This is a review is for Dr. Esther Yang who has taken over this practice. I confirmed my appointment online after-hours due to a busy schedule (love it) and was able to download my paperwork to send in my info to them in advance using a fax app I have on my phone. Further confirmation for the appointment was given via text, with the address being texted to me the day of. Social distancing guidelines have been taped on the floor and you are still allowed to try on glasses as long as you set them aside for the Dr. to sanitize afterwords. I was allowed to keep my mask on throughout my entire examination and there was a piece of plexiglass added to the equipment to block airflow when the Dr. had to look in on the other side through her lenses. I brought in my existing glasses and she took them briefly to determine what my last prescription had been. I was in and out with my updated prescription printed in under 45 minutes, from start to finish. Hand sanitizer at the front desk on the way out completed my journey. Oh, and did I mention that they take Medi-Cal insurance? :) read more

The last time I had an eye exam was in 2013... When I graduated from college. Lol, so it's no surprise that I was way overdue for a checkup! So glad I was only 15 minutes away from this office and found parking right in front. I was greeted by a gentleman at the reception desk with some nice spectacles that was very patient with me as I tried on a variety of frames during my wait. Dr. Kummer was great. Nice, informative, and straight to the point! I'm not sure why there are a handful of negative reviews. Maybe come with a positive attitude and people will give you the same vibe? Who knows... I will say that the other staff members were on their phones (I came on a Saturday, maybe it's less busy during this time), but that didn't bother me too much. It would be a different story if I needed help and they were just ignoring me...... Hopefully that doesn't happen!!! Anyway, I chose some cute frames and picked them up today. I feel Dr. Kummer deserves a 5star review. He was very professional but not distanced. And there was no unnecessary talk either which I liked a lot. (We went a place last year. The doctor was excessively nice and talk a lot of stuff which made us felt good at beginning. Later you found out that their glasses are all 1k+ per pair and conveniently out of the ones that the insurance covers. We end up didn't buy anything from there and never gone back.) Here is my opinion with doctor Kummer: 1, Good for people hate up-selling. They don't try to up sell you. You can comfortably choose whatever you like and ask questions. 2, Good for people don't like unnecessary talks but also expect polite customer service. The ladies there were nice and patient. They were all doing there own things. Not like someplace ladies just chitchat about their lunch or kids or husbands and do not care about their customers. I have been a patient of Dr. Kummer on-and-off for over 20 years. If you want an optometrist who can and will spot a problem with your eyesight, he is the man. From a corneal abrasion to a cataract, if Dr. Kummer spots a problem, he will damn sure diagnose it, direct you to the appropriate party to treat the issue, then welcome you back with open arms to have your prescription filled when you are fully healed. His staff has not always been so friendly (and by friendly, I mean professional), but I refuse to hold him accountable for their actions. HE has been consistent the entire time I've known him, which is the better portion of my life. I read a recent review stating Dr. Kummer's office does not carry designer frames. That is a LIE. He carries everything from MCM (which is not an easy brand to find) to Dolce & Gabbana to Tom Ford. Those are all high-end designer and nice ones, at that. His office isn't that large and the selection is somewhat limited, but he has a good selection considering... Dr. Kummer stays busy, which is another indicator that he is great at his craft. It is rare that I have not seen at least a couple other patients in his office at the same time as I am there. He is punctual. I have never known him not to give a thorough examination or overbook and leave patients waiting to see him. Street parking can be a pain sometimes because he is located in a high traffic area, but that's not his fault. Arrive earlier than your scheduled appointment and you should be just fine. Dr. Kummer is also very gracious. I referred someone to him who had a lot of problems with their eyeglasses and he humbly rectified the matter. People who take issue with Dr. Kummer are likely the problem. I have never known Dr. Kummer to be anything other than patient, caring and professional. He also never misses a beat in sending reminders to patients when it is time to have their vision checked again. He retains meticulous records of your previous prescriptions, the brand of contact lenses you wear, etc. If your budget is limited, choose frames that fit your budget. Don't expect to get a $400 frame and $300 lenses for $200. No one will afford you that, especially in Los Angeles. Dr. Kummer accepts Medi-Cal and Medicare, which a lot of other GOOD optometrists do not do. Dr. Kummer's prices are also very fair. I can attest to a lot, considering my recent visits to him and the referrals I've made over the years. I don't know anyone who has ever expressed displeasure with his services. If you see a disparaging review about Dr. Kummer's services, it is likely a case of "you can't please all of the people all of the time". read more

