This is a really late review, so I'm sure what I have to say echoes so many people's opinions. It was a bit of a trek getting to Roister due to all the construction happening on their street back then. But the food, the vibe, and the top notch service was all worth it. The food was sublime. The dishes were made of ingredients that one would never think could complement each other, but their magical kitchen performs feats of culinary alchemy. Pasta with clams and mint? A chocolate bar made with duck fat? And those oysters that haunt my dreams to this day...I'll never be the same after that meal. When my hubby expressed how big a fan he was of Grant Achatz, the head chef invited him into the kitchen to observe their operations. So he stood there as they prepared dinner for all the diners. That experience is something that he talks about to this day. All in all, we had a wonderful time at Roister, and we will definitely come back to Chicago and plan our vacation around this restaurant. Their food and kindness left lasting memories for our family.

Wow all these great reviews, we were not that impressed. Started with the ricotta mushroom toast with chestnut, blue oyster. There was so much ricotta you could not taste anything else. There was SO much ricotta, not enjoyable. I had the Cesar salad with added crispy chicken wing. The salad had so much dressing it was utterly gross. The wing had no flavor. The smoked salmon Benedict on croissant was tasty. Our server was very nice and efficient.

We were visiting from Atlanta and still can't stop talking about how delicious this food was! It was a little confusing finding the entrance but so worth it! I am a person that likes sauces so I asked for a side of ranch and they did not have any but the chef said he would make it from scratch. That was some of the best ranch I've had Food-We ordered Roasted tomato soup, French dip À La St. Clair Supper Club, fried chicken sandwich and for dessert the cheesecake and cookies and milk. Atmosphere - We sat at the chef's counter and it was so cool to see the food being prepared and how encouraging the chef was to everyone in the kitchen. We went in for lunch so it was pretty empty in the restaurant. Service - The service was great and we felt welcomed.

Roister, part of the Alinea group and located in the heart of Fulton Market, features incredible roasted meats, including a roast duck dish (a unique take on Peking duck) that is absolutely spectacular. Honestly, their duck is much better tasting and cooked than a lot of the typical Peking duck places you find elsewhere in the city, such as down south in Chinatown or up north in Argyle. Plus, they refill pancakes to your heart's desire - which usually doesn't happen at other establishments! I just read that Roister's final service is coming at the end of this week, so make sure to visit one last time before the new concept is announced!

My boyfriend and I went here for brunch and I loved it! We started with the cheddar rilettes, which was easily the highlight of the meal. I would go back solely for these. They were buttery, the rolls were soft and perfectly salted. We also got some espresso martinis which were fantastic. I ordered the mushroom toast. I loved the cheese on top, and I am a huge mushroom fan so I really enjoyed it. The toast was a little hard to cut and chew however. We also got the sliced potatoes as a side and they were so crispy! The staff were super nice and we sat at the counter so we got to watch them make the food which was cool. I would absolutely come back for their brunch especially!

Made reservations to meet up with a friend for dinner at Roister. We arrived on time at this Fulton Market spot. Host grabbed our coats to check and we were led to our table quickly. As others have described, it is very loud. An open kitchen and fun music, expect a festive evening. We sat down and wished we had a bigger group to order more food. Table next to us had a large group and had 1 of everything it seemed. We ordered way too much food for 2. Daily Selection of Meats & Cheeses-Sunny Ridge, Linedeline, Haus Select Cheddar, Soppressata Picante, Coppa Picante, Salami di manzo Cheese vendors were all from Wisconsin. Roister Chicken-fried thigh, roasted breast, chamomile, gravy & hot sauce Blackened Asparagus-hard boiled egg, mint, beef mignonette Robuchon style Mash Potatoes Sea Bass The standout was the Roister Chicken and the sauces. Chicken was moist and the breading was flavorful and crunchy. I kept going back and forth as to whether I liked the gravy or hot sauce more. I was happy to take back to my hotel and continue nibbling after hours. I'm hindsight, I should not have ordered that meat & cheese plate; that was a meal alone. Overall, I enjoyed all my dishes and would go back to try more.

Wine menu is extremely fairly priced.

Roister comes with high expectations being a part of the Alinea group and formerly being a one-star restaurant. Overall, Roister is a great experience. Food and service are above the quality of many other restaurants. However, in my opinion, some items are too highly priced (especially the brioche bread), and you can receive better service at some other restaurants. That's kind of my takeaway from here - everything is great, but nothing particularly stands out, especially if you come expecting one-star quality. The exception is the pricing of the wine menu, which has a diverse and impressive selection without upcharging as much as its competitors. My only other complaint is that the volume of music is too high. My table struggled to ever hear our waitress, despite her repeating herself for us. If you have been eyeing Roister, I still recommend you give it a try. 4.5/5.

Short Rib Gnoudi

We came here on a fluke after a night out at a nearby restaurant overall we really enjoy the food. I thought it was pricey for some of the entrees. However they did have a 9 course tasting menu for a $110 per person. I believe that also included a cocktail. On this occasion we tried the short rib gnudi and fry bread with cheese sauce. What I like about the restaurant is that you can see the thoughtfulness put into making the food and the menu. I appreciate it that if you sign up the bar you could literally see them prepare aver dish and would fire the chicken right in front of your eyes. I definitely would come back when I was looking to eat a meal. Unfortunately on this occasion we really were just looking to snack.

