My wife and I love checking out every brewery we can. This was our second location of Batson River we have visited, the first one being their Kennebunk spot. This was a much better experience than that one. I still classify our experience here as average and will have no desire to rush back. Overall from a wide variety of times trying beers at their locations, other bars, and cans at home I have not been super impressed by any of their beers. A few have been decent but in general I will grab beers from other Maine breweries before. Service wise this visit the host and our server were friendly and attentive although wait times at moments were long. The whole ambiance of the spot is a bar that feels more home like than the average bar. The fish camp aspect fits well too because all the fish mounted on the walls too. Lastly food wise it was all decent but nothing I will remember long term. We started with the venison tostada nachos that were good but I expected a little more with the venison. For our entrees I got the fish & chips while my wife got the burger. Maybe they forgot but didn't ask how my wife wanted the burger cooked, it was a little more done than she wanted. Both our fries were under seasoned. With so many breweries/restaurants I have enjoyed more I am going with the three stars. Honestly if you are in the area and looking to try it out, give it a shot! Your experience may be better than ours.

I love this place! We stumbled upon it on a trip to Maine. It's really cute and funky inside with different vibes in different rooms. I started off with one of the fabulous cocktails, which one, I don't remember! But it was tasty! To start off, we got the duck poutine, which was ONG unbelievable! I still dream about it. I got the lobster which is hot buttery and delicious and my friend got the fish tacos, which were also outstanding. Our server was really nice and very efficient. All in all a great experience!

Wonderful atmosphere/service & food... We ordered the Maine Muscles for an app and they were very tasty! The burger I ordered was cooked exactly to my specifications & the lettuce/onions etc were in perfect proportions to compliment the taste of the burger without overpowering it. My husband had the fish tacos and he thought they were wonderful, with mango and purple cabbage slaw! I also ordered a Chardonnay and it was a quality wine & great accompaniment to the meal. We will definitely be back!

This was my first time at this Batson River location and I can say it's almost the same as the other location. Menu is fairly the same and had plenty of options. My go to is the wings with a side of the sweet chili sauce. Our server was fantastic as she kept checking in on us and made sure we were set. The location was nice and had outside dining, however it was fairly smaller than the other locations. I would highly recommend coming here!

Date night. Beautiful night to eat outside. Great location and is easy to drive to from Route 1. Plenty of parking and indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was very attentive and the menu was diverse enough to meet our dietary needs. I truly enjoyed the mushroom pizza and found it very flavorful. Full bar and local brew options. Intimate dinner or group outing, Batson River Fish Camp will work for you. We sat outside, but the inside had awesome decor. Check it out.

Really delicious Buffalo wings (some of the best I've had) and a decent lobster roll (get it cold with butter on the side for double the fun). Super cool "fish camp" vibe too. Comfortable seating, not terribly crowded on a Sunday afternoon, and great service. Would definitely go back over a lot of other places in the area.

Stopped in this seafood restaurant in wells after enjoying a few local breweries... we needed some food to share with our group. We sat at the Lao d bar and was greeted immediately by the friendly bartender. Cool local fishing gear throughout the restaurant, nets and motor equipment. Fun atmosphere. We enjoyed some pizza, crab fritters and garlic and chili wings .... All were very good... completely forgot to take photos:(

Batson River is the latter, and we loved our lunch outing in one of the adorable seasonal outdoor ice fishing sheds. We chose a few "handhelds," including the blackened haddock tacos and fried haddock sandwich, both of which are served with a red cabbage slaw. I enjoyed the tacos - the ratio of fish to slaw and aioli, etc. was just right. And the sandwiches are served with a generous amount of crispy French fries. On a weekday in March, many of the local shops and restaurants were closed. It was an unseasonably warm day, and we were happy to stumble upon Batson River for a fun and memorable lunch!

We had lunch here on Sunday, just after seeing Santa on the boat from the bridge down the street. Highly suggest putting your name in before you want to eat (it was about an hour wait when I put our name in at 11:45). Their reservation system sends you a text when they put your name on the list, and from the link they send you, you can also check your position on the list. They text you when your table is ready. When we arrived with our dog to check in, we were given a couple of seating options in the outside heated deck area. We chose seats looking outside, which were topped with fur warmers, which made them comfortable to sit on. There are plenty of heaters on, which made it nice and cozy. Also, the plethora of Christmas decorations inside and out, made it also feel cozy, and festive. For lunch, I had the blackened fish tacos, which comes with mango pico, red cabbage slaw, chipotle aioli, cotija, on corn tortillas. They were super flavorful, and delicious. I stuck with fries, and they even had sour cream for dipping them. We will absolutely be back to try more of the menu!

One of the…read morebiggest draws was their $1 tastings, yes, just one dollar for a taste of their ciders, wine and spirits, which is really fun and makes sampling without commitment super easy. The service was great, our server, Courtney, was exceptionally friendly, helpful in guiding us through the selection, and made the whole experience relaxed and enjoyable. I want to note, as a point of context, that in September the production facility of Sweetgrass's main operation in Union suffered a devastating fire. Despite that, the Portland tasting room remains open and functioning, which is a testament to their resilience. On the tasting side the variety was solid, and the $1 price point made it easy to try a bunch of things. The ambiance is cozy and inviting. If I were to pick one improvement, I'd say the tasting pours felt a bit light compared to some other spots I've been to....not a complaint, just an observation given the price point and expectations. In all, Sweetgrass is a strong pick if you're looking for a laid-back, local winery/distillery stop in Portland with friendly staff (shoutout to Courtney) and wallet-friendly tastings.

Keith has been in the alcohol business since 1992, and he earned his MS degree in Food Science and Enology. Constance has been called the heart, soul and brains behind the business. She spends most of her time in the fields, gardens and barns that produce the various ingredients used for making their wine and spirits. Sweetgrass is Maine's first farm winery & distillery; using over 70,000 pounds of Maine-grown fruit and grain each year. The distilled spirits are hand crafted in old world tradition with a copper alembic, still capturing the full flavors of their gin, rum, and traditional apple brandy. A secondary tasting room and retail shop opened on historic Fore Street in the Old Port section of Portland in February 2014. In September 2025, a debilitating fire destroyed the Union facility. The Old Port location remains open, but the future of the Union location remains uncertain. My extended family and I visited Sweetgrass's Portland location this past summer while we were vacationing in Maine. While exploring Old Port, we walked past their window and I said, "Hey, this looks like a cool place!" We went inside and signed up for a tasting. For just $10, customers can choose any five wines, ciders or spirits to taste. The five that I chose included "Maine Hard Imperial Cider" (Dry Cider), "Blueberry Smash" (Semi-Sweet Dessert Wine), "Back River Gin", "Cranberry Gin", and "Apple Brandy". The latter was easily my favorite of the tasting, but unfortunately they had no more bottles for purchase. I plan on ordering some online in the future. I am so happy that I discovered the Old Port tasting room by chance. I felt really bad when I learned later on that the Union location burned down. I'm happy to hear that no one was hurt and I hope that they are able to rebuild.
