Absolutely outstanding! As the sign says " FRESH FOOD - NOT FAST FOOD!" Visitors - pay attention!!!!! While vacationing this year - 2016 - we dropped into "RICK's REEF". Not disappointed at all. We have been by this place many times during our vacations and have not stopped in. Well guess what?? Things have changed......... We have just found 1 of the best local dives that exists on the strip. If you want to drive through Mickey D's and grab a fillet'of'fish - you should do so - otherwise stop in @ Rick's - grab an ice cold beer, soft drink or tea, and relax and let them take care of your appetite. My wife and I had a blackened grouper sandwich. Her plate - she got hand cut fries - ":My plate - I got "hand cut onion rings". Agreement before ordering - we share fries and rings..... LOL Sandwiches were awesome - fries and rings were top notch!! Bloody Mary's - Magarita's - and cold beers were top notch! Wish I had found this place earlier during the week. My husband and I came here for dinner and so glad we did! Looks like a dive from the outside but the food is the best in the area! We got the fish tacos, crab cakes, and buffalo shrimp and everything was great! Service was awesome - everyone was very friendly and prices were good. Can't beat it! read more

My wife and I and our neighbor and his wife went to Ricks Reef tonight for dinner and drinks. I had one of the more expensive item on the menu as I recall (grouper) and the wives had medium priced items. My neighbor had the evening's special described by the waiter as a half pound of catfish and fries plus a beer. We had three wines and a beer plus another wine refill. The food was good, but my neighbor's special did not arrive with the other food. We waited quite a while, and then started to eat our orders. The waiter came by and said that my neighbor's fish did not look good, so they were redoing the order. Finally it came and it consisted of a big basket of fries and two little strips of fish. I guess it was the wine, but I complained (politely) to the waiter about the size of the fish order. He left and another man came out and said he was the "owner" and asked what was the problem. I explained, and he said "what did you expect for $8.00"? I told him that the waiter had said a half pound of catfish (possibly we all misunderstood as we are senior citizens and local residents). At that point he became unglued. He rudely cursed us out (I never curse) and ordered us out of his restaurant immediately. He grabbed a garbage can and raked everything off the table including the unfinished meals, the wine and wine glasses, my iced tea, water, utensils, etc. I'm glad he did not have a gun! It is the first time in my 73 years that I have ever been "kicked out" of a restaurant or any other establishment. read more

Great $8 daily specials (includes a drink M-F). Looked like it might not be family friendly, but I was totally wrong. Ate with a party of 11, and a party of nine while on vacation. Everyone loved their food and requested to go back, Monday is fish n chips and it was AMAZING. Crab stuffed grouper, jumbo shrimp and lobster mac were also great. Can't wait to visit again on a return trip. Definitely worth your time and also easy on the pocketbook. read more

My mother and I stopped in at 12:30 today for a drink and a quick bite to eat on our way to go shopping. We sat at the bar and ordered two drinks, then two apps: Quesadillas and beef skewers. Most people were only there for a drink, and the place was far from full, but over an hour later we were still waiting for our appetizers. When we asked if our food was coming out soon, we were told by the bartender that the single cook in the kitchen was "swamped." However, she did not go to move our order along; she didn't leave her post at all to tell anyone that some people were displeased with the slow service. We were not the only people complaining either; a man sitting nearby had been waiting on a salad nearly as long as we were. By a quarter to 2, my mother and I just paid for our drinks and left. Nobody made any effort even then to fix the issue; the owner was around but he was busy selling shirts and restocking the bar, not helping to get orders out. There are so many good places to eat in St. Pete just like it, there is no way I'd ever consider going back here, where it is clear that filling drink orders and keeping customers waiting are the only things they excel at. After reading all the great reviews, we stopped in for lunch. The margarita was good. My husband had the fish tacos and I had the pork sandwich. Neither one was very good. The taco didn't have much in it, and the fish had no flavor. The pork sandwich was big, but it had no flavor either. The tropical slaw was good. We won't be back. read more

Awesome dinner in a casual place with relaxed and friendly ambiance. Food was fresh and portions were generous. My wife is from Maryland and particular about crab cakes and she was pleasantly surprised. Salad was fresh and my fish tacos were outstanding! The service was extremely slow. We waited forever for the appetizer to come, which was Mac and cheese. That actually was good. I ordered the fried grouper sandwich and they forgot to include the lettuce tomato and onion that she had asked if I wanted. The breading on the grouper sandwich was tasteless and the French fries tasted like they had been fried in old oil. Would not come back! read more

Average service and bad food quality. About a week ago I went with my family to this place to have a nice seafood dinner there was only one other table in the restaurant so it was not busy at all. The food that we got was terrible. We mentioned it to the server and she just seemed like it didn't matter. My wife's mahi sandwich literally only covered 1/3 of the bun and all the food came out at different times. My father was done eating his food by the time my sister-in-law's food just came out. Some of the food was hot some of the food was cold and I had 1 of the worst grouper sandwiches of my life. I'm really not sure that it was actually grouper because it was so fishy or maybe it was just old I actually fish and catch grouper so I know what it is supposed to taste like. I would never go to this place again it is a big waste of money go somewhere else and enjoy a nice meal in Saint Pete beach there are many wonderful places. read more

