A terrific BBQ joint in the heart of Charleston that offers drive-thru service as well as indoor and outdoor dining. Small parking spaces so you would have to rely on street parking on busier days however I was lucky to park behind the restaurant on a Wednesday evening. Service was excellent! Let's talk about the food! I ordered a 3 meat combo: Brisket, Pork Ribs, and Pulled Pork. My favorite was the brisket however I wish it was sliced not chopped nevertheless it was tasty. The Pork ribs were delicious as well but I wish it was more tender. Pulled pork was nicely seasoned but not my personal preference of meats however it was my first time so I had to get a little taste of everything. I will definitely be back to try their brisket sandwich! The sides: Collard Greens, Mac & Cheese, and Cornbread that all come with the combo. We arrived around 1;30 on a Monday and I was surprised it wasn't packed. We were able to,order right away. My wife ordered a chopped pork sandwich, our son ordered brisket and spare rib combo, and I ordered the chopped pork plate. My sides were Mac and cheese with beans, my wife had potato salad, our son had fries and Mac and cheese. Food was delivered in about 3-4 minutes. The first thing I noticed with the pork was the vinegar pepper taste. I know they mop the whole hog that way nit had more spice than I was expecting. It was good but it's just different from the pulled pork I'm used to in Kentucky. Mac and cheese was delicious. Lots of cheese and creamy. Beans were fabulous. Some spice which I enjoyed. Cornbread had a touch of sweetness but not overly sweet. My wife liked her sandwich but it was a little spicy for her taste. The potato salad was very mustard based and was delicious. We all enjoyed the fries our son ordered. The brisket was very good with a strong pepper flavor. Spare ribs, not my cup of tea. I prefer baby back but these didn't have the clean bite I enjoy. Again, nothing wrong with them a great taste but just different than what I'm used to and my preference. All in all, very good and I can see why it is so highly rated and recommended. Ribs and sides were good. Wife wasn't impressed with the baked potato. My major beef was that the pulled pork had been refrigerated and then reheated (and cooled off again). This was some classic South Carolina bbq. We were planning on going to a different bbq place with our visit to Charleston, but our uber driver insisted this was the place to go! It was very good. Perfect for a lunch spot. That was evident by the amount of locals in there just grabbing a quick sandwich on their lunch breaks. Had I gone on a warmer day, I definitely would have eaten outside because the outdoor seated looked so fun. I feel like the highlights for me were trying the 4 sauces and the Mac n cheese. I love this bbq spot! However I felt the need to update my review to reflect a more recent experience since I haven't been here in a while. I waited over 40 mins for my order even though the restaurant wasn't busy. There were several empty tables inside and out. I understand that I placed a future order, however, the young woman who I spoke to at the counter had no customer service skills. When she couldn't find my order, she said "your order isn't ready & it'll probably be a minute since you placed the order for 3:30" As someone who works in customer service & given the nature an status of the restaurant, she should have asked someone if my order could be made sooner. After waiting 40 mins I went to the drive through where I was told my order "just showed up" & it would be out in a minute. I did not anticipate being let off work early, but next time I will not call ahead an order. The food was good as usual, however being forced to wait w/o even seeing if the order could be prepared sooner & the portion size of the brisket chili not even being a quarter of the container full, I will be trying another bbq spot next time. read more

I love BBQ and do a lot of my own smoking at home however (Honestly), these were some of the best Ribs I've EVER had. I got the Brisket and rib combo. Portions were huge! My wife got the chicken tenders and hush puppies which were also very good! Collard greens WERE THE BEST I've ever had, hands down. Great variety of sauces. Delicious and good value bbq! I'm not a huge bbq fan, or meat fan in general, so while I wouldn't say that I'm a southern bbq connoisseur, Rodney Scott's was great! We came at around 8:15 on a Saturday - it was busy, but we were able to find a table indoors and didn't have to wait to order. 3 of us shared the pit master combo of 4 meats and 4 sides for ~$42 before tax and tip. It was a ton of food, and we came home with enough leftovers for another meal for one. The brisket was our favorite meat by far, and the collared greens were our favorite side. We also shared an apple hand pie which was good but nothing that special, and the banana pudding which was huge and delicious. I enjoyed dropping in for a quick lunch! You order at the counter have the food is brought out to you. The service was helpful. The a/c was pumping inside, which was great for a hot day. There is indoor and outdoor seating. I got the half chicken, which was pretty tasty. I wasn't able to eat the greens because they have pork, but I tried the mac and cheese and hush puppies. The mac and cheese was pretty good, not extra creamy, but still a good flavor. I did not care for the hush puppies too much. I didn't get all of the bells and whistles, as someone who does not eat pork or red meat, but I enjoyed what I had. read more

