This is the BEST BEST BEST place to get BBQ in Southern California. This is an honor that I do not bestow lightly. The food is as good as Bludsoe's (in some cases better), the people are about 1000x times friendlier, and there is a place to sit down. This little café is on the north side of Artesia Blvd., just east of Atlantic Avenue. The front is not much to look at - they are working through issues with the city regarding signage and the landlord should be repainting the inside soon. Find yourself a street spot and come in, because the interior is darling. Wooden chairs and tables with vinyl red checked tablecloths and cute little signs (e.g., don't cry over spilt milk, it isn't beer, etc.). You order through windows that are cut through the wall that originally divided the spaces - one side is the kitchen and the other is the café. They have a tremendous selection - ribs, chicken, brisket, links - and great sides/dessert. We had the Spare Rib Dinner ($13) with Coleslaw and Baked Beans and the Beef Rib Dinner (Weekends only - $14) with coleslaw and greens ($1 extra for greens), both of which are served with two pieces of white bread, a medium mac and cheese ($3), cornbread ($1/piece), a can of lime Shasta ($1), a bottle of water ($1) and banana pudding (can't remember). Here is the 411: Spare Ribs: 3 meaty spare ribs are smoked to tender perfection and fall off the bone. Most people do baby backs, which are a more tender cut. But, spare ribs just need more attention - more cooking at lower temperatures. The result is perfectly smoked meat. We got the mild sauce on the side, which was perfect over these meaty ribs. Beef Ribs: 3 meaty beef ribs (angus beef - the good stuff) are again smoked to tender perfection after being seasoned with an incredible dry rub. Very few people do beef ribs, and these were outstanding. So good, in fact, that you should skip the sauce. Trust me. Coleslaw: crisp green cabbage in a tangy, creamy dressing with celery seed. Simply executed, excellent flavor. I highly recommend adding a little of their BBQ sauce. I got the mild, which is smoky and slightly sweet. I should try the spicy next time for a comparison. Baked Beans: now this is what I am talking about! After being recently disappointed by another BBQ joint, these are what baked beans are supposed to be. Little white beans cooked until they are tender but not mushy in a smoky and slightly sweet sauce. On point! Greens: the classic blend of collards and green beans where the bitterness has been cooked away and seasoned to perfection. Again, I recommend a little BBQ sauce. The greens don't need it, but the sauce is on point. Mac and Cheese: holy mackerel! The best that I have had outside of my own kitchen. Cheesy and creamy while being well seasoned (thyme, perhaps?) - this is an absolute flavor EXPLOSION. I don't like mac and cheese (it's for DH and the girl) and this is OUTSTANDING!!!! Cornbread: some of the best that I have had outside of my own kitchen. In fact, the Earls' might be better than mine. :/ The little muffins (the diameter of a standard muffin and about an inch thick) taste as though they are cooked in butter. They are served hot and are a little crisp on the side. SOOOOOOO good. Banana Pudding: Mrs. Tanya Earl brought us some of her OUTSTANDING, HOUSE MADE banana pudding. It will bring a tear to your eyes. Even if, like me, you don't care for pudding. A thin layer of white cake is over the creamy, sumptuous pudding. If you order the golden nugget, it comes over cornbread. I never would have ordered this without prompting, so you must get it. Robert and Tanya Earl will make you feel like FAMILY. I love these people and their lovely restaurant. I can't wait to come back! Maybe they will adopt me? :) Everything was delicious, everything was homemade, everything was perfectly seasoned. We drove out to long beach from the inland empire for almost an hour for my husband's bday . He loves BBQ so , I searched & searched here on yelp for the best BBQ place. Robert Earl's had one of the best ratings & let me tell you , 200 some people were not exaggerating when they said this place was the best. Yes, the food takes some time to be served, but I'd rather wait for perfection than food which sits under a heat lamp & that arrives in lightening bolt time to the table. The meats were seasoned just right & the ribs fell right off the bone! Their BBQ sauce was just as delicious . Hubby had the mild & I had the spicy one, which was just spicy enough to be enjoyed & not set your tongue on fire. I really enjoyed coming here. Told them it was my first time there and right away I got a "welcome to the family!" Greeting. The staff was so helpful, took their time making sure my order was right and didn't rush me in picking out what I wanted. I ordered the Mini Tex and true to its feeding sizes of 2-3 people, it did feed all 3 of us with meats left over. I wasn't super big on the BBQ sauce