Delightful pen cases handmade in a small shop in SFCA. I came across these by "accident" ( read:: divine intervention) when buying a Retro 51. I was so very much in love with my pen case, which has served me to this day. As II expanded my Retro 51 collection, i learned about the large variety if designs Rickshaw Bagworks ( I call them RB) offers in a plethora of sizes and variations. The cases are so well-made. When i ordered off the website, RB delivered my order almost faster than the speed of light.. These cases are durable, gorgeous, calming, whimsical,, charming, sublime, creative,, fun, amusing. Some ate made for more gentle palates. The cases fit most pens if you order the right size.. Customer service, to put it blunty, is way beyond fast, efficjent, effective, helpful, kind. I wouldn't say i have exactly an addictive personality, but these pen cases would be a glaring exception to that " state of denial" as I can't seem to help myself from purchasing more and more. I ordered two bags online from Rickshaw Bagworks as gifts after learning about them on Reddit. The messenger bag, which they call a Banzai Bag, has Big Foot on it and the field bag has a small dragon on the front and a big dragon on the back. They arrived within a few days of ordering and both bags look great. I think the recipients are going to love them. The dragon field bag is meant to hold artist supplies for occasions when the artist is out in the field. I'm going to fill it up with fun supplies before giving it as a gift. The Banzai Bag is for a Big Foot lover in my life. Both bags are on the small side and come with detachable crossbody straps. Rickshaw Bagworks is located in San Francisco. One of the best things I own is a Rickshaw Bagworks Laptop 2.0 Bag that I bought over 9 years ago through a LivingSocial deal. Since then, I've been using the bag every day and it still looks almost new (a little dirty - but that's because I've never cleaned it). They are one of my favorite brands despite only having one bag, because of the durability and because I don't have to think about it - it just works (no hassle). This exact bag has been replaced by newer models, but the amazing design shows through to this day. Here are just a few of the things I can think of: - Shoulder strap with adjustable padding and a quick clip that allows for easy change in length - Closing with magnets (ease of opening) or with clips if you want it secured more - Two smaller front pockets and one long back pocket (with a bunch of small pockets including one for business cards). A ton of places to put pens, papers, and other knick-knacks. - Padded laptop cover (detachable) within laptop bag. Never used this feature, but this gives the bag a roomier feel if you're going sans-laptop. - Colors are super customizable. I chose a light blue tweed. Not only are these super stylish, but they are fairly unique with the customizations. What inspired me to write this review is because after a few thousand uses, one of the bolts that secured the shoulder strap to the hook wore out. I asked the company what I should do, and they said just send it in for a $15 repair + return postage and we'll fix it for you. That was back in Feb 2020 and I completely dropped the ball on this because of COVID. I remembered a few weeks back as I got an e-mail about a sale going on and finally sent in the strap. Two weeks later and my bag is fully functional again! This made me more excited because as much as I liked the Medium Zero, I didn't think it had enough pockets to meet my needs. Besides, I already had a Dakine and a Dickies messenger bag that suited my lifestyle. I decided to upgrade my laptop bag instead. I figured the removable sleeve makes it easy to swap things out and use it as a messenger bag if I really needed to do so. After a debate between the Zero, the Commuter and the Skinny Commuter, I decided to go the less is more approach and picked the Skinny Commuter. Then I had to decide how to customize my bag. I ended up going with the light gray tweed with an eye-popping turquoise binding and a blue label. Not only was the sales rep helpful, but she was also patient when I was trying to figure out how to customize my bag. I also ended up placing an order for a friend in LA who wanted some accessories with my 20% off in store coupon. She even let him use the coupon over the phone even though I was the one in store and not him. A few days later, the Moleskin Smart Phone folio went on sale online so I ended up customizing and purchasing one of those as well. Basically, the money I saved on my Living Social deal went back to Rickshaw anyway. I can't wait to see how my folio looks. I already filled my bag with all of my computer stuff and my Kindle. It fits snugly but it'll force me to be a little more minimalist. I love my bag, especially the comfortable shoulder strap and I've already received compliments on it. At a recent