2/28/2026 we opted for some BBQ after last minute changes with other dinner plans. We are 2 months new to San Angelo from the Great Lakes area so not that familiar with San Angelo. Now, I'm born and raised mostly in Kansas City, MO, home of the world famous American Royal and American Royal BBQ so I know BBQ! My second taste is authentic Mexican food having lived in Southern California. OK back to BBQ, we decided on Bodacious simply because we have driven past it numerous times and it's close to historic downtown. The restaurant is very clean with plenty of seating inside and outside. We were welcomed in and the friendly team member took our order. The menu has several items to pick from and I was really hoping for burnt ends and did not see them on the menu. I haven't had burnt ends since leaving Kansas City back in 2013. Our wait wasn't very long until he called my name. Due to low supply of ribs my husband was only able to get a 1/2 order with his coleslaw which was ok because they discounted the price by 1/2 so not bad. I opted for the 2 meat dinner with 2 sides. I would have like a little more of the meat as I mostly got sausage. We both loved our meals, tender flavorful meat, great baked beans and the coleslaw and Mac-n-cheese were good as well. The prices were comparable to other restaurants in the area plus they have a desert choice too. While we were sitting and devouring our dinner, we noticed a lot of carry out orders so that was nice to see their carry out business was busy. We try to avoid chain restaurants and stick to mom & pop businesses and we prefer to do business downtown or as close to it as possible to support our local businesses. Those to the N, W, S, E and rural areas of town can support those outer-lying businesses. We will be returning customers and I do recommend you give these folks a try the next time you have the urge for BBQ. We're new to San Angelo and decided to search out some BBQ. It was pretty good. The best part were the ribs, they were perfection. Great smoke, crispy and tender. The Bo-tato was their loaded potato, I asked for bbq sauce on the side and I'm glad I did, the sauce is different than what I'm used to but still good. As a reminder: 3 star BBQ in the Republic is probably better than 5 star anywhere else... Made a detour here just before closing time. Brisket and ribs to go with a few sides. Ribs are good. Tender and flavorful with just the right amount of pull. Brisket is okay - a little dry - needed the sauce, which is tangy but a bit sweet. Potato salad, cole slaw and beans are all average. The meats were OK, not much for the money and it all tasted dry. The sides were OK. We didn't try any of the desert because I put down enough money at this place to give most things a try. This is the best bbq I've had in SA so far. The brisket had a nice smoke ring and was very tender. Link sausage had a nice bite and a little heat. Potato salad was NOT out of a box, it tasted homemade. And the beans were flavorful with bits of meat in them. One unique thing are the sweet hot pickles. You can help yourself to them and add a nice kick to your plate. The workers were busy and food served hot. The one thing they could improve on (and this is for 99% of restaurants in this town) is the restaurant ambiance. It's old and in need of an update inside. The flooring and tables/booths scream old Taco Bell decor/colors from the 70's. But the food is still really good. read more

We crossed through West Texas on a mini road trip and of all the BBQ places we tried, we ranked this the worst. I really don't understand how this got such good reviews. The sausage was strangely light and full of holes, the brisket was dry, the "baked potato" was watery (boiled?), the butter is hydrogenated margarine... Basically, the only thing we enjoyed here was the ribs. They were delicious and fall-off-the-bone even served cold (which is how they were served). Otherwise, the sides were mostly inedible and likely came out of a can. The desserts also tasted like boxed mix. Old MREs have literally tasted better. My family sat around the table, trying to figure out what it reminded us of and my brother nailed it: School Lunch. Except, I would venture to say school lunches taste better and at $3/meal, are also a better deal. Everything seemed so minimal effort here - the cleanliness, the service, the food... When it comes to bodacious it's biggest defining quality for me would be their consistency. While I definitely have had some more mind blowing barbecue, I do absolutely appreciate the consistent quality and clean kitchen every time I go. I will say this if there is a certain menu item I would refer you to it would absolutely be the Melman sandwich . I do also enjoy their coleslaw potato salad and their beans. A barbeque restaurant which serves a