After being seated respectfully in the dinning room I asked the host if she could inquire on the patio bar for open tables for happy hour. It was full, but to my suprise the waiter "Robert" volunteered to hold a table for us, on his own time. Wow! I was flattered at his generosity considering that never happens. (If you're new to RF you're learn quickly the happy hour is delightful, both for delicious food and cheap, but fantastic drinks) Our party of five enjoyed the flat bread, tortilla soup, beet salad, and date salad for starters. Accompanied by huckleberry margaritas and huckleberry lemonade. Everything was wonderful. My favorite was the date salad. Diner I had the duck which was the best duck I've had in my life. This place was wonderful. I'm from out of town and my friend and I was looking for a great place to eat before I head home the next. I stumbled into this restaurant as I was looking on Yelp. I read the reviews and a lot of people said great things about this place. So we decided to go. The food was amazing. I started my meal with the tortilla soup and was shocked about the presentation on the soup. It looked amazing and I enjoyed the flavor when I was eating it. Then I ordered a small salad. It's a salad. Nothing special. And last I had the half chicken. The chicken had a lot of flavor and a side of cornbread that came with it. Both items were very tasteful. The price was very reasonable. I thought it would be more because of the look inside the restaurant. It wasn't the case. Service was excellent as they took really care of me and my guest. When I come back to Phoenix, I'm definitely coming back here. read more

Had to wait in a line to inform the host that we had arrived (on time) for our dinner reservation for 4. No host in sight. Waited patiently in line while others cut in front of us to ask for their tables. I know that wasn't necessarily the restaurant's fault but if they had someone at the reception desk all of the time, it wouldn't have happened. All of our meals were not good. Even the salads were bland and tasteless. One of the steaks was so undercooked that it was still near frozen in the middle. Yes, it was ordered rare but it was not prepared well at all. Came to Roaring Fork for a friend's birthday with a group of 6 and the host staff was all very friendly upon arrival and departure. Our server was an older gentleman named Daryl and was pretty rude throughout our experience casting an awkward vibe at the table. We were sitting at a large round table waiting on others to join us. We told Daryl it would be one maybe two more that would be joining and he says "umm ok I don't know how all of you would fit." The table was plenty big yet he made it sound like such a crisis. Anyways he took our drink orders and I ordered the chocolate martini which was ok but probably could have used a garnish or a rim or something that makes it more of a specialty cocktail. Daryl returned to take our food orders after we had been waiting quite a while and asked him to. When he got to me I told him I had one order I would like to place to-go as well. After I ordered my first dish and began to order the to-go he cut me off and literally held his finger out to me to shush me. He finishes taking the other two orders and then asks me what I want to-go? Not sure why it would have been a problem for me to order when it was my turn. The food came out and it was amazing per usual. The broth for the mussels was really good. The restaurant brought out a little fudge cake for the birthday girl after the meal which was super rich and delicious. We told the server we wanted our checks separate and he brought them out no problem. I received mine and of course he forgot the to-go order. I said "I don't see the fish tacos on here" to which he replied "nope." After a few seconds of silence he realized, apologized, and went to ring them in. One girl at the table asked for the birthday girl's check as well as hers and he said "well now you're confusing me, so you guys DON'T want all separate checks then??" Literally all he had to do was hand her both receipts and I'm sure he knew that.. perhaps just wanted to cap the night off with more attitude. I've been coming to the roaring Fork for 20 years now and bring friends when they come to town. Actually they asked to come here. This time was a huge disappointment. We got the Big Ass burger; meat was over cooked and buns were stale. So three of us didn't eat much of the burger. We nicely told the water but did nothing. Tortilla soup was different somehow; not as good as previous, just a thick gravy with a few pieces of chicken. French fries seemed overcooked; not burnt but crispy throughout, no potato texture. The evening started off with a glass of Champaign and two glasses of sparkling water. Matt our waiter was