Tried the sides and the Mac and cheese was very good (very greasy) but good!! The potato salad was ** I crave the potato salad on a daily. The corn bread was so moist and full of flavor. The banana pudding was delicious!! We got two huge containers and it was gone in a day
It was so busy that indoor seating was completely full, but the wait for my food was reasonable once I ordered so they were very efficient. The staff also showed positive, friendly attitudes. The food was perfect-- tender pulled pork, flavorful greens, and soulful mac and cheese. I also tried the pork rinds which were not too salty like most pork rinds. My only regret is not ordering extra cornbread because it was perfectly fluffy and buttered.
A must bbq while in Charleston. Banana pudding, I need not say more. Get it. Also the pulled pork was seasoned sooooo well and so flavorful. Fries on point. Tiny bit off the beaten path. Great seating options indoor/outdoor. Friendly workers, delicious bbq. Rodney Scott is the man!

It's great every time we go. We visit family every year and always make it a point to come to Rodney's. The food is great and service is great. Their style of BBQ is the best.
Delicious and good value bbq! I'm not a huge bbq fan, or meat fan in general, so while I wouldn't say that I'm a southern bbq connoisseur, Rodney Scott's was great! We came at around 8:15 on a Saturday - it was busy, but we were able to find a table indoors and didn't have to wait to order. 3 of us shared the pit master combo of 4 meats and 4 sides for ~$42 before tax and tip. It was a ton of food, and we came home with enough leftovers for another meal for one. The brisket was our favorite meat by far, and the collared greens were our favorite side. We also shared an apple hand pie which was good but nothing that special, and the banana pudding which was huge and delicious. I would come back to Rodney Scott's if I'm back in Charleston and looking for some southern bbq!
This was some classic South Carolina bbq. We were planning on going to a different bbq place with our visit to Charleston, but our uber driver insisted this was the place to go! It was very good. Perfect for a lunch spot. That was evident by the amount of locals in there just grabbing a quick sandwich on their lunch breaks. Had I gone on a warmer day, I definitely would have eaten outside because the outdoor seated looked so fun. I feel like the highlights for me were trying the 4 sauces and the Mac n cheese. The Kathy sauce was my favorite. This is definitely a place to try if you are looking for classic bbq in SC.

There is indoor and outdoor seating. I got the half chicken, which was pretty tasty. I wasn't able to eat the greens because they have pork, but I tried the mac and cheese and hush puppies. The mac and cheese was pretty good, not extra creamy, but still a good flavor. I did not care for the hush puppies too much. I didn't get all of the bells and whistles, as someone who does not eat pork or red meat, but I enjoyed what I had.

Prices are reasonable, service is fast, and it's a perfect spot for a quick, easy, satisfying meal. Definitely a good go-to if you want something tasty and uncomplicated in Charleston.
Always delicious and fantastic service. We are fans since the Hemingway days and third-generation Scott's fans. The pork is great but honestly we love the brisket, turkey and steak sandwich just as much. Try the onion rings and the Bama 16 sauce. They're renovating the patio and outdoor seating area, FYI.
I got a 2 meat combo plate- brisket, pulled pork, mac & cheese, and beans. The portions were huge. I was so full. I'm not used to vinegar based bbq sauce. There were 4 options but they mostly tasted the same. The pulled pork was weird. The brisket was very good. Mac and cheese was good and very cheesy but could've been more creamy. I like spicy food but the beans were too spicy they weren't too enjoyable.
I was recommended this James Beard Award Winning BBQ spot and it did not disappoint. I had their BBQ Pulled Pork Platter with Mac & Cheese, Collard Greens, Cornbread and a Sweet Tea. Everything was delicious. The service was ok. There were a bunch of teens working so some were better to interact with than others. They have indoor and outdoor seating which was great as the weather wasn't too hot outside. The indoor wasn't bad but the AC was on high enough for me to choose outdoor dining. Overall delicious food. The parking is limited and questionable but it's definitely worth checking out.

