Outstanding hand-made screens and windows, just like you could have gotten in the 1960s. Like a lot of long-standing shops, this place has old pictures on the wall --- only here, you feel like you've walked into them. Our house was missing a few storm windows, and had a few others due for replacement; I ordered up a set from Robertson's. The largest panes wouldn't fit in my little car, so I asked about delivery options; Robertson's doesn't deliver, but will give you a business card for Metro Delivery, which worked out just fine. Prices were on par with Home Depot or Lowe's, but the flexibility, responsiveness, and overall experience were a world better. The windows themselves are nicely made --- I wouldn't go as far as "works of art" as they're fairly low-tech (strips of gasket, mitre-cut aluminum), but reasonable materials and solid workmanship. Definitely my go-to for screens & windows, either normal-ish or very custom. read more

If you need storm doors, storm windows or screens--and if you live in Michigan, you will need them sooner or later--make sure you buy them at Robertsons. I just finished shopping around for a storm door, and after pricing it at every conceivable place in town, ended up ordering from Robertson's. What I ended up ordering was a welded aluminum pre-hung door. Trapp Door Co., Model #108. Some places wanted $100 more for the same door. Home Depot and Lowes have doors for half the price, but they're really chintzy, and didn't come in a big enough size for this opening. Service was great. We're installing the door, but they still came over to measure it and make sure that they were ordering the right size. A class act, all around. read more

I'd like to give Robertson's three out of five stars, however I can't say that the experience was "A-OK". I am someone that holds vendors accountable and expects them to follow through with the promises they make which include timelines and customer service. While my experience with Robertson's was good during pre-sales, it fell short when requesting service for the product which was installed. In the first case, Jay indicated that he would coordinate a service time with me, but it was only after I followed up with him a second time was I able to coordinate an actual appointment with him. When the appointment was scheduled I expected the service technician to knock on the front door of the house / ring the doorbell to allow me to review the work completed. Unfortunately, he knocked on the storm door only which was positioned at the other end of the house furthest from my office and I was unable to hear him knocking. When I called the store to ask Jay if they were still able to keep their appointment, he was very terse and became quite belligerent suggesting that he'd always take the word of one of his employees over mine rather than trying to understand what had indeed happened. While their products appear (at least so far) to be solid, the customer service, especially post-sales, is severely lacking. read more

Wow, these people know windows and doors like nobody's business. After going to both Lowe's and Stadium Hardware for what seemed like a simple repair to two of my windows, no one had the piece I needed. The guy working at Stadium Hardware recommended this place, and thank goodness for that! I walked in, the lady knew exactly what piece I needed, got it, installed it in the one window I brought with me, and showed me how to install it so I could do the other window myself when I got home. I was in and out in five minutes, and it only cost me $1.50! Next time I need anything for a window or door, now I know not to waste my time with a hardware store and come straight to the experts! read more

Why did I delay having new storms/screens installed on my house? I fiddled around looking at Menards, Lowes and Home Depot and could never quite commit because I wasn't sure of my measurements, their installation fees were too high and the quality of the windows didn't seem much better than the old aluminum ones I had that looked awful, leaked air, and would fall down like a guillotine when I raised the storms up. When I finally went to Robertson's, everything fell into place. They came and measured my 12 windows so I knew the dimensions were correct. They returned a few weeks later and did the install in a couple of hours. I love my windows! They improve the look of my house and provide better insulation and work like a charm. read more

This is my favorite business in ann arbor! They provide good products, excellent service, and fair prices. Over the past four years they have installed 5 storm doors, rescreened most of our window screens and made a new screen for an odd shaped window. When a storm door closer was too strong they replaced with a different type that opened easier for no charge. They also offer pet/kid proof screens that really work (tested out by a 150lb dog who saw a squirrel). If you need storms or screens, this is the place to go. read more

Never got the quote...Never got a phone call. 6 weeks later...I called them...no yet I was told....I called again after a month....was told that they didn't have a patio application that they could do for us....so I asked if they could give me a quote for a screen door installment...they said sure....one month later...no quote...no phone call. Not too happy with this place. Had to have a back door half screen re-done last year because it started to rip out for no reason that I could discern. Took owner of company's word (although feeling skeptical) that someone in my household was to blame. I was having contractors in a lot to do some work so I shrugged and paid. The new screen ripped out again by the end of the summer for no reason that I can discern. I know it was not due to any carelessness here and can only think either poor workmanship or materials. In any event, I am not returning to pay for a new screen every single year and will go elsewhere. I purchased the door from this business and am disappointed at the outcome. read more

We have a 90-year-old house with "oriel"-style windows (2/3 lower pane, 1/3 upper). Each window has slightly different proportions. The old storms were the traditional 50/50 and looked terrible. Jay came out and carefully measured our windows, then offered us several options. He had great advice. We went with what he recommended, and we couldn't be happier with the results. He and another gentleman did the actual installation, which was surprisingly quick. We plan to go back to Robertson's for storm doors. Highly recommended. read more

We have used Robertson's Storm and Screen for over 20 years. Having had them do two of our houses completely over that period of time and having recommended them via word of mouth many times, I see that they are consistently honest, competent and easy to deal with. When I needed storms/screens I went to their location on S. Maple and looked at their display models. After getting a general idea of what I needed, they came out within a day or two and developed a detailed proposal. We opted for them to install our new storm window/screen combinations and storm doors and they took care of everything including a permit from the Old West Side Historic Association. The whole installation was less than half a day for 2 storm doors and 22 windows. read more

I was looking for an odd tension spring for a screen repair that I knew the Big Box guys would not have. I stopped in at Robertsons, told them what I was looking for and within 30 seconds the very nice person behind the counter produced a match. Only needed one and they wouldn't take my money. If you just want to buy a door or get a screen repaired, I imagine these folks are just like one of the gasoline stations at "Four Corners". In my case, I purchased a screen door and had a dog door drop shipped to Robertson's, which they advised with zero uncertainty they could install in the door. Well, if you don't expect them to read the instructions shipped with the dog door and don't mind a dog door that looks like it was rigged by Rube Goldberg, then you'll be satisfied. In my case, I was not. The outside facing of the dog door is a mishmash of riveted aluminum framing in two different colors - whereas the instructions clearly state that the framing should be done on the inside - and, because of this choice, I am unable to mount the metal closure on the door. When I reported my dissatisfaction to shopkeeper Jay, his response was to first try to intimidate me and then to rudely advise he was fully booked. So, avoid the extra requests and don't expect a courteous response to any customer satisfaction issues ... or go somewhere else where they care about craftsmanship and customer relations. read more
