Mission Workshop does not honor their "Lifetime Warranty" at all. We purchased 2 The Shed sling bags, and the modular backpack. Over several years of use, we tagged their brand on social media, talked them up to clothing designers, models and entrepreneurs in the Los Angeles area, and acted as informal brand ambassadors. Over several years, both sling bags developed tears, lost waterproofness, and the modular backpack showed signs of extreme sun damage. When contacted for warranty repairs, Mission Workshop cited the age of the bags, and stated it was time to purchase new ones at full retail MSRP. The "Lifetime Warranty" does not cover their bags after several years. For the waterproofness, we were told to purchase Nilwax and treat the bags with holes in them. We were shocked a new offshoot of Chrome would advertise this deceptively. read more

I own a few Missionworkshop Items - a Rhake backpack, Transit laptop bag, and Rummy messenger bag. They're all built extremely well and last for years! I use my Rhake for short term travel - its unique storage system makes it easy for me to keep my gear organized. The Rummy is super spacious and has plenty of room for lugging around gear when I go on a bike ride. The Transit is a sleek shoulder bag with plenty of room for laptop, compressed jacket, and a few other items. Some materials age better than others, and my Transit laptop bag, which i bought in 2017, made of Waxed Canvas developed some tears. I contacted Mission Workshop and they repaired my bag to like new! read more

I was an early adopter and bought a bag from the flagship store. I've loved it and use it daily for work, for travel, and have used it for bike commuting. After about 10 years the inside laptop compartment zipper broke. Their customer support was great. The process did take a while, but they were responsive and helpful, and they offered to apply my original purchase price to a new bag, which I did, and I've been extremely happy with the new one. As it turns out, the zipper on the old bag was able to be replaced, so they offered to return that as a backup. Great products and even better support standing by what they make. read more

A quick note about MW's guarantee, I purchased the Vandal backpack in 2013. After innumerable travel soccer, business, and family trips around the US and outside, in which the backpack was under seats, through checked luggage, etc. there was an issue with one internal zipper in September '25. Sent MW an email, after a reply email from Bart at MW, sent the backpack to MW, and MW's Bart repaired the zipper no questions asked. A true no hassle warranty more than 12 years after original purchase, and the Vandal, despite the abuse of travel, is still going strong. read more

Over the years, I've bought all sorts of items from MW (light running jacket, beanies, Rhake backpack) and generally, the quality of most of the products has been great. This specific review is about the Rhake backpack and their customer service. I originally preordered the Rhake VX back in 2019 when they first came out. Since then, I've used this back as a nearly daily commuter and occasional carry on for light travel and it's been amazing in all regards. Given the use, the water bottle pocket was not very sturdy and has slowly deteriorated over the years, resulting in some holes that need to be patched up. I brought the pack into the store to ask about the warranty and to patch it up, but I was told that it was not covered (!!) and that they would be able to direct me elsewhere to get a patch and fix it myself. Given the price of their packs, I'm quite disappointed with this customer service. If you're going to pay nearly $400 (and with some of their packs, more!) for a backpack with a "Lifetime Guarantee", you would expect to have a no hassle warranty, even for wear and tear. Shoot, at least charge me $20 and fix it. Might as well go buy cheaper gear elsewhere moving forward. read more

Just awful. $220.00 for a small over-the-shoulder bag. Strap is a automotice seatbelt with a slide pad that's never in the right place and cuts into your neck. The "hardware" is big nasty cheap plastic snap buckles. The roll top unrolls even when the plastic slide is tightened all the way. I have a made-in-USA Chrome backpack that's wonderful. Even these people are heirs to Chrome, well, bad things happen in every family. Way pissed about this cheap bag. This is preying on people who want to buy American. read more

Really dig their bags here, the construction of the bags are made really well. I heard about this place from my friends who owns the bags and swears by them. So I ended up checking them out myself when I got to SF. Really nice people and great service here. The location is just about a block off the Bart Station. As for the store itself, it looks like a cross between REI and Timberland with that nature, woodsy feel. For the bags in stock, they didn't have all the selection at the store but we were advised we can order on their on-line store. Though the bags retail around $200, they are well made. read more