but they have different ones so I'm definitely coming back to see if another one that's not mild is a better match. Ribs were not dry and overlooked, they were juicy and tender. I really loved their baked beans! Kept me craving some the next day. This is new favorite BBQ joint. My wife and I had the MiniTex, and by all means, it is not small. It can easily fees four people. We chose the beef ribs, and beef brisket, which also comes with smoked chicken, a beef hotlink, and your choice of two sides. It was a mount of food, and it was finger-lickin'-kickin' good! I called to place a phone order, when the lady answered I tell her I'd like to place an order. I get an extended pause finished up with a sigh, followed by a "...hold on"....she then announces real rude "I need someone to take this order". The young man who took my order was pleasant, thank goodness. When I get there to get my order, a pleasant young lady rings me up, and said to pick up from the other window. I looked on Yelp for near by Bar B Q places Rober Earl's barbeque on Artesia in the city of Long Beach popped up so I called them a young woman by the name of Ja'nae took my phone order she was very professional on the phone it my first time calling she took her time and explained everything to me, I had a party of 6 to feed she suggested the lily text party platter it comes with Ribs,several pieces of chicken, rib tops, brisket and chicken links. On the meat you get a choice of beef or pork and a choice of regular, mild or hot barbeque sauce the food is seasoned great with or without sauce. With my order I also got half a loaf of white bread they also have wheat.If you order there it is about a 20minute wait I advise you to phone the order in.The inside is a little warm but they have fans they have a nice size dinning area with plenty of napkins on the table. Let me get this out of the way immediately. I hate to be blasphemous, but they are just as good as Bludsoe's. (And I love Bludsoe's!) There I said it. The meat is fall off the bone tender with the right smoky flavor, and the sauce is delicious, has a nice maple flavor to it. What I really appreciate is that they did not give me store bought side dishes. The mac and cheese was righteous, they used real cheese. (I know it seems like a no-brainer, but some places still don't get it.) The potato salad was fresh and had a nice twist to it, I can't name what it was that made it different, but it had a little twang to it :-) If you want top notch bbq and you are anywhere within driving distance, you must stop here, you will not regret it. read more

The boyfriend's buddy told us of this great BBQ place in Long Beach. How in the world did we not know about it?! Oh, hell no, we made a point to head out to Robert Earl's the very next day. I had the rip tips with hot BBQ sauce and Mac n cheese. The boyfriend had a dish with three types of meat and the mild BBQ sauce on the side. Let me tell you, we were sucking on those bones and licking our fingers like a zombie on the walking dead. The meat was smoked and seasoned to perfection. My rib tips were so good! The sauce was perfectly spicy (I was blowing my runny nose throughout the meal). Our complimentary dessert was some heavenly creation with corn bread and a fluffy cream. The cherry on top of our dining experience was the friendliness of the staff. Robert Jr. was so funny and patient while explaining the dishes to us. Robert Sr. came by a couple of times to make sure all was good. At Robert Earl's BBQ, they call the patrons "family" and that's just how we felt. Robert Earl's BBQ is good, don't get me wrong, but it wasn't as good as I'd hoped for. We ordered the brisket and pork ribs and split them so we could try both. I ordered the brisket with sauce on the side so I could enjoy that smokey flavor untainted by the sauce. I was hoping for some nice big slices, but what I got were a bunch of thin shavings that seemed like they'd been sitting in a tray of greasy drippings. The texture was kinda chewy and not falling apart. I really had to cut it up. Overall, I'd say the brisket was a bit of a let down. The pork ribs were better - falling off the bone and smokey. We got these with the spicy sauce and it was tasty with a little heat. I would definitely get the ribs again next time. All the sides were good. Beans, slaw and potato salad. The beans were my favorite (but not a real stand-out like the Rib Factory or Porky's). Very good BBQ overall. First of all, the location is in a bad neighborhood and parking is available only on the street. Highly recommend you call in or order online, then pickup out front. Do not advise parking and walking to this place. The sauces are what make the BBQ good at this place. You talk about a sincere kind Man. This man can really cook "Q" to the Bone and lives up to their claim which you will see on the attached photos. He will spend time and talk with you too! For $18 we got the 