Writing this review as I'm eating this First of all, I understand this is a new restaurant but walking in I immediately sensed that th management is fucking terrible. Only one of the server knows what she's doing, there's more people in the back, in the kitchen then outside serving the customers, and I have no idea what they are doing back there considering there's orders jus piled up waiting to be bagged. Some servers also are just obviously under trained, they clearly new more training. The food are mediocre but has potential , they sound so good on paper, for example I ordered the clay pot veggie and sausage rice right. The harshness and the tast of the meat is good, rice is nice n hard not soggy like it's supposed to, but it's fucking tasteless! My mom can make better veggie sausage rice in 15min than however long they took. The steamed pork ribs with black bean sauce is the most tasteless pork ribs I've eaten since I came to America. LIKE ITS DISAPPOINTING AND TASTELESS I HONESTLY THINK THEY ARE PUTTING A BAD NAME ON CHINESE FOOD. The very next door is 88baobao, which is also a Chinese ran Chinese restaurant they have no issue giving me a good meal in 15mins while still having professionally enough services to me to enjoy. This new Hongkong merced just opened and me and my husband tried it for the first time. The order took awhile to come and so much flies that it really bothers me. The server just smiled when we mentioned it. It's so unsanitary. I only like the duck cause it is freshly cooked and juicy, but ended up making it to go cause of the flies, there's just too many like you're in a wet market. They need to do something about it. Under new ownership since mid April 2024. I had to check it out and wasn't disappointed. 1st of all the prices were great. About $10 a dish. Amy ordered the chicken soup and we loved it. The broth was very flavorful, plenary of chicken and noodles, huge bowl for two and cost $8. I ordered Moo Shu Pork. Huge plate of tasty Moo Shu, very good however the pancakes were store bought and were terrible, thats fine, I just ate the Moo Shu without the pancake $10. We also ordered the Chow Mein pork, that was a little different for us. It was not like any chow mein I've ever seen. It was a plate of noodles with brown gravy sauce with 4 slices of pork on top. It was pretty tasty but didn't look or taste like any other chow mein I've had previously. We also had a pot of hot green tea. Take a look at my pictures. It was a lot of food for $30. This was an awful experience. The waitresses were very rude. I requested another drink multiple times and received nothing, however, I was billed for multiple drinks. Great food, I love the crispy noodles under the chow mien. They give you a lot of food too. always enough for left overs the next day. The service is great too. They are very nice and helpful. I don't have use of my left hand and when they brought over the to go boxes, they didn't even ask, they just started placing my leftovers into the box. That was super nice. Ordered the Kung pow chicken lunch special, didn't receive the soup that was supposed to come with the meal . The food was absolutely horrible. The noodles chow mein was cold. The Kung pow chicken had a weird taste to it even though the vegetables were kinda fresh so all in all the only thing good about the dish was the vegetables. I believe the New Hong Kong has taken a giant step up from the previous ownership. I've eaten there twice now. Everything tastes very fresh. Kung Pao Beef, Lemon Chicken, Pork Foo Young, BBQ Pork, Special Fried Rice, and Chicken Wings were ordered. The price was great for the quality and quantity of the food. I didn't like old Hong Kong or many of the other Chinese restaurants in town. This is an improvement and worth the try. The front staff are friendly and kind. I've had issues ordering over the phone both times. That is my only issue. I end up leaving a dish off because they didn't understand me. read more

I have been going to this restaurant for 25+ years and have seen many ownership changes. However, the current owner has completely ruined the wonderful reputation of this restaurant. The pork chow mein was horrible. Totally different ingredients that were inedible which ended up in the garbage. Chun King in a can that you get at the grocery store is better and that's not saying much. I will never go there again and do not recommend it to anyone. 04/13/24 So we heard this place is under new ownership and new cooks so we wanted to give it a try! I ordered the combo plate with egg foo young and my BF ordered the chow fun. The chow fun was alright but the combo plate was disgusting. The egg food young had very little flavor and I asked for soft chow mein but my order was half crispy and had almost no flavor again. Really disappointed since I wanted to give this place another try but I would definitely not recommend those 2 dishes :( read more

Picked up Hong Long tonight for my husband for Father's Day. We were sorely disappointed with the new recipes. The moo goo gai pan was missing several of the veggies it is known to have. No bok choy, no water chestnuts, and the sauce was more overpowering than it was in the past. The fried shrimp is now tempura battered rather than panko and those were all better, no shrimp. These are dishes we've ordered for 25 years and they aren't the same. Sad to say we likely won't be back This doesn't mean their food was bad, just not what we remember or enjoy. read more

Excellent service and the food I've had has been top notch. I love the Char Su pork as appetizer and main dishes are fantastic. The sweet and sour pork is succulent. My family and I decided to take a family trip to Merced on 8/19/18, to take a walk down memory lane. We came to this restaurant as my maternal grandmother loved Hong Kong Restaurant. My mother informed the family that grandmas favorite was Shrimp Special Fried Rice and their chow main. When we entered we were informed to seat ourselves and since we had 7 people in our party we got a table to accommodate ourselves. The server was very sweet and was patient with our large party. My parents and I arrived before my two sisters and two nieces so we secured secured our table. We ordered drinks - water for me, the parents had soft drinks. Finally 10 minutes later my siblings and nieces arrived. The server took our orders and recommend to order one more item of food since the portions are very small - which I instantly noticed. Small portions but same high price. When we arrived it was fairly empty but was starting to get packed as hungry church goers were arriving. The food came out at a decent pace and once it did I could not help but to start serving or help serving the family as we were all hungry. The food was delicious. The Orange Chicken was tart and crunchy, egg fo yun was delicious and the rest of the items was good. The staff was very attentive and checked on my family periodically. My nieces for being 4 and 1.5 years old actually did very well and even made the servers laugh. If you are in the area I highly recommend to come stop by...when you enter this place will psych you out! It did my whole family as we thought the building was bigger than it actually was. I've been enjoying Hong Kong for decades. Tonight I went with pork fried rice and beef Chop Suey. Now as of late I've noticed there was less pork in my fried rice then in the past, however tonight I was pleasantly surprised how loaded with pork my rice was! The Chop Suey and fried rice had a nice bit of fire to it, yes a spiciness I hadn't detected in the past. With all this Covid mess there's been so many changes in many restaurants. The shrimp batter was raw inside, the pork was cut into rounds, not strips and it tasted "off." The noodles tasted like they had been fried in old oil. I grew up in merced since the 60s, moved to sacramento in the mid 90s, I always go to Hong Kong everything I'm in town. I went yesterday, very disappointed, crab meat and cream cheese puffs were more like "tuna puffs", could not detect any crab or cream cheese, but the truly sad part is when I ate my chow mein, as I was chewing, I felt what I thought was a small piece of bone wich understandably happens at times, but what I removed from my mouth was a "staple". Are you from Merced? If so you have heard about this place and most likely you have tried it. My wife is from here and she literally gets cravings for Hong Kong Chinese food. She even compares all the places near Sacramento to it. I walked in and loved the atmosphere and instantly felt like I was in a good Chinese food restaurant. For me Chinese food is comfort food and Hong Kong has nailed it. We got one of their plates and I thought that it was decent food. I will obviously be back every time we are in Merced. read more
