntable downstairs to cue up. Upstairs lots of inventory also, even lots of stuff outside. Just a diggers wet dream here. I got into Alchemist vibes here finding some Spanish singers records for the first time, now to collect. Elio Roca, Nelson Ned, and other rare artists like Pacific Gas and Electric. Now more stuff to collect! My specialty.

Unlike most stores with retro content, the workers were young and friendly. Maybe it's an overgeneralization but I usually expect any antique technology store to employ anti-social experts which is usually just fine with me. I would rather someone know their stock and the answer to by esoteric questions rather than someone with a fun personality. However, these two were very nice, and did seem to know pertinent stuff, and tolerated me singing along (badly) with the LP they were playing.. I got four old CDs, one which I just almost bought for $20 on Amazon for $2.00 TOTAL.

And the prices are really great, as well. The owner(I forget his name) was really awesome to talk to, and explained a lot about the store to me. Including the record/band/artist reference book in the front, where those artist/band and album name books used to be periodically mailed out to his record store and other stores, by a certain company. Though from what he told me, that company stopped producing those reference books by the early 2000s, sadly to say. The unfortunate thing is that too many other Chicago record stores seem a little overpriced IMO for their used records, such as for example Rattleback Records in Andersonville(Chicago) and Rediscover Records(Elgin). I'm glad this store wasn't like that for being overpriced for used records, and actually OTOH was pretty affordable. Their prices for used CDs, DVDs, and tapes was decent, as well. Yes no doubt for some people this store may be slightly out of the way. But I'd say for darn sure if you do like browsing in a record store, you should visit here at least once in your life! I do like how the inside of this store still felt pretty old school in its inside look, as well. And probably little changed, from when(I think) it first opened in the 1970s.