3 meat combo. I split it with my cousin and though we were sure we'd finish it, we lost. The meat was super tender and pretty flavorful and the price can't be beat. The service was great and everyone was extremely friendly. It's the kind of BBQ joint you want to be regulars. Instead of potato salad and beans we opted for Mac and cheese and greens. I'm a little disappointed. I originally went to Bludsos but after seeing there was a long wait, I decided to find something new, I ventured off to this place based on some reviews. This was my first time here. My boyfriend and I were sharing, so we were deciding for a two meat combo not knowing if it was enough I asked the guy and he said yes but with uncertainty. So we decided to order a three meat combo with two sides. They ran out of Mac and cheese and potato salad so we opted for baked beans and greens. I also ordered a small side of banana pudding. I understand it was near closing so running out of food was no problem. When I picked up my order, I asked the guy was there bbq sauce on the food and he said yes it is. So when I get home I realize there was no bbq sauce. So I had to go in the cabinet and put my Stubbs bbq sauce on it which is not the same. The meat is very tender and good, I must admit. However after opening the greens, I realize they taste like glory canned greens, really salty and very overcooked. The baked beans taste like bush beans with bbq sauce. The banana pudding was very mushy, no wafers or bananas, just banana flavored pudding. Next time I'll just wait around for Bludsos. Maybe if you dine here double check your food. Being from South Carolina and traveling all over the South, I know what good BBQ is. I've been several places outside of the South, suggested by others, but they couldn't compare to what I could get back home. Yes, even Phil's in SD was sub par (read my review - 1 star). The BBQ Pit in Seattle was decent, but Robert Earl's is the best I've had in a long time. Got the ribs w/ sauce on the side, because I wanted to taste the rib itself. Sauce didn't touch the ribs, didn't need to. Not too mushy, a nice firm texture, but not chewy. The balance of seasonings and smoke were excellent. I'd like to see a couple more ribs in the basket, but other than that, this place is spot on. Don't go expecting a fast meal, everything is made low and slow, the REAL way. Yes, if you haven't been to the South, the media and entertainment industry don't represent it well. To anyone who loves low and slow ABBQ, you have to give this place a try; ABBQ is American BBQ. The inside is really quaint and cozy. There were old wooden toy wagons nailed to the walls with cowboy decorations around; it was really nice and inviting. I ordered the beef brisket lunch combo. The portions is kind of on the small side but it makes up with that in BBQ goodness. You can see the smoke rings around the sides of the brisket and I was able to taste the smokey flavor of the que. The mac and cheese, which is 50 cents extra compared to the other sides, was really good. I am quite the eater so the portions only made me want more. The food isn't the only thing you should come here for. The people here were very friendly. They would welcome you as well as ask you if there was anything you need. Overall, the prices is well worth the quality of food you are getting and with people this inviting I am for sure coming back again. I WISH I WISH I WISH I didn't live 40 minutes from here. But the sad, sad truth is that I do, and it's 1 hour + with traffic. REGARDLESS, I am most DEFINITELY going to be coming back. My friend and I were in the Compton area, and we were craving some BBQ quite badly, so I Yelp'ed the nearest bbq restaurant, and this place popped up. And let me tell you, the reviews do not lie. This place is AMAZING. You can smell the food when you park your car around the building. The first thing I noticed was the service. Top notch! They seemed like they genuinely wanted to take good care of my friend and me, and it made the atmosphere very welcoming. Then there's the food. OMG THE FOOD. The spare ribs dinner made me cry. It is LEGIT good. THIS IS NOT the commercialized bs bbq that was produced in a factory then served with McDonald's bbq sauce. This is the real deal, and you can definitely taste it. ***I picked up my spare rib, and the entire thing fell apart 'cuz the meat was so tender. THAT'S A GOOD THING*** And oh, did I mention the service? In our entire dinner, a lady and a man dropped by at least 3 times to ask us if there was anything else we needed. I lived in Kansas City for a couple of years. While there all I wanted to do is come back home to Southern California. I knew that once I was back home the only thing I would miss is that KC BBQ. I also knew that So Cali didn't have good BBQ. Well I was wrong. Robert Earl is not only the best BBQ i've ever had in Cali but it ranks up there with KC. The Brisket is amazing.
