She was running around and didn't get a chance to slow down at all because the restaurant was super busy with Taste of Chicago weekend. Just like a Ralph Lauren Polo shirt: more about the logo and paneling in the store than any difference versus the Target version. Listen, it's a lovely setting, filled with dressed-up tourists and ladies of a certain age. The prices, though, are double to triple what the same dish is at an actual restaurant. The burgers (beef and turkey) are an embarrassment. Frozen patties on ordinary buns for $25-$29. Cha-Ching. The hand-cut fries are good, but a side will cost $10. Cha-Ching. Escargot are good, crab cake special is good, but for $35 at lunch. Cha-Ching. Service is excellent, but it should be considering tips are high based on the prices for food. RL is a quaint and lovely place to have a business lunch, a meal with friends, or even bring the family. We came in after the Seuss exhibit across the way and we're lucky to get a table for an early lunch. My girls loved the atmosphere and the food and were delighted at having to ride an elevator to use the rest room! I had just finished shoping at 900 Michigan Ave and was feeling a light urge to snack in an effort to duck out of an unexpected snow storm. Decided to take my chances at RL since it's a workday (I got off early) and snag a spot in the bar area. It worked like a charm!! Ahhhhh. I was promptly greeted, a real menu was handed to me and then was asked if I wanted anything to drink. I had a glass of chardonnay (not pictured here) then decided on the hot lobster rolls appetizer and a side of hand cut fries. A white linen napkin was placed in front of me like a little table cloth and a hot towel with fresh lemon on a plate was handed to me. Gosh, I know it sounds fancy but let me just say how much it made me smile!! My hands were cold and and that hot towel and lemon squeeze just got me feeling like a whole fresh person again. The fella who greeted me was very proper in his manerisms. About mid-way through my meal his shift was ending and he professionally introduced me to the bubbly girl who took over table service. Both were excellent!! There was never a lack of attentiveness to making sure I had everything I needed in front of me. The ambiance is very tradional dark cheery woods, dimly lit lighting and of course Ralph Lauren dinnerware & decor. Yes a bit old school yuppie but also the perfect place to enjoy a superb snack. The lobster itself was wonderful. The portion was smaller than I expected even as an appetizer for $36. However I'd still order it again the next time I stop in. Decided to warm up with a cupuccino before going out to brave the cold outside again. I kinda wished I didn't. Let's just say it was watery and underwhelming. Coffee just isn't their specialty. RL is a classic Chicago restaurant. Old school elegance that is relaxed and fancy at the same time. Over the past decades (seriously can't believe I haven't written a review yet!) I've met girlfriends for an indulgent Wednesday dinner. I've had date nights with hubby here. I've even celebrated a birthday with my teens here. RL is one of those places that never gets old and remains a staple as you celebrate life. While you're there - take the time to really look around and take in the amazing artwork collection throughout. The bar is crazy small - so unless you're waiting for a table, better to just get a reservation for dinner and spoil yourself. While we're there - our personal favorite is the get the petite filets. The know how to do them here. That with the pomme frites and you're good to go! An outstanding wine selection and exquisite desserts make the meal. read more

I have been here 3-4 times (both with large and smaller groups) in the past few months and the word that comes to mind is consistency. The service is and food are outstanding. My favorite foods so far has been the burger, calamari, dover sole, and pigs in a blanket. The food comes out quickly but the meal felt well paced and I never felt rushed. Some of the offerings are on the pricer side but there is a good spread in terms of prices depending on what you want to spend. I never have had room for dessert but if it's anything like the food, I'm sure it's delicious. Downsides: Valet is only offered for dinner and parking in the area can be pricey/tricky. There are no windows in the main dining area. There is not much of a waiting area (can lead to awkwardly standing by people eating in the bar area). The restrooms are on another level and you have to take an elevator to get there. I'd definitely come here if you are visiting from out of town, want a nice lunch or are celebrating a special occasion. read more

Love the feel, vibe of RL restaurant which really envelopes you when you step into the restaurant. Everything is impeccable with great attention to detail on every experience. Service is spot on as you would expect and so was the food. Great bread basket with parmesan crisps. I had the RL Burger and not only was it perfectly cooked, but it was up there on one of the best tasting burgers I've had. Well seasoned, moist and perfect accompaniments. Fries were also perfectly cooked, twice fried I'm sure, crispy and they had truffle fries today so of course I did that. What a treat for lunch in a beautifully appointed restaurant. I was robbed while dining in the lounge area at RL on December 7th. Someone had taken my purse with everything in it from my chair while we were having dinner. The manager we spoke to was very dismissive and rude to my husband and I. We wanted to see if we could see the security tapes to see who took the bag but they refused to help us. They basically shoved us out the door because they didn't want to deal with the situation. I am completely disgusted by the way we were spoken to and treated that evening. I also had a family member call to try to help and he hung up on her. Extremely unprofessional and cruel to treat customers. If you are dining here guard your belongings as there are thieves in the restaurant. read more

