Under new management as of a few years ago, the food here is amazingly delicious. Only issue with the place is that they no longer use plates. Everything is in a to go box. Not sure how anyone can give this place anything less than 4 stars. The price alone for the amount of good food and the options you can pick from demands at least that. I gave it a 5 because I usually get the 3 item combo with whatever I'm feeling and I usually take home about half of it since there's so much. 2 meals for about $8 is a steal for this area. If you get all fancy like I usually do, it'll go up to about $1 but that means you're getting things like eel rolls. Just to end it to make people don't this this about the price, everything also tastes good and the sushi here, while not as good as super high end $40/meal caught your fish right now spots, is much better than a lot of places I've been. read more

The best deal in town! My friends and I have been coming here for years as it's affordable and tasty. We're from Hawaii, so this place is super similar to plate lunch places that we find at home. There's a small lot in front of the shop to park. I've found parking there every time but it can get crowded occasionally. You order your food at the register and then grab a seat in the back. Free water cups on the side too. The owner is a cute older man who works at the register/on the floor. He helped to clear us a table because he noticed that we had four people and there was only one open table. It was surprisingly crowded for a Wednesday night. The best deal is the two or three choice sets for $6 - $8. I usually get the karaage chicken, chicken katsu, and the spicy tuna three choice set for around $9. Each comes with rice, and salad and sesame dressing. They have different menu options to choose from. Some choices are more expensive so you add 50 cents or $1 to the base price. It's such a great deal and it lasts me for lunch the next day. Some other choices are tempura, sesame chicken, other types of sushi. This past time I decided to try the ginger chicken plate. I'd give this dish 3 stars. I was expecting a Chinese cold ginger chicken, but it was more like chicken with sauce and some green onions and one ginger. A bit disappointing but it was only $7. I would opt for the three choice meal because you get a good variety of dishes for the same price! Overall, I'm giving this place 5 stars because it's the best place to get a cheap meal that tastes so good. While the quality may not be the best, it gets the job done! If you're looking for a restaurant that's a bang for your buck this place won't disappoint. The price is very reasonable for their portion size. The menu is extensive. I've tried their 2 item combos with sesame chicken and spicy california roll and also their tempura udon. My only complaint is that my california roll kept falling apart. I loved the udon though. I got the combo plate with tofu teriyaki, veggie gyoza, and inari sushi with a side of white rice and their house salad. It was super filling and delicious, especially the tofu teriyaki (it was fried to perfection--slightly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside omg yes). I would come back for just a plate of the tofu teriyaki since I have tried and failed to make my own tofu with this consistency (It's almost like the consistency of agedashi tofu). I was a little nervous that they messed up my order since the veggie gyoza looked like it had chunks of meat in it, so I gave them to a family member. I was still pleasantly satisfied with my food. This place is a South Bay institution. Been coming here since high school and the menu is pretty much the same ever since. Quality of food is always consistent. I always get the salmon teriyaki plate and the fish is cooked perfectly each time, which is a big deal because many places overcook it. I love the sesame dressing they use in the salad, it's umami- sweet and tangy and salty. I would say the plates are their specialty here. I tried the sushi rolls and while they are good, other place might do them better or have bigger portions. You can't go wrong with the traditional Japanese dishes - plates, noodles, etc. Also I like how they make it easy to order through google maps. There is parking since they are in a plaza but it can get crowded during lunch hour. They allow indoor and outdoor sitting, but they don't have as many tables as they used to. read more

