Joe, Nancy's son, came down for a couple of days, and we decided to go out to eat, but didn't know where. Then I remembered a BBQ place just up the street that has great reviews. So that's where we are headed. Up a few blocks, we spotted the BBQ place. It's called "The PIT BBQ"; not many cars here, but it is an early dinner for us. Walked in, and it looks great inside. They have a wall painted stating that 'we were once a trailer, and now we are here', or something like that. Sounds good to me. This is the type of place where you order your food after viewing the Menu Board overhead, and the guy prepares your food right in front of you. Then you pick out your drink and pay for your tray of BBQ Goodness. Joe ordered a 1/4 pound of Fatty Brisket, 1/4 pound of chopped Brisket, 1/4 pound of Jalapeño Sausage, Potato Salad, and Coleslaw. Joe also loaded up his tray with extra Jalapeños, White Onions slivers, and BBQ Sauce. When I try a new BBQ place, I like to sample the meats. I ordered a 1/4 pound of Fatty Brisket, 1/4 pound of regular Sausage, and a Quarter-Chicken. Also, the Potato Salad. I loaded up my tray with Pickles and White Onion slivers, along with the BBQ Sauce. My Wife went with their Chopped Brisket Sandwich and a Diet Coke. Joe went with a Shiner Bock 'Rocket' Draft Beer (Rocket identifies the size of the glass). I am having a Coors Light Draft. Orders are in, and the trays are full of lots of meats. Located a table and poured their BBQ Sauce on the meats on my tray. Joe and I also had a slice of bread. My first bite was the Fatty Brisket, and it was Very Moist, Tasty, and Brisketlicious, with the perfect amount of Fatty on the 1/4 pound slice I have. The BBQ Sauce is also a hit, and one of the Best tasting one in San Angelo. We all LOVE it. Joe also said that the Fatty Brisket is very tasty. My Wife Loved her Chopped Brisket Sandwich, and also said it was the Best one she has had in San Angelo, and that BBQ Sauce goes perfectly with the sandwich. My regular Sausage is Very Tasty with lots of flavor in every bite. The outer casing is a might bit thick for me, but also goes well with the Sausage, lots of flavor throughout. Joe also thought his Chopped Brisket was Very Delicious with lots of flavor, and he Loved the Jalapeno Sausage. It has the right amount of Jalapeno without setting your mouth on fire. Now for that Quarter-Chicken. Most BBQ places, at least for me, dry out their Chicken when BBQing, but at "The PIT BBQ", it comes our Juicy, Tender and Very Tasty. Especially when you add the BBQ Sauce. This is a Big Plus for me, and "The PIT BBQ" is now my favorite BBQ place in town, and we have been to a good number of them. My Wife and Joe feel the same way. This is Way Better than the others. Their Potato Salad is also very flavorful, made with Potatoes that are actually prepared the way they should be. Joe said the coleslaw was very good. This is also a plus for me because some places have a mushy Potato Salad and flat Coleslaw. Let's just say The PIT BBQ has just about everything you need when going out for BBQ, especially if you're looking for the Best BBQ in San Angelo. The seating area inside is very large with tall tables and some great decor all around. Outside, in back, they have an all-covered Patio area with fans blowing and plenty of lights, along with their Trailer they began serving their BBQ. For those cooler months, they also have plenty of heaters throughout. When enjoying your BBQ on the patio, you are on some of the thickest outdoor artificial grass, synthetic grass, artificial turf, or synthetic turf- whatever you want to call it- it's there to give our feet some comfort. Have you visited The World Championship American Royal BBQ in Kansas City, MO? 8/22/2026 we came here on a whim as first time customers. Their menu isn't a typical BBQ menu so it took a little bit for us to decide what we wanted. You place your order at the counter and they build you bowl or plate as you order. We looked at the couple ahead of us in line and said "we will have what they are having". The Gonzo is was and to our surprise we really liked it. I'm not going to give the ingredients so you'll have to go and decide for yourself. The portion sizes are enough for two so decide together if you are going split a meal. They do offer a nice selection of beverages and a small pastry/desert selection. Well, we're regulars at The Pitt BBQ and had been excited to get some really good catfish on Friday night. They'd had it as a regular menu item a while back and it was delicious, cooked to order and perfectly seasoned and breaded, but it had not been available for several months now. We noticed the Fish on Friday for Lent sign and thought we'd get some. Well, we ordered and to our surprise it was pulled out of a pan in their steam table and it was not the same at all. Apparently frozen breaded fish that was cooked in an oven or an air fryer thing and kept barely warm in the steam table. We will go back for the BBQ, but dang, don't try to fake us out on the catfish. Also, first time seeing the new patio and it's really nice, shady and looks good. read more

