I happened across Rite Aid's El Segundo's Grand Ave. location because I couldn't find parking in the area to meet some friends next door at The Standard Station Sports Bar & Grill, and my Catholic guilt got the better of me. I always made it a habit whenever I parked at a business I initially had no intention of visiting, I would go inside and make a small purchase as a sort of "payment" for parking on their premises. Now that my conscience was cleared, I quickly reflected on the company's recent bankruptcy filing news. The company that took over Thrifty's decades ago was now on its seemingly last legs. I've had fond memories of both companies, so this visit was kind of bittersweet. Was I all right with this particular location before its demise!? PURCHASE Resse's Pretzels Miniature Cups 9.9oz Bag ($5.99): I was a fan of all the yummy sweets throughout the Reese's brand, so when I saw this in the nearly-empty Halloween candy section, I grabbed it because it sounded good and it was the last one so it looked sad there all by itself. Once I finally tore this bag open and shared it with my friends, each tiny cup was packed with crunchy pretzel pieces covered with smooth peanut butter and delectable chocolate. I saw one employee serving Thrifty's Ice Cream, one cashier, and one other employee stocking the shelves. All was good! PARKING (FREE) Located within the Grand Park Plaza, they were on their own standalone corner and had their own private lot with a ton of spots - 'nuff said. ATMOSPHERE, DÉCOR, AMBIENCE A medium-sized building that was clean and organized inside with easy directions and labels for each section along with spacious aisles. The pharmacy was at the very back, the refrigerated and frozen coolers also along the back and side walls, the ice cream counter up front close to the registers, and a surprisingly assorted well-stocked liquor section. A decent amount of natural lighting came through the front glass windows and doors while plenty of soul-sucking fluorescent electric ceiling lights covered the rest. And, they still had Thrifty's Ice Cream, so buy it now while you could! Honestly, I had no idea how long this location would be around since the bankruptcy, so I wished them the best. The prices may be a touch higher due to convenience and economies, and you may not find all the brands out on the market but possibly lesser-known ones. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (TOTAL paid experience was around $6.00 BEFORE any discounts and/or tip). This is a go-to for specific things: a flu shot, basic medicinal supplies, vitamins, birthday cards, basic cosmetics and grooming supplies, candy, seasonal items (i.e. Christmas lights), and of course the ice cream (the bygone Thrifty store used to be the go-to for cheap scoops). Sadly, the store's shelves are emptying and Rite Aid looks like it will the way of 99 cents store. Sad. read more

We've been going to this Rite Aid Pharmacy for a long time & never had a problem. Today I went to pickup a prescription in the early afternoon & the cashier at the pharmacy was so rude & she had NO Customer Service skills. She really had an attitude & when I went to the window she looked like she was not having a good day. When you work with customers you need to show that you do care a little bit specially being at the pharmacy. Not sure what happened to Joy, who was there most of the time & she was such a "Joy" when she spoke & asked for info about the patient picking up prescription. Whoever this person was she needs to chill & be more caring with customers. Management needs to discuss this issue with them. Sorry I didn't see her name to mention here. What kind of a pharmacy doesn't have distilled water? Their shelves seem to just be filled with soda. I think. I never can find what I want there. Also, every time I come to this pharmacy to fill up my water bottles and my water tank at the primo machine there's a big truck in the way usually I wouldn't mind but the guy who is supposedly the manager told me his name was Jonathan. Who knows If that's the truth I wouldn't give my name out if I had his attitude. Tells me it's going to be hours before the truck moves in a tone that said tough s*** if you don't like it. Is rite aid really hard up for employees? Do they pay them nothing? How do they have people that are so horrible? There really should be a way to deduct Stars. read more

If your medication is important, avoid this pharmacy at all costs. The level of incompetence is staggering. The second (and last) time I used this pharmacy was not dissimilar from the first. After twice being notified that my medication was ready only to come in and find it was in fact not ready, I came in a third time and they said it was filled but they had "misplaced" it. I waited 30 minutes while 3/4 of the staff dug around for it and eventually just had my doc send the script elsewhere. read more

This store is redone inside since the last time I have been here (although it has been a while). Looks so much better. This is review is to praise a place that carries thrifty ice cream, the cashier who helped me right away and the fact they had every flavor available. That said, do not be silly, get the chocolate krunch. The only issue I have always had here, and still exists, is you will be asked for something/money outside. It does not bother me much but I can see someone getting bothered or uncomfortable and management should walk outside and address, with respect for all. Thrifty may not excite or resonate with the younger folks but I am so happy to get a nostalgic treat - still as delicious as being a kiddo. read more

