Roberto's Cafe is the BEST Mexican restaurant in the area! I've been numerous times over the past seven years I've lived here and it's always spot on! Stellar service as well! My last visit was a week ago Friday, around 5 pm (I'd skipped lunch). My 92-year-old dad and I used to come together but sadly he passed away in December 2023. This recent visit was kinda in his honor, so I ordered his favorite dish: Enchiladas Rancheras with two cheese enchiladas. Simple but delicious! First, you're served Roberto's chips and salsa, both made on-site. There's no better salsa anywhere! It's the exact salsa recipe I remember from a chain in the San Francisco Bay Area I frequented in the 1980s and '90s called Pedro's Restaurant & Cantina. I used to visit Pedro's location in Palo Alto at the Stanford Shopping Center almost every week until they closed in the late 1990s. I visited Pedro's Santa Clara and Los Gatos locations as well. Roberto's reminds me very much of Pedro's, just smaller. When I first ate the chips and salsa at Roberto's years ago it instantly triggered many wonderful Mexican dining memories! It's weird talking about chips and salsa this way, but I'm a finicky salsa critic. Most I find are very inferior. Roberto's salsa is perfect in every way from its flavor, consistency, and spiciness, to the right amount of heat! Beware, it may be too "hot" for some wimpy palates. It's also available for purchase in various sizes to enjoy later. My cheese enchiladas were perfect, my dad would have been pleased (RIP dad!). The rice and refried beans were okay too. I always dabble some of the salsa over my meal. This time I dined in the upstairs Cantina since the outside patio was already packed as was the downstairs main dining area. It can get busy at times with a wait of 20-45 minutes not uncommon. I cannot wait to return and enjoy some of my other Roberto's favorites like Carnitas, Fajitas, Shrimp Stuffed Chile Relleno, and Carne Asada! What a S.H. one of or maybe the worse mexican food I have ever had. Party of 5...every dish was DISGUSTING. You are better off getting some frozen burritos at Vons...Do not waste your money at this slop house. This place is void of ownership or responsible management. No caring owner would ever allow crap food like this to be served. I can only imagine what the kitchen looks like. This place would be shut down if based on its food. Every thing we ordered was amazing, we ending up taking so much home with us. The chilli verde just melted in your mouth. The enchiladas and rellenos were smothered in cheese. They had big chucks of lobster in that burrito. 10/10 would recommend and will be coming here again, when I'm back in town. Came here dinner after my long drive from LA on a Wednesday night. Surprisingly, the wait was about 30 minutes or so. We opted to dine upstairs as it's more open with a bar, TV's and looks to be more lively with music playing. Ordered the albondigas soup and steak fajitas. While waiting for our food, snacked on the complimentary chips and salsa. The chips were warm and tasted like they were made fresh. The salsa was a little bit spicy that would make the top of my head start to sweat. The albondigas came out first and it didn't taste like the traditional soup I've had in LA. The soup is traditionally clear, but this one looked more and tasted like a stew. It wasn't bad, but not what I was expecting. The fajitas came out chopped up like carne asada in a burrito. Because it was chopped up, the meat came out burnt and dry for the most part. I wished it was sliced instead like most other places I've fajitas at. I bet you they just used the burrito meat and just sautéed it with veggies and called it a fajita. I thought service was just ok, nothing really outstanding. Very mediocre food. We ordered and got the food immediately which was a little odd. Normally I'd be happy with fast service but this was too fast. And the way the food was plated it made sense. Looked like it was thrown together. My kid got the kids cheese enchilada, and it came completely sogged out swimming in sauce. He couldn't even find the enchilada. When he did it was totally soggy. Way too much sauce and cheese. Like a bowl of sauce with an enchilada somewhere in it. Husband got taquitos they were just ok. Not very fresh. I got the carnitas plate. Pretty tasteless. They should also clean up the meat some. It had all the fatty parts very oily and the rice was soggy maybe from the juice of the meat. Im originally from the Bay Area so I know quality carnitas, this wasn't it. We got a tropical margarita, but it tasted exactly like original. They also charge for using credit card. Trying to get a drink at the bar while you wait for your table is like being the ugly guy with a good sense of humor waiting for Sydney Sweeney to notice you...good luck. Yes, yes, 1000 times yes! Amazing food and service. This place goes down in history as my best chimichanga ever! Good chips and salsa. Big, comfy booths. I think everyone in town knew this was the place to be, as they were busy! They were keeping up and our food came out quickly, so don't let the full parking lot deter you. I had the shredded beef chimichanga and it was made to perfection - lots of lean shredded beef and the melty cheese was on the inside. The hubby had a Mexican pizza and said it was really good. [PLEASE READ] I had a really disappointing experience here. At first, there was a nice older lady who helped us with our order. She was very polite, and when we asked if we could bring our own drinks from the car, she said, "Yes, no problem." But when we came back with our drinks, the manager suddenly came over and rudely told us, "Hey, no drinks allowed." The way he said it felt aggressive, and he seemed really angry for no reason. Instead of just asking us to put the drinks away, he even tried to snatch them from us, as if they were his. That was completely unnecessary. What made it worse was that he kept circling our table, making us feel uncomfortable, like we had done something wrong. And the biggest hypocrisy? He had his own Modelo Beer in the restaurant! If outside drinks aren't allowed, why does he get to bring his own? It's unfair and unprofessional. This young male manager clearly doesn't care about his job. I'm not sure why the reviews describe this place as fun with a vibe, but it's just a regular Mexican restaurant. That said, the salsa was excellent. The beef fajitas were just okay, but you get a lot of food for the price. Their well tequila isn't great so splurge for call. What was disappointing was our server tonight. He was uninterested and tried to advise us that the fajitas wouldn't be enough to split between two adults, which was not true at all. He seemed very annoyed he had to wait on us and didn't even cash us out when we paid. If he had been the least bit friendly, the experience would have been much better. read more

