My wife and I went into Dexter Cabinet & Countertop on a Saturday afternoon to get an estimate for cabinets and counters for our new kitchen. It seemed like a nice place with some good options for cabinets and counters. Del was the only one there and helped answer a few questions for us, informing us that he was the "counter guy" and that Tim was not in that day to do our cabinet estimate. That was fine, Del took our information and kitchen details to leave for Tim to contact us with a cabinet estimate. Del seemed knowledgeable about counters and that he'd do a good job with our counter estimate once Tim could get our cabinets done. 5 days later after calling once and emailing Tim, we hadn't heard anything back. We just bought the house and the 3-4 week lead time for ordering cabinets is part of the critical path of our remodel. It has been over 2 weeks now and we haven't been contacted once. We clearly were either not a priority for them or they lost/ignored our request for an estimate. They get two stars because they seem like their product is good and other reviewers have claimed that they do good work. We wouldn't know since they wouldn't even get to the point of giving us an estimate for our business. Make sure to call ahead to ensure that Tim or Del is in before driving over there, don't rely on them to contact you. read more

Great job of pricing and installation; they worked patiently with every quirk we threw at them. They even arranged for a plumber, which too often is the customer's responsibility. The price seemed to not be out of line with the big box stores but the process at those stores was pretty convoluted while Dexter Cabinet put it into one nice package (although we decided to purchase a different faucet than the several good ones they offered in their package). After a couple go-rounds at Lowe's, we threw up our hands and went with the more "comfortable" (and LOCAL) Dexter Cabinet option. Glad we did. I would however recommend that potential customers take some responsibility for keeping the communication going. Contact them if you don't hear back when you expect to. That worked really well for us. This seems to be the way to work with most contractors, we've found. read more

We did a kitchen gut remodel of our 1960 ranch, purchased from the original owners. Dexter Cabinets provided our cabinets, as well as finish carpentry. I cannot compliment them enough - Del, Tim, and the crew were fantastic, from start to finish. They steered us to the Pioneer brand of cabinets, with which we are thrilled. The quality is excellent, and we are constantly complimented on them. They worked with B&B Hardwood on cladding for our beams, as well as a beautiful walnut mantle for our fireplace. What I liked best about working with them was their positive attitude and the sense of collaboration with me as a client who had pretty strong opinions about what I wanted - their answer to every request was always "sure, no problem." Dexter Cabinets remodeled our kitchen in the fall of 2014. The principals, Del and Tim Young, were great to work with, and gave us a beautiful result. We were looking for a mix of new installation and re-work of existing structures. That combination resulted in a few unexpected wrinkles, but Del&Tim worked out all the problems gracefully. Dexter Cabinets itself specializes in the cabinetry and counter tops, but they have an excellent group of other craftspeople they work with regularly for electrical, plumbing, and carpentry, so Del and Tim basically functioned as contractors, coordinating everything. (We hired our own people for painting and wood floors). My wife is thrilled with the results, and, amazingly, the project finished on budget and on time -- the whole process took less than two months! I highly recommend these guys. read more

Went to Dexter Cabinets & Countertop today to simply get an estimate to replace the 25 year old formica countertops in my Mothers home in Ann Arbor. Her condo has been on the market for a month and despite a number of showings, no offers. I have been in the home building and land development business for over 30 years, most recently in California. In Michigan for a few days to help my Mom. Met with Del, and brought a rough drawing of the areas we want to replace. After some discussion, I was questioned by Del as to why we would want to make these improvements, told that I don't know the Ann Arbor market, and that we may want to just replace the Formica with more Formica? Apparently he was put off by my experience with volume home builders? All we wanted to do was get an estimate on some better materials which he finally got to after insulting me. If you are planning to do a kitchen or bathroom remodel, and you are shopping for cabinets/countertops, here's a little info for you. There are the usual Lowes/Home Depot chains of course, but we wanted something a bit 'nicer' - and we had a specific configuration of drawers in mind. We though we would have to go to a custom cabinet place to get what we hoped for, so someone we know suggested that we check out Dexter Cabinet and Countertop. We went there thinking that they sold custom cabinetry - but they are actually just a vendor for pre-manufactured cabinet 'sections'. My main disappointment with this business though, was that I felt like they took a very lax approach and had no sense of 'urgency' to meet customer requests...as in, they took their own sweet time addressing my request for an estimate. Maybe this is just my bad luck - but it took a long time, and multiple follow-ups on my part (I had to drive out to Dexter in person more than once), to finally just get an estimate from them. Also, from my very first communication with them I mentioned that we had a specific project deadline, and they lead me to believe my project timeline would be no problem. But, after they finally gave me the estimate they also told me that they would not be able to meet my project deadline after all. This ended up being a big waste of time for me, and really put a delay into our remodeling project - total bummer. I can't speak to final product quality and installation services, because we ended up not doing business with Dexter Cabinet and Countertop. In the end we purchased cabinetry from IKEA - yes, IKEA. We realized that a place like Dexter Cabinet and Countertop just sells standard cabinet pieces that you configure to your own 'custom' layout, and that's exactly the same thing that IKEA does with cabinetry. But IKEA had way more style choices (from traditional to modern), and IKEA was able to offer us exactly the configuration we wanted for a FRACTION of the price that Dexter Cabinet and Countertops quoted. read more

I just had all new quartz countertops installed in our kitchen by Dexter Cabinet and Countertop. The job was huge. We had a lot of counter to replace. Not only that, what we were replacing was tile counters.....a lot of tile counter. We knew going in that tearing them out would be pricey and difficult. Dexter Cabinet did not bat an eye and their demo estimate was well below what we imagined. In fact, the entire job was at or below what we expected. No hidden costs and no surprises. I stopped in their shop to talk to Del Young and the very next day he was at my house taking measurements and I had an estimate in 1 1/2 business days. The whole process from estimate to completion was 3 1/2 weeks and that included Thanksgiving week. As for the counters----WOW!! Gorgeous and perfect! At the end of long road of research and picking material for a new Kitchen, the wife and I requested bids (Spring 2014) from three major companies companies in Ann Arbor. The renovation included new tile flooring (600 sq ft), new cabinets (Merillat Masterpiece) and countertop/backsplash (Cambria Quartz). The estimates of the three companies ranged from $10,000 to $20,000 over our target price. Note that these prices were for the exact same cabinets (Merillat) the same tile (selected from Virginia tile) and same countertop material (Cambria quartz). So we were disappointed that after all of our research we missed our budget. However at the last minute before giving up, we called Dexter Cabinets. Within a week we had an estimate that was below our target budget for all of the same products that were put out to bid. The project from the first day of deconstruction to the last day of placing the countertop/backsplash took only 5 weeks. The job looks beautiful. We couldn't be more pleased with Dexter Cabinets and all of their contractors. Everyone kept us informed of the next steps. They were polite and professional. The costs were what they indicated on the estimate. Highly recommended. read more
