I was in a rare craving-red-meat mood and decided to try Roasty's today. I got the Boston 3-Way sandwich (onion roll, warm roast beef, kewpie mayo, American and BBQ sauce) and it was delicious. The meat was tender and not at all tough. The onion roll tasted fresh and was slightly buttery without being too oily. I swapped the American cheese that usually comes on it for Swiss. The employee at the counter was very friendly and was happy to give me free iced water despite the to go order. She mentioned that it was smart to order the barbecue sauce on the side because it sometimes makes the to go sandwiches, especially, soggy. Maybe in the future they could do this for all sandwiches that are prone to sogginess. Delicious late afternoon snack for me! read more

Roasty's has been a welcome stop in Portland on the way home since they opened! They do roast beef right every time! We have never had a bad experience, these folks are friendly and always excited for hooking a hungry soul up. As you approach you can smell the fresh roast beef cooking on the grill for the previous customer. When you enter you feel like you just stepped into a San Francisco delicatessen with a Philadelphia flair! Roasty's is the perfect kind of Portland weird...Get it while it's hot! First time in and had the Philly cheesesteak, coleslaw, and a reuben, but when we got home, they had given us someone else's roast beef sandwich with a ton of horseradish and coleslaw instead of the coleslaw. All 3 sandwiches were large and full of meat. We got it to go and by the time we got home, the sandwiches were a little soggy from the juices. Still was good though. The Philly cheesesteak was very good. A large was big enough to split between my teenage son and I. The roast beef was good, but I got a blast of horseradish up the nose after what I thought was a clump of Cole slaw, and I was done. My husband enjoyed his Reuben. Wish I could have tried just my order of Cole slaw. Maybe next time... I wished I had ordered the fries after seeing how thin and crispy they were. Waitstaff was busy, but sweet and helpful. 3 rd time here. Instead of the large north shore roast beef sandwich without mayo but lots of James river bbq sauce & cheese on a grilled onion roll. The sandwich is perfection plus. Sadly I decided to have a cheese steak with onions. When we got home we ate. My sandwich was horrible; soggy bread & the steak had zero taste, I threw out the sandwich; a complete disappointment. Really enjoyed Roasty's! Based on other questionable reviews, I wasn't sure what to expect, but we liked it a lot. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, and they gave us recommendations based on what we were craving. We went with the Boston-style roast beef, and it was terrific. They offer six different styles, and I want to return to try the rest as they looked really good. The string fries were a letdown, and I honestly do not understand the point of those -- it was my first time having them and definitely the last. We also ordered a side of cheese for the fries, which, in retrospect, didn't make much sense due to how thin they are. It's almost impossible to dip them. The atmosphere inside is okay. We were traveling and away from home, looking for something delicious for dinner. When traveling, we rely on reviews, pictures, and locals. I had just recently read Anthony Bourdain's description of a North Shore MA "three way" sandwich and then also found us not too far away from Roasty's (did the stars align?)... The really friendly guy at the counter greeted us and was happy to answer my questions as to his favorite items on the menu. We opted for a 3 way, a special sub made up of bbq beef, Swiss, onions, and slaw, and the beast fries. Too much food? ABSOLUTELY. Do we regret it? NO! We could have easily split one sandwich and fries and still walked away full. I ordered the large 3 way and only ate about half, the fries were too good to resist, and those really filled me up. The garlic sauce on the Beast fries will keep you taking one bite after another, after another. I love leftovers, so no regrets. This place is a gem. There were comfy tables inside, and a friendly atmosphere. They seem to slice the meat fresh once you order. It takes a little time, but so worth it. Staff is super friendly and engaging. Food was phenomenal. We will be back! Pro tip: keep the Boston in the foil when you pick it up - much less messy! read more

Went here the other night to try out this new roast beef spot. I love roast beef sandwiches and have had some very good ones from mass and wanted to see how they compare. Firstly the staff was very friendly and the restaurant itself has a nice vibe to it and it is very modern. They also have a selection of beer to choose from. We got the large three way roast beef sandwich. It was massive and packed with meat! And the taste was very good. The roast beef was good pretty well and the bun was delicious. We also got the shoe string fried which I loved and they give you plenty. Finally we also got a cheesesteak as well which we took home. The bread was a little soggy but overall it tasted pretty good. Meat was juicy and the cheese was melted throughout the entire sandwich. Overall this place is great for a late night feast or if you love roast beef sandwiches. There aren't many places you can get this stuff in Portland so I recommend checking it out! read more