variety of typical BBQ meats. I have been here twice. The second time I came I got the Brisket sandwich for about $7. Overall I wasn't impressed by the sandwich. The main problem here (as well as the previous time I came here) is that the meat is way too bland. I don't think it's salted or anything and really relies on squeezing a lot of barbeque onto the brisket to have a flavor. A lot of people at my table had to use my barbeque sauce that was provided to put flavor on their meats too. I remember the baked potato last time I got was underwhelming too. I tried this place, because of the high ratings. Maybe I came on an off day, but I was not impressed. I got the chopped brisket sandwich, baked beans, and potato salad. The brisket was somewhat dry, didn't have much flavor, so I had to add lots of sauce. Not sure what happened with the potato salad, but it was almost inedible. The beans were probably the best part of the meal. Service was quick, and the food came out hot. Maybe I'm just spoiled by the barbecue I've had in Dallas, and the hill country. I thought I had done a review of this place when I went (TWICE !) in Sept. I usually get brisket and sausage and the 2 meat plate did not diappoint. IT was very good. The guy said I really should try their ribs, but I simply had no more room. The next day, I thought, why not ? So I went back to have the ribs. This BBQ joint had great smoke flavor and the chopped brisket was very tender. I also had the hotl links, they had a smoky ending that sneaks up on you. One of the nice things was the pickle onion bar to ad crispy and tangy to your bbq or top for a sandwich. They have white or wheat bread to go with your meal. I want to come back and try the sloppy joe sandwich. I recommend a light amount of bbq sauce in the chopped brisket, the hot links would be fine on there own. This place was ok decent idk for $50 but hey. We got the banana pudding not the best honestly. It was a clean friendly place except for at the counter the men acted like it pissed them off or it was a big issue that we was looking the menu over cause we never had been. I was visiting my husband in Texas and the night before I was due to leave I realized we hadn't stopped for authentic Texan BBQ anywhere in Texas! So I yelped around and found Bodacious Bar-B-Que. Thankfully, it was still open! So on our way back from San Antonio we stopped off to grab some dinner. I can hands down say this is the BEST BBQ I've had! The meat was full of flavor, their sauces are delicious. And gosh-darnit; they had the best sweet tea I've ever had! The pulled pork I couldn't stop raving over. The brisket was tender and delicious. Portions are very reasonable with their prices likewise. Just thinking back on eating here is making my mouth water and crave more of their BBQ! Will definitely go to again if I'm back in the area. I would definitely give this place a zero star review if I was able to. We ordered 2 combo plates with an extra side of coleslaw and 3 desserts. We both received 2 slices of brisket (out of the 5 slices) that had to be more than a day old. It was too tough to eat and pretty much flavorless. Those pieces should have been thrown away before they were served, because that is what we did with them. The other pieces of brisket were ok, but there is much better in this town. I though the potato salad was ok, but my wife's was not. She threw it away after 1 bite. The same with the coleslaw. It was sour, so it got thrown away as well. The sausage was ok. It tasted like it was store bought, but it was ok. There is so much better in this town. The pecan pie was not sweet. You have an expectation for the flavor of a pecan pie, this was NOT it. So now is the this that made me decide to write a review. If a restaurant is not good, I usually will just not eat there again. If someone asks me I will tell them about my experience, but I have never written a review. I live about 10 miles away from this place. I specifically asked to make sure everything was in the bags. I told the girl that was checking me out that if I was missing anything that I would be sent back. The banana pudding I ordered was not in the bag! This was my wife's Mother's Day meal and HER banana pudding, and it was not there. So I came back to get it after I ate my substandard meal. I got my pudding, (which was pretty good, but who can ruin banana pudding?) but nothing was done about the fact that I had to drive 20 miles to get the pudding. Nobody cared. My wife's Mother's Day meal was ruined by bad food and terrible service. So now I am expecting some platitude from the owners about "How our customers are important to us," and "We hope you 'll decide to visit us again and get a taste of what we are really about." So my question is this, why would I go back to a place that has literally left a bad taste in my mouth? Apparently, I did get a "taste" of it. The meat does not have much flavor. We had brisket, ribs, pulled pork and turkey. All but the brisket was well cooked, and late in the day, brisket being a bit dry is maybe forgivable, but no real seasoning. If you are the type to rely on added sauce for flavor, you'll probably be okay. If you want the meat to have a good smoke flavor and seasonings on its own, this is not the joint for you. read more

