Yelp does it again! I can't tell you how many times I've been in an unfamiliar area and looked up what I was searching for on Yelp and find the best places. I hadn't eaten since leaving Sacramento in the wee hours of the morning. When refueling, I search for donuts in my direction of travel, then look for the one with the most reviews. Photos help the selection process as well. Rollen Donuts is a super small shop but extraordinarily fresh donuts. While there were none of my favorites (crullers), a couple chocolate bars are a close second. And Wow! Were they good! So fresh, they almost could not be picked up or easily held, my fingers sank right into them. Still warm, and the frosting was generous with a cake-like icing texture. This has been my Number 1 donut shop since moving to town in 1993. The donuts are so flavorful. Maple, Blueberry, fillings...just awesome. The staff is quick and kind. The donut holes are so light and perfect. It's a hole in the wall kind of shop and some days it's packed. That's because it is worth it. If you go, stay away from my maple bars...lol. read more

Used to get them all the time when I lived in Merced back in the 1990s. They were the best I've ever had anywhere. Haven't had them for 20 years and tried them again on a recent trip to Merced. They were still quite good - better than average. That said, the original owners seem to do a better job. Theirs were just off the charts good. Never had such good maple bars or apple fritters. Again, the current owners do a good job, just not quite the same though. Still recommended if you're in town. read more

Best donuts in Merced period. The dough and frosting has the perfect combination and one doesn't over take the other. The danishes are very tasty as well and satisfying.
