Ate here for lunch on a recommendation from a coworker while I was in town. Typical Texas BBQ joint atmosphere, quaint with a hint of BBQ smoke lingering in the air. The Food: WOW, absolutely amazing Texas style BBQ. I had the 2 meat plate, brisket and sausage with 2 sides, fries and beans. The portion size was Texas sized and this meal ended up being lunch and dinner. The brisket was Smokey and moist, the sausage had an excellent flavor with a good crisp on the skin. Fries are Fries, kinda hard to mess that up, and the beans were. The staff were friendly and smiling the entire time. They answered all of my questions and actually engaged us while we were there. 3/13/2026 our neighbor mention this place for good fried chicken. So my review is only for our FRIED chicken dinner and not the bbq. I will update my review as soon as we try their BBQ. I was greeted as soon as I walked in the guy behind the counter helped me with my choices. I was looking for either 2 or 4 piece chicken tender meals since there are two of us for dinner. As far as FRIED chicken their only two options (excluding BBQ) are 3 or 5 piece tenders or a bundle of wings w/tots or fries. I opted for the 5 with tots so we both could have at least 2 tenders each. As I waited I noticed the restaurant was pretty clean, the drive thru was busy and looks like they were also getting a catering order ready for delivery. My wait wasn't that long perhaps 5-7 minutes as the chicken is cooked fresh when ordered. None of that precooked crap under a heat lamp here. We really liked our chicken tender dinner w/tots and the assorted dipping sauces on the side. Nice portion size enough for 2 people for sure. No pics to post as I forgot my camera but will definitely post pics on our next BBQ mission. Arrived at 11 am at the door opening and they were packing up a catering order for a hundred. Good sign. The restaurant is no-frills. Four walls and stuff. You know stuff. Eight or ten tables with ordering done at the counter. Simple meat plates and by-the-pound ordering. Ribs, brisket, and sausage are your big boys. I know they had a few more types of meat, but I just don't remember. I ordered two meat combos with sides. Ribs and brisket with sides. Ribs and sausage with sides. There was more food than a couple of humans can eat. The to-go containers were packed. Heavy in weight with delicious food. Enough food for four. Ribs a home run. Brisket was delicious. The sausage was good. Sides, very standard but good; potato salad, mac n cheese. You can't go wrong if you are in the area and want some delicious cue. There is solid BBQ Magic here. Our Kitchen Cabinet Crew of two guys have almost finished the Kitchen. Most of the Cabinets are in except for the doors and the one below the sink that's in the corner. We knew it would not be done on Friday and we did plan to go out to eat Dinner - but didn't know where. I came up with a plan (sometimes I astonish myself). Informed my Lovely Wife that why not go out to RJ BBQ and give them a try. My Wife was busy around the house while the crew worked in the Kitchen and I ran a couple of errands preparing for the temporary sink that we maybe able to use early next week. The crew left around 4:30pm or so and we readied for RJ - and the Vette-Jet is waiting to go. When we walked in we were greeted by Edith behind the counter where you order. We informed her that it's our first time here and we need to look at the menu board. She then said that they are out of Brisket due to a lot of Catering they did today and also a Very Large Lunch Crowd. Her and another worker suggested the Three-Meat-Combo that comes with two sides and there is enough food on there for two people. So, that's what we went with. Chose the Pulled Pork, Sausage & Ribs. The Two sides chosen are Potato Salad and Beans - comes with 2-slices of bread and RJ's BBQ Sauce. We also ordered two drinks, Diet Dr Pepper and Diet Coke. We took a table while we waited for our food and in just a couple minutes it was ready. Picked it up at the counter with plastic ware and a plate - and this container is really heavy. Opened it up at the table and now we know why it's Heavy. There is a lot of meat in there with Three Mighty Big Ribs covering the Pulled Pork that's spread all across the large portion of the container - with sliced Sausage along the side. The Potato Salad is topped with some Pickles and sliced White Onion while the Beans take up the other side - and there is a lot of them. My Wife took the plate and some of each item while I ate from the container. These Ribs are Big and they do have good flavor, especially with the RJs BBQ Sauce - that stuff is really tasty. We both Love the Pulled Pork - it's Moist, Very Tender and loaded with flavor. I layered a lot of Pulled Pork on a slice of bread, then the BBQ Sauce and it was Awesomelylicious - RJ really has good Pulled Pork. The Sausage is also one of our favorites. It's Very Flavorful and Tender with no toughness anywhere like some places. This is some Great Tasting Perfect-Potato Salad, especially with some Pickles & Onion. The Beans have just the right amount of Spiciness in them and they are Beany-Meaty - love the flavor. RJ BBQ is a Big Hit with us and we are coming back for some of that Brisket - but not late in the day. That's just taking a chance