party, one of Gayle's friends (and an avid bicyclist) had high praise for Rickshaw Bagworks (owned by the original founder of TimBuk2). I'm not a hard core bike guy, but I do appreciate and enjoy a durable and stylish bag. Later on, I read someplace that Rickshaw had partnered with REDF, a San Francisco group that creates job opportunities through support of social enterprises. And if you donated $75 or more, a Medium Zero Messenger Bag would be yours. Zero means that none of the sustainable fabric used to make the bag is wasted. The graphics on this handsome bag were printed by Ashbury Images, one of the REDF supported businesses that employs at-risk youth. And I was so impressed that I went ahead and bought one of their nifty Moleskin folios. I had several built to order options and just received my black plaid version that holds a phone, pen, passport, and all those receipts that are easy to lose. There was also an 18 Rabbits energy bar waiting for me in one of the pockets. My only regret is not making a trip into the Dogpatch neighbourhood of the City and checking out the selection and additional fabric options myself. read more

I got my lovely brand new Rickshaw commuter bag and Moleskine folio a couple weeks ago. Lisa's customer service was great and I got exactly the bag I wanted in a pattern that totally fits my personality. It's obvious everyone there loves their jobs, bags are built to order and they will work to customize it to fit your needs (and my desire for predominantly green, neutral color patterns). They have all the little features you would never think of, including magnet fasteners (because I cringe a little every time I hear Velcro). It's sturdy and has served me well in the last month for school, work and weekends at the beach. However, that's not the story I want to tell you. I would like to tell you all a story called "Stephanie is an Idiot" subtitled "Why my Anthropology textbook smells like curry but my computer, ipod, and cell phone still work and smell like...not curry" Sounds like a fun story, right? It starts out with me being stupid and putting my lunch (in apparently a less than reliable Tupperware container) in the main pocket of my Rickshaw bag instead of sequestering it elsewhere. I had a big container of Mulligatawny soup (chicken, apple, cream, curry, rice, delicious). Include me sprinting to class to turn in a paper, tossing my bag in the corner like I usually do and haphazardly removing my books and you get a big mess that has to sit and pool there until the end of class... At the end of class I cleaned out my bag and thanks to the waterproof liner, only the main compartment was affected. No curry in the computer (because of it's waterproof sleeve), no curry on the Moleskine journal, no curry in the ipod or in the cell phone. After a good wipe down with some Lysol, my bag is not stained nor does it smell remotely like curry. Granted, my Anthropology book with forever smell like curry, but at least nothing else has to. So in conclusion to my random tangent, waterproof inside is awesome... However, having to buy a sub-par sandwich for lunch when you brought amazing soup from home is not... read more

I know I can be a tough customer. I am in the customer service business. I expect to be taken care of. Because of this, I was a bit dismayed that I got an email saying that my Richshaw bag would be ready in "7-10 days," but the bag was not ready to be picked up for over 2 weeks. Granted, they had a KILLER promotion. But enough whining. First, did I mention the KILLER promotion? This bag was nearly half off. And not just ANY bag, the Commuter Backpack with waterproof sailcloth. I have a Rickshaw bag (the mini messenger, my daily run-around bag), so I know they put out great quality bags. I have to say though, that as great as the Commuter Backpack looked online, it is simply AMAZING in person! The devil is in the details, and the Rickshaw experts are angels when it comes to putting in lots of little zippered pockets and compartments for organizing your important things while on the road. This truly is a bag for toting on the bike. They left no stone unturned. There are pockets for every single thing you need, including TWO side waterbottle pockets. I stow my cash, cards, license, important papers, chapstick, gummy bears, Notice to Appear in Court citation, gym clothes, shoes, extra socks, and helmet (when I am NOT riding). There's even room for my soapbox in this bag! This bag comes with backpack straps that are stowable. I paid a little extra for the messenger strap, which I prefer on the bike (don't forget the cross strap to stabilize your load, for just 5 bucks more) if you want to wear it messenger style. The pack is gorgeous, and would be welcome in a business meeting (if I ever got invited to such). The stitching is simply bulletproof, which a BART/train commuter might find handy considering the sketchy ridership