Craving BBQ in San Angelo on a Saturday night, Bodacious BBQ hit the spot. I'm normally a 2 meat-plate kinda guy, but I wasn't terribly hungry, so I went for the Bo-Tato (standard baked potato with toppings and 1/4lb of meat) with chopped brisket. Potato was average size - not small enough to leave you hungry, not large enough to make a food baby. It does come as prep-your-own style, so be prepared to make it yourself. It was tasty enough. Brisket was excellent. Moist. Tender. BBQ sauce is kept up front - in squeeze bottles that are kept warmed. A nice touch and a good complement to the meat. Although I didn't go for the plate, I was a bit disappointed in the selection of sides - that was part of the reason I didn't go for the more expensive meal. Hopefully my review gets seen as constructive criticism to help the business do better to bring in more customers. The main reason I went with 2 stars is because the brisket, which I feel should be the star of the show disappointed so much. The brisket was dry and rubbery . I've been to many barbecue restaurants and this was the worse . The sausage, pork ribs and turkey were good but nothing amazing . Another reason for two stars is the portions . I paid $50 for my plate and a baked potato and for that price, I've seen way more served on my plate. At first I thought they forgot to give me another plate with the rest of my food but no, that was it. Third reason why I gave two stars is because there was no Mac and cheese. I ordered two sides of it and was told there wasn't anymore and if I'd want some other sides. I told them I'd wait for the Mac and cheese thinking it would be ready in a few minutes I didn't get the Mac and cheese until after I had long been done with my meal. To top it off, the Mac and cheese was horrible. It was like the box Kraft Mac and cheese but more liquidity. I literally walked over to the garbage can and threw it away. The third reason behind my rating is the baked potato didn't even come served ready to eat. Every bbq spot I've ever been to serves it ready to eat. My girlfriend had to do all the work. Wish the brisket had some salt (I generally prefer everything very low sodium too...) but otherwise was moist. Can't complain about anything. Bodacious has become one of my go to lunch spots! I'm never disappointed in the quick and friendly service. The pickle and onion bar is awesome! I always opt for the regular dill pickles but my husband is a huge fan of the sweet jalapeno pickles! They are literally slicing or chopping orders right in front of you at the counter and it all smells amazing! Your food comes out quick and hot and their BBQ sauce is to die for! I recently got to try their spicy sauce and I loved it. I'm a big fan of their potato salad too! Oh and of course, who doesn't love sweet tea with their BBQ! Coming from the east coast.. Thinking of TX, you think off good ol' BBQ! And this place did not disappoint! Brisket was so tender and fall apart, the pulled chopped pork was my boyfriends favorite! Sooo flavorful even without the BBQ sauce. Which was delicious as well. As for my favorite?! The ribs! Fall of the bone pork tenderness. Mmm just drooling thinking about it. The potato was eh could be better but surprisingly the coleslaw was so good! Refreshing and tasty. Prices were reasonable and service was alright. The only reason it's not a 5 in my books? My mom ordered a smoked turkey breast for Thanksgiving. It was good, but we didn't care for the heavy smoke flavor, but it was very juicy. It was supposed to take an hour to heat and took more like 2 hours. Next year, I will just make a turkey. It only takes another hour. read more

Desert was really good had the banana pudding and wife enjoyed the pecan pie. Then we had the pulled pork sandwich and the rib plate covered in their bbq sauce which made it even more delicious. While we enjoyed our meat ( Combo platters) of ribs, sausage, and brisket with sides of beans, cole slaw and potato salad, my husband got some serious food poisioning. The only things he ate and I did not werr the potato salad and sausage. It was very disappointing because we really enjoyed our meal and flavors. His stomach is way stronger than mine yet he ended up in the bathroom for 12 hours, and then sick in bed. To the owners - please make sure you do not have anything serious going on.
