I have been going to Dr Ota for six years without a problem. In the summer of 2023 I cracked one of my molars and it was very painful. I called Dr Ota's office and was told they could see me in two weeks. They don't provide any urgent care service. I was very upset that he wouldn't see me sooner for this painful cracked tooth. I arranged an appointment with another dentist the next day. He referred me to an oral surgeon who extracted the tooth and began the process for a tooth implant (about $6,000). A few months later I went to Dr Ota's office for a cleaning. The standard charge is $141. They are not part of the Delta Dental Insurance network but they said they would send the bill in for me and I could pay the difference. However, they added for the first time a $103 charge for the standard 1 minute exam when Dr Ota comes in, looks in your mouth, and says everything seems okay. That charge gives him an extra $29 from Delta Dental and increases my total out-of-pocket payments by 35%. The American Dental Association specifically warns against dentists charging for something they have never charged for previously but always included with the cleaning. When I brought this up, Dr Ota said he did not want me as a patient anymore. Have you every imagined that your long-term dentist would refuse to see you when you have an emergency such as a cracked tooth? How would your feel about a dentist who adds on charges without even telling you in order to make an extra $29 from the insurance company and an extra $15 from the patient? I can say that I was very disappointed in his choices. I would not recommend Dr. Ota for these reasons. read more

I can't help it--I have to jump on the Dr. Ota train! I found him on Yelp and couldn't be happier. I actually LEARNED things in my cleaning today! Dr. Ota was patient and kind, and actually took the time to sit down with me, look at my X-Rays, explain to me what the pieces of the picture were, and how I could take better care of my teeth. Not only was he thorough, careful, and explained everything he was doing, but he really cared about me as a person and as a patient. He's very personable and has some great stories. He saw me on a day's notice when one of my teeth became sensitive to heat (a warning sign of nerve damage). He did a thorough diagnosis and explained every part of it to me, even going over the x-ray and what he was looking for. He's now been my dentist for about seven years. In the past, I've had questions about caps that he couldn't field, nor say "well, the Journal of X says this." In other words, he doesn't live for the latest research on that topic. I like my doctors to be nerds, I like it when they live and breathe the thing they do so that I can ask them questions and make informed decisions. So while he isn't able to dispense all the advice I'd like, the caps he put in have given me no trouble. He does quick, professional work, and when I had a dental emergency, he fit me in quickly. His staff have also always been courteous and professional. Helpful hint - there's a hidden garage tucked under the side of his building that has two spaces for patients. read more

My mother has worked as Dr.Ota's dental assistant for the past 20 years! I can honestly say that Dr.Ota has never treated me as anything less than family. I love this office. Yes, it may seem cozy, but they truly do take full care of you and they just fully remodeled the office - so now it's finally got that modern feel. Everyone there is completed commited to doing their job to the fullest and with a smile on their face. Even if you're an adult, you can still get a sticker/toy :) My fiance of 12 years is now a new client of Dr.Ota. He just went in last week. Afterwards he stated he had never received such service and that the care of attention-detail-left his teeth feeling cleaner than ever before. Dr. Roger Ota has been my dentist for the last 20 years or so. I travel a bit out of my way (all the way down from the vicinity of El Sobrante) to see him in the heart of Berkeley. It's worth it. I'm a physician, with training in Anesthesia, so I'm in a particular position to provide both a patient's and a professional's assessment of Dr. Ota. He's outstanding. His anesthetic technique is a work of art. Usually there's not even the slightest bite when he introduces his locals. He's clear and straightforward in his communications. Dr. Ota is by far the best dentist I've ever been to. My wife and I have been seeing Dr. Ota for over 6 years and he has been fantastic. Extremely personable, expert in his field, patient and caring. When I went in to have a crown today, he talked me through the entire procedure, putting my piece of mind and comfort at the forefront. A week ago when I went in for the x-rays that uncovered the problem that led to the crown, he spent half and hour with me clearly explaining what was going on and my treatment options. YIKES! Here I go! An apt. at the dentist.......but I am noticing I am actually NOT SCARED. That is WEIRD for me since I have hated going to the dentist for a bilion trillion years. I have some serious issues with getting work done on my teeth, but Dr. Ota is fabulous. He is smart, kind, funny but best of all he is GENTLE. He is the most caring dentist I have ever had. He isn't even on my plan at work, so I have to pay extra but it is a choice I make knowing that I am going to get 100% quality care. I have been seeing Dr. Ota and staff for over twenty years. As with many Yelp reviewers I can not write too much about him and his practice. While he is an excellent Doctor his technicians are just as good. Dentistry is not ever pain free but can be made as free of pain as possible. Dr. Ota is expert at this. It has been hard to find a negative about Dr. Ota but it may be he explains his techniques and movements more than I need. I place emphysis on too much information while others may not. I have seen him for so many years that I know what he will do next during many visits. Dr. Honda is equally light handed. These two doctors cover for each other when on vacation. Dr Honda has given me an exam several times when Dr. Ota was taking time off. I can not write too much about his technicians and office staff. Most days I am in and out quickly with a printed business card informing me of my next appointment. The simple truth is once you visit this dental office you will also leave with. I have been at this Dentist office since before Dr. Ota started and it was Dr. Sakamoto. Dr Ota is a great dentist, a very nice guy and his team is top notch. No complaints. I started going to this office in the early 1980s and was probably one of Dr. Ota's first patients. Now my wife and 2 boys go. Parking could be better, so that is a little complaint but BART is close. I have walked from Downtown Berkeley station many, many times. You can also park in his carport area which you will know when you get there. I have never had to park in the parking lot. There is a fine park (the landscaped kind) next to the office, the Cheeseboard is nearby too! read more