these days. How does an insane person find the brain cells to buy a BART ticket I ask? Wait, that's another post. Simply said, Rickshaw Bags are the BEST bags -whether you are on the bike or just some lazy three toed sloth hanging around and needing an awesome place to store all your stuff. I am pretty sure you can operate the buckles on the straps with only 3 toes too. Bottome Line: so great, and worth the wait. I went to Rickshaw's factory and office last Wednesday to look at some swatches for some bags I wanted made. I ordered two: the sutro and a duffel. I was shocked when the folks there said I could get the bags by Friday at noon, in time for a trip to Boulder CO. ...And I was even _more_ shocked when they called around 2pm on Thursday to say the bags were ready to be picked up. Yes, that's right, it took them about 24 hours to produce two custom bags. These folks were not only incredibly kind, but they also turned my bags around lightning-fast. And the most important part? I love the bags! I thought that I might be frustrated at the Sutro's no-frills approach, but so far I've found that the laptop pocket, main compartment, and single exterior zip-up pouch are enough for my organizational needs. The duffel is the perfect size; it carried everything that I panic-packed to attend a wedding with. I ended up carrying both around all day Sunday, and I feel like I looked cool with them. Yay for supporting local businesses! I was with the cousin and bf driving around Dogpark when we drove past Rickshaw Bagworks. It was definitely eye-catching and inviting enough to make us park and stop by for a quick perusal. The little chalkboard sign outside their shop said it all - "Wondering what on earth goes on inside this building? -Come into our factory store to find out!" Inside the small warehouse was a little shop with custom/personalized made messenger bags, laptop and tablet covers, and totes! They had several dozen messenger bags ranging in all sizes on display all around the shop. I don't ride a bike, but I wish I did so I could justify the need for me wanting one! There is a wall of color swatches of the different materials hanging on the wall for you to choose from so you really can make it all your own. They also have a new line of cute and neatly designed San Francisco graphic inspired tote bags that my cousin and I couldn't resist in getting. She got the red one of the golden gate bride on one side and "San Francisco" on the other. I picked up the other one of the bridge for my sister's birthday present. It'll be a nice momento of the bay area for her to keep when she goes off to college next year :) 5-stars for being locally made, eco-friendly, and supporting the commuting lifestyle WITH style. I had been looking at getting the Commuter 2.0 for some time now but the price tag was holding me back. I went on the website again last night to take another look at the bags and almost ordered one, but decided against it only because I'm taking the nephew and niece to Disneyland in a few weeks and couldn't justify the expense. After looking at the website I checked out the deals on LivingSocial and saw the "Daily Deal" for the Commuter 2.0, with a 51% discount. I couldn't say no and bought the bag. That was Saturday night. So Sunday rolled around and I figured I would go redeem the voucher for the bag. Only one glitch, and it wasn't that bad. The website stated that the shop opened at 10:00am. When I got there at 11:45am the sign stated the shop opened at noon. I walked around the neighborhood for 15 minutes since it was a nice day and others were milling around. I went back to the shop around noon and walked in to meet "Mark" the co-founder and CEO that did many of the online videos. He was talking to another couple at the time but invited me to the workshop where the bags are made. He exuded the pride of a craftsman showing off his wares. The shop was impressive, from the sowing production line down to the laser cutter. He gave a glimpse at the culture of this company when he showed off the bike racks for the employees who bike to work. They endeavor to leave a zero environmental imprint. I was impressed. After the short tour I headed off to the little retail niche and looked at the bags. I immediately spotted one and picked it up and headed off to the counter to make my purchase. Mark came over and engaged me, very good customer service. He went on to mention other tidbits about the company and quality of the bags. I have to say, I cannot remember feeling this good about a purchase in years and I know that I am going to get my money's worth and more out of the bag I purchased. read more