We decided to go in person and I'm so glad we did. We had a great experience. We were glad to see that they have wine and beer so we ordered drinks and dinner. At Rodney Scott's, you will order at the register and they will then deliver. They quickly delivered everything and we had a feast! I was recommended this James Beard Award Winning BBQ spot and it did not disappoint. I had their BBQ Pulled Pork Platter with Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens, Cornbread and a Sweet Tea. Everything was delicious. The service was ok. There were a bunch of teens working so some were better to interact with than others. They have indoor and outdoor seating which was great as the weather wasn't too hot outside. The indoor wasn't bad but the AC was on high enough for me to choose outdoor dining. Located in a residential neighborhood of Charleston South Carolina, this original location of whole hog BBQ served up various meats and accompaniments in a casual setting. It's really refreshing to go to a place that has won many accolades and awards with its owner being 'famous' (over various media), but still have a dining experience where you are not questioning if the price and effort was worth the meal. In the case of Rodney Scott's, it absolutely was/is, Well known across the US for his whole hog BBQ, the owner/pitmaster of this barbeque joint, won the James Beard award for best chef in the Southeast region in 2018. When a BBQ joint wins a James Beard, it is usually their Classic award, recognizing their longevity and contributions to the community. But in this particular case, it was for best chef (person) for a particular year in a particular region. Only two pitmasters have done that (Aaron Franklin being the other). It has five locations across the south (including the OG here in Charleston). Pitmaster Scott has an interesting history, and he has shared his story on various TV shows. I learned it on a full episode of Chef's Table: BBQ on Netflix. This place was an interesting mix of the classic (large portions at reasonable prices with good sides) with modern (drive-thru, fast food ordering set-up, no chance that any of the original crew was working...in fact the employees working that day reminded me of young folks working at a Shake Shack). We arrived after a 2 hour drive around lunch time, and the place was half full with no line. The dedicated parking lot is way too small, but because it is located in a residential neighborhood, free street parking was found. You order via a queue in front of a register, and the food is brought out to you. It's a fast food set-up, with plastic permanent tables inside (probably seating for like 40 people) and some tables set-up outside for outdoor dining. The line did grow by the time we left, but still had places to sit for those who wanted to eat-in. My wife and I shared a 3 meat combo plate ($29), choosing both types of pork (Carolina and Southern) and ribs, along with mac & cheese, crinkle cut fries, and cornbread. I meant it to get a full portion of both pulled pork and one portion of ribs, but I think they split the one portion of pulled pork into two, and gave a double of the ribs (4 full spare ribs..sadly couldn't finish 2 of them...too much food that you can't take on a plane). The pulled pork was definitely higher end, with pieces of crackling skin mixed. There were 4 different varieties of BBQ sauce, all vinegar based (thin), to add the right level of flavor to each bite. The pork was very moist, reminded me a lot of the meat you get from a Filipino feast with a whole suckling pig. The ribs were good, providing both the rib tips along with the St-Louis-style portion. And the sides were very solid, with the mac n cheese portion having the melted cheese topping prepared individually, and the cornbread being slightly sweet and not too dense (would have gone great with some honey butter, if only we had some). Getting good BBQ on the West Coast is an expensive proposition, expounding on the note that the best quality meats are used with a lot of time consuming labor. Not here in the South....yes, definitely time consuming labor (all good BBQ is), but a full hog produces so much meat, that the consumer gets the cost benefit. And I love the fact that the expansion of his brand didn't happen to create more outlets for pork produced in one spot. Instead each of his five locations has to stand alone in producing this level of barbeque. It's a great recipe, and we'll definitely make it a point to visit the others, if in the area. read more

Rodney Scott's is a well known landmark, and we were hankering for some good barbecue, so stopped in. They do a lot of take away businesses and indoor seating is limited. But, they are also very quick with bringing out your food, so it does keep things moving. The food itself is A+, I've been in several times and it never disappoints. You place your order at the counter and they bring it out to you. They have excellent beer choices on tap as well. It is a bit noisy, so little chance of having a quiet conversation inside. read more