Solid Mexican food option in Mammoth. My family and I came for dinner on a Saturday night and there was about a 20 minute wait. There are 2 floors to the restaurant but the upstairs is more lively since it has a bar. Note - I didn't see an elevator so keep this in mind if you need accommodations. The menu offers all the classics you could want and the portions are huge. Seriously consider sharing entrees. I don't think anyone at our table finished their food. Another plus - they sell margarita pitchers! Is it the best margarita you'll ever have? No, but it's a margarita. They had a door open and when a gust of wind would blow by, it pushed the smoke from the grill into the dining area. I am from Chula Vista, CA (near the U.S./Mexican border) and so I'm used to authentically-tasting Mexican cuisine. This place nailed it for me! TL;DR: RESTAURANT OVERCHARGED US BY MORE THAN $500+ AND IT WASN'T AN ACCIDENTAL ZERO. Service was also not great. We visited Roberto's a few weeks ago as I noticed the reviews were pretty good. I was also craving nachos that day and they have happy hour woot woot!! The restaurant was pretty busy the day of at 2pm but they had a couple tables available. First of all, I noticed that the restaurant was extremely crowded at 100% capacity. They have plexiglass but I think most places have relaxed restrictions. Their menus are still QR codes though so we didn't have to touch anything. The tables and bar seats, however, were really dirty so I am not sure how well they clean the tables. They serve chips and salsa at the start which was great because we were starving. We were ready to order within a minute of sitting down but the servers just never looked at as and we tried waving them down, and when we finally got someone, the server was just not as ...friendly... with us as to other people. The service afterwards was pretty normal. The food came relatively slowly but the free chips and salsa helped. In terms of taste, the food was pretty okay--the margaritas were nice and refreshing and my favorite was probably the potato skins. The nachos, however, were kinda oily partly due to the cheese they use and the fish tacos were dry. I think someone mentioned this before, but you can't expect mammoth food to be like the food from larger cities and I get that. The reason I am giving this restaurant 2 stars though is because they overcharged us by $500+ dollars and it wasn't as if they added an extra zero or anything--it was a completely different number with digits that weren't even the ones included in our total. I would have assumed it was an accident but I just didn't see big enough parties there when we were eating to actually have ordered over $500. Just be extra careful when you review your credit card bill or even better, visit another restaurant. Came here with the BF last Friday. Waited maybe 15 minutes and we were seated in a booth even though we were just a group of two which was nice. BF got the spicy mango margarita (22 oz.) and I got the peligroso spicy margarita (12 oz.). While the mango margarita was delicious and tasted like it had real mango in it, it was not spicy at all. My "dangerously spicy" margarita was not spicy at all either - the only dangerous thing about it was how much alcohol was in it since it was so strong I could barely drink it. I know, a good problem to have, but we actually like legitimately spicy margaritas so this was a little disappointing. Chips and salsa were great. The salsa with the chips were actually spicy which we appreciated. BF ordered the carnitas plate. Carnitas looked a little dry but tasted good. I got the two item combo plate with a chicken enchilada and crispy chicken taco with rice and beans. Flavors were good. We were both incredibly full and could barely finish our plates. Portions are huge! Everything came out at a decent rate considering how busy it was on a Friday evening (we got seated around 6:30/7 p.m.). Servers were nice and they refilled our chips and salsa once and even offered to refill it a second time. The beer was good and cold. We got a mexican pizza and a combo plate with a tamale and an enchilada. Both plates were HUGE, and each looked like a sloppy pile of greasy cheese, rice, beans, and sauce. The mexican pizza was listed as an appetizer, but it was HUGE, so while we planned to split one appetizer and one main plate, the two of us couldn't finish either plate. We left behind about half the mexican pizza and a lot of rice/beans on the combo plate, and felt pretty guilty about that. Both plates looked very unappetizing and the taste/flavors were just ok. When we got the bill it does say there might be a surcharge when using a credit card! but we used a debit card pretty sure it's not ok do that. Server also only checked on us once when we were done. Overall good experience at Roberto's Cafe. Huge portions, fair prices, and a great place to grab a bite to eat. Ambiance is rustic and fits the mammoth area well. The downstairs is the restaurant but their is also a second story that has the bar that opens at 3pm. I went to watch the Super Bowl that they hosted up stairs with a bunch of TVs available to watch the game. The service was great, even with the football game on, the staff was on point and would come around periodically to take drink orders and take away finished plates. Never felt like I was needing for anything. Happy hour is also a great deal and include both drink and food specials. I ordered the hot wings and enjoyed them. For my entree, I ordered the grande burrito which is absolutely massive! Could easily have fed two people. Overall the food was pretty good, I wouldn't say it was the best Mexican food I've had but it was perfect after a half day of boarding at mammoth. All in all, would absolutely come back here when I'm in mammoth! read more

As I feared, another terrible Mexican place recommended by howlies conflating portion sizes with quality. There were warning signs all over the menu; black olives, shredded lettuce, every dish sour cream. Everything drowned in canned sauce, terrible runny guacamole, and a salty aftertaste on everything. Really tried to give them the benefit of the doubt, but truly terrible. We go chimichanga burrito, carne asada burrito, chicken enchiladas combo meal, and the chicken salad. Chimichanga was everyone's favorite. Huge portions but very salty food. My husband did not like the sauce of the carne asada. The chicken enchilada was big, but too much of the pre-seasoned shredded chicken stuffed inside. Rice and beans were delicious. We all came home with left overs. They warned us they were short staffed, so there was primarily only seating upstairs and we waited about 15 minutes. Hostess was very pleasant.
