My husband and I ate outside and the view is amazing! It was a great experience to sit and enjoy their delicious roast beef and seeing different types of boats sailing by. read more

This is a fun place to go to for dinner with a group. Me and a couple of girlfriends had the crab & lobster toast, the chicken with potatoes, and the chopped salad. It was honestly one of the most incredible meals I've ever had. The atmosphere of the restaurant is really cool. There was a live band playing the night we went - I'm looking forward to coming back in the summer when you can sit outside along the river. Also, make sure you ask for the bread. It comes with this really yummy onion spread. Overall, a fantastic time and a delicious meal. read more

Had to go with the signature chicken and it was not a disappointment. The spinach and mashed potatoes were the perfect mix with the flavor of the glaze. I wasn't overstuffed so the apple strudel was just right - warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. read more

Have to say this was our first time there and it was truly AMAZING!!! The staff was great and the food was out of this world!!

The food was amazing and so was the service! Great for sharing. Matt you're the best!

I had high expectations for this place. It looks very impressive, the decor is nice and the outside seating is wonderful if you can get it, I was not able to and that is fine. My wife, my 2 sons and I went around 2:30 on a Sunday and apparently at that time all they have is a small tiny menu that is called their happy hour menu. I would rethink that name because there was nothing happy about it. Pretty much the only real "meal" you can have is a cheeseburger. They do not adjust the temperature of the meat for you and they explain this. It comes well done with cheese, pickles, lettuce, and tomato, that's it. No fries, no nothing. A 2 patty burger on a block of wood. 5 Guys honestly make a better no bells and whistles burger. I ordered the shrimp and avocado toast because I was starving and I figured since I wasn't getting fries that I would have room for this. I must admit that it was very delicious but almost non-existent. I don't know what loaf that bread came from but it was super tiny. It was 4 small bite size pieces. I left very disappointed and so did my family. They should just tell you "all we have are appetizers" because pretty much that's all it was and only a selection of 5 items. I don't see myself going back to this place. read more

Simple concept without a complicated menu. Service was awesome, as were the cocktails. I got to keep my flask that the cocktail was served in, built into the price of the drunk... oops i mean drink. The fried fish came out bonless, with head and tail still attached. The roast beef was charred on the outside and tender and juicy inside. I was a little surprised to see the place wasnt too busy, albeit a Sunday night. read more

We came to River Roast for our anniversary dinner. We spoke to the executive chef at the bar while we waited for our table to be ready. We knew what we wanted to order before we were seated so we ordered rabbit, artichoke hearts, and shrimp. The first app came after an hour, the entree came 20 minutes later. The other two apps came after the entree. Every single bit of food we ate was absolutely delicious. That and how the staff apologized and bent over backward for our troubles. It a newer restaurant so they are working things out, so we had to cut some slack! Food is amazing, drinks were strong, amazing city views. Try the rabbit! read more

$100 for dry fried potatos, gamey beef with a giant wad of fat with two fried eggs on an old brioche. and a roast that was cut way too soon and was swimming in blood.. very shameful.. was expecting high hopes from this place. server was way too nervous to be kind or attentive. despite the nice design/decor. i wouldn't give this place more than 6 months. read more

Went with my fiancée for dinner on Christmas Eve-- everything was wonderful. We shared the chicken, which was moist and delicious and the crispy skin was the best part. Also got a side of sweet potatoes which were spicy, but good, and a ginger cocktail that was strong but perfect. Loved the ambience in the place and the wait staff was attentive and professional. Only complaint was table location by the servers station wasn't ideal, but that was very minor. Will return and so glad we chose River Roast to spend our Christmas Eve! Can't wait to see what it's like to sit outside during the warmer months. read more

Went there last night for a pre-theater dinner. Location is great, and ambience is really nice. Comfortable place, a little loud but intimate. In the summer I bet the outside seating along the river would be fantastic. Food was good but there was a small problem described below. Bread and onion-herb spread was a good treat if not so remarkable. Starter was scotch egg, which was nice - perfectly soft boiled interior in a delicious package. My wife and I shared the roast pork. I am sorry to say that although the pork itself was flavorful, the carved portion we had was dry and overcooked. It reminded me of when I was a kid when my mother would cook pork to white, which in the old days was de rigueur but in modern times is no longer necessary. I was hoping for moist tender pork, but what we got was far from that. Oh dear. Beer, wine and cocktail selection was good. I was disappointed to not get a pint pour for my draft IPA, given the pint-pour price, but that is how it goes sometimes. Service was awesome! Total dinner for two with drinks and an appetizer was $100 plus tip. I am happy overall about the experience. I'd be happy to go back and try again, it's often hard to get roasts just right but that's what they do there :) other peoples' portions looked great. read more