I went to Dr. Kummer for over 30 years. He was amazing. He took his time and got it right the first time you went. Also, Beatrice that worked in his office for decades was an excellent employee. No matter what she called you back asap. Also helped you with insurance and did not try to scam you into paying more than your budget allowed which changed over the years. When I called to make and appointment and found out Dr. Kummer and his great staff were all gone I was so upset. After 30 years of loyalty he could at least of called us old timers or written a thank us a thank you note from him and staff. but, he didn't. I won't rate the new dr. but I will neve go back. Now this is just my experience when I went to the new Dr at Robertson optometry. She is extremely nice and pleasant but, I had to go back 3 or 4 times to change the new prescription. So I got tired of going back and since I had already paid for the contacts and (i think glasses) she was not right for me. I want to go to someone that knows the first time what your prescription should be and the last visit I told her can't see close she said were reading glasses. Which was new to me and that does come with age. But. the reading glasses aren't helping me. So now I working with my insurance company to cover a new eye dr because you ae only covered once every 2 years. (check your insurance for eyes beforehand) I didn't do that. Again, maybe everyone else had a good experience but for me it was pretty upsetting going back again and again anda settling for prescription that wasn't correct. read more

I'll admit I was a little apprehensive about a new OD after Dr. Kummer retired, but am quite pleased with the service and professionalism of the new crew. They were efficient, on time, and did a great job examining my eyes and fitting new multi focal contacts. The charges were reasonable and they offer free parking in the new location across the street. They have earned my continued business and I will refer friends and family to them when the opportunity arises. Give them a try, there is a lot to like. read more