The reason you're losing customers is because you're literally twice as expensive as everyone else and you piss off your customers. If an obviously 40 year old wants to buy NyQuil and doesn't have ID on them and you turn them away because it's "your policy" they'll just go buy it for less at Walgreens because they at least have logic. They also have a good selection of anything you need for your first aid supplies & cough/cold/flu/headache medicine. Perfectly fine Rite Aid for getting snacks, drinks, health/beauty products and small household things. Hubby needed to use a restroom and I needed some skincare products and this store satisfied both our needs. Fair prices, stuff is easy to find, shelves are well stocked and the place is kept clean and well lit. Average part of town, not scary. Convenient parking and the place is well maintained. Worst customer experience ever. I purchased a pair of garden gloves, paid by ATM card. I want offered a receipt, and didn't think too much of it. I literally walked out of the door and realized they were the wrong kind. I didn't even get to the parking lot. The guy that was next on line behind me was just finishing up his transaction. I stepped up and and said I needed to return the item. The cashier looked me in the eye and asked if I had the receipt. I said I was just here 3 minutes ago. You didn't offer me a receipt, so maybe it's on top of your trash can. She didn't even look. Just said "Well I would have torn it up". Then said she can't refund the whole amount if I don't have the receipt!!! I was shorted over $2. What a great racket. Just moving to El Segundo, but already know where not to shop. I love that it's a small town convenience/drugstore & everyone knows each other except for us newly transplanted folks still trying to blend in. And that the ice cream is Thrifty brand & delicious! But the annoyance of the restrictions w/purchasing alcohol/ID is a bit way too extreme (For one, we look our ages - over 50) but I get they need to be across the board w/it, but if I'm holding it for my husband and he's paying, they have refused to sell to us unless I too provide my ID? Really? What difference doesn't make if I'm holding or putting the beer or wine on the counter for him? (If he's carrying a lot in his hands or basket) & what are the actual restrictions on carding these days - under 50 or under 90? But that's not why I rated it two stars, its more for the annoyance of solicitors that have took permanent residence every day - I do believe in giving, but they are there every day/night especially this ES location and feel bad having to dodge every time. I don't go anymore (by myself, I prefer Walgreens- no solicitors & they don't harass u about your ID for alcohol- meaning if I'm holding for hubby & he's paying-his ID) unless I'm w/the husband, he's persistent on saying no. I believe in passing it forward to others, different charities or people in need. I don't however, appreciate greedy people taking advantage ruining for all others in genuine need. Bad as those gypsies in bright orange-neon tshirts w/buckets at intersections asking for donations for funeral for a baby that doesn't exist - Scam artists...besides why not go to different stores or areas if it was genuine, just seems fishy & greedy when a cause like St Jude's or Children's Hospital could it more. When I told her that was not the brand I was looking for, she called someone else and that person never came. Why work retail if you're not willing to assist customers? The staff and interior of this Rite Aid are good, but I find myself going to Walgreens more often to avoid being hassled for donations by the guys outside the entrance. Most of the time I don't carry cash around, ant they make snarky comments if you don't give them something. That's not why I go to a drug store. read more

Great Ice Cream. I mean does it get better than Rite-Aid Ice Cream? A friend and I rolled up in here the other night for a Mint Chocolate Chip craving and we left very satisfied. This location is great with great employees. This location tends to be in the middle of no where and never packed. It is easy get in and easy get out with tons of parking. If you happen to live in EL Segundo, as I did for 7 years, there's a good chance that the Rite Aid at 220 Grand Avenue is your go to pharmacy; as it was for me. For me, it's all about location, location, location. And this particular Rite Aid is just a hundred yards off the main intersection of Grand & Main in "old town" El Segundo. And it doesn't get any more convenient than that. Even if I didn't use the pharmacy, the convenience of having a drug store within walking distance of my home was uber cool. I was a much fitter person living there, as I walked almost everywhere; but I digress. The staff here was always very friendly, the store hours were long enough that you could didn't have to worry about them closing super early, there was plenty of available parking and the neighborhood was super safe, as it was very near the police station. (Not than anyone ever feels unsafe here). It was the perfect venue if you needed a few items but didn't want to go to the grocery store. But the greatest thing I like about this Rite Aid is the Thrifty Ice Cream counter. Thrifty Ice cream is sold in many Los Angeles Rite Aids. They sell single, double and triple scoops of ice cream and are known for their "Iconic cylindrical scoop shape". To keep its ice cream customers coming back for more, their ice cream prices have remained very low throughout the years and as late as 1991, you could still get a single scoop for $0.35 cents. The ice cream is made "locally" in El Monte, CA so freshness is never an issue. Do yourself a favor and try a scoop of the chocolate malt crunch or the mint chocolate chip, and I guarantee you'll be a regular. The regular ice cream server, whose name escapes me, is a very nice guy who remembers most of his regular customers. And besides, who doesn't love ice cream; which is reason enough to come here. read more