Such a pleasant surprise!!! Love the atmosphere. Unique cocktails. Decent wine list. Fairly limited entree menu but tons of veggie options and starters. (Limited entree menu means you have to be ready to share with your dinner partner as most meals are meant to share.) Went with a friend last night and we shared the fire roasted branzino and brussel sprouts. Both were excellent!! Great flavor, great quality, good presentation too. The "chips" were interesting. Very flavorful but not what I would really want in a side dish. Even the bread "starter" was outstanding! The only reason I gave them a 4 out of 5 is that the service was exceptionally slow. There's a fine art in giving your patrons time to decide and leaving them for extended periods of time. We had a show to go to and was almost late.... But otherwise - great, great, great experience!!! read more

Interesting menu with dishes that are more geared towards family style sharing. We got the roast pork, roast chicken, fish (sea bass), and veggies plus several extra sides. All of the food was amazing, and for someone who's not big on roast fish, that bass came out absolutely perfect. The roast pork was probably my favorite and it came in 3 styles; ribs, loins and rib end bits that were nice an fatty/crispy. The chicken was quite a show and carved tableside and served on a bed of the most crispy potatoes I've ever had. The only down side was the drinks to go with such amazing food was a little lacking. What they had was good, but everything seemed to be served in little juice glasses. The inside gets a little loud but they also have a great patio area right next to the river so on nice summer days it's a great option. read more

Went there the other night with three other friends. Unfortunately, this Chicago weather didn't cooperate and it was too cold to sit outside (boo!). But the food! The food was fantastic! We started with the Scotch egg, house pickles and the pork meatballs. All very good. We shared the big fish (australian sea bass) and whole chicken - both were phenomenal. The fish was seasoned so well and the chicken was moist and cooked perfectly. We may have over-ordered our starter and dinner (haha), so there was no room for dessert. From what I saw, it looked good. And if their desserts taste as good as their other courses, you couldn't go wrong. read more

The service was great meal was outstanding We had the Fish, Chicken, and the Pork Would go back again today if I could Also the view was spectacular 5 stars is not enough read more

I have been here at least 10 times and every time the food is just perfect. The chicken is amazing and the roasted fish is outstanding. Chef Hogan is incredible and the entire staff is just great! ! read more

The blues brunch was a lot of fun. Nothing like being on the river with a Chicago musical classic. The food was a bit all over the place. The chicken bites were delicious but the burger was less than stellar. It also took a long time to get a drink. read more

Loved the food- couldn't get over how the flavor a and menu all pulled together. Service was good, didn't have a reservation & was able to eat on the river at 945pm. The menu changes all the time- appreciated the attention to detail with the presentation! read more

We returned to our favourite Chicago restaurant to celebrate our 6th wedding anniversary, and as usual, the experience did not disappoint. Managers Kevin and Chris assured a sweet and memorable celebration, and for us, this place will be our go-to for other such special moments in Life. We love you, River Roast! read more

Seemed like a great idea at first, with the great view on the Chicago river. We elected to sit inside as the wait for an outdoor table was over an hour. This is where things turned not great, in fact, bad. It took 45 minutes for our food to come and there we're only about 5 other tables who were in the restaurant. When our food finally came, it was lukewarm (guessing it has been sitting waiting for someone to run it to us). My husband's sandwich was soggy and my egg was overcooked. Net-net come if you can get a table outside and have drinks. There are way too many places to eat in Chicago with FAR better food. We will not be back. read more

First time I visited I was with colleagues for a Happy Hour. They had incredible fried chicken with a cute honey pot. The shrimp toast was perfect. And the drinks are great. Second time I visited for lunch on a Friday. We were seated outside on the River, which made for a wonderful lunch. The salad I had was unique but perfectly balanced flavors. Highly recommend! read more

Always great, excellent place to dine and stroll the new river walk.

Yes, as good as it gets. My mother and I are vegetarians so this is not the most ideal place once your start reading the menu, however once our vegetarian dish came we were completely delighted, probably one of the best vegetarian diners we have eaten at a restaurant. Thank you for our night out in Chicago, we will definitely come back and hope to be able to enjoy the city view. read more

Ok. Let me just say. Get the whole roasted chicken with the potatoes. Just do it. Dont think twice. Just trust me. Mind blowing.

This is a great restaurant where you can take in the views by the river on their patio outside and enjoy a wonderful meal. Roast chicken sounds like something everyone can do, but this place does it best. Seriously, the best I've ever had. And the potatoes! Oh the potatoes are delightful. Service was good and cocktails were also tasty. Highly recommended for a tasty meal that won't entirely break the bank for Chicago! read more

Had a great time with perfect service and delicious food - recommend the Scotch Egg!!