busy, while still attentive. We shared the mixed green salad. It was fresh but a bit bland. It only had a few walnuts and maybe two cranberries. My girl had the muscles which were in a nice tomato sauce and were quite fresh. The duck was also prepared well at med-rare. Throughout the night the service was good. The nice ending to the being was the warm pecan pie. The slide of pie was very deep and despite not being hat hungry we both ending up eating it all. Plus, it balanced out the taste of the nuts with a subtle sweetness. Overall, the evening was relaxing and as always we enjoy eating here when we're in town. It's a great staple that has great food. Also, while leaving 2-3 staff said "have a great night" which always adds a nice positive touch to an evening. read more

Those of you who've watched Check Please Arizona on Phoenix's local PBS Station (KAET-8), probably remember the show's original host Robert McGrath. The soft talking food loving Texan ran the show for multiple seasons, inviting guests of all different backgrounds onto the show to share their favorite restaurants & love of food in general. McGrath's rise to celebrity in the valley is well deserved, though perhaps largely unknown. He's one of a select few valley chefs to have received the prestigious James Beard award (Nobuo Fukoda & Chris Bianco being the others). Originally a chef in his native Texas, McGrath eventually made his way to the valley first as head chef at the Phoenician. Then in 1997, he opened Roaring Fork. It was his work here that earned McGrath his coveted Beard award in 2001. McGrath has long since handed over the business, but I'd never set foot in this two decade old restaurant. I have no way of knowing whether the restaurant or menu has stayed true to McGrath's formula now that new owners are in place, but for Arizona Restaurant Week it was as good an opportunity as any to find out just how good it was. Roaring Fork can be found on the southwest corner of Scottsdale and Chaparral Roads. You'll find the restaurant on the ground floor of the six story office building on that corner. The interior of the restaurant is both rugged & elegant with a mix of high country touches like deer antler chandeliers & stone walls along with more formal white table cloths & beautiful cherry wood floors. I arrived right after they opened for dinner at 4pm on a Tuesday & sat at the bar, expecting a fairly light crowd for the evening. By 5pm, the place was jammed full of more than 100 people & there were about 10 waiting for a table in the lobby. Not sure if this is the Restaurant Week crowd or a normal night, but whoa. The Restaurant Week menu this go around offered up a three course meal & a non alcoholic drink for $44. Based on the prices I saw on their everyday menu, Roaring Fork was most definitely offering up a discount versus their normal business hours. I was offered a non-alcoholic drink, but instead opted for their happy hour house margarita. The usual suspects with this one: tequila, triple sec, & lime juice (I got mine on the rocks with salt). Delicious, refreshing margarita & impressively strong. I probably could've handled one more but after that I wouldn't have been able to drive. I'd read all the buzz about their tortilla soup so I got that for my appetizer. Here they give you a bowl with pulled rotisserie chicken, guacamole, & string tortilla chips & then the waiter pours in the broth using a second bowl. Hands down the best tortilla soup I've ever had. Admittedly I never thought to put avocado in my tortilla soup, but I'll be damn sure to do that from now on. Though I doubt I could ever replicate the broth this soup uses. Man, that was good. The entree selection was tough as I was torn between a steak and duck. As I can get a good steak almost anywhere, I took a gamble on their Sugar Cured Duck Breast entree. The duck breast is cooked to a medium rare & sliced up for you on a bed of brussel sprouts, a sour cherry mustard glaze, & onion jam (which I honestly didn't know was a thing). It also comes with a side of green chile macaroni & cheese with breadcrumbs. I loved the mac & cheese & all the sauces that went with the duck were great. Honestly though, I wasn't in love with the duck itself. The meat was cooked fine & the sauces definitely flavored the meat well, but I just couldn't get into the texture of the duck. I've had duck confit before which is byfar my favorite way to eat duck, so maybe I should just stick with that. Lastly, dessert time & in this case that meant Pecan Pie. Roaring Fork's Pecan Pie dessert is actually a chocolate & toffee pecan pie with whipped cream & a brown butter gelato on the side. The gelato was perfect, the pecan pie was...okay. Little Miss BBQ actually serves the best pecan pie I've ever had so Roaring Fork's effort to top that was going