For good soul food sides, go to Hannibal's on the other side of town. But whatever about the sides. We're here for the BBQ. Pulled pork was yuck-o. Dryer than the conditions that lead to a California wildfire. A slice of white bread comes with the meal to "sop up all the juices," fool please. There were less juices than a post-meno... nevermind. Mr Scott crossed my path today, causing me to remember his over hyped restaurant. My dude teamed up with Target and now slings this sauce with this whack labeling. Rodney never had it.

OMG!! This is the BBQ I've been dreaming of since moving to the South from the North, where BBQ is virtually non-existent... My husband and I shared a plate of brisket, ribs, beans, cornbread and mac & cheese. The meat just melts in your mouth! You don't even need teeth to eat it, that's how tender it is! And those beans!! They were BEST baked beans I've ever had in my life. I could have eaten a bucket of them. I already can't wait to come back here again! :) read more
A terrific BBQ joint in the heart of Charleston that offers drive-thru service as well as indoor and outdoor dining. Small parking spaces so you would have to rely on street parking on busier days however I was lucky to park behind the restaurant on a Wednesday evening. Service was excellent! Let's talk about the food! I ordered a 3 meat combo: Brisket, Pork Ribs, and Pulled Pork. My favorite was the brisket however I wish it was sliced not chopped nevertheless it was tasty. The Pork ribs were delicious as well but I wish it was more tender. Pulled pork was nicely seasoned but not my personal preference of meats however it was my first time so I had to get a little taste of everything. I will definitely be back to try their brisket sandwich! The sides: Collard Greens, Mac & Cheese, and Cornbread that all come with the combo. I enjoyed these sides as they hit what southern sides are all about. No problem there! read more
We arrived around 1;30 on a Monday and I was surprised it wasn't packed. We were able to,order right away. My wife ordered a chopped pork sandwich, our son ordered brisket and spare rib combo, and I ordered the chopped pork plate. My sides were Mac and cheese with beans, my wife had potato salad, our son had fries and Mac and cheese. Food was delivered in about 3-4 minutes. The first thing I noticed with the pork was the vinegar pepper taste. I know they mop the whole hog that way nit had more spice than I was expecting. It was good but it's just different from the pulled pork I'm used to in Kentucky. Mac and cheese was delicious. Lots of cheese and creamy. Beans were fabulous. Some spice which I enjoyed. Cornbread had a touch of sweetness but not overly sweet. My wife liked her sandwich but it was a little spicy for her taste. The potato salad was very mustard based and was delicious. We all enjoyed the fries our son ordered. The brisket was very good with a strong pepper flavor. Spare ribs, not my cup of tea. I prefer baby back but these didn't have the clean bite I enjoy. Again, nothing wrong with them a great taste but just different than what I'm used to and my preference. All in all, very good and I can see why it is so highly rated and recommended. Again, regional differences in barbecue are distinct and it is what you're used to and what you prefer. It was delicious. I would eat there again. I enjoyed the spice with the pork. We came to Charleston to specifically come here. We ordered the three meat combo with Carolina style pork, ribs, brisket, cornbread, fries and mac and cheese. We also got collard greens and hush puppies. The cashier and the servers were great and really friendly but I was disappointed in the food. I liked the cornbread and the butter was divine but everything else was disappointing. read more
Located in a residential neighborhood of Charleston South Carolina, this original location of whole hog BBQ served up various meats and accompaniments in a casual setting. It's really refreshing to go to a place that has won many accolades and awards with its owner being 'famous' (over various media), but still have a dining experience where you are not questioning if the price and effort was worth the meal. In the case of Rodney Scott's, it absolutely was/is, Well known across the US for his whole hog BBQ, the owner/pitmaster of this barbeque joint, won the James Beard award for best chef in the Southeast region in 2018. When a BBQ joint wins a James Beard, it is usually their Classic award, recognizing