We stopped here before seeing Aladdin today because it is within walking distance of the theatre. Food was ok but the service was awful! No egg on top of the burger as described, dry biscuits & gravy, no refill on coffee even after we asked for it, bacon not as ordered, server never once checked on us without being called over. Blues music that was scheduled for noon was late starting. Overall not my favorite part of the day. They did comp the burger but come on guys, all these other good reviews on Yelp, and we were definitely let down today. Hope it's a one time thing, but there are too many choices in Chicago to try it again any time soon. read more

Amazing ambiance, very friendly and humble staff. We wanted to have a table outside by the river side, we were asked to wait for 20mins but we got the table in like 5 mins. That's so cool!. I loved the Golden Gobbets snack, I will recommend it to everyone. The beers and cocktails are amazing, We also ordered the Whole Chicken. I loved the place. read more

5 girlfriends and I ate here after I tried on maybe 30 wedding dresses downtown. Needless to say we were hungry, hot, and tired. Our reservation wasn't until 730pm, BUT they don't take reservations for the patio along the river, so I had planned to come earlier to just wait for first come first serve seating. Luckily I decided to call and see how busy the patio was (it was 5pm on a Saturday with perfect weather out) and to see if we could move our reservation up. The host (I think his name was Trey) was so kind and said moving it up shouldn't be a problem, and that they could hold a table for all of us if we showed up in the next hour. We were across the river at City Winery, so we chugged our wine and made our way across. Fair warning, there's some construction along the river that kind of made our walk over more difficult than it should have been but that's Chicago summertime for ya. Anyways, we got there and we were seated at the last table on the patio, held specifically for us, with a great view of the river. I was so happy because it was the perfect end to a day of wedding dress shopping, even if I didn't find a gown. As for everything else, the food was amazing, the cocktails were refreshing, and our server (sorry kid I don't remember your name) was very attentive. I would definitely come back here!! read more

TERRIBLE service, staff seemed to not care about anything. Bread was burned black and still served to us! Entree was average, won't be returning. read more

Everything here was good. Food, location, and service. Bloody marry was great. Will sure be back

So dang tasty! My date and i split an 8 oz order of the prime rib (perfectly cooked and seasoned), had the Brussels sprouts side (as good as they say), and had the pork meatballs (which comes with really tasty marinara). This was plenty of food for two. A delightful dining experience all around. Great service too. read more

Only giving two stars for the view which is about the only thing the place has going for it. One of the most over hyped, overrated, and overpriced places in the city. Went there for the whole chicken and what I got was a dry torso of a chicken that came with no legs or wings. All for about $40. The drinks were no saving grace either. Most of their cocktails contain pepper or some savory ingredients which can work but River Roast ends up making them taste like sauce rather than a drink. Save some $$$$ and go to Whole Foods for a whole chicken. You'll get tastier bird that won't come dry and amputated. read more

My brother took me there for my 60th birthday, i ordered the pork roast with the sauce and it was dry and no sauce, the chicken my brother had was dry, we had apple pie alamode, the pie was cold ,so we sent it back ,and then they sent new pie back with whip cream on top, and the pie was still cold, talked to manager, gave us free desert off bill only, i had to ask for applesauce to to eat the pork roast because it was so dry. very disappointed . The only part that was good we got a table by the river read more

A friend told us about this place and we decided to give it a try. The pros: the service was excellent; the food was perfect. We had the pork and the sweet potatoes and there wasn't anything left. Which leads to the cons: The portions are too small for the price. We had wine at $13 a glass and it was served a quarter of the glass full. We dine out enough to know this was a small portion. Also, the main entree is listed on the menu to share for 2, but it wasn't enough. We ate everything and while it was tasty it was also that we were almost left hungry. I will go back, but with a larger group and order more sides to split. read more

Brews & Blues Brunch - LOVED IT! My boyfriend & I stumbled upon River Roast while on a business trip in Chicago (we're from Miami) last month. And let me tell you, we absolutely loved it! From the gorgeous river views & the blues band to set the perfect ambiance, to the amazing food we were pleasantly surprised! The staff was extremely attentive & professional, too! (We both keep talking about our experience at River Roast!) In fact, I made this account to specifically review this awesome restaurant! I had the french toast & he had a breakfast type burrito. Both servings were large & well worth the cost. We also enjoyed a few delicious brews! Thank you for the awesome experience, River Roast - can't wait to be back in The Windy City to check you out again! (Or you could just come down to warm Miami! ) read more

Great view, great food, great service. Terrific beer selection - not in terms of volume, but in terms of quality. Friendly and accommodating staff - everyone greeted and thanked us on the way in and on the way it. Can't believe that a few minor mistakes prompted them to comp our entire order, drinks and all! Truly amazed and recommend River Roast. Will eat here again when I'm back in Chicago. read more
