Its a dive (Its a bonus star from me for that). The food is awful, but the service is friendly. The bar is small and filled with the people your mother warned you about. Its sort of a restaurant/bar during the day and at night the shutters roll up (Yes... Its at nine every night and its something to see) and it becomes one big Karaoke bar. On Tuesdays and Thursday they have a Tarot reader. A different one each night. So... in one night you can eat bad Chinese food, sing "We built this City" and get your fortune read. For a real good time disagree with every thing the reader says it can get quite humorous. read more

Come here if you like being insulted by the karaoke host. However, if you like to have a fun night of careless karaoke go elsewhere. Friday night started off well with plenty of seats available. Joel was our server and he took great care of us. Drinks were cheap and strong and the food wasn't gourmet but it wasn't terrible. I could have probably given 5 stars for the service but the karaoke host really ruined the night for the me and the majority of my group. First song I go up to sing goes smoothly. Yes, the karaoke host sang the lyrics in my ear the entire time which was irritating since I couldn't hear myself sing at all. I assumed the lyrics were up there for me to read and not for her to sing them to be verbatim. After an hour of waiting, she called a name that was close to my name but with my specific song choice. When I go up there to sing, she announces over the microphone to everyone in the bar that since I "changed my name" I have to go sit back down and that I'm not going to sing after all. Completely rude and uncalled for. Especially since I definitely wrote down my correct full name. So, I wait 3 hours without singing a single song until she realizes she made a mistake and she did read my name wrong after all so she apologizes. Okay, all was forgiven and she eventually called my name for another song. However, I guess she thought I was trying to change names again because she called my name up. I asked her to clarify if it was my name or my friend's name (her name was Diane). In her most condescending voice, in the microphone said "NO I SAID D-I-A-N-E You don't GET a second turn" My friends all gasped because of her rudeness. She wasn't just rude to me but several of my friends as well for no reason at all. So, I beg all of you karaoke lovers to go to Bush Gardens. The karaoke host is amazing and will treat you fairly and not be rude to you. And the layout at Bush Gardens is WAY better with an actual stage set up and a big screen where you can see the words and sing along. GO TO BUSH GARDENS. DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME HERE. read more