Awesome! Had heard about this place since they opened several months ago. Went there for lunch with my buddy Connor and we had the traditional roast beef with the sauce and the barbecue sauce and the horseradish sauce and the sharp American cheese and I also got the coleslaw and we got the cheesy french fries and everything was beyond expectation! The food was great the coleslaw was The Best Coleslaw I've ever had the roast beef sandwich definitely on par with the best roast beef I've ever had! My standard is Philippe's French Dip in Los Angeles. This is a super high-bar, since Philippe's invented the French dip (or maybe it was Cole's PE Cafeteria, down the street-another benchmark.) I miss my home town of LA, I miss Philippe's/Cole's, so I had really high expectations of Roasty's, and they've mostly been met. My first visit wasn't awesome-they were still working out the bugs, and the service was slow, and the roast beef itself was very undercooked. They've changed that, and the past few times, the meat has been perfect. A special call-out to the bread, which is shipped in from Canada, I believe. Possibly the best sandwich roll I've ever had in Portland. Now, on to the pricing. It is, initially, shocking to see that a sandwich in Portland, Maine costs $20. And I get that it seems too high. But that's close to the going rate in town (i.e. Ramona's) and close to what you'll get in LA, where French dips go from about $13 for a small (smaller than Roasty's) to $23 for a large. I wish it was cheaper, because I'd go a lot more often. As it is, though, Roasty's is easily the best French dip I've ever had on the east coast. What about the other sandwich styles? We were in the area for an appointment and decided to grab a bite before heading home. The service was fast and they made some great recommendations. We got a wet dipped and a traditional roast beef with garlic shoestring fries, rice crispy square and blueberry soda. The bread was flavorful, the roast beef was delicious and the fries were the perfect accompaniment. Kind of a mess to eat but it was delectable so totally fine. This place was awesome! Fries are made to order fresh and you hear the oil sizzling in the kitchen. The sandwiches were absolutely fantastic! Just be sure to have some napkins because it's gonna get messy. Asked the cook for recommended extras to go with each sandwich and he pointed us in the right direction for a side of horseradish. The food here is great! But what really stands out is their customer service. We placed an order online and ordered something they were out of. The manager, Sean W., attempted to call me but I didn't answer since I didn't recognize the number. After figuring this out, I called him back and he explained the mix up, apologized and offered a substitute. I accepted, however, the Uber Eats driver rushed out and there was no time to correct the order. Sean called me back to explain what happened and then apologized again for the continued mix up. Needless to say, this wasn't Roasty's fault and I didn't hold them responsible. The food arrived and it was fantastic! Shortly after eating it, I got a text message from Sean, apologizing and he also gave me a gift card for future use. THIS is what separates Roasty's from other eateries in the area. Seemed to be a one man show but the service was quick and friendly in spite of it being a bit busy. We had an order of shoe string fries, they were good not greasy and fresh. We also got the Boston 3 way and beef on a wreck. Little too much sauce on the 3 way but it was very good and messy. The beef on a wreck was my favorite. The bun was very salty, might not be for everybody, but it was right for me and a good punch of horseradish. Really enjoyed this sandwich. Little pricey but it was a big sandwich. The food was delicious, and the main person making the sandwiches clearly put a lot of care into it. He was especially careful when preparing my sister's sandwich, as she has celiac disease, and we really appreciated his effort. While the main worker was great, the other employee didn't seem to know what was going on and messed up our order, even forgetting our drinks, which the main guy had to remind him about. Alas, everything was wildly over seasoned. The French Dip was beyond salty and the fries were inedible. The Boston 3-Way was passable, but the construction of the sandwich was all wrong (uneven meat distribution leading to whole bites of just roll). My experience at Roasty's was mid at best, but I'd rate my next 30 hours as explosive (I'll get to that later). When you walk in it has a 5 Guys vibe. My instinct told me to leave then, but I did not and that was a mistake. The Chicago Beef was somehow over seasoned and flavorless simultaneously. The bread was bland and tough. The fries were interesting and the only highlight of the meal. They are thin shoe string, which you don't see too much anymore. Points for that. The young woman running the grill was super friendly and seemed to genuinely care if you were having a good experience. Disengaged and slightly rude are a generous description of the young man at the counter (but I don't deduct points for that). The real problem began about 4 hours after I ate there and lasted the next 30 or so hours. I don't necessarily think I had food poisoning, but the quality of ingredients definitely didn't help. Based on the food's unimpressive nature I would say it's not worth the roll of the dice to see if it upsets your stomach as well. One thing that I would be remiss by not mentioning is the price. It is severely overpriced based on the quality of the product. I got a small sandwich and a fry and it was $23. You can get a gourmet lunch at many restaurants surrounding Roasty's for about the same price. End of the day HARD PASS, not a great experience read more

I was so excited to try this place, the vibes are great, staff was nice, the place was clean, and they're new so I'm hoping this review may draw attention to important things! First of all, my order was made wrong, I asked for a substitution but instead got both. There seemed to be a need among the staff to improve the workflow to reduce their own confusion and customer wait times. The other thing is that the beef in my sandwich was at room temp after my 2 min walk + 5 min drive home. And I dove into it before even taking my shoes and coat off! The color also seemed like it could have been cooked longer which probably would have helped the temp- but this seemed to be a product of the beef cut being really thick. I was also hoping for some more spice/flavor in my Chicago style Italian beef. The flavor was all in the juice rather than in the meat. Don't get me wrong, it was still a good sandwich, but it wasn't really a classic Italian beef to me and I'll order differently in the future! They did kill it on the wet bread. Yum read more
