"OUR VALENTINES DAY" - Yesterday was Valentines Day (in case you didn't know, and if you didn't know, you can buy your Valentine some candy and flowers for half price today). Anyway, since my Lovely Wife didn't want to cook up a Special Valentines Dinner for me, I decided to take her out to eat. For some reason she didn't want to eat at Wienerschnitzel, so I came up with something else - "Packsaddle BBQ" for their Fried Catfish. They recently have been chosen as the Best Fried Fish in all of San Angelo. But before that, our Valentines Day started off with Coffee (Honey Almond), Cards & Gifts and a Delicious Breakfast prepared by my Lovely Wife. We left for Packsaddle a little earlier than our normal dinner time because after we eat we are heading out to the Museum of Fine Arts for a Special Display of "Where Children Sleep". Walked in and was greeted by Rachel, a Server we have had several times. Chatted with her for a while, then chose a booth. Even for an early dinner, there are a good number of people at Packsaddle. McKenna is our Server and we ordered our drinks, then the "Fried Catfish"; 4-Catfish Filets Hand Breaded in Southern Style Cornmeal, served with Hushpuppy, Tartar Sauce & Red Sauce with choice of 2-sides, chose Mac-N-Cheese and Pinto Beans. We are sharing this plate. It didn't take them long to serve us our Catfish and it looks Delicious with 4-Huge Filets. My first bite was without any sauce - this Catfish is served HOTTT and it's mighty good stuff. Love the thick breading on this thick filet, very tastylicious with a light crunch. My Wife said that this is the Best Catfish she has had, and she wanted some more from my plate. Hey fellows, it's okay this time because it's Valentines Day - if that's what she wants, that's what she gets. Love You Baby - have another. This is some of the Best Catfish you can have anywhere. Love their Tartar sauce and the Red Sauce is thicklylicious. The Pinto Beans are mighty-meaty-beans and the Mac-N-Cheese is also some good stuff - and my Wife LoVed the Hushpuppy. Packsaddle BBQ also gives the Ladies a Chocolate dipped Strawberry for Valentines Day - and we both enjoyed this. The Strawberry was Sweet-N-Juicylicious with a nice amount of Chocolate. Nicely done Packsaddle - we loved everything we had. McKenna earned the "Dollar-Bow-Tie" Award for going 'above-n-beyond' the norm. There's a reason this place has been in business for as long as it has. I have had pretty much everything on the menu from the fried fish, hamburger, chopped brisket sandwich, brisket plate, all the sides, and most desserts. I have never had a bad meal or experience. The waitresses are very good at what they do and they're always very nice. The inside has changed a little over the years, but still has that cozy cafe feel. It's definitely worth trying. I would recommend trying the brisket plate, but that's just my opinion. read more

The food was incredible. I got the surf and turf. They brought out two huge piece of catfish along with two good sized ribs. My husband had the ribs. The platter had ribs mashed potatoes with gravy and green beans. The potatoes were some of the best I've ever tasted. Then we decided to try the peach cobbler with homemade vanilla ice cream. I can't remember the last time I've had homemade ice cream that was that good! I got the chocolate cake by Emma. Man did it bring back memories for this Texas girl about Fridays in elementary school. I ordered the 1/2 lb brisket plate which consisted of 4 (very small) slices of brisket. For my sides I ordered fried okra and potato salad. The okra and potato salad were great, but I got about 12 pieces of okra and probably 3 tablespoons full of potato salad. This plate was over $16 and I finished my food still hungry for more. I don't recommend this particular plate. Maybe their portions are better with different meals. I'm not sure if I will be going back. Thank you for a great lunch! I was in Texas for a week and this was the only BBQ I got to eat: it was totally worthy! I got the lovely beef brisket with fried okra and beans. Our server promised me creamy beans and she delivered. The meat was juicy and tender, and the sauce... finger-licking good! I've been here twice. The first time I regretted only getting a third of a lb. The brisket was heavenly, mash potatoes creamy, and fries weren't bad either. Now the second time, I had high expectations and while it was still good, it wasn't like the first time. I ended up feeling a little queezy after but that's likely from eating too much too fast. The fries were very soggy, I kind of enjoy soggy fries however they had no salt on them very bland. They definitely need some salt. Peach cobbler tastes more like an apple cobbler, was missing the peaches. The key lime pie was good and so tart. Everyone was very friendly. We enjoyed our experience. On our third visit to Packsaddle, this time takeout we were surprised with poor quality food. To start with our order of fried pickles (pictured) were really salty. So salty we threw the entire order in the trash. My wife and I both had the combo plates with brisket and turkey. The meat was as great as if we ate in, it would have been nice to have some bbq sauce included. Ended up using some sauce from HEB. Sides had good flavor but portion size was quite small.
