I would not have gotten rid of all my (amazing) albums if I knew Vinyl and record players would make a comeback. The album I bought for a 13 year old child was $35. not exactly what I remember paying. Service was meh..I would think in that kinda place they would make a little conversational effort, but it was just a guy you couldn't really even see because the counter where you pay was so elevated. (maybe my 6' husband could see him, but I sure couldn't.) read more

Great selection of new and used vinyl in all genres, from Rock, Folk, and Jazz to Country and Classical. Smaller selection of cds. The prices on some of the older rock lps seemed on the higher end of reasonable, but ... it's your choice! But I'd pay a small premium for the ability to fully inspect before buying!! (I understand they also discount larger purchases.) Great in-store music and friendly staff make for a pleasant shopping or browsing experience. Whether your looking for $1 records, new releases, rare records or even classical, this is the place to go. They have a great selection of new releases and used vinyl at excellent prices. They know the market and don't over price their records just because they have a retail store. I first ran into them at the old Palatine Wolff's flea years ago and have been a loyal customer ever since. You even can find a selection of collectables and posters. There is simply no reason to go anywhere else. No matter how often you go they always have new stuff. You also will also not find a more knowledgeable staff anywhere. This record store is fairly new, having opened about a month and a half ago. As a result, I've only been there once thus far, and so these are my initial impressions. The guys who run the shop are very friendly--if you've been to any of the local record shows in the area, you will find that you might already know them. They also have been running an online version of the business for a while now, so the storefront version of the store that I am reviewing here is essentially just their "latest edition." Thus far, the store is rather nicely set up. They have decent prices on Rock, Classical, and Jazz Records, and also a pretty nice selection of LPs within each of these sections. Prices are well in line with "bricks and motor" stores in the area, like Dusty Groove and Reckless, rather than Ebay-centered, like say, Mile Long in Wheaton or (ridiculously so) Shuga Records. They also have a .50 clearance record section that contains selections comparable to what you might find in the same section at one of the local area Half Price Books locations. The Classical section in particular stands out as being quite nicely stocked. You will find a range of types of music, from symphonies to concertos. Each is broken into a different section. Jazz and Rock are also pretty nicely stocked up, while the World music section is a nice find you don't always see other places. Also nice is the selection of reel to reel tapes they have, as well as the small, but well-priced CD selection. Overall, they rate well versus other stores in the area, whether within Chicago-proper or out in the suburbs. read more

Stumbled upon this li'l gem of a shop researching vinyl in the NW suburbs of Chicago and so stoked I found it. It's tucked away rather inconspicuously in a strip mall and super easy to miss. It's not exactly ginormous in size but it amply makes up in the quality the shopkeeper has curated. While there is a heavy emphasis on rock and pop (not complaining about that mind you...), there is still a good bit of jazz, classical, world music and a healthy selection of soul. Prices are relatively reasonable for vintage vinyl in decent condition (moreso than most of the vintage record shops in Chicago) - I walked away with a healthy stack of original '60s pop and rock titles for about 50 bucks and was happy with my mini-spree. Shopkeeper is a cool guy who is quite knowledgeable and fun to chat with. Definitely worth a visit if you are a vinylhead. read more

Record Wonderland is a great new shop in the Northwest suburbs. I've come in a handful of times now, and I've got to say that the two owners are really nice and helpful, always welcoming. The store itself is extremely well organized. It's easy to move around the store and browse, everything is labeled nicely. I've noticed the front counter is always a bit messy, with stacks of albums waiting to be put out. Although, I don't mind, because this means that new stuff is always coming through their doors! :) They have a wide selection of genres, but do tend to focus mainly on rock and jazz. They sell mostly used albums, with a few represses and new releases mixed in. This means that you may have some trouble finding a particular title, but it's all about frequent visits and patience. :) Everything is graded well and the best part about Record Wonderland... THE PRICES! Fair if not competitive with other stores in the area. I've made some great finds at this shop and will definitely be coming back. read more

I've found everything from Pet Sounds to Mercury Living Presence recordings, all of them in excellent condition.
