I stumbled across Bessinger's online and was intrigued by its history with Carolina barbecue, particularly the mustard-based "gold" sauce the Bessinger family has been making since the 1930s. When we pulled up, we had to sit in the car and wait for the rain to let up. There's a large parking lot, and I was honestly surprised to see both a drive-through and a pretty sizable restaurant! Once we made it in out of the rain, we ordered a Little Joe basket with fries and one massive onion ring, along with wings and a side of mac & cheese. I was also pleasantly surprised to see they had beer, so naturally I ordered one while we waited out the storm. The pulled pork sandwich was tender and soft, and we made our way through all the different sauces. None were overly spicy, but they all had great flavor. I ended up settling on the Original Gold, which had more of that tangy, mustard-forward flavor I was hoping to try while in South Carolina. The wings were shockingly good! I genuinely don't think I've had wings quite like them anywhere up north. Even the parts I expected to be gristly or overly crispy were soft, and the meat practically fell off the bone. The mac & cheese was decent with a nice layer of browned, crispy cheese on top. And the massive onion ring? It almost tasted like a savory doughnut! Overall, a solid stop with a cozy interior, friendly and fast service, and easy parking. It ended up being the perfect place to shelter from the storm and a tasty first stop on our South Carolina trip.

The rub was the perfect level of spice, no extra sauce needed, though all 5 on the sauce bar were fantastic. They also have an ayce pickle/pepper bar (watch out, the jalapeños are hot!) The steak fries are some of the best I can remember, the donut mega onion ring was like something from the state fair, and the brisket baked beans were great as well. I inevitably get the question "who has the best BBQ?" to which my response is always any state can have great or poor BBQ these days. That leads me to writing a review of Melvin's BBQ in Mount Pleasant. Located in a fairly easy location to access in Mt Pleasant but depending on the time of day traffic can be horrible, Melvin's has an extremely modest exterior. I'll admin I never went inside, but through the drive-thru. The service was fast and the people were nice. I'll start off with the sides. First up, I've been craving REAL onion rings for some time. I've had it with the prefrozen, fast food garbage and wanted the real deal. Melvin's rings are a step above but I admit, they had way too much breading to onion ratio. A lot of mustard Q sauce made me forget that indiscretion. Another item I've been craving for years is hash. Well again I believe it was an average effort. I didn't detect much meat, rather a lot more filler veggies than an assortment of meats. This affects the flavor as texture tricks the mind; an example is spaghetti & macaroni noodles, same ingredients but hits the mouth different. Back to the point, the hash left me craving - hash. That said the rice was really good and if the meat volume was increased this would have been a "winner winner hash dinner." I got the spare ribs and it was above average as I was expecting less resistance when biting down and pulling away. The smoke was on point but if I'm splitting hairs could have used a wee bit more, but I'm being overly lustful. Part of my disappointment is I literally just had BBQ twice in Texas within the last two months and the ribs; spare and babyback. Sorry, Texas rules in BBQ, in this case technique as SC is the Pig Capital. As for the pulled pork sandwich - pure bliss. The pork was moist and flavorful while having the perfect amount of meat piled high on a soft bun. That and I love the Golden BBQ sauce. This sandwich is worth its weight in gold! In summary, I went to another Melvins growing up. Once a month my dad and I would stop in and get a BBQ sandwich and onion rings on the way to the lake. These memories have stuck with me and while the onion rings are a tad off, the sandwich is exactly what I remember which brought a smile to my face. I have a feeling my nitpicking might have caught them on an off day so I'll be hitting the restaurant again. The sandwich and sauce is good enough for the sins of the masses!

It was a brisk Thursday evening here in Charleston And I had not had dinner yet that evening. And so, I didn't think my friend will really drive me around to find dinner, so I opted to find something here at Gobble Gobble food truck during my short stint here. First impressions were that it is still the food truck. They have a small and a very limited menu. I opted for the Grassfed beef burger, which seem to be a good and logical choice of all the options presented. I did not know what the potato rounds were initially, but I assumed it was more or less french fries. So I got those too. It was cool that they actually came to the brewery since they knew that I was staying there and they got my to go order wrapped up nicely and present it to me there instead of waiting actually at the food truck itself. It was cool because I did not know whether or not they knew I was in the area after the order or went elsewhere. I ended up eating my dinner back at the hotel, because I was really hungry after taking two beers at the Palmetto brewery, and wanted to actually enjoy it back at the hotel while watching television. The meal was rather good and delicious. I really have Grassfed beef anyway so it was a real treat for me. It was cool, I enjoyed it quite nicely. The overall experience here at gobble, gobble food truck here in Charleston, South Carolina was pretty good and friendly. With that in mind, I'd recommend the grass fed burger but I've only had the one. Come during dinner time and you'd be glad you did. Best part of the experience is that you don't need plastic cutlery for this. All finger foods at your finger tips. Gobble Gobble Food truck is located at 289 Huger Street in Charleston, SC. I'm not sure if they do multiple locations or just stay here next to the Palmetto Brewery as a permanent fixture, but on a balmy Thursday evening in February 2023, it was there and I took full opportunity for my dinner options. They accept major credit cards, as well as cash. While the area is definitely semi industrial, don't be intimidated by it all. It looks sketchy at night but it's okay when you're with friends and not alone. Physically speaking. As far as parking goes, your best bet would be the parking lot underneath the i-26. That would fit probably 20 ish cars or vehicles. If that's filled up, best thing to do is to find street parking nearby and walk on over. If you are big on CARTA public transport or even the DASH shuttles, consider the right routes for you and head on down. Oh of course, Uber and Lyft are always there if you need them. It was cool to check Gooble Gobble food truck out in Charleston South Carolina. One of the cool things in the area.