We went for lunch after reading other reviews on Yelp. The food (grouper sandwiches) was excellent BUT if you do not like a smoke filled environment this is not the place to be! My husband is allergic to smoke and we ended up sitting out by the front to eat since the whole dinig room smelled of smoke from the people sitting outside at the bar which opened right into the dinig room. Awful!! Ruined what would have been a great dining experience. Our server was very good and sympathetic to us. Apparently they have had several complaints about this issue. read more

Honestly the best FISH TACOS AND CRAB CAKES in the area! The freshly made french fries definitely top it off. They also gave us bumper stickers (tackle box stickers :)) during one visit & pink beer huggies on another visit! If smoke bothers you, try to sit outside, as smoke from outside can linger inside. I will NEVER spend another dime in this place. We had a pre-arranged group of around 50 showing up but were forbidden to go inside. We were only allowed to use the outside part of the establishment. Though some of our group did go inside, they got kicked out for cheering on the Olympics. I liken this restriction to: you can ride the bus but you can only ride in the back and the restrooms and drinking fountains are only for certain types of people. If you can't offer equal treatment for all customers, than you shouldn't have taken our money. read more

The wife and I drove over an hour to celebrate my birthday with a nice dinner. We ate here once before and loved the grouper sandwich, lobster roll and lobster mac and cheese. We arrive to find out that they no longer offer the lobster roll and were out of grouper. Later the group next to us (apparent frequent visitors) tried ordering grouper and when the waitress told them that they were out, they said, "Again". The only reason I can see for running out of the most sold fish in the area, is that they are struggling. The waitress also stated that they could not make enough money on the lobster roll, so they discontinued it. This is my assumption only, they could be doing great but to run out of fish on a Saturday about 4pm is not good management. (ordering) Everything that we have eaten here is very good! The quality and taste are top notch. I would have given 4 stars if they would have had grouper and not stopped selling the lobster roll. read more

I don't understand how this place gets 4 stars. We were greeted fairly quickly when we arrived, and it started going downhill from then. We asked to be seated outside because it was such a nice evening. We were seated at a table that was not prepared. We ordered drinks right away and waited a bit longer than necessary, I had a beer and my wife had a margarita. The wife was not impressed with her drink, she said it tasted like low end tequila with grocery store bought sweet and sour. We ordered our food, calamari and crab cakes. we waited and waited. during our wait we were serenaded by the ear piercing shrieks of a small child that was allowed to run amok in the bar. Finally when our food arrived the calamari was stone cold and the crab cakes weren't much better, The crab cakes were also mushy, not crisp at all. We waited, and waited for the waitress to return. During that time we were kept entertained by the drunk idiot at the bar who kept going out to his "Harley" and revving it up not 15 feet away from the outdoor dining crowd. Nothing like ringing ears and the nauseating smell of exhaust fumes to make your already crappy food taste even better. Oh yes and during all this time not one employee stepped up to talk with the parents of the uncontrolled child or to tell the drunk biker to knock it off. When the waitress did arrive to finally check on us I said my wife's calamari was stone cold, and she just scooped it up and said let me get you another order, she didn't seem surprised that the dinner was cold, I'm guessing this must happen a lot. I went after her a moment later to get the order to go as the drunk biker was getting up to go rev his "scooter" again. When I got to the service area there were 6 people standing around joking with each other. No wonder the food was cold. I told her that I wanted it "to go", and waited again. Finally I got the food, she gave a half hearted apology about the food being cold and we left. We ended up just throwing it the trash as we walked away, we were so disgusted. Save your money, there are better seedy bars to eat at than here. read more

I woukld give Rick's Reef 6 stars if I could. As a resident of the area I'm often in St Pete Beach and I have perhaps 60 or 70 bars and restaurants to choose from. Rick's is, without a doubt, my favorite establishment. The food is not your typical bar fare but rather beautifully prepared using only fresh ingredients. As an example the french fries are prepared in the Belgium manner, hand cut daily and then"double flash fried". They are simply crispy deliciousness. The smoked BBQ is made on the premises by the owner and is the best on the beach. The fish is local and as fresh as it gets. Perhaps the nicest aspect of Rick's is the staff. Terry was our waitress a few weeks ago and Misty served us just a few days ago. Both are just as friendly as can be and always making sure that everything is just perfect. There's a fine line between being overly attentive and ignoring the customers. Both Terry and Misty have waitressing down to an art form and we always look forward to seeing them when we're at the beach! Finally, the cleanliness of Ricks is something that I really appreciate. The place is always spotless and that says a lot about the owner and the staff. read more