Aged Cheddar Rillettes

We came here for lunch. I was excited to try this place as it's a sister restaurant of Alinea. I expected great quality after reading through the reviews. I loved the aged cheddar rillettes, I wished there was more. The chicken however was in small portion and salty and dry. No one likes salty, dry chicken so I'm not sure why they served it. Service was good. Rating is like 2.5

Finally experienced Roister and it truly exceeded all of my (high) expectations. We had a 6:30pm reservation on Sunday evening for our first anniversary, and celebrating at Roister was the cherry on top of a perfect day! The place was already fairly busy when we arrived, but we were seated right away. I love the layout of the restaurant. The kitchen is definitely the centerpiece, with 10+ chefs working side by side around a large island. Seeing the chefs create these beautiful dishes was such a treat. The passion and love while cooking was very evident and fun to watch. There is a long bar facing the kitchen, which I believe is for the tasting menu. Everything came out so quick despite how busy the restaurant was. To drink, I ordered the viva la vida which was a tequila, mezcal, red bell pepper, charred pineapple, lime, and habanero. And yes, it was as good as it sounds. Has a strong kick though, so be warned if you're not a fan of spice! My husband ordered a bourbon based drink that he really loved. You can tell a lot of thought goes into the cocktails, and we thoroughly enjoyed them! We started with the brioche and shishito peppers. The brioche is served with a bouquet of herbs that you dip in oil to spread around the bread. Kind of fun, very delicious. The shishito peppers were blistered to perfection and so flipping good. I couldn't stop eating them. My husband also got the tomato soup which was quite the presentation with a huge puff pastry sitting on top of the bowl. He loved it. I was so torn on what to get for my main because everything looked and sounded so good. I ended up going with the salmon and I have no regrets! My husband got the famous fried chicken, so I was still able to give that a try and MAN was it good. We ordered a side of the potato wedges and could have literally fed a large family with the amount they gave us. They also happened to be the best potato wedges I've ever had in my life. Trying to find an excuse to go back to Roister asap! We truly loved it.

Chicken and Waffles

This is my 3?4th? Time back and Roister never disappoints. Their chicken is so crispy, cooked to perfection. My best friend comes to Chicago just for Roister's chicken and waffles, not for me. Service is always so pleasant and ambiance is relaxed but not loud. Perfect brunch spot!

Duck

The food and cocktails were delicious! Each dish was much more filling than I expected, so I'd recommend 1 main and 1 side per person. The experience was definitely on the expensive side, but it's worth it to try a couple of the dishes. Atmosphere was nice and our waiter was friendly! I've heard brunch is highly recommend here!

Swung by for brunch recently as me and a very good friend decided this would be our destination before she took off for LA for the summer. We got a 10:45 reservation on Tock as she had to get here on the early side of brunch. Got a patio seat as it was a very nice summer morning, but I did get to take a look on the inside and it was pretty nice. Menu was full of delicious looking items but I went ahead with the Fried Chicken & Waffles which included honey butter and whiskey maple syrup. The chicken thigh was good but may have been a little over seasoned as it tasted very salty. Washed it all down with water as well as the Cactus Flower Cocktail which includes one of my favorite spirits, mezcal. The cocktail included blanco tequila, hibiscus infused mezcal, xila mezcal liqueur, limes, grapefruit cordial and pamplemoisse la croix...very refreshing! Our server David was a pretty good dude and very professional and accommodating. They include a 20% service charge automatically and stamp it on the receipt in red so you aren't caught off guard. I noticed most reviews are about the dinner so I'm gonna have to come back and check it out. Good joint!

Ask the Community - Roister

How's the parking situation around Saturday brunch time?

Will be busy. Your best chance to get a street spot will be one block north of W Fulton Market on W Wayman Street. If you're coming down W Fulton Market take a right on N Sangamon Street and your first immediate right on W Wayman Street.

Is it byob?

No. They have a full fantastic bar

How long does dinner take? Looking to make a reservation at The Office after dinner at Roister. Thanks in advance

Our dinner took around two hours. You could probably let them know you were in a rush and get away with an hour and a half. It depends on how busy the restaurant is and how much you order. If you just get a few dishes, you could likely do it in an…

For lunch what do most prefer - the chicken sandwich or Wagyu burger?

We have a reservation for 9pm, just looked here and it says they close at 9pm. Should I be worried?

No. Assuming you paid for your reservation. You should be all set. Enjoy!

Would you recommend trying to do a Walk-In?

No! Maybe for brunch but definitely not for dinner.

They serve a special duck dinner but no info on it . Anyone have it?

It's similar to what they consider the Chicken Dinner. It's just the duck entree and it's served with rice and duck prepared different ways. It was very delish and serves about 2-3 people with decent appetites.

Casual attire ok?