Came through for some bathroom essentials - lotions, shampoo, etc... I also decided to look around the Wellness area to pick up some vitamins for some elderly relatives. I immediately decided against it when I saw how expensive they were. Definitely not the price I was used to. Don't let the BOGO free specials fool you. Even with that, most still cost 50-100% more compared to the likes of Target and Sam's. At least I got a bargain on the bathroom stuff. Plenty of parking but the lot tends to get packed/full during lunch since it's shared with a few eateries nearby. (Boy, was I glad I did the research beforehand!) read more

Yeah this is a dumpy old Rite Aid that needs a remodel. But it's a cornerstone of El Segundo. I don't know one single person that lives in El Segundo that doesn't come here for something or another. So me and my friend came in here last night to grab some late night snacks and a few other sundries. The isles are easy enough to navigate and they seem to have everything you could possibly need. They are pricey on some items but fair on others you just have to shop around. So why four stars....because they had my two favorite ice creams packaged and ready to go for only $2.50 each. SCORE!!! I was so excited....I scooped up a Chocolate Malted Crunch and a Coconut Pineapple and made a beeline for the checkout! How I love thee, Thrifty Ice cream!!! read more

So glad this location is getting a make over (under construction as of 02/01/15). Definitely was in need of an upgrade. But, with that being said, most of the staff is friendly, but not all. I think they are working on that as it's better than it was a few years ago. When they get the update completed, you won't find a better place to go for an inexpensive ice cream cone. They don't have a 100 flavors but the ones they have are very good and for less than $2, you can get a decent cone. Can't wait for them to get it done. But, in the mean time, they have great deal on their ice cream in the freezer. Chocolate Malted Krunch, awesome. They also have very good prices on wine and liquor if you can find your preference at the right time (sales seem to alternate monthly). Stock up when you find what you like. Since it's right in downtown El Segundo, they get a lot of locals and walk ins. The parking lot is shared with four other businesses but there always seems to be at least one spot. Of course, being a drug store, they have a pharmacy and we have had several prescriptions filled there, as well as annual flu shots. Efficient staff behind that counter and they will chat with you about the questions you may have about your Rx. Very glad they have this location right in town, very glad to see they are updating it. The pharmacy department in this Rite Aid is great! The pharmacist are knowledgeable and take time to explain things. However, this morning I just needed to buy milk and cereal. When I checked out the checker seemed kind of stern (maybe this is typical for being in the city)? After I paid, she handed me my receipt and said have a good day. I noticed that my groceries were still on the counter and not bagged. I said, "well, hold on, I'm sorry." I quickly took it upon myself to bag my groceries and she said, "oh that's no problem," instead of saying, "oh, I'm sorry I didn't bag them, let me get it for you." It made me feel stupid her tone insinuated that I should have known I needed to bag my own groceries. I have never had this issue at this Rite Aid before, though. The point is, it's not about who bags the groceries. I just didn't receive a nice and inviting tone from her. I will probably send my husband for now on so I can avoid her. read more

I had a concerning experience at the pharmacy yesterday. I was not offered a pharmacist consultation, but I specifically asked for one and asked if there were any side effects to the medication. The pharmacist said "this is actually one of the few medications that doesn't have any side effects at all." After consulting my doctor the day after, he let me know the medicine has very severe/common side effects and is a depressant. I do not trust this pharmacy to provide accurate information on my medication. read more

I usually just go straight to the pharmacy here, and I've had a pleasant experience with the pharmacists every time. When I call to order refills, the pharmacist is always friendly and helpful; and the same applies when I arrive to pick up my meds. There's never a long wait, even if there are several people in line. I get exactly what I need here (unless there's something wrong with my scrips, in which case they are happy to consult with my doctor's office) without hassle. The rest of the store is extremely well-organized, with every aisle's items clearly delineated. I once got ice cream from here and it was weirdly soft, but that's forgivable, because how often do I get ice cream there anyway? read more