to be a tall order. Roaring Fork's version was admirable, but a little on the dry side for me. Total cost for the restaurant week menu, plus the drink, tax & tip came to about $65. For context, the same items I got tonight would've set me back about $80. Its an even better deal during Restaurant Week if you order their New York Delmonico or Filet Mignon steaks, which are discounted by almost 50%. Overall though, a good meal. Some parts were better than others, but I was pretty happy with my first run here. Is it James Beard worthy? No (at least not now that McGrath is no longer in the kitchen). Certainly not when compared to Kevin Binkley, who's been a Beard runner up multiple times and is long overdue. Still, there's a lot here Robert McGrath & his followers can still be proud of. I'm going to give a benefit of the doubt 4 stars here as I've only been once and it was with a large team of people who had traveled to Scottsdale for a business meeting so, the meal was one of those here's your salad, pick from these three entrees and these two desserts kind of deals. The salad non-choice was some fresh greens with what was a tasty vinaigrette that unfortunately was in short supply. Entree choices were organic rotisserie chicken, grilled salmon and a Dr. Pepper beef short rib with tomato jam.. I went with the short rib and found it both good and disappointing. The good was the fall off the bone quality of the meat itself plus the flavor of the meat and the less good was that it was kind of small, and too fatty. Judging from the conversations around the table, sounds like the chicken was the way to go. Dessert was an ancho-chocolate torte that was really pretty good and I'm not even really a sweets kind of guy. Walking to the banquet room we were in, I got to see some orders coming out to other tables and I saw some things that looked really good, including a delicious looking thick steak with some compound butter melting on top. I would have ordered that in a heartbeat had it been one of our choices. Service for the team meal seemed to be kind of slow with longer than should have been periods in between each course. read more

Good happy hour. We ordered almost all the dishes on the appetizer menu and they were great. Notably, the queso con puerco is delicious! I also like the pork wings. Chicken on flat bread is good, as is guacamole. You cannot beat $5 drinks - several good spirit drinks and wine, too. I had two mojitos and they were fine. We sat on the patio and it was very pleasant. The bill for two drinks and two appetizers was $28 before tip. I recommend this happy hour. read more

I made a 7:30 reservation last night for dinner; I was going with my parents and a coupe friends all who were in from out of town. In the notes I put that I wanted a table bc my mom has trouble getting in and out of the table. When we arrived they went to sit us in a booth and when we said we could not sit there they offered us the outside patio- which was OK but not the same experience. We walked to the table and it took about 15 minutes for them to find the right table cloth and sit us down and we were all just standing there. About 3-4 different people came to the table with water and saying our server will be right with us. I asked about vegan options at that time and he said he'd look into it and come back. Our server came to the table with wrong information on the vegan options and could not really answer questions on the options. The manager came over to tell me they could not make me a potato without butter and to call ahead and they can accommodate me. I ordered the brussels, steak mushroom and the twice backed potato so I could take off the buttered mashed. I ended up just eating the potato skin and brusselsprouts bc the mushrooms ended up being button mushrooms. We were asked a few times if we needed anything but never asked how our meal was. It took probably 30 minutes to be sat and get our order placed but after that the food did come out quick. I have been here in the past and had a much better experience but I've always sat in the bar. So vegans- you may want to suggestion another restaurant. Also when making accommodations to the table, I would suggest calling as well. The table did say the duck and fish were good but would not recommend the chicken. read more