of them running out. RJ's is open for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner for most days of the week - closing early on Saturday & Sunday at 5pm - but you can still come for an early Dinner. One of the major bbq players in this town and I see why. Dang good BBQ across the board of their simple basic menu of goods. Everything we had was amazing. Service was fast just before the normal 6pm dinner rush started coming in and it came strong! We got lucky coming in at 5. Beat the masses. The chicken impressed me most with it's super smokey but moist outcome. The brisket was a close 2nd place being flavorful and tender. Ribs we're not be overlooked either. Not a big sausage guy so those just never impress me much anywhere. Potato salad, coleslaw and beans all legit sides. The smokey tangy BBQ sauce is solid as well. 4.5 Stars! Based on the type of place it is...diner-like. Hubby & I both had the Brisket platter. His with beans and fries, mine with fried okra and potato salad. We split a peach cobbler because they had no banana pudding. Servings of all were generous. Be sure to ask for extra sauce. 1) BBQ Sauce--this is Super important, the Most important ingredient IMHO. I'm 100% Texan, NOT Southern. RJ's BBQ Sauce walks a very fine line between the rangy vinegar based Texas BBQ and the Sweet Memphis style Sauce. It's both. (I'd like it better without the sweet but I could eat it and not be umhappy). 2) The Brisket-- just the way Brisket ought to be. Enough smoke flavor. AND a Generous serving (in my picture I ate a slice before I remembered trouble snap it). 3) The Sides - Pinto beans were just good ol' plain beans. They had a bit of cumin but not a lot. Crinkle fries really cannot go wrong on these. Potato salad was, IMHO, annhh. Mayonnaise, a bit of mustard for color and potatoes. I saw what seemed to be bits of pickles but didn't taste -em. Luckily hubby gave me his onion. Peach Cobbler was very Cinnomon-y. I'm not crazy about that but Hubby was. Darn good Cobbler. One surprise was the Lemonade Tea. Yummy, on the lemony side. I was so disappointed when we saw the building (we would not have stopped if we had not read the reviews ) and then we went in and they said they were sold out of brisket and chicken. (It was 1 hour before close ). I do not normally dig in the swine so I was strained they only had pork ribs and pulled pork bruh let me tell you now ... this food was delicious ! The sauce was so good. I do not like my sauce sweet and my hubs does. It was not sweet and he loved it. The beans had a rich gravy and the were spiced so good. I've passed this place many times before while being on the road to midland and often wanted to stop. This time, I did on the way back. Two stars for having a drive-thru!! Especially one that moved without a long wait. Since it was my first time here, I tried pretty much everything. Brisket, sausage, ribs, and chicken. Unfortunately this style of barbecue isn't my fave. I'm used to the central Texas standard of salt n pepper so this spice rub was challenging. It seemed like they used chili powder. Whatever it is, I'm not a fan. It was fresh though and the sauce tasted like it had mustard in it. That was pretty good. The brisket was flavorless and dry, same with the ribs. The chicken was promising but needs more seating. The sausage is the only thing I ate. It was pretty spicy and not the kind of homemade sausage I'd prefer, but I ate it. This was THE ABSOLUTE WORST barbecue I've ever had. There was so much salt in my chopped brisket sandwich, that I couldn't even finish it. They give you a tiny amount of potato salad and barbecue sauce that slams your throat shut and makes you gag. That was not worth the $12.95. We ordered the three meat plate (brisket, chicken and sausage) and the plate was well served. They have a saying in the restaurant which I believe rings true. Wow! i keep sniffing the smoke on my fingers after chowing down on 1/2 a sausage sandwich and 1/2 a brisket sandwich (my beloved ate the other 1/2s), properly dressed with hamburger pickle slices, thick sliced onions, pickled jalapeños and NO sauce. The sandwiches are big honking buns heartily stuffed with meat. I loved how the sausage was cut in half and then each half sliced lengthwise to give you maximum sausage-to-bun coverage - even then the bun can barely contain it. The sausage skin was snappy and the porky sausage was smoky and not the least bit fatty. The thick slices of brisket, beautiful smoke ring, perfectly distributed on the sandwich like someone really wanted you to enjoy your food. This particular sandwich was from a lean cut, so it is a bit drier than the fattier end, but oh, so good! You can really taste BEEF in this brisket. The sauce was very nice -- i like a variety of sauce styles and this one was hard to categorize... there was a touch of sweet, a bit of vinegar, a hint of... well, almost tasted like powdered beef jerky. It is not a super thick sauce but clings perfectly to the meat. Use just a little, like a condiment, and it complements the meat rather than drowning it (which you won't want to do). We were there early for lunch on a Wednesday and ate in. Charles and JoAnna were wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome. If you call in your order, you can just drive up to the drive