When I'm up on the north end, I HAVE to stop and indulge at the Rickshaw. After the unfortunate fire, they kept the same design/idea but updated the interior. Long gone is that stagnant Asian grease smell that permeated everything inside. The waitresses are fun to chat with, the food is on par for Americanized-Chinese, the drink menu has some damn good options and karaoke is always fun. I'm way too chicken to sing by myself but I'll sing along with the bar once the timing is right! I love this place so much that a taxi is needed every once in a while! Holy shit, this place is a hot, hot mess. On one hand, the food is terrible. Like, spectacularly bad. I don't know why they deliver -- if i had food that bad, I wouldn't want the whole town to know about it. On the other hand, this place is fucking magical when karaoke time rolls around. I haven't ever gotten up to sing there, because one time while I was there drinking a whiskey coke so strong it could have peeled paint off siding, this dude got up and sang "All By Myself" in this screaming, tortured voice, and he was writhing all over the place and you guys, that was the best karaoke moment I have ever witnessed. This place is terrifying, awesome, awesomely terrifying, and terrifyingly awesome. I can't go back but once every couple of months, because when I do, I end up getting belligerently drunk for twenty bucks and I have the worst well whiskey hangover in the universe. Fun place for karaoke nights! Sarah is the BEST server in Seattle and one of the main reasons I love to go here with my friends. She is super friendly, funny, and attentive to her guests...and I swear she never forgets a face. Even when the place is super busy we never have to wait on anything! The food here is awesome, don't miss out on the homemade dumplings or Chinese donuts -- yum! Happy hour food is great too and a good deal. Drinks are good although there have been a few times when they ran out of whatever the special is that night. I'll paraphrase some earlier reviews while adding a bit of my own personal thoughts in regards to The Rickshaw. The Greenwood/Bitter Lake/Aurora area is obviously not lacking on sub-par Americanized Chinese Restaurants, take your pick of the litter if that is your thing. That said, The Rickshaw is a bit of a different animal. To start out with. When you visit The Rickshaw for the first time, please try to remember it is not a Chinese family restaurant that happens to have karaoke. In reality, this much more likely resembles a karaoke dive bar that just happens to serve Chinese and American entrees. In fact, if you are sitting there for any length of time, you will very likely be asked to sing karaoke. Because it is a bar, you will likely see a few neighborhood regulars. You will probably at most times see a few people outside the front patio area/entrance smoking. There is usually ample parking if you do drive. I do think they could do well to make a patio area further out or away from the entrance to make it more inviting, but it isn't a concern of mine really. I've eaten there a few times and had more than my share of drinks. This being a karaoke bar, the food is obviously not something you will rave about, but I didn't find it completely un-appetizing either. The drinks are okay. The waitress I had one a recent visit was great and very personable, and this being at a booth away from main bar area. I've also had overall decent service saddled up to the main bar as well. You get the feeling this place has a lot of regulars, and if you come enough you could be one too. I can see Tuesdays (half price day) and the weekends being fairly busy days, though even being there on a Thursday night in the summer it was half full of what seemed like regulars singing karaoke. I'll go on to state, I am not steeped in the old pre-fire history of The Rickshaw some of you may read or hear about in other reviews; but since I want a decent, social, and over-all friendly neighborhood bar (that is un-like the weird un-social head stuck in phones variety you get in other areas of town) with a bit of 'dive' thrown in, and within walking distance of N. Greenwood area, this will fit the bill nicely. Just remember..'...nobody gets out of the place without singing the blues...' Update 6/7/08 ------------------------------- Watch out Ballard and Fremont! Greenwood is slowly on the way to becoming the next "yuppified" suburb of Seattle. The last three visits to the Rickshaw have sealed it......the Rickshaw may be the first indicator that the end is near. The 7 signs? -The locals and regulars have slowly dwindled to nothingness. -The remodel is dangerously close to clashing with the shtick. -There were 50 song slips in waiting by 11pm -The diversity of the clientele has been homogenized to the usual Seattle hip-ster scene (emo boys and tatted-rockabilly wannabees) -My God......the frat boys have made their way up from Fremont. -The crew has almost completely turned over. I am a true capitalist, so kudos to Ginger for taking steps to bring in more money. That being said, I fear this change won't go over well for old-time regulars like me. Goodbye, Rickshaw. You'be been there for me for over 10 years and I will miss the good times. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Okay, first off, Rickshaw just ain't what it use to be. It's been one of my favorite neighborhood watering holes for years, and bottom line: it's seen better days. The food seems to get worse every year, the turnover of friendly staff seems to get more frequent, and the masses of colorful Karoake stars has dwindled. Weekends can still get pretty busy, but weekdays can be total hit-or-miss. Don't get me wrong, the Rickshaw has never been much more than a local Karaoke dive bar with sub-par food, but it always had a kind of "dive-bar-charm" that can't really be explained. Drinks were always strong and cheap, the staff was well known, the place was always packed, and you knew you would run into someone you knew there. Nowadays, you're lucky if one of these is true for the night. It still has "dive" status, but I think it lost "ultra-dive" status somewhere around the time the smoking ban went into effect (but believe me, you can still smell almost 30 years of nicotine build-up the second you walk in the door!) After all this said, I still got much love for the Rickshaw. I try and make it over at least every couple of weeks and there are still a couple of bartenders and Karaoke hostesses that make it worth it. You'll still see some old faces around from time to time and the place will "rock" occasionally with the sounds of a packed house singing along with someone's horrid rendition of Jovi's "Wanted Dead or Alive". The food still leaves much to be desired, but I still crave some Rickshaw pot-stickers once and a while (and their omelettes in the morning are gargantuan and surprisingly tastey.......... but maybe that's just the hangover talking!) All in all, if you're in the 'hood, stop by the "Legend of Greenwood" that is the Rickshaw. Grab some pot-stickers and a gin and tonic and sing some Kool and the Gang and wonder why you would go anywhere else on a Friday night. read more

Wow! What a place! Can you say full wall of mirrors with cheesy furniture and booths from the 80's. Well I sure as heck can. The configuration of this place is kind of weird so large groups might have a tough time finding an area to sit all together. They have a huge list of songs to choose from to provide you and your friends endless hours of drunken singing. The lady who runs the karaoke stage is a hoot. She often sings along with the performers, yells out comments such as "put some feeling into it" and will play her tambourine in the background. You can tell she loves her job and making sure you put on a good show for the audience. This is a funky little dive bar to come with your friends to get some singing stage time in. I would definitely recommend having a drink or two before taking the mic though...a little liquid courage never hurts! read more