Even more casual than business casual is fine. We were all wearing jeans. But not as casual as wearing work out clothes ;)

Can Roister accommodate a vegan diet? If so, what are the options?

The only entree I saw that was Vegan was the lasagna. We loved it! Overall, the menu is not extensive, but it does have great salads and non meat appetizers. Try the hush puppies, awesome!

The pictures of the food don't look appetizing at all...what is their signature dish or do they have one?

Cookies and milk is die for. The butter pasta w clams is amazing. The Hushpuppies are fantastic. Even the avocado toast w chicken liver. Everything we had was amazing.

I want to preface my review with the positives, Londyn was our server & was truly so kind, thorough, and friendly. The restaurant itself is clean & all tables have clear views of the TVs on game days. Now for the room for improvement- the food was very underwhelming. Being from the Chicago area previously, I regularly advocate for the Chicago food scene, and this unfortunately did not meet those standards. We ordered the Brussels sprouts, buffalo cauliflower, wings, and sesame ginger salad: -Brussel sprouts: tasted like they weren't seasoned just air fried and drenched in balsamic dressing -Buffalo cauliflower: soggy, unseasoned, runny buffalo sauce -Wings: PERFECTLY CRISPY, but no flavor (we ordered lemon pepper & buffalo) -Sesame ginger salad: sloppy mix of vegetables tossed in an overly sweet sauce with no sesame or ginger flavor in sight If you're not going to eat, this is probably a great spot, but from a food standpoint, there is room for improvement.

Everyone enjoyed their drinks and they had a fun menu by the chef and we ordered off of both menus. Drinks were reasonably priced. Bartenders were great and explained what was going on. Also wish I had taken picture of all the drinks.

October 1, 2026 TL;DR: Arbella was this close to a five-star…read moredate-night experience. The atmosphere was fantastic, our server struck the perfect balance between attentive and giving us space, and both cocktails I tried were creative and delicious. The truffle fries were pretty mediocre, but even that wouldn't have stopped me from giving Arbella five stars. What did? Discovering afterward that a 5% "service charge" had been added to the bill. I really dislike this growing practice of restaurants and bars adding percentage-based fees rather than simply pricing their menu accordingly, and it was enough to cost an otherwise excellent experience two stars. Ambiance: 5/5 Arbella absolutely nails the atmosphere. I came here on a date, and it was a great choice for that. The music was good, the lighting and decor created a really intimate vibe, and our booth was comfortable enough that we could settle in and actually enjoy the evening. There was energy in the room without it being so loud or overwhelming that we couldn't have a conversation. Even the menu design and presentation fit the experience. If you're looking for somewhere that feels elevated, interesting, and still comfortable for a date, Arbella definitely checks those boxes. Service: 5/5 Our server was fantastic. This was one of those rare occasions where someone found exactly the right balance between being attentive and not constantly interrupting our date. We never felt forgotten about, but we also had plenty of space to enjoy ourselves and talk. I especially appreciated the recommendations. Whenever we had a question or wanted guidance on what to order, our server was knowledgeable and genuinely helpful rather than simply pushing something on the menu. Excellent service from beginning to end. Drinks & Food: 4/5 The cocktails were easily the highlight. I tried the First You Take The Graham and the Trankilo Melon, and both were really good while also being different enough from what I would normally order to make the experience more memorable. This is exactly what I want from a cocktail bar: drinks that make me curious enough to try something new and then actually deliver. The truffle fries, however, were mid at best. They weren't terrible, but compared with how impressive everything else felt, they were forgettable. I'd absolutely come back for the cocktails, but I'd choose something different to eat next time. About That 5% Service Charge... This is unfortunately where Arbella lost me, and ultimately why I cannot give the experience five stars. I didn't notice until reviewing my bill afterward that a 5% service charge had been added. I strongly dislike this increasingly common practice of restaurants and bars adding percentage-based fees to the bill. If operating costs have increased, I would much rather an establishment incorporate those costs transparently into its menu prices so I know what I'm agreeing to pay when I order. Calling it a "service charge" also creates unnecessary confusion, particularly when customers are still expected to decide what to tip their server. At a cocktail-focused establishment, where you may be ordering multiple drinks throughout an evening rather than paying attention to every line of the check, I think fees like this need to be extremely clear and prominent before ordering, not something a customer discovers afterward. For me, it feels like an extra charge for simply using the establishment in exactly the way it was intended to be used. Overall: 4/5 The frustrating part is that without the service charge, this probably would have been a five-star review. Arbella gave us a genuinely great date night: beautiful atmosphere, excellent service, creative cocktails, and a space I otherwise would have happily recommended and returned to. Instead, that 5% fee left a sour final impression on what had been an excellent evening. It may seem small, but transparency around pricing matters to me. Arbella did so much right that I want to come back, but the service charge is significant enough that I would think twice before doing so.

They offer some food, but if you want something more substantial, Avec downstairs is your best best. Our server was fun and guessed what drinks we would like most based on our vibes. I was happy when he said mine because I was already between two drinks and he picked one of those! I loved the Side to Side cocktail. My bestie wanted more from her Golden Oldie. It's a pretty spot.