First time trying the pit and it was very good. I had been wanting to try it for awhile since I had worked in that building for 10 years when it was Boomers. They really changed it up. They now have a real restaurant with eat in dining. Counter service vs the food truck pictured earlier. Hours changed as well to be open longer and every day. I stopped in to get a sandwich to go. I got the pulled pork sandwich. It was good, but it was small for $8.50. It was basically pulled pork on a hamburger bun. The people working the counter were very nice. Overall, I don't feel it's worth the price, especially for the sandwich. I haven't tried all the BBQ offerings, only the pulled pork. read more

We came to ThePit BBQ after a local reffered us to it. So glad we took him up on it. This is a great place. The place can accommodate for large groups. The food is phenomenal. Brisket is on point, the jalapeño cream corn is delicious as was the baked potato with extra butter and cheese. The wrap was also a hit within our group of eaters. I can't stressed enough about the service. Extremely nice guy weighing the meats and the efficiency of the cashier made for a good lunch. Good options are the Gonzo, a frito pie with pulled pork or chopped beef along with creamed corn, beans and sausage, and the Jail Break, Peanut butter and jelly with brisket. Checked YELP for a good local place to stop for lunch on the road from Ruidoso to San Antonio. The PIT was highly recommended so we cut though town to find the food truck parked on a concrete slab inside a big chain link enclosure. Wooden picnic tables with shade umbrellas provided a dining on site option. The menu - aaahhh. Brisket, chopped beef, pulled pork, sausage - by the pound, on a sammy or wrap, in a baked potato - so many options! We placed our order with a big guy with a bandana on his head (one of the owners). Our choices were the jalapeno cheese sausage (tender and flavorful!) wrapped in a flour tortilla, the signature Jailbreak sandwich, and a side of cheesy squash. The Jailbreak is a soft bun smeared with peanut butter and a big blob of grape jelly topped with a nice slice of brisket. I know it sounds weird and possibly gross, but it was FABULOUS. Super tender brisket matched with those other distinctive flavors somehow really works! Take a chance and try it! The squash was cooked to perfection and SO DELICIOUS. It's a very nice place with nice and great people working I just don't know what kind of barbecue y'all eat in San Angelo but it wasn't whatever the hell they gave me. Came in for a chopped beef sandwich and when I get home I've just been given a complete sandwich of just pork fat (I don't know if others like that or what) but it was completely disgusting and barley edible to the point I gave it to my dog. Finally excellent BBQ in San Angelo. BBQ has always been a weak spot in San Angelo, which is strange given its location. Well the city finally has a place that competes with the Hill country area The only drawback is that it is only available via a food truck with outside picnic table seating. They have been working on opening an indoor restaurant for a long time but we have seen minimal progress. Both the lean and more fatty briskets were fantastic with a very nice smoke ring and great flavor. The pork ribs were very good with great flavor and the jalapeño and cheese sausage was great as well. They do not have multiple sauce options but we quite liked the one BBQ sauce offered. We had the potato salad and jalapeño creamed corn sides and both were very good. If you are in the mood for BBQ, I highly recommend stopping by The Pit for takeout or a nice meal at the picnic tables if the weather is nice. I've eaten bbq all over Texas....hell, I've eaten bbq all over the country. The first time I tried The Pit I almost didn't stop there. The lady I was with wanted to sit and eat and it was a damn hot day and their seating is outside. So glad we stopped. As soon as you get to the window he hands you a sample piece of brisket. WOW!!! It's perfect. I ordered a sliced brisket sandwich, a beef rib, and we got a jailbreak sandwich to share just because we wanted to taste the peanut butter and jelly and brisket together. I have only one complaint and that is the excessive pepper crusted on the beef rib, but that's just a personal taste - the meat was cooked to perfection. Since that first time The Pit has been my go-to bbq spot. If you're in San Angelo and have a few minutes (the line is never too long) it's an absolute must. You won't be sorry. OK, other plans fell through at the last minute, so we ended up at The Pit again. Husband had the Porkster sandwich. It was big, it was intimidating, it was delicious and he could not eat it all (pulled pork, brisket, sausage, slaw). Halfway through he gave up on the bun as it could not contain the monster sandwich. Jesse S's photo of the sandwich is accurate. I had a brisket (wet) pitwich and side of creamy jalapeño corn. Creamy corn was delicious and hot (temp, not spicy). I took 1/2 the meat off my sandwich and still had a substantial sandwich that the bun barely held up to. The brisket is good and tender with a solid smoke ring and a great bark... i still find it too salty (the outer edges at least). I'm sorry this Yelp site is unclaimed by the owner. I'd really like to see sandwiches available in different size options.