I was worried the first time I went here. Karaoke is not high on my list of things to be doing when the world ends, so I avoid it like the plague (although, I'd have less of a chance to avoid the plague if the world was actually ending, from what I understand...) and the invitation ended with an "Oh, but it will be fun!" so my skepticism instantly doubled. This is the part where the skeptical beginning is supposed to turn around into a surprise endorsement. BUT IT WON'T! OH, SNAP! This place is horrible. Like you'd only be happy here if you spent the rest of your life eternal in a pit of fire and brimstone. I've had some appetizers here, and a couple of drinks that were too expensive and not alcoholic enough. What i've had here that really stands out in my mind, though, is a bad time. Being invited to this place means I had at least one person that I knew. The occasions where I've shown up (both of them, because I decided in a fit of bad decision making to give this dump a second chance) there were many acquaintances of mine there. But, to my dismay, even being surrounded by the people I sometimes choose to hang out with could not insulate me from the Rickshaw. This place is bad like Stagger Lee. And not in the good way that Stagger Lee is bad, just to the same extent. The place just screams... well, sighs, actually, "LAZY." I go to a place to be lazy. I don't expect the wait staff, the entertainment, (add whoever decorated the place here), the kitchen, and the bartender to be sharing my laziness. They're at work. I'm not. SERVE ME! MAKE ME HAPPY! I'm paying you for the privelege of watching you slack and fail at restauranteering? SCOFF! PSHAW! I'll take my happy ass somewhere else, thanks. Hell, I'd rather pay to stay home than go here again. As you and everyone else in the city, county and state of north Seattle probably already knows: 1. Drinks are strong enough to peel paint off a wall. 2. Food is...eww. Not good. Not even when you have had a lot of paint-peeling drinks. 3. Karaoke is a blast here and people seem genuinely willing to just get up and have fun and make fools of themselves rather than "sing" as if there's a recording agent in the bar who will discover them. We have here a marriage of opposites, yet again. Lets take it in a list... 1) Food: Frightening. Anything that's not an appetizer I would caution against (the chicken satays, however, rock). 2) The Bar: These guys throw out the ounce rule for shots. If you order a drink here, you're getting a DRINK. Wear your big-boy pants, people, they mean bidnis. 3) Music: The karaoke runs the gamete of genuinely good to truly terrifying. There are a couple of regulars here that rock, and a couple that suck, but it evens out a bit. Patty, the lady that runs the deal... she is awesome. Beyond words, awesome. i can't help but chuckle over the fact that some one came here looking for some serious authentic chinese food...let alone singaprean food. if you were a true food snob like *points to self* moi, you would know this area is NOT the place to find it. i've said this in my reviews before, and i will say it again - knowing what your getting yourself into is half the battle. what this place, first and foremost, is an AWESOME dive bar with DELICIOUS AMERICAN (i wish yelp let me highlight, underline and bold AMERICAN) chinese food. real food snobs would understand american chinese and authentic chinese really belong in separate categories. the waitress tu, is a doll. when in doubt, ask the staff for recommendations. she helped me find a drink that was pure evil. a delicious, refreshing, concoction called beijing tap water that didn't taste anything like alcohol but had me buzzed in just a few sips. stiff drinks are always a plus in my book, but to not even taste the alcohol? ahh i think i'm in love! another bonus, the drink names are hilarious. and they have just the perfect type of food to sop up all that alcohol in your belly - american chinese food! their chicken chow mein is yums along with the sweet and sour pork, almond chicken, and fried prawns. and i know this is going to sound crazy weird, but their brownie and ice cream dessert is soooooooo good. this place is fun, it's kooky, they even kinda have a slight identity crisis, but it's just what every good local dive bar should be! read more

