Second time I have had the honest and super experienced Mr. Felipe Rivas to my home to fix roof leaks caused by recent rains. Felipe made an appointment to come by, made a thorough assessment of the problems and sent me a proposed price to do the work when the rain ceased. It was a reasonable cost for the work of removing roof tiles in two places and replacing the underlying membrane then resetting the tiles. He cleaned the gutters and addressed another issue. The workers were careful, tidied up and did the job efficiently. But most important is the confidence I have that the job is done and done well. No more leaks. We received a quote for $29,000.00. They only gave us a price on what they thought was what we needed for our new roof. They quoted their price on a Cool Roof and removal of the existing roof, among other additional construction needed. We were told by other professionals that a new roof could be installed without removal of the existing roofing. We told them we don't need a Cool Roof. I requested that we we discuss this because the quoted price was beyond our budget. We haven't heard back as of yet,but that was weeks ago. So, our point is, if you want them to do your roof, you'll need to accept their price and not question otherwise. Good luck. read more

I received what I thought was a fair estimate to repair my roof, so I hired them. Initially I asked about the repair process and made some requests. This seemed to irritate Felipe Jr. I agree with other reviewers, who stated how difficult it was to get a call returned. At one point, I thought they were avoiding me via caller ID, so I called from a different number and sure enough they answered right away! When the crew came out to do the work, I respectfully observed them. When Felipe Jr came over to collect the check, he told me that the man doing the repair was furious with me for watching him work. He then came at me by saying, "Are you a roofer?!" I was shocked at his tone of voice and anger but tried to stay calm. I said I meant no disrespect, I just wanted to be an informed consumer. I am so impressed with this company. My neighbors were getting their roof done while they were out of town. The old roof was removed and the new one installed in just two days. The mess was minimal and all workers very polite and considerate. Not only do they work fast but the quality of craftsmanship is apparent on the new roof. Fast response, Solid repair job, Would use again! I recently used Rivas Roofing to repair a hole in the roof and to replace some damaged vents from the recent storm. I called their office on a Tuesday to request an estimate and was able to have Felipe come out to the house that Friday. I contacted Rivas back in August when I thought I had enough money for a new roof...they came by and gave me an estimate...turns out I didn't have enough money...I figure I got about 7 estimates on my roof, and while Rivas wasn't the lowest, they were reasonable...and when I called them again in March, there were no formalities, no talk of "That was the price in August..." Felipe Jr came by, I picked out some shingles and within a few days they were over here tearing the roof off the sucker...they were clean, thorough and efficient...and our new roof is fantastic...I recommend Rivas Roofing, they are truly as good as it gets! read more