WOOT WOOT to rickshaw, i thought i knew what i wanted, started with the city messenger, picked my colors and it was done days sooner than i was told. i jet there to pick up it up, NOTE: great eateries around their hood, so good excuse to pick it up, that as well as save yourself the money and the planet the shipping. i picked up my original order, and of course as a girl's prerogative... changed my mind :( the city messenger was way bulkier than i liked, and i didn't really like that the gist of the bag is black and not customizable. SO, they were AWESOME encouraged me to get what i really wanted and i changed it to the medium zero messenger, customized the whole thing, no ugly black material, i reordered it, they refunded me the difference, and i got it in a few days. it was way more form fitting for my size (i'm 5'2"/105 lbs) this works for carrying all my stuff, including mac. i love it!! the cashier and the guy commented on the customized design when i picked it up, and my colleagues back at the office. oh how proud i was of my lil' creation, well and rickshaw's handiwork!! thanks again, they are awesome. read more

I was excited to go to this store after reading such great reviews about the customer service. However, I walked in on Sunday 6/22 and the two ladies inside didn't even say hi, they looked at me and continued gossiping about some guy. There are TONS of options for the bags so a little help is needed but the people here were not interested in offering any help at all. After a while of perusing, I went up to the counter and asked for help with colors. One girl just gave me a dirty look, as if to ask why I was interrupting her all-important, mid-work gossip session. The other dropped what she was doing and immediately started helping me with colors. She was quite helpful. The other girl should be fired. As a business owner myself, I would never tolerate that kind of attitude towards customers. The products themselves look good. It's a shame the people inside aren't very welcoming though. read more

Hi again. I just wanted to update people now that I have even more messenger bag goodness from Rickshaw. I did end up purchasing an XL Velo backpack. It's a little big, slightly plain (for my personal tastes) and 110% made of AWESOME. I'm not kidding when I say I cram this thing to the hilt. Figure skates, figure skating equipment, change of clothing, 15'' Macbook Pro, water bottle, lunch, and some light reading material. It gets PACKED. And considering how much weight I have on my back, the shoulder reinforcements are really effective at keeping me from being in constant pain. The sailcloth material is super durable as well. I don't know if I think it could withstand a skate blade, so I've been pretty careful not to test it in that regard. I would've loved a side water bottle carrier with it, but otherwise, no complaints. I've also bought two musettes since then (very cute little $15 totes, essentially), and a Zero iPad messenger bag, which has actually become a staple for my gym/ballet days where I just want to stuff a few small pieces of clothing into it, along with a Kindle e-reader. It also works great as a case for my Nikon L820. In summary, I've come to two infallible conclusions: 1) I need to stop buying messenger bags. You can only carry one (okay, maybe two) at a freaking time. In a similar vein, Rickshaw needs to stop having 25-50% off deals for in-store purchases. Or else the 22 needs to not stop so close to their store, making it so convenient for me to get to. Pick one. 2) Rickshaw bags will always have a special place in my heart. They're fantastic in every sense. (P.S. Rickshaw did fix up my Commuter 2.0 with the water bottle bungee chord issue and I was able to take that home on the same day. I recently picked up a messenger bag at Rickshaw, and I love it. This handsome bag is solidly put together, easily adjustable, has plenty of pockets without being cluttered, and is nicely space-efficient. I actually think that I am biking around town more just because I enjoy showing off my cool new bag, and I'm even beyond the honeymoon stage at this point. The purchase experience was excellent--I stopped into the shop in Dogpatch and Ryan showed me around the facilty, let me view the bag sizes and styles, worked with me on some options and then before I knew it the bag was rolling off the line, made just for me. I thought I'd have to wait 4-6 weeks or something, but I was in and out within 30 minutes or so with a great new bag. I'm writing a review for Rickshaw here since their website doesn't seem to have user reviews. I picked one up with the Living Social deal everyone is mentioning and I couldn't be more pleased. I went in wanting a small not a medium, expecting to lose a bit on the deal which specified medium messenger only. As it turned out, I could get whatever I wanted up to the value of $70 bucks! So I scored a small bag with a specialty fabric and a cross strap (exactly what I wanted) without spending a dime extra on top of the deal. Way to accommodate!! AND I am really pleased with the bag. I've used every messenger bag under the sun--Chrome, Mission Workshop, Timbuk2--and none of them have been