I've got to echo Stephen B.'s review below. I bought a $350 pack online (the Rhake) a year ago. Pretty seamless process: I paid, it shipped, it arrived, I used it. Great pack, love the design with the exception of some strange decisions, but I was happy. At 1 year, the laptop zipper broke. No way to fix it. I had to ship it back to have them fix it ($50 to ship this thing and insure it for $300). I inquired about the possibility of a $50 gift card to cover the shipping costs, as I didn't feel a $350 pack should be breaking after 1 year of truly light use. The next communication I got from MW was that they had received the pack and it was not fixable so they gave me a gift code for $350. They did not reply to my request for an additional $50 to cover shipping, but whatever. I go on the site to reorder my backpack, it's out of stock. Okay...I email customer service again, say it's out of stock, and request an upgrade to the higher quality material, as compensation for the fact that it's out of stock and the $50 shipping. Customer service replies "oh we've got one of yours in the shop, we'll send it out." And they subsequently deactivated my gift card. Okay whatever, I just want my pack at this point. This was on Feb 4. On Feb 8, I still hadn't received it nor a tracking no. I email customer service again requesting a tracking no. I got a reply on Feb 14 saying "you should be receiving it tonight." Today is Feb 16 and I just received the pack. The shipping label was dated Feb 11 so they obviously forgot to ship it until I requested a tracking no. 4 days later. TDLR: cool design, average quality, horrible customer service. You're better off buying a brand new $30 JanSport every single month, it would be the same cost. read more

THE PRODUCT: After many days of comparing several of bags and narrowing it down to 3 of their own bags (Chrome was out of the picture for backpacks [although, i do love the messenger I have of theirs], and SF Freight Baggage were out of the running), I narrowed it down to the MW Arikiv R6 modular bag, Vandal, and Rambler. I spent 2 more visits building my dream, frontrunner, Arkiv R6 bag. That thing comes with a hefty price tag for all the modules I wanted...almost $600! Definite setback. I did more research and realized the Rambler (seemingly smallest of the 3 aforementioned) actually expands to MORE THAN the $600 bag. BACK IN TO THE SHOP I WENT. I tried on the Rambler & Vandal. (let me say, if i were a taller person, I'd go for the bigger Vandal. THAT THING CAN EXPAND TO HOLD THE UNIVERSE! sadly, i'm only 5'0" so that size of a bag, even at its compressed state, didn't feel comfortable and was too big.) So, I put the Rambler on and IT FIT PERFECTLY. I was a little worried that I would lose out on all of the storage space of the Vandal, but had to go with what was more comfortable. After using my bag for a few weeks, I can say - I AM NOT MISSING OUT ON ANYTHING. I was able to fit a 20lb bag of dog food, coffee, a soup pot, various ingredients for the soup, my 15" laptop & accessories WITH ROOM TO SPARE! The only thing I'd add, if possible, were some inside organizational compartments (for pens and things like that.) Otherwise, NO COMPLAINTS. As a recap: - I bought the smallest of the 3 aforementioned backpacks (Rambler) - expands to 42L (bigger than the Arkiv R6 modular bag) - construction of the bag is AMAZING. - CUSTOMER SERVICE IS AMAZING. This is a nifty little shop tucked away from the bustling businesses on Valencia and in the Mission but is a great visit if you're looking for some awesome waterproof backpacks that are compact, lightweight and help you carry all your goodies around in the most efficient way. The staff is friendly and very accommodating as well as very knowledgeable about the products they sell. Everything is functional, stylish and waterproof although it will cost you an arm and a leg while at it ... Checked out the website and was interested in a couple bags. The guy who worked there didn't seem too keen on helping me upon my arrival. Based off of what I was wearing he probably thought I didn't have a lot of money and compared to his demeanor to some of the other clientele I was kinda taken a back by the lack of help I was given. Basically he seemed like a bicycle elitest who picked and choose'd who he was nice too. Maybe he was having a bad day? I was interested in the VX small rucksack which is almost identical to the sanction rucksack. I asked a few questions about the difference in the 2 bags. And based off of his limited knowledge of the product I couldn't justify spending another $100 on the VX cause it came with some extra metal hardware. The words "I dont remember" came out of his mouth. Anyway... I went with the Sanction and am quite happy with my choice. The bags are on the higher end of the price scale but are rugid and are backed by a lifetime guaranty. I wanted a backpack with the following characteristics: 1) comfortable even when heavy 2) doesn't look ridiculous with my work clothes (female business casual) 3) can hold a ton of stuff so i'm not carrying purse, laptop bag and gym bag to work everyday (how can you even bike like that? answer: it's impossible) After asking friends and a minimal amount of research deciding between Chrome (lower quality), Timbuk2 (doesn't meet requirement #2), SF Freight (also doesn't meet requirement #2) and Mission Workshop, it was obvious that MW was the clear winner. I got the Sanction and I haven't looked back. It holds all my sh*t, it's comfortable and evenly distributes the weight, the buckles are strong and work for when I have so much stuff in there you can't fold the top over, the laptop sleeve is on my back, there's tons of small pockets, and it looks sick and slick. At least one person comments or asks about my backpack every day. I wore it skiing too which is perfect - totally waterproof. It's $200 but with a lifetime warranty. This backpack is fire. read more

