Since my last review over five years ago, Uncle James has helped me with an AC leak diagnosis, engine and transmission mount replacements, front and rear brake pads and rotors, a tune-up when my car was bogging, an alternator replacement, radiator replacement (because I cracked it trying to do the alternator myself), and now a transmission filter replacement. Pretty much every major maintenance or repair on my car has been done here, unless it was something I handled myself at home (the only exception being my CV axles that I saw Uncle Alan for at Kaimuki Auto). I'm incredibly thankful for Uncle James and the team for consistently delivering quality work at genuinely fair prices. I recently spent months doing drain-and-fills on my transmission fluid due to slippage driving uphill and hesitation between gears after cold starts. By the third drain, it became obvious the fluid wasn't improving at all. There's a common myth that transmission fluid lasts the "lifetime" of the car, but the reality is, it often doesn't. Just like ignoring oil changes, neglecting transmission fluid can eventually lead to serious (and expensive) repairs. In many cases, transmission work can cost even more than engine repairs. So here I am, trying to address the issue the best way I can. I won't lie, part of me hates that my car is now at the stage where issues pop up once or twice a year. Financially, though, buying a new car just isn't in the cards right now. Uncle James makes it possible for me to keep my car running safely and affordably while I work toward that next step, and I'm sure many others in the community feel the same way. This last time with the smog check, I went to him because my aunt and uncle have always gone to him and they told me he did smog checks for $25. This is what others I have gone to have charged. I roll up to his shop and say "smog check?" I'm pretty sure I mentioned $25. He proceeds and it was quick. Then he says, "$40". I didn't quibble because I am short on time and for the most part talking to him as been decent as opposed to another shop I've gone to where I feel like I'm gonna get some attitude for a simple smog check. I would gladly tolerate a little grumpiness and have my vehicle fixed right the first time than take it to a shop of friendly employees over and over again because the people working there that lack level of expertise at C&S A little grumpiness is temporary but a bad repair job last forever. It is easy to find a cheaper and cleaner repair shop but the owner at C&S knows what and where every thing is. So there I was at Lanikai Juice in Kahala and when I turn my car on I see the battery light and the…read morebrake light go on. I think, "uh oh, something huge is going to happen soon." But my car is still going so I think maybe this big thing will happen....oh, I don't know...maybe next week sometime? I get on the freeway and exit on the Wilder cutoff. But the time I'm in front of Punahou School my car is dead. Like all the way dead. I suspect it's my alternator, but I think, "Hasn't it only been a couple of years?" Well, I look it up and in fact it has been almost exactly 3 years. I look up how long an alternator is supposed to last and it says 80k - 150k miles. Hm. I calculate in my head and realize my average rate of driving is about 25k miles, so I've probably driven about 75k miles or more in the time since I last replaced my alternator. So sad. I call my regular mechanic and they are not open because it's like 700 pm on a Friday night. Sigh. I call my dad and he says I should try calling Mr Wong at C & S Auto. I leave a message and Mr Wong calls me back and tells me to bring the car in on Saturday as early as possible; he'll be there from 700 am, and the shop closes early (I think that meant 200 pm). In the morning I call AAA and they tow my car. Tiffany comes out to meet me and tell the tow truck driver where to put the car. I talk with Mr Wong and Tiffany and tell them what I think and what happened. They hook up my car and away we go. By 100 pm my car is done. On SATURDAY! I don't have to rent a car to get to work, either. It cost about $550 and they replaced my alternator and belt. Bomb! They don't seem to have a waiting room or anything but it's definitely within walking distance to Ward and all that has to offer. It's a smallish shop but these guys definitely seem to know what they're doing and they're so nice! Can't beat that! We usually go to a mechanic in Waipahu that we really like but having a mechanic near my house and is open on Saturdays is awesome. And the customer service was fab! So if you're looking for a mechanic in the town area who is reasonable and trustworthy, check out Mr Wong over at C & S Auto. They're conveniently located just off Ward on Ilaniwai, and you're bound to have a favorable experience too!