I live nearby the Rickshaw, and visited it a couple of times before it had a fire and the owner rebuilt it. The pre-fire Rickshaw needed a facelift. The clientele were crusty regulars that were loud and hung out at the bar. I had read the Rickshaw, along with the repairs and updating to the fire-damaged inside, was also updating and expanding its menu. A Groupon was offered to the Rickshaw, and I bought it thinking here's my opportunity and incentive to try the new and improved Rickshaw. Fast forward to my recent trip, post-fire. I took my 10 year old daughter for dinner. Plenty of parking, no problem finding a spot. The building is still very 'hard'; the entry door really, really needs some work; it is very uninviting, and gives the feel of entering a business from a back alley. Hanging outside this door were about 5 people, all smoking, whom I presume were patrons. Two loud patrons were on each side of the door, so we had to pass through them to get in to the restaurant, with loud F bombs popping off their active and unsophisticated dialogue. Negative first impressions are tough to overcome, and I'm a super forgiving guy...OK, the establishment can't do much about customer conduct outside. We were greeted by a friendly server as we entered, and given our choice of booths. This was 6:30 pm on a Wednesday, and there were very few people there for dinner. Judging by the noise and conversation at the nearby bar, it appears the same crusty regular were still frequenting the place. The loud background music? Ronnie James Dio, Black Sabbath, Van Halen, and similar. I'm a hard rock guy, but while this music might be good for a rockin' bar, but not for a place trying to change its image and attract local family business. Five or six large screen TV's were scattered throughout the bar and eating area, all showing sports. The menu had a good variety of options, primarily Asian, with a page on the back of "American" offerings, all fairly priced, which led me to believe The Rickshaw wants to be somewhat serious about being a restaurant. The server was very friendly, helpful, and attentive. He recommended the General Tso's; sure, I'll try it. It was different than General Tso's I have had, but in a good way, and it was very tasty. My daughter's chicken chow mein was excellent. Both serving sizes were ample. When we went to pay the bill, I was informed The Rickshaw owner was no longer accepting Groupons. I tried to appeal to the server, hey it's only $20; he went away to ask the owner, and returned with the same answer. Not accepting Groupons, I needed to contact Groupon to get a refund. We had gotten fair value (the food and my Manny's were all fairly priced), sans Groupon, so that didn't bother me at all. Oh, footnote, it was a small hassle, but I did get a refund from Groupon. Leaving The Rickshaw, the smoking crew huddling outside the entry door had reduced to three people, who appeared to be different folks than when we first arrived. Here's my take on The Rickshaw: it's still the same Rickshaw, just with new finishes on the inside. I'm not sure what it wants to be or its target audience and customer. Local watering hole? Sports bar? Family or local restaurant? So... Parking: 4 stars Ambience (family/dinner): 1.5 stars Ambience (bar): 2.5 stars Food quality: 4 stars Food value: 4 stars Service: 4.5 stars Overall rating: 2.5 stars Would I return? I don't know; I want to like it, but ...I'm hoping to find a local hangout that offers good food and cold beer at reasonable prices, but one with an identity and a little more polished than what The Rickshaw is at this time. read more

Growing up in Singapore where Chinese food beats Chinese food in China, I have to say the food snob in me thought this place was disgusting. I should have known better when I had to ask the waiter what a "pu pu platter" and what other "Chinese" dishes were, even though I practically grew up around Chinese food. The "broth" from the hot pot I ordered seemed more like sauce from leftover dishes all combined into one hot pot. The bbq pork was hard and cold. It also took us some time to find where the "crispy noodles" were in our crispy noodles dish. We later found out it had already turned soggy and pretty much dissolved into the sauce. I consumed about 5 glasses of water and 10 cups of tea because I was getting dehydrated from the excessive MSG. I only give this place 2 stars because the waiter was super nice and I got 2 fortunes in my fortune cookie. read more

This is how my star ratings are gonna go down: 1 star for having karaoke. I was pretty buzzed when I made it there. but from what I remember, it seemed cool. 1 star for being on eat24 and delivering to my house. OK I gotta put this out there, I don't know why I have suffered through eating their cheese burgers (twice) but...don't order it. Especially if you're having it delivered, don't do it. Their fries are chewy but soggy, the bun was just drenched with grease and it was put together all funny. They kinda just threw the fries in a box with the uber soggy burger. (Heaven forbid you get the salad instead of fries... My friend couldn't continue eating the rest of it) I know, I know- You're probably like, girl, that is Chinese American food! You should know better! Yes, I do, but I gave it a chance... and now I know never to make that mistake again. No matter how hungover or lazy I am for a damned deliverable cheese burger. ON the other hand, I enjoyed their egg flower soup and their Chinese donuts. Hooray for those two things... but I don't think I will be making any other orders from there. We had the plan to grab a drink with friends and they took us here to "Rickshaw". I don't think I would have come to this place on my own, because it looks more like a place you just drive by but don't go in. But I was happy that we went, because we had a really fun night! You can park your car just behind the building, so no stress with that. They had a drink special that evening and so we ordered many! The asian food they cook there is pretty sure not the best and most authentic you can find in this city, but it tasted good and we were satisfied. Our waitress was friendly and everything we ordered arrived quick at our table. They also have regular karaoke going on and some of the singers really weren't that bad! I don't sing Karaoke nor do I have any desire to actually go to the Rickshaw. Most of the time I squint my eyes at the bright neon lights flashing from the gaudy exterior of the building as I drive by onto better places and better restaurants. Now...with that being said I actually do love one of their dishes, hence the 2 star rating. Growing up in SF I remember my father bringing home Tomato Beef Chow Mein almost weekly for me. He would call it "Asian Spaghetti" and I would eat the entire box while happily watching Family Matters, Full House, or whatever "feel good" - "show with a moral" was on TV. When I ordered this from the Rickshaw as part of my delivery order I hesitantly opened the carton and after taking a couple of bites my head was spinning with memories of my childhood. I will warn you...this dish isn't for everyone. Although my father called it "Asian Spaghetti" it doesn't taste like spaghetti at all. It is more of a sweet - slightly tart ketchup flavored noodle dish studded with tomato chunks, green bell pepper, white onion, and slices of beef. Not for everyone but it is for me. They also have this dish called Honey Walnut Chicken...imagine fried chicken with the mayo sauce that usually comes with this dishes more well known Prawn relative. It sounded tempting because I love the sauce but it is way too much...talk about an artery clogger. read more