I generally come here in the middle of the night for munchies or much needed miscellaneous items because it's literally a block or so away from me, easy to park, and get in and out quickly. One night I came in along with 2 other random White folks around 2am in the morning and the security guard followed me throughout the store. Really? I was very disappointed especially since the guard was an older Black man. Is this an El Segundo thing or does it just happen in this store location? I'm not a big fan of this location due to their small selection and limited product options. Plus I'm more of a CVS girl They do seem to be increasing their beauty line offerings for some reason...I guess that's their biggest selling section. However, their ice cream ain't half bad. Hits the spot every time. In fact I'll be stopping by tonight for some of their award winning I guess the ice cream grandfathered in when they switched to Rite Aid. read more

There is something that makes me uncomfortable about shopping at Rite Aid. Maybe it's their horrendous storefront design. Or it could have something to do with those bizarrely angled aisles. I don't know. I just don't like the place. That said, I still go there sometimes when I need to pick up something fast. Take the other night. I was on my way home from the office when I remembered I needed to pick up some bandages. And where do you go for Band-Aids? Why, Rite Aid, of course. Here was the plan: I'd grab a hand basket, find what I needed and be on my way. Why bother to grab a hand basket? Well, I didn't want people to think I was some kind of freak who just came to Rite Aid to buy bandages. I'd grab the bandages and then throw a few other random things into my basket on the way out: a toothbrush, a jar of Vaseline and maybe some sterile syringes. The only problem was, I couldn't seem to find the usual stack of hand baskets by the door. After looking around a bit, I finally asked a store clerk about the missing baskets. His reply: "Uh, I think everyone's using them right now." Oh. OK. Wait a minute. Everyone is using them? You mean to tell me there's not one hand basket available in the entire store? Not even behind the counter? Hm. That's odd. I revised my plan and made my way into the store, hand-basketless. After looking down just about every corridor in the maze that is Rite Aid, I finally managed to stumble upon the first-aid aisle. There they were: bandages as far as the eye could see (and possibly a little farther). I grabbed a box of 100 (you can never be too prepared) and followed the trail of bread crumbs I had left for myself to the front of the store. That's when I noticed something: Not one customer in the entire store had a hand basket. Almost everyone was awkwardly carrying their stuff around in their arms, just like I was. Well, everyone except this one nut-job who was actually using a shopping cart. In any case, when I got to the front of the store, there was a long queue to check out and only one register open. Once again, nobody was using a hand basket. Being the impatient person that I am, I angrily dumped all of my stuff in the Halloween aisle and drove to CVS. OK, I know what you're thinking: If I hate Rite Aid so much, why give it three stars? Well, they still sell Thrifty ice cream. And who doesn't like like a nice, cool, cylindrical scoop of that stuff every once in a while? Mm hm. Yeah, you know what I mean. read more

Pharmacy is never stocked with even the most common medications. They always have to give you a couple and then you have to go back the next day and get the rest. What a pain. Customer service is very inconsistent in the rest of the store. Totally dependent on who you happen to get. But nobody goes out of their way to be pleasant or helpful. A place you have to go to since they are the only drugstore in town unless you go over to Walgreens. But never an enjoyable experience. read more

I can't speak for all the other products and services since all I come for is the ice cream. The same Thrifty's ice cream they've had forever. My mom used to take me here almost every day after school, when it was still called Thrifty's, during grade school. 20 years later and I still find myself driving over at 9-10pm to get a scoop. You walk straight in, and the ice cream counter will be on your left. I love how they've kept all the same flavors. The mint still tastes the same as it did two decades ago. They still have the same chocolate malted crunch and sherbet. The parking lot is huge. It's never too crowded for ice cream. read more

This review is strictly based off my ice cream counter, experience - which Rite Aid should excel at given there longevity in the ice cream game. Unfortunately, they failed right off the bat when cake cones were nowhere in sight, and the scooper (aka a non-gloved Rite Aid employee) informed us they've been out of cake cones for a week. I accepted this as what I assumed to be a national cake cone shortage, but now I'm thinking it's just this specific store failing our free market economy. If I want to spend money on a cake cone, have a cake cone as an option for me to buy! My final complaint is on the ice cream frozenness, or better yet lack there of, at this location. It's ICE cream, not soft serve mush. On many occasion I've found this location to serve up a dessert with the consistency of overworked mashed potatoes, rather than a solid scoop of delicious mouth-heaven. You know what's worse than sorry-excuse-for-soft-serve in a cake cone? The same sad "ice cream" in a tiny sugar cone that just makes you wish this store would shut down and be replaced with a K-mart. Get it together, Rite Aid. Thrifty would be ashamed. read more