I'm going to try to make this review short and to the point. This used to be one of my favorite places to eat. Here's the reason for the one star review: 1. I absolutely hate it when I order food anywhere and they solicit me for a tip before I've received any kind of service whatsoever as if I'm supposed to bribe them for good service or something. I hate that stupid iPad they flip at me when my lunch is already $20. 2. I ordered a combo for dine in hoping a table would free up while I was waiting for my food however my shrimp tempura, chicken teriyaki and spicy tuna roll was somehow ready 30 seconds after I ordered it. So now I'm forced to sit outside, in the hot sun on a metal table reflecting the sun in my face with no shade because one of the employees is enjoying her break on one of the five indoor dining tables that were being occupied. 3. My spicy tuna roll looked like it was packaged at a gas station inside a plastic container, one single soy sauce strapped to it and no wasabi included. 4. As I'm outside sweating all over my food and the table I notice there is no tempura dipping sauce. I'm trying to figure out why they gave me a side of teriyaki sauce when my chicken was already drenched in it. 5. My shrimp tempura looked like it was deep fried in some kind of pancake batter. I wondered if management had ever even been to another Japanese restaurant let alone Japan. I would have gone inside and requested the things I was missing but I didn't feel right about leaving my food for the birds and flys to eat while talking to the employees. There's a good amount of seating indoors with plenty of natural light, but can get cramped at peak hours. Food: Great portion for what you pay! Not the same! I have been coming here for at least 15 years and im so sad to say that over the last year this place has gone waaaay down. I used to be able to get 2 2 item combo plates for less than $20 and now its over $30 with SMALLER portions. The quality isnt even as good and niether is the service. So sad to see this place do bad. It was always very special to me because my dad and I would go here together. I was sad to see the awful re decoration of the restaurant but even more sad for the change in food quality. It had become a tradition for my family to come here on his birthday and anniversary of his passing each year and now that is ruined. I've been wanting to come to Rice Things for a while now. I heard so many mixed opinions about this place even prior to reading yelp reviews here. The menu is extensive to the point where it maybe overwhelming if it's your first time. The menu is also plastered all over the wall, in front of the cashier and to the side of the cashier. I heard the combos are huge and you get a great deal for your money. But I really can't wolf down that much food in one sitting nor willing to take left overs to eat later (especially if its tempura or sushi which I'm assuming will not stay fresh). I ordered "Lean Chicken Spicy Teriyaki with brown rice." I read on their menu the brown rice was $0.50 extra. However I was charged $1.00 instead. When I asked, the girl said it only applied for a "combo". **So mental note: the bigger your food portion, the better the deal** The chicken spicy teriyaki was very good, I have to admit. However.....I'm guessing they used a TON OF SUGAR as the sauce was overly sweet (more so than the teriyaki I've had at most restaurants). I'm sure many people will not mind the sweetness as sugar, after all is addictive and makes everything taste delicious. But If you're watching your figure or have diabetes, pls do not get the teriyaki. I had a ton of chicken left over and the rice was gone. The sauce is very thick and heavy and you need a lot more rice than what they give you. Overall not the best fit for me.....but it might as well be a great place for people looking to eat great tasting food for a good deal. read more

It's a little hard to review this local institution. The food is tasty and the portions are hefty but at times there are small things that make me not come as often as I'd like. The good is the food and the large portions, you cannot go wrong for the price. I usually make some adjustments like ask for brown rice as a side and have my California rolls made out of brown rice as well. The steamed dumplings are pretty standard but when combined with everything it's pretty awesome. I always get chicken teriyaki with the sauce on the side. It also comes with a delicious salad with pretty amazing dressing. So if you're in the area and want some good food at a affordable price make sure to check this place out. read more

I saw a lot of great reviews for this place, so we decided to try it out. Our experience was "OK" but maybe we just ordered the wrong things. As other reviewers stated, their menu is HUGE and can be a bit overwhelming to decide what to get. I felt a bit rushed when ordering and ended up with a 2-item plate of sesame chicken (a bit chewy and tough) and vegetable tempura (a bit greasy). We also had some gyoza which again, was OK but not something that would bring us back, necessarily. So the food was a bit "meh." Prices were good, $5.98 for a 2-item plate with water only, $7.28 for 2-item plate with a drink. Can't get better than that for the variety, if that's what you like. Service was OK, not super-friendly but not mean or anything. The small restaurant was clean with several small tables all squished in, but everyone was nice and the place was calm. Parking lot is small but we didn't have trouble finding a space. Bonus: they use paper straws, if you are into reducing plastic in the world. read more

Delicious and economical Japanese food, and excellent service. But now... We stopped in for the usual 2 item combo and a sushi roll. HORRIBLE! I guess from reading the reviews someone else in the family has taken over. They need some intensive tutoring sessions. The chicken teriyaki was dry, and it was dark meat! Absolutely no teriyaki sauce on top or on the side. The crunch roll was disgusting. Soggy shrimp tempura inside, and so much cucumber you couldn't taste much else. Top it off with some strange looking sauce inside. I can't even describe the Eel roll. I couldn't even convince myself to try it. South Bay Rice Things, I'm begging you to take it back to the way things were. Or, at least ask your elders how to do this. I'm not some person that makes it their business to write bad reviews. Popular family owned Japanese place. Good food, good portions, and at good prices. This place has a line going out the door on weekends and high traffic hours. Food can take a while as it is made fresh to order. I had the miso katsu and it is delicious and righteously priced unlike the over priced sushi places in town who charge way too much for simple katsu.
