Due to some procrastination on my part, I was in a rush to have my garage re-roofed to appease my homeowners insurer. I had a 33 year old wood shingle roof with multiple leaks that could not endure another rainy season. I got about 4-5 estimates before I called Benefit Roofing whose owner, Alan, came out a few days later. He impressed me immediately as he saw details that none of the other roofers noticed. He pointed out that we had a layer of asphalt roof under the wood shakes, which I wasn't aware of. He also saw that there was a seam where the addition met the existing part of the house which wasn't level and would require some adjustments. These were important details that no one else saw and would affect the cost as well as the duration of the job. Alan was the only roofer who inspired my confidence based on his great reviews, attention to detail and responsiveness. His prices were fair and there were no surprises as he's very thorough. Our job was complicated as we have an unusual, pitched roof with lots of nooks and crannies. We also were replacing our rooftop air conditioner at the same time as the re-roof. The A/C required a custom built platform that took a few months to manufacture. This required a great amount of patience as there were numerous delays. For years I lived with small, but very consistent leaks coming down from the ceiling during every rainy season. It turned out that I had a 20+ year old, very poorly installed shingle roof that allowed for water leaking over so many years causing severe wood damage. So I took the calculated risk of choosing Benefit Roofing over bigger, more established roofing companies and that decision paid off well. I'm glad that I contracted Benefit Roofing to repair extensive wood damage and replace the entire roof over my home plus the detached garage roof. It was a pleasure working with Alan who both owns the company and personally manages his projects. His communication was very prompt, very detailed, and responses were always immediate. His crew always showed up early every day and completed the job ahead of schedule. Overall, the job required roof demo of 2 layers of old shingle roof, extensive plywood/plank repair and replacement, extra wood beam support installed under the roof in sinking areas, two inspections and permit clearances from the city, installation of new roofing and vents, replacement of several flashings, painting of repaired planks, and probably more that I cannot think of at the moment. This was all completed in 6-7 days, including two days of no work due to city permitting and a weekend break. To finish this whole process in 5 days of work is unbelievably great. As I do with every home repair job I contract out, I gathered at least 3 estimates prior to making a decision: Roof Repair Specialist, Benefit Roofing, and America's Best Roofing. After some cost-benefit analysis on all 3 quotes, Benefit Roofing was the way to go. Roof Repair Specialist compared similarly in services and wood repair included as well as with first-impression professionalism, but they were priced much higher. America's Best Roofing estimate compared similarly in pricing, but the warranty, services, and wood allowance (none included whatsoever) were subpar and their salesman came up with all kinds of excuses justifying that it was somehow going to save me money that their included services came up short. So the only risk I took with Benefit Roofing was going with a smaller, less reviewed company. But like I said, my decision to go with them paid off well. I share this part of the process because you will probably come to a similar crossroad with your roofing job if you care to weigh your options and are working within a budget. As I also do with every review I post for home contractors, in fairness I need to objectively include any hiccups along the way. I had recently installed new pavers in my backyard and was concerned about damage or stains that would be caused by the job. I was assured that the pavers would be covered with tarp to prevent any of this from happening. The tarp only ended up covering the pavers on the first day of the job and by the end, some tar stains got on the pavers. Upon letting Alan know, he immediately brought out his crew to come clean it up just fine. As I've said in other reviews, what's more important than the mistake made is how it is remediated. This was a mishap that I assume would've happened with any other roofer I hired, but I can't be sure anyone else would fix the issue as fast and responsibly as they did. From the start of the job to the end everything they did was done with a level of excellence. Everyday they would clean up and in my book that says a lot. After the last day of work he sent another guy to repaint a t-top and a pole that was in a different brown so that the browns would match I hadn't even noticed that! Finally, swept up the garage that was not done because I had locked it prior. He will not be the cheapest and was not the most expensive. Benefit Roofing replaced our flat roof on February 2020, right after a period of heavy rain.  Alan came out, measured the roof, and within 24 hours provided us with a detailed proposal for our roof, including all necessary materials and warranties. We liked his approach best (out of the 4 other estimates we received) and decided to go ahead with his company. We had about three layers of roofing materials and four different leaks in our 26 year old roof, and we knew we should not postpone the job any longer. We were scheduled to start the following Monday, however another unexpected rain was on its way. Alan followed up with us, letting us know that the rain forecast was not looking good. The field workers came out on that Sunday afternoon to cover the roof prior to the job starting. That was such a relief! To find a good contractor is a task, but to find a contractor that will have two employees cover my roof on a Sunday afternoon, that's a totally different story. Back to the roof - the plastic covering held great and the guys were back early on Tuesday to start the job. Man, this job is hard! They were six guys up there and it took them about ten hours to clean it all up (Yes, that's A LOT of trash). They came back the next day, replaced some damaged wood and started installing the new roof. Overall it took them about 4 days (including inspections) to complete the job for our home.