What a great company! Felipe Sr. came out to our home, he actually climbed to our second story roof (many companies "forgot their ladder" when they came to provide a bid), and accurately and honestly identified the problem. We thought we needed a new roof, but he said we just needed to fix the problem that was causing the leak. His bid was comparable to a few other reasonable bids (while many other companies' bids were thousands of dollars higher), but he and his son were so pleasant to interact with and they did a wonderful job showing up on time, cleaning the roof while they were up there (and it was a mess from a huge pine tree), and even doing a few extra things for no additional charge. Unfortunately very poor service and follow up. Rivas roofing did a repair that they said we needed and roof started leaking a few months later. Diagnosis on problem was unclear . They came back out and gave a couple of different options on how to stop the leaking. Was told I would get a estimate and the work could be done I two weeks. I called several companies to get quotes for a new roof before finding Rivas Roofing here on Yelp. We've had some bad experiences with remodeling and other household repairs, so we're a bit jaded about the promises that get made by these companies about the quality of their work, what they charge vs. the value delivered, the promised oversight and presence of their project managers during the project and the behavior of their employees while on site. Rivas Roofing was a sharp contrast to other poor experiences we had, and they were the most honest, most straightforward and most fairly priced of all the roofing companies I met with. I initially met with Felipe Rivas, Jr., who answered all my questions and was highly responsive during the pricing phase. He followed through on everything, including start date and times, prices, process, materials requested, etc., exactly as he said he would. When the work began, I also met Felipe Rivas, Sr., who is as knowledgeable as he is kind and professional. Between father and son, these two have decades of experience in roofing, and it shows. They finished our roof in about half the time they said it would take. To top it off, their team was polite, focused and efficient. They went out of their way to minimize the mess and be respectful of both our property and those of our neighbors. Over the years I have used Rivas Roofing and they have always provided excellent service at a fair price. At my request they gave me an estimate for roof repair which I found again to be fair. During the past two weeks I have called their office three times to speak with the owner to set up a time for them to do the work. On each occasion I was promised a call back but never received one. I have a small house and I waited about half a year before they could come out, but it's worth the wait. I initially contacted them from yelp because they are local in altadena, and the owner Felipe came out very soon and gave me a few estimates on different options to go about replacing the roof and the different assemblies. He seems like a trustworthy and likeable guy. I have a very flat pitch and the house is mid century with open beams, so there's no insulation and it gets extremely hot whenever the ambient temperature is above 80F. I received the estimates within a week I believe. By then it was the middle of summer so I decided to wait till it cools off a bit before getting the roof project done. When I asked them about availability in the fall, I was surprised to find out they are still several months out. Then winter rolls around and the rains started coming. Even though there's no leak yet I am concerned that I will get leaks soon, because the previous strong wind blew off the asphalt shingles (which is a wrong system anyway) and I started to see a lot of dry rot on the eaves and water damage from the last winter storm. There was this week which we had a good 3-4 consecutive days of rain, and I called Felipe and his son came out the very next day, in the rain, to put up plastics on my roof. They didnt even request a deposit or payment of any kind. The plastic made me and my wife feel a lot better during the winter rains, and we are very grateful for this gesture. But eventually the strong wind blew off the plastic and we finally got our first slow leak near the fireplace. Thankfully we got through winter without more leaks in the house, and when spring rolls around Rivas roofing finally found a window to fit my project in. On the first day, Mr Rivas covered up my living room with plastic (very nice gesture) to minimize the amount of debris during tear off inside the house. I cannot tell his age exactly, but he is an old man and he went up to the roof with the young guys to do the tear off himself. I was pretty impressed with how hardworking he and his crew is. Over the course of 2 1/2 days, the guys always show up on time, clean off the areas around the house at the end of the day, working non stop and always willing to answer any questions that I have. They also replaced the damage wood and fascia boards without additional cost. I was extremely happy that the project was done in just 2 1/2 days, not to mention the huge improvement that i can feel immediately. I only made payment after the job is done! all the while they didnt request any deposit, payment or upfront fees for materials etc. The highly reflective roof and radiant barrier is amazing. Generally on a 80-90F day, I cannot live without the AC on past 1pm (indoor temp about 84F). On a 95-105F day, the house would have AC on the whole day and the temp would still linger at 86F. After the roofing replacement, wow...the ceiling feels cool to the touch! It hasnt really gotten hot yet but I have been turning on the AC in the past 2 weeks already, because my house would be 83F while the house outside is around 90F. With this new roof, I dont feel the need to turn on the AC at all since it's a cool 70-74F throughout the day. I am pretty sure I still need to rely on AC when the 105F day comes around in the summer, but I am excited to see how much the cooler house is with this new roof. I can already see a huge improvement. Despite the long wait, the experience I had was a crew of hardworking guys who knows what they are doing...Felipe and his son are genuinely nice people and takes pride in their work. The price is fair and the duration is short, making the least disruptions to my day to day life, and it's great to know we have such a great company so close to your home...that you know you will be taken care of in the future should you need any roofing assistance. Good luck getting them to even return phone calls. I called them to replace some roof tiles - "I'll have someone call you back today" - a week later - no call. I called back and got the same response - "I'll have someone call you today". That was three weeks ago. I guess they have so much business, there's no need for follow up. I live in a 250+ home community where we share vendor referrals through a shared website. Rivas will not be on that list. read more

Felipe and crew did a tile roof for me and I believe finished up in September of 2002, and while searching for a roofer today, pulled one of my checks from that time and discovered they are still around. They did an outstanding job, that was reasonably priced at the time. It still looks very good. So, am looking for a roofer for a condominium that we own. We have a beautiful new roof thanks to the good work from Rivas Roofing. They had to remove our old, damaged, Cal Shake roof. They repaired the dry rot damage, installed all new plywood, underlayment, then Landmark TL Fiberglass shingles, new flashings, etc. It was a messy, big job but the workers were cheerful and pleasant to have around. Filipe Rivas, Jr. is great to deal with! After a rain we noticed a leak in our guest house roof. I checked with neighbors and one highly recommended Rivas Roofing. Filipe Jr. immediately returned my call and came to look at the job the next day. He felt the roof still had some life left on it, so he suggested some patching. He gave us a fair estimate and said they could complete the job within a month. I was a little panicked because of the big el Nino threat and asked if they could possibly do it sooner. About a week later Filipe called me to say his guys could come out the next afternoon. They were at our house working hard for 3 hours and cleaned up completely after themselves. Mr. Rivas came out twice to go over everything to give our estimate. After having several roofers over, we chose Felipe, Sr, and Jr. because of their many years of experience and know-how, and there ability to give us direct and timely communication and care through the entire process. He found a 2 day window and we agreed for that as it was 4 weeks ahead of schedule. The men did a fantastic job and gave special attention to some roof repair in the back as well.
