I bought my house in Sherman Oaks in 1997 and while I was out of town on work for a couple months…read moreshortly after moving in, El Nino hit. Fortunately, my garage (which was storing much of what I had that wasn't in the house) was the only thing that suffered damage, Unfortunately, most of my mementos were destroyed. I reroofed, and now almost 30 years later, with rumors are that El Nino is making a return visit, I thought (since we had suffered minor leaks during some of the recent rains) it was time to reroof, so I put Yelp to work to find me some people to interview. I picked five for the information I could glean, asking few questions, since I knew opening my mouth connected to a brain that knows little about roofing, would be a bad idea and also seeing if people were helpful with their explanations. Everyone (maybe except one) was personable enough for me to think I could work with them, but much of the information was kinda the same thing (although I noted some improvements in roofing since 97 that were useful to ask each about). The prices were more or less the same, and close enough that I knew I could find a point that would be roughly around the general price for them all, so it wasn't money. It was rapport and ultimately who gave me the greatest sense of trust. And. I learned, information that no one else told me. Roy, with Top Roofing was the ONLY one of the five that I saw who discussed the solar pool heating on my roof with me; each of the people I met with went on the roof. Not one other person mentioned it, and if you have solar panels on the roof - it's a consideration in doing the job. When I called the others who'd come to the house to say I'd made my choice and asked why I picked someone else I told them this - it was determinative that one person told me this was a job that needed to be done in addition to the roofing. He hooked me up with a solar heating company, he'd worked with before and I got on the phone with them and felt reasonably satisfied that between them and Roy it would get done on time, on budget. (It's not a small add-on to have them remove and reinstall the works, so if this affects you, be warned). Roy stayed in touch with me throughout - He came by and we spoke on phone daily. We had agreed that in the cost we he would completely replace and repaint a tongue-and-groove porch which was pretty rotted out) and aside from some permit forms I had to fill out, gave me a date of less than a week every date was kept. His crew was punctual, and so neat - the pool was covered, they cleaned up each of the five days they worked. Roy walked the yard with me before they started so I could make sure my gardener trimmed where he needed to, then walked it again, to tell me where we might need to keep trimming. He touched base with me every day, and when it was over gave me a video of the roof (both the main house and the garage were reroofed), and the porch which looked haggard now looks beautiful. I can't say enough about what a positive experience this was. And it looks really good. And since the last time I put on a roof, the tile now cools down the exterior which is good to have in an LA summer. The roof is up, the solar heating is back in operation. Let's go. A roof is an expensive proposition, and I think it's ok to know little if you hire someone you believe in (and, I'll admit, test out a little bit at the onset), who speaks to you in a way that is helpful and doesn't overwhelm you, but I think this was an incredibly positive experience in terms of labor, cleanliness, schedule and most importantly communication. The whole process was easy and exactly what you'd expect from a good roofing company. They showed up exactly when they said they would, did a wonderful job and cleaned up before they left. One odd thing is, when I scheduled, they asked if the would be seeing both my husband and I or just me; I find this a strange question as what if I wasn't married? It is awfully assumptive to think I had to have a husband, but I digress. Noah was scheduled to perform the inspection. He was running a bit late and called about 5 minutes after our scheduled time letting me know he ran into some traffic and would be about another 5 minutes or so. He showed up 20 minutes later and it was the oddest thing, he parked in my driveway. When he came up to the door he asked if it was okay and I said okay, but honestly, I found it really strange and just didn't want to prolong the appointment. Upon inspection, he seemed very knowledgeable and personable and did a pretty thorough inspection taking pictures and videos of the roof and surrounding areas. As mentioned, I am the type to obtain multiple quotes, so I expected that after he did the inspection, we would go over his findings and a few days later I would receive a quote. After he did the inspection, he showed me a video of something the other roofers didn't, which was nice as I like a thorough job, but then said he would be in touch with a quote. I received a phone call a few days later asking to discuss findings, but when I called back, I got an AI bot which was then followed up by a call back from a real person. Oddly enough, when they called, they literally said nothing. They asked if it was a good time to talk and I said yes but they wanted to talk when "my husband was around." Even though I said it was a good time, they said they would call back. I followed up via Yelp message. It has been over a week and I have yet to receive any quote from them. While he initially came across as genuine, personable, and competitively priced, his lack of competence, integrity, and professionalism surfaced almost immediately. In reality, Joseph operates as a solo middleman who subs out the entire job to third-party crews. --- Upcharges & Shady Payment Requests --- The problems started on day one of demo. Even though the roof was only a single layer of shingles, the tear-off took a few extra hours due to adhesive on the substrate--something he had the opportunity to inspect beforehand. Rather than owning field conditions, he dumped the extra cost on me. When I tried to meet him halfway and split the difference, he threw a fit and refused. On top of that, he pleaded with me to pay his demo sub directly in cash to "help him out." In hindsight, having the homeowner pay his sub directly was a massive red flag regarding his cash flow and business practices. --- Fighting the Contract & Playing the Martyr --- Joseph fought me on clear terms throughout the build and resented basic accountability: Fascia Boards: The contract explicitly stated replacement fascia boards would be primed, but he pushed back with heavy resistance and grumbling when asked to do it. Quality Control: When his crew installed a visibly cracked fascia board, asking him to replace it was treated like an impossible chore. Basic Code Compliance as "Favors": Whenever he was caught missing something standard--like the low pitch of my roof actually requiring two layers of underlayment felt instead of one by code--he acted like fixing his own oversight was doing me the biggest personal favor in the world. Ego Over Accountability: Any time I held him to the contract or questioned his workmanship, his go-to condescending response was: "Are you the roofer or am I the roofer? Who has 30 years of roofing experience?" --- Scare Tactics to Dodge Inspections --- For an attached carport flat roof replacement, he used scare tactics to talk me out of calling for a final city inspection. He claimed the carport might not be permitted and warned it could lead to fines or being forced to tear it down--an obvious attempt to prevent an inspector from checking his work. --- Leaks, Excuses, & Cut Corners --- The ULTIMATE failure was that the brand-new roof leaked around a replaced skylight, damaging the drywall on my ceiling. Dealing with him on warranty repairs was a nightmare: Laughable Excuses: Instead of properly inspecting the flashing, he made absurd claims like "dirt and dust can make a roof leak", blamed mystery people walking on the roof and the directional wind of recent rain events. (laughing out loud as I write this) Band-Aid "Fixes": He insisted the installation was fine and tried to just smear a bead of caulk on top of the shingles. Anyone knows exposed surface caulk is a lazy band-aid, not a watertight repair the solves the underlying issues of a poor install. Evading Responsibility: He actually tried to bargain his way out of repairs, asking: "If I fix the skylight, will you take care of the drywall damage inside?" Shorting Materials: After I refused his surface caulk fix, he finally brought a roofer back out to pull up the shingles and fix the flashing underneath. Talking directly with the crew made it clear what happened: Joseph had shorted them on materials from the start to pad his own profits. --- WARNING --- Do not fall for the friendly sales pitch or the low bid (not that he was a screaming deal). Working with Joseph was an emotional rollercoaster and brought nothing but ongoing stress for me, my wife, and young children. Joseph brought constant pushback on contract terms, cut corners on scope, treated basic compliance like charity, and took zero ownership when his work failed. Out of the 4 days of work done, On is pretty much there every day to inspect and verify proper work is done by the crew. When the crew do finish their work at the end of each day, there is NO mess left behind in the house/garden. Everything is cleaned up and nearly placed by the wall.