through window and pick it up. Brisket, chicken, sausage, ribs. Platter or sandwich (platter comes with beans and potato salad; sandwich with pickles and onion, jalapeño if you ask for it). Deserts are also available, but you'll have to save it for later because you will be full! I'm grateful they are down the street from my veterinarian; as often as my klutz dog has me at the vet, i can always make sure to schedule my appointments around lunch time!! I ordered online since it was easier for me, I selected to pick up between 11:35am-11:45am; I placed the order at 10:59am. Well I got an update at 11:05am that the order would be done at 11:15am-11:20am, then at 11:25am I got a text saying the order was complete. I was unable to call the restaurant due to the environment I was in, when I placed the order. Well I got there between 11:40am-11:45am, ten-fifth teen minutes later is when I actually started eating the food with my boyfriend; it was cold, didn't even look like they owned a heater inside their place. I order the 3 meat combo, Ribs, Chicken, Sausage & potato salad as the side. The meat just tasted like smoke, didn't have its own unique flavor; came with a side of bbq sauce, which you definitely needed to actually enjoy the food. My husband and I dined at RJ Bar-B-Que for a lunch meal which was tasty, but I have had better... The older couple (the owners presumably) that greeted us were very kind and didn't seem impatient as we took our time browse the menu. I settled on a chicken sandwich and was a little shocked when I opened my styrofoam container. Inside, between two very thin slices of bread was a bone-in chicken!!! I guess I could have been "specific" but I was imagining a pulled chicken sandwich! Of course, the older lady leaning on the counter was watching me and asked the "obvious" question from across the dining room: "Is everything all right with ya'll's food?". I turned around slightly so that she could see that I was not given any utensils to eat this "chicken sandwich" (and I repeat with bones). The restaurant is very small, so the gentleman who made the sandwich in the back ran out to provide me a plastic fork and knife. As he looked down admiringly at his handiwork I wanted to ask "Where is Chef Gordon Ramsay when you need him?????!!!" I'm sorry but I wasn't in the mood to use a fork and knife on my sandwich. Hungry as I was--being lunchtime and all--, I started to pull at the meat of the chicken. It was smoked and smelled great, but I needed BBQ sauce to add some moistness. The potato salad was "decent", but as a true GRITS Girl (Girls Raised in the South), my tastebuds reminded me that I had tasted better -- needed a pinch of salt and perhaps a grinder twist or two of black pepper). The highlight of the meal was the PEACH COBBLER that was made fresh that morning. I truly enjoyed that mini morsel and would go back just for that!! Additionally, a nice older couple paid for our meal (as my husband was in uniform and the kind gesture was in appreciation of our military service). This is probably some of the best barbecue in San Angelo. I gave it a four-star rating because it is not the best barbecue I've had I've had a lot of good barbecue to get five stars for me for barbecue it takes a lot. But you get a lot of food for your money. It's not the cheapest what is worth the price they do have an excellent smoked turkey and great brisket. Their sauce is not so sweet it's more of a tangy spicy barbecue sauce and it's good. I do recommend this barbecue place to all my customers the extra BBQ and San Angelo from Uber. There is still a couple of barbecue places I haven't tried in San Angelo but it is still a good deal and the staff is very friendly and very helpful. read more

Wow. My experience at this seemingly authentic establishment was truly awful and left a bad taste in my mouth, both literally and figuratively. I arrived with my family to celebrate a graduation and was optimistic once I smelled the scent of wood-fired Texas BBQ. Once I entered the establishment, the experience became uncomfortable and hostile. A group of seven large men entered behind my family. Not only were they loud and inconsiderate of the noise, but also began to harass and heckle my family. Some of the men tried to corner and harass my wife while simultaneously intimidate me. The owner, who decided to hide in the back, did nothing to assist my family and me. We ordered about $100 of what we assumed would be good Texas BBQ and proceeded to our vehicle to pick up our order via drive-thru. We received our food and drove five minutes back to our hotel. When we sat down in our room to eat what we hoped would be the only redeeming quality of the experience, we were seriously underwhelmed. The chopped brisket was 80% fat, the ribs were dry and over-smoked, the jalapeno sausage was so greasy we could've strained them and cooked an entirely different meal, and to top it off we were given one single ramekin of BBQ sauce even though the waitress assured us we would all have our own. If I could give this business 0 stars, I would. Control your patrons and serve better food. read more

The brisket was good, the bbq sauce was really good. I like a sauce that isn't overpowering and this sauce had just a hint of flavor and added extra moisture to the sandwich.