their longevity and contributions to the community. But in this particular case, it was for best chef (person) for a particular year in a particular region. Only two pitmasters have done that (Aaron Franklin being the other). It has five locations across the south (including the OG here in Charleston). Pitmaster Scott has an interesting history, and he has shared his story on various TV shows. I learned it on a full episode of Chef's Table: BBQ on Netflix. This place was an interesting mix of the classic (large portions at reasonable prices with good sides) with modern (drive-thru, fast food ordering set-up, no chance that any of the original crew was working...in fact the employees working that day reminded me of young folks working at a Shake Shack). We arrived after a 2 hour drive around lunch time, and the place was half full with no line. The dedicated parking lot is way too small, but because it is located in a residential neighborhood, free street parking was found. You order via a queue in front of a register, and the food is brought out to you. It's a fast food set-up, with plastic permanent tables inside (probably seating for like 40 people) and some tables set-up outside for outdoor dining. The line did grow by the time we left, but still had places to sit for those who wanted to eat-in. My wife and I shared a 3 meat combo plate ($29), choosing both types of pork (Carolina and Southern) and ribs, along with mac & cheese, crinkle cut fries, and cornbread. I meant it to get a full portion of both pulled pork and one portion of ribs, but I think they split the one portion of pulled pork into two, and gave a double of the ribs (4 full spare ribs..sadly couldn't finish 2 of them...too much food that you can't take on a plane). The pulled pork was definitely higher end, with pieces of crackling skin mixed. There were 4 different varieties of BBQ sauce, all vinegar based (thin), to add the right level of flavor to each bite. The pork was very moist, reminded me a lot of the meat you get from a Filipino feast with a whole suckling pig. The ribs were good, providing both the rib tips along with the St-Louis-style portion. And the sides were very solid, with the mac n cheese portion having the melted cheese topping prepared individually, and the cornbread being slightly sweet and not too dense (would have gone great with some honey butter, if only we had some). Getting good BBQ on the West Coast is an expensive proposition, expounding on the note that the best quality meats are used with a lot of time consuming labor. Not here in the South....yes, definitely time consuming labor (all good BBQ is), but a full hog produces so much meat, that the consumer gets the cost benefit. And I love the fact that the expansion of his brand didn't happen to create more outlets for pork produced in one spot. Instead each of his five locations has to stand alone in producing this level of barbeque. It's a great recipe, and we'll definitely make it a point to visit the others, if in the area. read more
I love this bbq spot! However I felt the need to update my review to reflect a more recent experience since I haven't been here in a while. I waited over 40 mins for my order even though the restaurant wasn't busy. There were several empty tables inside and out. I understand that I placed a future order, however, the young woman who I spoke to at the counter had no customer service skills. When she couldn't find my order, she said "your order isn't ready & it'll probably be a minute since you placed the order for 3:30" As someone who works in customer service & given the nature an status of the restaurant, she should have asked someone if my order could be made sooner. After waiting 40 mins I went to the drive through where I was told my order "just showed up" & it would be out in a minute. I did not anticipate being let off work early, but next time I will not call ahead an order. The food was good as usual, however being forced to wait w/o even seeing if the order could be prepared sooner & the portion size of the brisket chili not even being a quarter of the container full, I will be trying another bbq spot next time. read more
The best! Huge portions of the best bbq I've ever had. We had ribs, pulled pork , brisket (to die for), collards, cold slaw, fries, and beans. Everything was amazing. We are from Washington DC but ran into someone I worked with 20 years ago. That kind of place. Hope we make it back this way again! read more

