Yelp does it again! I can't tell you how many times I've been in an unfamiliar area and looked up what I was searching for on Yelp and find the best places. I hadn't eaten since leaving Sacramento in the wee hours of the morning. When refueling, I search for donuts in my direction of travel, then look for the one with the most reviews. Photos help the selection process as well. Rollen Donuts is a super small shop but extraordinarily fresh donuts. While there were none of my favorites (crullers), a couple chocolate bars are a close second. And Wow! Were they good! So fresh, they almost could not be picked up or easily held, my fingers sank right into them. Still warm, and the frosting was generous with a cake-like icing texture. I have been wanting to try this place out since my son started at UC Merced 3 years ago. We usually stay downtown at the El Capitan though and it's a bit of a walk so have never tried it until today. I am quite literally writing this review at the counter after having just finished my first time. I do not claim to be a donut expert so take this with a grain of salt. The best donut holes and donuts I have ever had in my life. What sets this place apart is pure lightness...the donuts are so airy and not dense. One of the few times that a high review score (4.7 at the time of this writing) is justified. Used to get them all the time when I lived in Merced back in the 1990s. They were the best I've ever had anywhere. Haven't had them for 20 years and tried them again on a recent trip to Merced. They were still quite good - better than average. That said, the original owners seem to do a better job. Theirs were just off the charts good. Never had such good maple bars or apple fritters. Again, the current owners do a good job, just not quite the same though. Still recommended if you're in town. read more

I LOVE this place! The only time I really get to go is at 5am and I'm always excited to come. When they open, you can physically see them making the donuts...yummm! I highly recommend the glazed donut, donut holes, or the blueberry donut. All of which are good but if you're looking for something to melt in your mouth, then it would have to be the glazed donut or the holes. Best donuts in Merced period. The dough and frosting has the perfect combination and one doesn't over take the other. The danishes are very tasty as well and satisfying. First time I had Rollen Donuts was in 97 when the original owners owned it. The two guys had me hooked on their warm soft chocolate bars. They have since past on and the new owner are making them proud by caring on a delicious recipe. Absolutely love this place!! I would not prefer any other place to get fresh, very tasty treats :) Actually, I would probably prefer to NOT have donuts at all if they weren't from here. Yum Yums down the street doesn't even come close to what these people can do! It's really fun bringing the kids here, because they can watch them roll the dough, shape/form it, and drop them in the fryer!!
