Back in March Me and my family planned on getting donuts for Saturday morning, so being relatively new to the area, I just type in donuts near me and I look for the one with the best reviews. So I decided on rollen. When I show up I didn't expect much, but as I ordered I noticed how fresh everything was, and I watched them glaze all the donut holes in front of me, so of course I had to add some to my order. Meant to buy apples at the market next door - saw a line out the door of the donut shop & somehow ended up with 6 of the absolute best donuts I have EVER tasted! The glazed donuts were soft & easily squished with perfect-tasting glaze, the maple-glazed donut was amazing and the old-fashioned glazed were grade-A in every respect. A friend made the comment that Rollen Donuts has the best apple fritters in the world and I'm sad to report that I arrogantly snorted at him. "The best apple fritter in Merced **maybe**, but not the world. Merced doesn't have the best *anything* in the world." Well we got up nice and early one morning and got into Rollen just as the fritters were coming out of the hopper and being glazed with sugar. I took a still hot one and bit into the thin, crispy, greasy, sugary shell and hit pay dirt: a light, moist, filling with real bits of apple....the holy grail of apple fritter-dom. Sadly I have to report I left Rollen Donuts that weekend 15lb heavier and kind of sick for the next two days....but my soul was revived and refreshed. Now I plan all family trips around trying to figure out ways to pass through Merced at 7am. I used to be of the misguided opinion that a donut was a donut, which was perhaps quite tragically spawned from the same train of thought as that of Florida's legendary poet laureate, Vanilla Ice, who was once famously quoted as saying (but by no means coining) the immortal phrase of "a hole is a hole." The phrase would have been wholly apropos had Mr. Van Winkle been referring to donut holes. Alas, it's safe to deduce that he was in fact referring to holes that did not involve donuts of any kind. So to anyone who argues that all donuts are created equal... rubbish I say! I present to you: the apple fritter. Good gawd, this is good. Just the right amount of sugar and apple goodness, but what really makes this hand out a serious beat down to the competition is the highly nuanced (nuance in a donut review?), sugary crispiness. That extra little crispness you experience as you take a bite just adds another layer of texture to the soft, moist breading and bits of apple. All of the other donuts (maple bars, jelly, old fashioned, glazed, etc) that they have to offer are all outstanding and have that "extra little something" to set it apart from the Dunkin Donuts of the world, but their apple fritters are unquestionably the pièce de résistance of their little shop. For the people who partially judge the quality of ethnic restaurants by the number of patrons whose ethnicity mirrors that of the food, I've concluded that these same people probably judge the quality of a donut shop by the number of police officers who frequent the place. Perhaps it's because Rollen Donuts is rather small and most customers do take out, but I haven't witnessed very many of Merced's finest frequenting the place. Please don't let that discourage you. Cops or no cops, Rollen Donuts make donuts of the highest caliber. read more

You really can't go wrong with anything they offer, but it's a shame if you miss out on their regular glazed. The doughnuts and croissants are always super fresh! I've came here super early morning and later in the day and the taste is still super fresh.I love the ham and cheese croissant. I grew up in Merced, and my family has always raved about these donuts. I decided to stop in one night, and the store was illuminated as if open, but the door was locked. I knocked several times and was astonished at the audacity of the man behind the counter who stared at me and refused to open the door. I did not realize that they were not yet open, but he very rudely informed me of that by spitting out a crude remark saying that I should know how to read a closed sign. I was not only embarrassed by this, but I was more insulted than anything. I will not be giving this establishment any business because of their terrible customer service, as I returned when they opened and received the same rude treatment. I was craving donuts the day after Christmas. Everywhere in Merced was literally closed! So I ended up yelping for any donut shop that was open. This one popped up and I decided to drive by, hoping it would be open. Luckily it was! Located in a not to friendly neighborhood, but geez...they're donuts are definitely worth it! I got their mix dozen donuts for about $12. I ordered my all time fave, crumb donuts, and a whole bunch of random ones. When I got into the car, I started eating my crumb donut. Oh geez! I gotta say that it was soft and still fresh! It literally melted in my mouth! My second donut was the same as well! I was so in love! It reminded me of one of my favorite donut shops in Redding, CA. They definitely satisfied my donut cravings that morning. Customer service wasn't the best, but I got in and out with my goodies and that's all I wanted.
