Both the bar and the dining room were empty, which had us a bit worried. They even had to turn on the dining room lights for us. But we stuck it out and were glad we did. Food was delicious. The only complaint, and it is minor, is that my sauce had a lot of bay leaves in it and they didn't remove them. I had to hunt down and remove the whole and broken leaves, since they aren't really edible. And re the empty restaurant, that resolved itself by the time we left. They were seating a party of 10 in the dining room. And the bar had 2 tables of 4 and 2 tables of 2 (12 total) all eating what looked like good food. Somehow we managed to hit them during their Sunday evening lull. We didn't try it, but the very nice owner tells us they specialize in charcoal grilled chicken. He made it sound good and it is on our list to order next time we're in the area.

The pastry is so flaky, and that creamy custard filling makes it hard to stop at just one. Seriously, don't skip the natas! And the NATA LATTE?! I absolutely loved it. If you're already a fan of pastéis de nata, having those flavors worked into a latte just makes sense. Definitely something I would order again. We also tried the cod fritters, which were very good and another nice addition to everything else we ordered. Between the huge breakfast sandwiches, delicious Portuguese flavors, flaky natas and that nata latte, Gilda gives you plenty of reasons to come back. While many of the Portuguese restaurants I have visited have been more upscale- Iberia seemed pretty casual which had me wondering about the food quality. But I liked what I saw when I looked at the menu- lots of meat and shellfish, and sausage on fire. When an appetizer is offered on fire, I can't really say no. Just like flamining saganaki- every time I order chorizo that is still on fire when served, I feel the same excitement I did as a kid. As I sipped my $2.50 glass of red, the "longaniza portuguesa" came out in flames, and crisped up in front of our eyes. Its a really flavorful sausage, though it might be too heavy to eat on your own. We also shared a dish of pork and clams with fried potatoes- enough for a group ($17). While the pieces of pork were dry, the clams, crisped potatoes, and especially the broth, were really impressive. I didn't feel bad drinking the buttery broth by the spoonful.