I frequent the Rickshaw and usually order the Thai Fried Rice w/ chicken. It's basic friend rice, nothing fancy, but definitely good. The one issue I have with Rickshaw is that ordering to-go over the phone can be a challenge. On three separate occasions I have received the wrong fried rice and two other times the entire order was incorrect (my roommate orders with me). Once or twice, I can understand, but any more than that and it gets ridiculous. We get it corrected, so that's the good thing, but they really need to get that part of their service straightened out. Other dishes that rock are the mongolian chicken and the tom yum soup. If you go for the late night karaoke, have the waitress choose a shot or two for you...just be prepared for something wicked. haha! read more

Oh man! I have been wanting to go here forever and, as expected, it practically destroyed me (not to mention the bottle of wine I drank beforehand). Though not necessarily the "Best American-Chinese food in Seattle" as advertised, some General Tso at 1 am was a life saver! Beers flowed and laughter erupted over & over. Our friend Frank the Tank is actually a server here. Ask for the Tank & tip BIG. The real reason anyone goes here is the karaoke. The lady running the 'roke was a trip (not all in a good way), but we enjoyed our songs. A very drunk women was trying to steal the microphone, but I battled her to continue my "500 miles" by the Proclaimers. Karate chop! All in all, a good time was had. I always order delivery from Rickshaw mostly when I'm sick of pizza so I haven't eaten in the restaurant. I always order the Crab Wontons - they are really good, real crab - wow! I also get the pot stickers and, get this, I think they make these in house! The noodle is thick-ish (not too much but enough to know they aren't mass produced in a factory) and the dumpling itself is probably 50% bigger than most. The Chow Mien is usually really good, the Phad Thai can be a bit dry (maybe because I'm getting it delivered so it's less fresh?), the Sesame Beef is excellent and the Garlic Chicken is really great over rice. It does take awhile (90 min on one occasion) to arrive so I try to order an hour or so before I want it to arrive! read more

You definitely do not come here for fine cuisine. The drinks are okay but nothing special and the food is designed to soak up the booze. When the karaoke started up the DJ left...and never came back. This left the workers trying to guess how to work the machine. This was actually more entertaining than the karaoke itself! It's basically a bar with food on the side, mirrors on the wall, and an old karaoke machine with 3 pages of Elvis songs. The videos to the songs are old 1980's stock footage from San Fernando CA, and the people a mixture of college kids and blue collar workers. I just moved to Seattle, and some friends of mine said that we should meet at rickshaw. The karaoke is every day. After nine they have a cheap skate menu for drunk singers who need to soak up said alcohol. I always drink too much and try to work up the nerve to sing. The girl behind the bar is crazy good because she can sing with one hand on the microphone and one hand pouring beers. Don't come here if you want authentic Chinese food. Don't come here if you want to hang in a chill, dark bar. Don't come here if you want attentive service. That said, this can be a rockin good time had by all. The food is greasy spoon and the staff is rough around the edges but the drinks are flowing and the tunes are flying. This place can break your karaoke cherry and have you turning tricks on the same night. To be honest with you, the stars are for the Karoake, NOT for the food. In fact, the only reason you should order food here is to shield your stomach from the outrageously strong drinks. This is the type of place where a "rum and coke" consists of rum rum rum rum rum and then a quick pulse fire blast of coke to make it look cloudy. After eating and drinking, you should have built up enough of a buzz and should be gassy enough to stumble your way through sweet Caroline... any day of the week. I've been here only once, but it was well worth it. We were driving by and just decided to try it out on a lark. The place was pretty near empty. The place reeks of old cigarette smoke and could use some reupholstering. I ordered a very tasty (and certainly unique) omelet with shrimp, imitation crab meat, and barbecued pork. Oh yeah, that's how we do it in da 206, and you know this! To drink I got a whiskey sour which was reasonably strong. I think it was happy hour, but the waitress was brand new and didn't ring us up right. So she gave us a coupon for a free drink that she just scribbled out on a bar napkin. There's plenty of pull tabs if you're into that kind of thing. The regulars seemed nice enough and the place has a friendly atmosphere.