quite as perfect as my Rickshaw bag. It's small (most bags are a little too big and messengery for me, and as they get smaller they lose the cross strap which I can't bike without), there's no extra loop/material when you tighten it the strap (other bags always catch on my bike saddle), the cross strap doesn't have extra hanging material, it's simple to use, light weight, and doesn't have a billion pockets to give me a heart attack every time I go searching for my keys/phone/wallet thinking I've lost something. I also like that the fabric isn't stiff--it actually sits against your body. This bag pretty much solves every gripe I've ever had with a messenger bag. And it's eco-friendly and SF made to boot! I do wish there were a few more fun fabrics and bright colors, and I think there's a certain polish that more commercial brands produce (I wouldn't say the Rickshaw bags are the most stylish you'll encounter, though they are stylin'), but I imagine these things will come with time as Rickshaw grows. I originally bought my commuter 2.0 off of a groupon but I wasn't sure about it so i went on their website to see what was up. After looking through all of the reviews, product descriptions and what not, I decided to go for the commuter 2.0 bag. I got it customized with a beige tweed and tan binding. After using for about 7 months or so. I absolutely love this bag. It is so convenience and has room for so many things and tons of pockets. About a month ago, one of my waterbottle pockets tore and it was a huge bummer. I emailed customer service to see if there was anything that could be done. Even if I had to pay a little bit, I wouldn't really care as long as I didn't have to get a new bag. Crystal, was super helpful and I got a completely brand new bag for FREE. I was treated super well and was able to get more than what I thought I would get. read more

I really like the local, eco-friendly, hipster feel of this place, and the idea of a customized bag is genius! They also have really friendly customer service when I was ordering the bag, although when I went to pick up my bag, they had misplaced it. They weren't all that organized with the completed bags -- basically just putting them into boxes labeled with first letters of last names with a paper invoice slotted beneath the front bag flap. The invoice had gotten lost for my bag, so I found it in a random box. I was worried someone else had taken it! I also got the living social deal, which was 50% off the medium zero bag. I'm not sure I would have paid full price (actually, I probably would have never discovered this brand). However, it is made right in the San Francisco factory, so I can see why they can demand higher prices. It's nice to see another side messenger bag other than the timbuk2. Comments about the bag itself: The closure is velcro, which I'm not sure I would normally prefer, because it makes an unpleasant sound when opening (especially in very quiet rooms). The strap also doesn't have any padding around it; it's basically a 2 inch wide strip. However, it was still very comfortable when I slung it around my shoulder. The "r" logo on the front can be color customized, but only for approximately 10 different colors. Apparently it's very expensive to change the color of the logo sewn on the bag. By the way, I ordered the Medium Zero bag, which was big enough to fit my 14.1'' screen Dell laptop even though the website says the medium size is only big enough for a 13'' screen. Just FYI that the medium size fits most laptops. read more

I almost want to beat up my current messenger bags and drag them through the mud and over rough pavement and maybe even in a pyro moment set them on fire just to have an excuse to buy my own custom Rickshaw Bag. I'd been thinking of stopping in here to buy a friend a bag for his birthday, and lo and behold the day arrived. I needed something quick, and little did I know, a CUSTOM bag would be QUICK! Super coolio. The sales woman helped me pick out a striking combo of colors and materials for a small bag, and asked if I was in the neighborhood because it would be done by lunch time, and I went in at 10 am! I like their eco/local ethos, and when I went to pick up the bag later in the day, it was well made and super spiffy. Good job, Rickshaw. I'm def thinking about getting one of their moleskine folio covers, too. read more

On my way to the SF Street Food Festival, I stopped by Rickshaw to see what wares they offered. Mostly all of the bags were messenger style and the styles were mostly patterned colors. I think there was an option to customize your own bag which sounded cool but otherwise, the bags seemed really well made and very supportive/durable. They also sell cell phone cases as well as tablet cases too. I will likely stop by Chrome on my way home to Caltrain one of these days for comparison purpose but otherwise, these Rickshaw bags were solid. read more