Interesting business office complex location, also near the Embassy Suites where we were staying. Three of us work colleagues came here for dinner on a Thursday night. It was busy, so without a reservation, we had to sit at the bar, which was fine with us. Amazing that they were so busy on a Thursday night on the 2nd week of November. The waitress said it was even busier the night before! She mentioned they have been around for over 20 years and have a pretty good following. It was restaurant week, so they had a prix fixe special. We all had a mixed green salad starter (good) and a bacon-wrapped filet mignon (very good) and a creme brulee for dessert. The filet was well-prepared and very tasty/juicy. If I came back, I would like to try the sea bass. The interior is very nice, lots of stone and wood. The service was very friendly and helpful. Okay wine list. In looking for a local restaurant close to home to support during Arizona Restaurant Week after sorting through all the options decided on Roaring Fork. Selected a Cesar salad as my appetizer which was large enough I saved 1/2 for lunch the next day, excellent dressing. For an entre, I had the Del Monico which was generous cut of top-notch rib eye grilled to a perfect medium-rare having a subtle but noticeable wood smoke flavor. The steak was served with fresh mashed potatoes and asparagus, the asparagus was the only item not up to par, they appeared to have been batch cooked and lost their color and crispness. For dessert, I had the Cream Brulee, and while I'm not a desert / or fan of sugar I could have consumed an additional order, the Brulee was creamy and the caramelized top was nice and crisp. read more

Luckily I called before and was able to get my reservation in and we were accommodated. We were a large group and everything was delicious. It used to be available at the bar only, but is now included on the regular menu. It's a HUGE burger. We had heard the food here was good so we we tried this place last night for restaurant week. It was 44 each. I had a date and arugula salad and the blackened salmon with shrimp, spinach and quinoa and each of us ordered 1 glass of wine. Husband had a cesar and the Delmonico streak with mashed potatoes and asparagus. The arugula salad was fresh and the salmon dish was good. I really liked that they put a lot of sautéed spinach under the fish. It was a very large portion after the bread and salad and I could not finish it. The service was good. I don't know the name of our server although he did introduce himself. He said he had been there for 6 years and was attentive and accommodating. My husband enjoyed his salad, steak and potatoes but the asparagus was grilled and it tasted way too smokey like it had been smoked or something and was bitter. The steak was listed as a 16 oz Delmonico which means a thick cut ribeye, but it looked pretty skinny. The dessert choice was pecan pie or cream brûlée. Deserts were fine enough but just boring choices. They could have put their huckleberry cheesecake on there. Everyone has had pecan pie and crème brûlée but I can't say I've ever had huckleberry cheesecake. The pie was more like a pecan square cooked on a crust in a cookie sheet. It was served with some delicious ice cream and squirt whipped cream from a can. Over all the restaurant was good if you want a decent meal, but the vibe and decor reminded me of a Texas longhorn steakhouse. Very dark inside with a lot of browns. Also the bathroom was pretty shabby. Heard they have a good happy hour though if you are looking for a deal. We got there at 6 and the bar and all of he bar tables were still packed. On a Tuesday. What a fantastic dinner!! To begin, our waiter (Chase) did a great job serving us and assuring us we made a great selection of dishes. He was attentive without being intrusive. Our order was as follows: - Complimentary Bread Basket - comes with rolls and mini corn bread muffins... Very tasty actually. Comes with a plate of 2 types of butter which I confused for cheese and pâté (the butter was cut in wedges... My bad) - Green Chili Pork with Tortillas (appetizer) - delicious and full of flavor. Generous portion. Would order again in a heart beat. It is topped with melted cheese. My photo does it no justice. - Half Roast Chicken (entree) - comes with really tasty corn bread stuffing and veggies. Chicken was cooked very well. Not dry at all. Only was to make it better would be to find a way to improve the chicken skin flavor which was good, but not fantastic. - Green Chili Mac 'n Cheese - good lord this was good. It has some crunchies on top which just pull it all together. Creamy cheese, a little green chili spice, perfect pasta with a delicious crunch for texture. Wow, the summer happy hour here is amazing! We heard a ton of great things about roaring fork so we definitely wanted to try it out. We got there around 6PM and just had to wait a minute or two before someone at the bar area got up and left. Our server was excellent and very kind to us! I highly recommend the queso and chips - I'm originally from Texas so I must say this is an awesome place to get good queso! My husband had the fish tacos and I had the BBQ brisket sliders. Both were phenomenal and we would get them again! Drinks: I had the huckleberry marg- YUM!! and mojito- good but not great!