I've been looking at their bags for quite awhile online and I thought I'd drop in on their headquarters while in SF. The shop is super minimalist with racks holding a full line up of their bags (including unique test packs that aren't even sold on the site! waxed canvas backpacks anyone?). The guys working there are super chill and showed me the features of their bike messengers and even happily took a picture of my group after my sister insisted we take a picture with the cool [secret] alley way location. Like many other reviewers, I'm really disappointed with Mission Workshop. My $750 raincoat broke after only two uses. They said that they would repair it and promised that it would be done in two days. But it's been a month, they will not longer commit to a timeline for repair, and the rainy season is almost over. Without a doubt, the best customer service I've received in a long time. My business partner and I walked in to inquire about new bags for our employees. We spent nearly 2 hours in the shop, and during that time, Ray was attentive to our every whim. He did not hesitate to fulfill any request made of him, including pulling out different sizes and colors of bags from the back, as well as allowing us to mix and match accessories to get a better feel for what our money was going towards. I already had one MW bag (the Sanction in charcoal) but recently took on a project that would require me to haul much more than I can fit into it. So, back to MW! I ended up with one of their expandable backpacks and wowie it's amazing. You can cram so much shit in there! But the design makes it feel weightless. My only complaint is that with the Sanction I was able to keep all my small items easily accessible, with everything having a place, and now I'm finding that all the small stuff that we tend to want to grab for pretty frequently is just swimming around in the main compartment. There is only one small pocket on these expandable bags. Looking at their website it appears that what I really may need is an Arvik Field Pack. I'm pretty certain they weren't available when I made my purchase a few months ago. They look awesome! And would def solve my where-the-hell-are-my-keys-now? problem. As for service - everyone here is awesome. They don't hover or put any pressure on but I have always been checked in with on every visit. They'll also let you practice using the bag and all its features, give you a tutorial, and even let you stuff books and clothes into the bag to see how it feels with weight. Wow. It doesn't get any better than that, does it? Oh, yes it does. I had brought only a certain amount of money. I wanted to also get the waist strap, but that would have put me over budget. What happened next? I was given enough of a discount to get both the bag AND the waist strap AND leave with some money in my pocket. I didn't ask for a deal, maybe he could just see the sad look on my face. That's just good customer service! I didn't even tell him I already owned and loved one MW bag until after he rang me up. I've used a MW bag almost every single day for the last year and they both still look brand new. The same can be said for my friends' MW bags- they hold up extremely well. Yeah - it's expensive. But there is a lot of good intention and value for the price. The Experience: The store is totally cool and down an alley in the Mission. If you are a tourist, it's a memorable experience. If you aren't a tourist, it's still a very unique looking place. It's not a huge showroom and they don't have millions of options - but there is the opportunity to see every option, touch each bag, and try whatever you want on. The Staff: The girl working there when I bought my bag on 3/17 was so unbelievable patient. What do I know about biking bags? Not much. I had a high school backpack from 15 years ago and the straps were almost torn all the way through. I had to look at every option and being as indecisive as I am, it takes me forever to decide. There are always lots of questions to ask too. She also was very personable to all the customers I saw during the time I was there - some were rude tourists, some were super hip bikers, some were average people. She treated everyone super California friendly. The Product: Various sizes of bags. It's unbelievable how big they get and how much they can store. You can tell from the quality of construction that this bag is going to last a while. Waterfpoof zippers, velcro, snaps. Very good warranty. They also have VERY nice jackets, shirts, shoes, and more...but hey...I only have so much dinero. It's also has the advantage of being Made in America and keeps a little bit of craft going strong on this side of the ocean. End Result: So I spent a lot of money on a bag. But I feel like it is going to handle anything that I can send its way and it is my duty to use it for a long time. I managed to snag one of their limited edition waxed canvas messenger bags for the husband in time for Christmas, making plans to pick it up at the Los Angeles location (separate review to follow). Not too long after I placed the order, I got a phone call from Darius with Mission Workshop letting me know that the Los Angeles location did not have the bag, but the SF location did. (Mind you this is 2 days before Christmas). I offered to BART out to SF later that night, or to pay for them to ship the bag to where I was staying for the holidays, but not only did they overnight the bag to Los Angeles, they did it at no charge to me. Darius sent me a confirmation and follow up email as well as tracking number. Having worked in retail myself, I can only imagine what kind of chaos they were already dealing with this close to the holiday, so to do all that for me - a new customer at that - was for sure above and beyond anything I pictured happening in this scenario. This just made me a repeat customer. I'm not gonna lie. The bags are definitely expensive, but the folks behind the scenes proved why they're worth it. I own other messenger bags and backpacks. My problem is that my bags are either never perfectly sized so I constantly have to swap bags depending on what I'm hauling around the city. Needless to say, I've been searching for the perfect bag, despite dropping a good amount of money on Timbuk2 products. I was about to dive into Chrome, until I discovered Mission Workshop on Yelp. I visited their store during one of my lunch break to check what it was all about. The place is tucked away an alley, not too far from the craziness of Mission Street. It's not hard to find, though. The store is pretty cool -- it has an open facade and it's nicely laid out so you have room to walk around, look at the cool art while you try on gear. I was greeted by Ray behind the counter when I walked in. Cool dude who was very knowledgeable and extremely helpful. Some things I really liked -- Ray gave me sufficient time to check out the products on my own without bugging me; came in at the right time and answered all my questions and made suggestions; gave a short but detailed run down on how the messenger is modified, put on and taken off. Thumbs up to their awesome customer service! I never felt pressed to buy something. In the end, I walked away with a small messenger. Be warned -- the prices aren't cheap, but no matter because you won't be buying any other bags anymore. This one is definitely a keeper. Nicely done, Mission Workshop. You rock my socks! read more