Met up with some friends for brunch. I live on the corner from here. I pass by all the time I just never eaten here. Well today was the day. I was greeted promptly and escorted to my table. I didn't feel squeezed into my table nor did I feel rushed while eating. The ambiance was very enchanting. My waiter was very accommodating and didn't lapse in service. They had a pretty good variety on the menu. I had the calamari and rock shrimp with fries and pecan pie. Everything was delicious. My drink was pretty good too I just do not recall the name. I've been wanting to go back for a while and stopped in for dinner last week to eat on the patio. Gorgeous setting - and extremely casual there. I love that they added the shrubbery barrier - it truly feels like you're not in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Michigan Avenue. We had several glasses of their Routestock Pinot Noir - absolutely delicious Pinot and have already started looking for it in the stores! We started with the Pigs in the Blanket - and loved it and the spicy mustard. For entrees - we got the the special Scallops, Veal Milanese, and sauteed garlic spinach. Each was really good. The veal was very large and I was able to take half of it home with me for lunch the next day. Great service - beautiful setting - and good food/drinks. What more can you ask for? read more

Very nice ambience. Staff was very friendly. I made reservations almost a month ago for our anniversary. The table for two they seated us at was right off the kitchen and was so tight, we thought perhaps they squeezed the table in last minute. I was really disappointed by that especially when I saw other parties of two sitting at a nice booth or larger table. I wouldn't have minded if I had made the reservations last minute or I had simply walked in. I could have celebrated at another establishment just as nice and have been given the courtesy of a decent table. That being said, our server was very professional. The calamari & rock shrimp we ordered as an appetizer was mediocre. The Caesar salad, strip steak, Chilean sea bass and mashed potatoes were very good . The waiter brought a small brownie with a candle on a plate where they had drizzled happy anniversary which was sweet. We also ordered the key lime pie which was excellent. I am giving the restaurant 3 stars because the table they set up for us knowing it was a special occasion was ridiculous. If I'm going to spend $300 on dinner, I should at least have a comfortable space to enjoy it in. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago! It is pricey but the classic preppy ambiance, amazing food, and cute venue in on Michigan ave make it worth it. We had the lobster rolls with fries and garlic aioli and wow this was the most stuffed, tasty lobster roll I've maybe ever had and the portion size was huge. Definitely worth $40 and they also give you a variety of breads with butter to start. Service was phenomenal. Want to try their cocktails and lobster bisque next time! read more

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was a lovely experience. 5 stars goes to the incredible food, attentive service, and cool ambiance that made me feel like I was in an English library in the 90s. The food has classic American staples, yet it is all done SO well. We ordered lobster bisque, pigs in a blanket, and chopped vegetable salad to start. I loveee lobster bisque and this one hit the spot with perfectly balancing the savory, salty, and seafood flavors. We celebrated our 46th wedding anniversary tonight at RL. Although we've been there many times, tonight was a little disappointing. We had reserved a table in the patio but it was very chilly and the hostess said there were no tables inside. We went early at 6:30 and there were plenty of tables, but we sat outside. I ordered a $39 glass of champagne but it was served in a wine glass and lost its bubbles quickly. Sad. Dinner was excellent though and our waiter was very good. We then ordered a dessert which came on a plate decorated with "happy anniversary" but you'd think they could comp the dessert? I had the Dover sole which is quite expensive so we weren't dining on the cheap. We go to this restaurant frequently so it was a little disappointing not to have a more satisfying evening. read more

I was visiting Chicago and we like to come to RL whenever we are in town. I just absolutely love this place. The decor of the restaurant is classic, elegant, cozy, and inviting. Love the pictures hanging on the wall and the classic and comfortable booth seating. I just wanted to hang out in the dining room, eat, talk, and people-watch. The service was phenomenal. I loved how the waiters are all dressed up in a classic white dress shirt with a tie. Our waiter was very polite, attentive, honest, and pleasant. I felt pampered. The food was so delightful and appetizing. Crispy Walleye Pike is a must to order. I am drooling as I think about the pike dish. Their burger is another amazing and solid dish to order. Located on Michigan Ave and tourist favorite - stunning place with great decoration (vintage and exactly what you would expect a restaurant . They do a delicious complimentary pastries basket before brunch/lunch time of fresh baked goods and house-made jam (so delicious!) Standout dishes: cobb salad (random but hands down one of my favorite cobb salad in the city), fries (skinny and crispy just like I like it), burger (a classic), and lobster rolls (my favorite). Amazing service - the waiters are always a delight to chat with especially if you want stories about celebrity guests. RL Restaurant is definitely a touristy restaurant. You're mostly going for the aesthetic rather than the food. The decor, of course, is stunning and everything that you would expect a Ralph Lauren restaurant to look like. I loved all the dish ware that had the RL logo on them. We got many dishes that were decent, but overpriced as you would expect. I would say go once for the vibes. If you don't care about aesthetics and care more about food, then I would skip this. read more