I love BBQ and do a lot of my own smoking at home however (Honestly), these were some of the best Ribs I've EVER had. I got the Brisket and rib combo. Portions were huge! My wife got the chicken tenders and hush puppies which were also very good! Collard greens WERE THE BEST I've ever had, hands down. Great variety of sauces. Nice, clean place with super fast service to our table. Highly encourage you to try this BBQ! read more
Where to begin?! First off the restaurant was packed and there was a pretty long line to order, so that was our first sign the food was great. We were lucky enough to find a table after we ordered our food for dine in. The food came out super quick and the service was very friendly upon delivery. Holy cow, the food was so good! I couldn't stop eating the Mac n cheese and collards.... Yum! We will definitely be back again next time we are in town! read more
Rodney Scott's is a well known landmark, and we were hankering for some good barbecue, so stopped in. They do a lot of take away businesses and indoor seating is limited. But, they are also very quick with bringing out your food, so it does keep things moving. The food itself is A+, I've been in several times and it never disappoints. You place your order at the counter and they bring it out to you. They have excellent beer choices on tap as well. It is a bit noisy, so little chance of having a quiet conversation inside. read more

So I placed an online order for the $1 weekend wing special for the game today. Pick up time 1:40pm. I called in after placing the online order so they can combine my 36 wings in one pan which I was told no problem. I arrived at 1:30pm(I'm always early) just to be told they don't have an order for me in the system . I received a text confirming my order for 1:40 but now it has changed to 2pm. I guess the Manager comes up and points out the 2pm time but states we will get your order ready now. No apologies but I did receive my order on time after their miscommunication and confusion. As a Memphis BBQ girl through and through, I wasn't sure what to expect from a vinegar-based sauce -- but Rodney Scott did not disappoint! The signature Rodney Sauce had the perfect balance of tang and flavor, and it worked beautifully with the smoked wings. I actually brought a couple with me on my flight back... and yes, I ate them mid-air! If you're a fan of smoked meats and bold flavor, Rodney Scott's is definitely worth the stop. read more

The food was pretty good. The ribs were tender and they had that good old baked Mac and cheese. The cornbread was spectacular. The greens had a bit of a vinegar taste. I eat pork and didn't mind but juts let it be known it's pork in the greens. The service was impeccable. No complaints as im leaving stuffed as a tick. read more

Honestly for a James Beard award winner, and a Netflix special, I was a little surprised by the quality of the food here. The "famous" whole hog pulled pork had almost no flavor. The ribs were alright - the ends were extremely tough but I guess some people like those parts. The brisket was not juicy at all but it did have an incredible Smokey flavor. Sides were good. The selection of sauces all tasted very similar to me, all a bit heavy on the spice. The place was practically empty at 7:30 on a weeknight, maybe their popularity has suffered lately? Staff was nice and it is a reasonably clean / well-kept establishment. Prices are not bad. In my experience, Lewis BBQ down the street is far better quality. read more

The carolina pork was really good and the ribs were tasty. Brisket was a little dry and thin sliced, but the baked beans and collared greens were delicious. Service was excellent, friendly and fast. A nice spot with plenty of parking nearby. read more

Let me be completely honest when I say this, I don't think of myself as a bbq connoisseur, however this is the worst bbq I've ever had and I've eaten bbq in the north. So let that sink in. The ribs were tough. I had to RIP them off the bone. The pork was doused in vinegar (I didn't get Carolina style) and tasted like someone left it outside for a couple of hours. The Mac n cheese was greasy. The hush puppies were fine. The corn bread was fine. The chili just tasted like tomatoes. For a place that charges what they charge, you'd think they would at least give us smoked ribs instead of boiled, and trust me I've had better boiled ribs. read more
This was hands down some of the best BBQ I ever had. The pork ribs were honestly the best ribs I ever had and I had a lot of ribs mostly in Texas. The smoke goes through entirely through the entire ribs. Also the pulled pork was the best I ever had. It was amazing but it was really those pork ribs that would keep me coming back here if I could. Service is also nice and friendly here and the servers were very pleasant. They have a lot of sauce available but honestly the food was so good by itself that no sauce was really needed. My cousin and I went here and I met up with a close friend and her child who loved them hush puppies! Again, we ate outside and I usually do not eat all my food, did that day! Those catfish fingers were yummy! The service was quick and I liked the Southern vibe! I dipped fries in that BBQ sauce. And nice meeting the owner!! Will they likely run out of food or certain items by dinner time? I want to try to go a weekday for dinner and was also wondering how long the wait would be. Thanks.
If it isn't busy, the wait is roughly 15-20 min. I've only been for dinner on a weekday maybe 6 times, but there's never been a shortage of food. Enjoy!
Does anyone have tips about ordering takeout for a family of 6 on thanksgiving day, 11/25/2021? Is it recommended that I place an online order days or weeks in advance...?

Do they take reservations for lunch?
I do not believe so. We got there 15 minutes before they opened & there were 30 ppl in front of us. First come first serve I believe.

I haven't tried it all but you can't go wrong with the pulled pork (sandwich or plate). The Mac and cheese and baked beans are really really good. And Rodney's sauce for dipping!