Overpriced and snooty? Maybe. I'm not a bike rider and I'm not into any aspect of the bike riding elitist lifestyle, but after two years with a Vandal, I no longer care about any of that. My bag has not been treated gingerly by any means and it shows no visible signs of wear in all of that time. I've walked miles through torrential downpours with it and nary a drop of water has ever intruded upon its contents. After a lengthy respiratory infection, I left an entire bottle of cough syrup in the middle pocket for over a month before I realized it had leaked all over the place. I pulled it out, wiped everything down with a damp rag and that was it. I was done. There was no residual stickiness, no lingering medicinal smell, just a clean bag. Went to Mission Workshop with my boyfriend today. He came to buy a new messenger bag that he will likely be using for the next five years or so. He knew he wanted something sturdy and durable, so he chose to check out Mission Workshop. The messenger bag itself looked classy, durable, and looks to have many pockets to provide for a multitude of needs. Excellent product. I also really wanted to write a review because one of the staff sporadically offered me a free bag of whole-bean coffee from a local distributor that they coincidentally had on hand. I thought this was incredibly kind and very unexpected. It looked to be on a friendly whim, so I wouldn't expect to be offerred free coffee, but who knows. Then I talked to another staff member about coffee for a while and they made me a fresh cup and taught me about the single-cup system they use in house. I have experience better. When Bart was part owner they have better customer service. I just receive a wx rhake bag and i emailed them regarding the imperfection of the bag and letting them know that their quality have diminished. The strap was flipped flop as like the stiches of your tshirt is inside out. Anders says it is normal to have something like that and it will pass thru their quality control. I find that difficult to believe as no one who want to look good have their shirt worn inside out. I must think twice of buying their bags again as I have bought about 12 bags from them. I got the Sanction rucksack and this bag is solid. Great material, weatherproof, lots of space, and it looks sleek. I bike to work every now and then, so I needed something for my work clothes and shoes and this does the job. Awesome backpacks, great customer service, and a cool location make Mission Workshop the spot for high quality bike gear. Ray is the man. Nice, knowledgeable, and he takes care of his customers. I'm a bit worried about Mission Workshop. As someone who both runs cold and likes the outdoors, I've spent many years trying to optimize my gear. Everyone knows they have great bags (I have two) but I can honestly say that Mission Workshop has the best technical clothing available. Easily competitive with Outlier and anyone else. The Torre is the best hoodie I've ever had. I actually went and tracked down a second one at a local motorcycle shop. The Zurich is an exceptional shell with a snug but stretchy fit, and I'm blown away by the Signal pants. They feel like getting the value, wear, and durability of 3 pants in one. Stylish and high performance. The problem I have with Mission Workshop is that I'm not sure I can trust them in our relationship. They run out of stock often, for months. They discontinued the Torre after only 2 seasons in spite of many people loving it. They seem slow on riding the seasonal promotions (did they notice it's Fall?). Maybe they're content to be a boutique shop but they don't do much to advertise or get the word out - they weren't ever aware of some of the big outdoorwear conventions that grab the usual suspects. Again, I compare them to Outlier who clearly have big plans. So I'm worried a bit that Mission Workshop will discontinue more of my favorites, fail to get the word out, and decline into oblivion. But mostly I just want more of their sweet gear! read more

What I didnt update that review...shame on me! Well I ended up not only buying the Vandal backpack, but also the Orion jacket. That jacket was worth every single penny and then some-feels like I got paid to wear it almost. I have had both items for over a year now, and have worn the orion almost every single day (until 3 days ago , when the heat wave set it). That jacket keeps you cool when its hot; warm when its cold; and dry when its wet. Not sure you could want much more out of a jacket, unless off-course you want style. If you do, it's safe to assume that Mission Workshop has your back covered! read more