No longer owned by Dr. Kummer called to make an appointment to get new contacts, I had broken my glasses and ordered a set on contacts to have while I waited for my appointment. I went in on my appointment day and turns out no one knew about my emergency contact order, the person I spoke to failed to order my contacts! They had a pair that I purchased, They seemed very un organized, had my eye exam and took prescription elsewhere to get my glasses! Turns out they filled out my prescription wrong and the other optometrist had to call them several times to get the prescription corrected! Never had this issues with Dr. Kummer! I got my eyes tested at another location and gave faxed it to them on Tuesday. My boyfriend needed to get new glasses, already had his prescription and Kummer's office was a couple blocks away from our home. I read some questionable reviews but he liked it for the convenience. There's only a few meters for parking out front (that's why there's one star off, I know it's something they can't control but parking is tough so it's nice to know before you go)... anyway, we parked at Walgreens and then walked across the street and we were greeted right away by one of the women. So a girl walks into an optometrist.... ...and comes out with awesome vision. No joke. I went to Dr. Kummer, despite the negative reviews, because he's walking distance from work and his exam price was on par with everyone else (and cheaper than Target!). I'm also a glutton for punishment because I LOVE giving negative bitch-slap reviews on yelp. But i can't on this one. I was greeted with an introduction and handshake from the Dr., & given the most thorough examination I've ever had. And i've gone to some real-live quack doctors when money was tight, including the last eye doctor that i visited who prescribed something totally wrong. I honestly felt Dr. Kummer took his time with me, even though there were other people waiting. He listened to my concerns and answered my questions satisfactorily. He corrected my vision with the proper prescriptions--and that's what it's all about. Maybe he comes across as a bit stand off-ish to others, but what do you expect ---he's from Brooklyn. I suppose if you want a kissy-kissy , warm & fuzzy doctor you should probably go see a psychologist, cuz it's not your vision that's the problem. I had no problem engaging him in conversation about Barolo and lasagne. In my book that ranks him as pretty cool. My experience was very positve--from the office staff, the cleanliness, the selection and the examination. I would recommend him to anyone that would ask. I really like this optometrist... besides the fact it's right across the street from my house. But Dr. Kummer is real sweet! He kept conversation. I've to say the customer service from these two Latina women, is not the best. They say hi in such a monotone manner and IM LATINA so I'm 100% not discriminating and pointing them out but wow, smile once in awhile, please, thank you. I found Dr. Kummer to be extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and professional. He explained to me more about my vision than any other optometrist in my entire 66 years. He obviously takes his work very seriously and is very good at it. I find that many health professionals who are perhaps more charming and voluble are often setting one up for a big $$$ kill. My impression of Dr. Kummer is that he is a man of complete honesty and dedication; like he doesn't care what you buy, his only concern is to give you the most thorough and accurate eye examination possible. Dr. Kummer is well disposed and super affable, during my eye exam there was never any pressure and I always felt that the sole objective was to find me the best prescription. I think Dr. Kummer is great! My gf went to see him first because he was in her network and close. She said he was lovely so I decided to see him as well for a check up. I didn't think my vision had changed and told him so. He did all the tests, etc. and said I was right, my vision hadn't changed. I told him I wasn't going to be buying new glasses from him since Coastal Contacts offers such great deals. We had a pleasant conversation about his antique original sunglass ads from Paris. My family has been going to Dr. Kummer for YEARS! Probably 10 + at this point. I referred my sister and nephew there as well and they too have been long time customers. We love seeing familiar faces every year. The staff here has been so helpful to us (and honest). I mean, do they throw confetti and scream our name while ringing bells when we walk through the door, no. However, they are nice, helpful, honest, respectful and patient (it takes us forever to select our glasses). I have never, not once had a bad experience with Dr. Kummer and his staff. If you want bells and whistles and people fawning all over you, then maybe this isn't for you. The selection of eyewear here makes it difficult for us to choose every time. There is a wide selection for all ranges. Of course, I tend to LOVE the ones I can't afford...story of my life. My eyes have gone through several changes as I age, and Dr. Kummer has been able to make the appropriate adjustments and found the right contact lenses that make it possible for me to see clearly and comfortably. On my last week of contacts and started going through my Insurance Provider's network. My last check up for contacts was a joke, the place had someone for my vision and someone separate (with separate charge) for my contacts (see my review for Jeannine Scheinhorn...) Today I picked up my new glasses at Dr. Kummer's office. I have been going to Dr. Kummer for about 20 years. I am an exhibiting artist in Los Angeles, and I having good glasses is very important to me. He and and his staff are extremely competent, friendly and skilled. His service and expertise is something I've depended on for many years. I had a scratched cornea (from gardening)a few weeks ago, Dr Kummer checked my eye and prescribed an antibiotic, and I went back and he checked it again to make sure it healed correctly. I have been a long time patient of dr kummer and I really didnt want to order glasses online so i called only to find he had been replaced by dr yang. I asked if we could just remake and old pair of glasses but they were discontinued. dr yang offered the option of doing a home visit she came after a busy day at work to show me similar glasses and took my measurements for my progressive lens. really amazed that she would go out of her way to accommodate me during this time, will be going back once covid is over for my yearly exam! read more

I went to see Dr. Kummer for the 1st time last Summer, and I actually had a very pleasant experience. For starters, I wasn't made to wait. I was taken in at my appointment time, just as scheduled. Once inside, Dr. Kummer was very friendly and listened closely to what I had to say. His equipment is also some of the newest there is making my check up a whole lot easier (no dilating my eyes, no scary, strong puff of air either). Dr. Kummer's staff was also extremely helpful. One of his assistants helped me look through various frame styles in order to find the right one. I almost felt like apologizing because I took so long in choosing a frame! However, she helped me the entire time. She even gave me an itemized receipt (without me asking) for my flex account reimbursement. Because of how well everything went during my appointment, I will be returning again this Summer for my yearly check up and hope to have the same experience. read more

I came here because of a recommendation from someone I trust. Dr. Kummer was very nice and provided a very thorough eye exam. He was able to answer all my questions and provided excellent service. After my exam I was shown what my options were to correct my astigmatism. I feel that their glasses are very reasonably priced even for someone like me who is on a budget. Been going to Kummer for 15 years. He and his lab are the ONLY place that consistently get my prescription correct. I have a tricky base curve and am sensitive to cheap lens materials. I've been to expensive Cedars Sinai eye doctors as well as cheapo discount stores, and NO one has ever gotten my prescription right except Dr. Kummer. Only Kummer was able to suss out the correct base curve for my eyes and that I have to use a certain type of high-index lens because of subtle imperfections in lesser grade high index lenses that cause nausea. As a result, I can see perfectly. What more could you want from an eye doctor? read more
