I'm BIAS, for 2 Reasons Reason 1: Not long after I bought a house, in Sanford, where I hoped some hustle and bustle would erupt... RJB Opened! A small Brewery in a locally significant building was a perfect fit! Reason 2: After some time as a patron, I joined the Brewery Team behind the bar. The way RJB wants to do things, the welcoming nature between RJB & the Community has been awesome!

Finally a brewery in Sanford! River Junction started out as Riverstone, which was an at-home brewing project during Covid. The beer was sold at local pubs, and it grew a following with it's amazing IPAs. In the meantime, the brewer looked for a local space to continue brewing and serving beers. Riverstone is now River Junction and is located in the same building of Shain's of Maine. The space is warm and inviting with modern light fixtures and wooden beams and walls. There is a variety of seating ranging from bar seats, long tables, and couches. Having just opened a day prior, the staff were excited to serve and were welcoming on my recent trip. There were 5 beers being served that were brewed by the brewery, and they were also featuring two from Moat Mountain. I ended up getting three tastings, and the Riverstone Lager and Double IPA were quick favorites. I did see that they were also serving wine, though it wasn't clearly advertised, and they served small snack food like popcorn. I'm excited to see the space and brewery grow, as it will quickly become popular. They are doing everything right, and it's a step in the right direction for Sanford. I highly recommend you give River Junction a try!

Absolutely the best, we go there weekly and love the way they change it up all the time. Try the hard Ice Tea or Lemonade.

When I walk into…read morethe building it reminded me of upbeat hipster kind of place has a nice patio out back with a propane fireplace, not a lot of sitting area and the music was exactly what you would want to expect from a modern brewery. Then I was quickly reminded I was out in the country and not downtown Portland with loud obnoxious rednecks yelling and swearing with their friends. The beer was surprisingly smooth and light for such high alcohol content. But lacked in bold flavor and color. The menu you order from gives descriptions of what the beer is and what it tastes like, but doesn't match what you actually get, in my opinion. I don't mind paying $5 bucks for a 12oz beer but when it compares to other beers in the area that you can get 16oz beer for the same price. I'm not going to waste my money. The real gem here is the food truck that was out back that night. El Camino Mexican Grill. If I could give a review on just the food it would be five stars. I ordered two burritos one for my wife and I and the lady making the food said I would only need one to feed the both of us and man was she ever right. I got a steak burrito that probably had close to a pound of nice marinated steak in it sour cream black beans rice and a huge portion of guacamole all for $10 bucks. I also saw people ordering tacos that looked delicious as well. On the side of the cart there were about 8 different hot sauces to choose from couple were locally made. I tried the habanero blueberry which made a great addition to my already perfect burrito. I don't think I will be returning here for the beer unless I hear of some changes. These guys are definitely on the right path, unfortunately I think they set up shop in a bad location. But I will be on the lookout for that food truck again and may go try others that they host.

The owner is usually pouring beers, there's good music playing, cribbage boards on the tables, and a sweet outdoor space. But what really separates Xota from the droves of other Maine craft breweries is exactly what should: the beer. It is fantastic. During the Corona pandemic you can still get beer from Xota. They are offering curbside pickup. My wife and I went last Sunday and picked up 3 howlers: The Otis, the Logan, and the Xavier. Great to drink by the fire.

Batson River is the latter, and we loved our lunch outing in one of the adorable seasonal outdoor ice fishing sheds. We chose a few "handhelds," including the blackened haddock tacos and fried haddock sandwich, both of which are served with a red cabbage slaw. I enjoyed the tacos - the ratio of fish to slaw and aioli, etc. was just right. And the sandwiches are served with a generous amount of crispy French fries. On a weekday in March, many of the local shops and restaurants were closed. It was an unseasonably warm day, and we were happy to stumble upon Batson River for a fun and memorable lunch!

When we arrived with our dog to check in, we were given a couple of seating options in the outside heated deck area. We chose seats looking outside, which were topped with fur warmers, which made them comfortable to sit on. There are plenty of heaters on, which made it nice and cozy. Also, the plethora of Christmas decorations inside and out, made it also feel cozy, and festive. For lunch, I had the blackened fish tacos, which comes with mango pico, red cabbage slaw, chipotle aioli, cotija, on corn tortillas. They were super flavorful, and delicious. I stuck with fries, and they even had sour cream for dipping them. We will absolutely be back to try more of the menu!

Important to note: they allow dogs. And while we LOVE dogs (we couldn't resist petting the ones running around), I can see how this policy might not be for everyone. The dogs roam freely and off-leash in a large indoor/tented area, which can feel a bit chaotic. A couple of things I wasn't thrilled about: the brewery is cash-only, and there's a $3 cover fee. For what? I have no idea -- there was no live music or anything like that during the hour we spent there. As for the drinks, the beer was... fine. I had the IPA, and while I didn't love it, I'd probably drink it again. The highlight was the pizza. It was phenomenal and made up for some of the other lows.

The kid working the front was SUPER nice, and the beers were good but I'm not sure if they were their beers or guest taps- the labeling isn't great. The pizza was good but not life changing. The real vibe is the fact that this is like a kindergarten gone wrong. The amount of wilding screaming kids was too much for me and look, I LOVE dogs, I brought my own but having someone else's off leash (dogs have to be off leash) and off leash kid begging for pizza while I'm trying to drink a beer in the sun was a little much. I'd go back, but it was too much of a sensory overload to be any fun and the beers were forgettable.

I've been ordering this pizza every time we visit, and I hope they never take it off the menu. The pizza was saltier than we expected, so that missed too. On the bright side, the sweet potato fries was good, the drinks were solid, and the location is great. I think next time I'll just stick with the Portland spot.
