I adore this place. I would open a franchise closer to where I live, if I could. In a tiny strip mall next to a liquor store, you'll see the lunch crowd of people in business casual clothes (if you work for one of the defense companies, you probably already know about this place). Don't let it deter you, because service is fast and the tables turn over quickly. The menu is a bit overwhelming with millions of possible combinations (slight exaggeration, but I'm sure it's close) for lunch. I always get the 2-item combo, and end up full and with a box to take home. The bang for your buck here is unlike almost anything else. For $6 or $7, you can have a huge plate with two generous entrees, including a sushi roll if you'd like, rice, and salad. Today I got the salmon roll and teriyaki beef. The salmon was generously cut into big pieces, seemed freshly made, and was nothing you could confuse for supermarket sushi. No, it isn't the best sushi you'll have in your life, but to get that WITH so many other items for such a low price makes me want to drive out here from Westwood for lunch every day. Almost. You don't go here for the ambiance (you wouldn't expect it by looking at the strip mail it is contained by) and the tables are pushed so close together that you really need to control your conversations, but you go for quick, delicious, cheap food. The portions are hefty and it also comes with a salad so you will definitely get your bucks worth for it. As of the moment they only do take out. The only complaint i have is the chicken teriyaki isn't fully cook on the inside and one of the cuts is kinda super rubbery so im not sure if they rush cooking or its not a fresh chicken that they used. Ordered food for pickup. Had the combo plate with teriyaki and katsu. Teriyaki chicken was moist and tasty but the additional sauce had a stronger garlic flavor. Up to you how little or how much you want to add Katsu was done well also, fully cooked and not dry. Had packet for the standard otafuku sauce. Instinct was to give a 4, but that's my bias because it's not a fancy place. I didn't have any issues with long wait or bad interaction with staff. read more

It's reliable as a local neighborhood option for Japanese food for the residents in the area, and is somewhat legendary for those who used to live here and come back or those in the surrounding area who venture over here as well. You can eliminate the carbs of the white rice and request double salad with your combination platter, which is also a lot less filling, as the portions are fairly generous in size, so a 2 item is filling and a 3 items typically results in asking for a box to take leftovers for another meal. Parking is easy in the lot or surrounding neighborhood streets. I recommend this place to many, as it's a good quality meal for roughly $10 or less. read more

I had been coming here regularly for the past year, sometimes two or three times a week and I loved it. Sadly, that has changed now, like many others, with the ownership and menu change. Theyve tried about three different versions of the menu now, adding some good new items, and keeping some of the classics, but sadly getting rid of some of the good ones. They also increased the prices by almost double, and even feels like they reduced portion sizes. Like many I dont like the new salad dressing, and they were even closed for a few days this month without any explanaition. I understand trying to modernize the business and increasing prices; but theyve increased the prices too much without increasing the size or quality of food. Like everyone else has been saying: portions are smaller, prices are higher, quality of food isn't as good AND they don't serve the Miso Dressing! I would be happy to pay higher prices for what they use to serve, but we won't be coming back As for the service, all was ok with our order, but in the 5 min I was there picking up, they couldn't find one guy's order and told him "sorry, I don't see it" - another couple was said they had been waiting a long time - and their staff looked like they were running around in circles, not really doing anything as there were only a few in the restaurant. I have been going here for 15 years. It appears to have new ownership. The prices have gone up by about 20% and the quality of the food seems to be less tasty. The california rolls have some weird mix mash of crap in it when it was delicious and lively before. The assortment of items is all off; this place was a like a religion before and now its competing with places at a higher price point and I feel like they will bleed customers. I've been going to rice things for 5+years. It has always been one of my favorite spots and would have certainly gotten 5 stars from me previously, but the vibe and old favorites are gone. There's new leadership and a new manager. He's very nice but perhaps doesn't get the nostalgia and appreciation people had for what made Rice things great: High quality food, affordable prices, vast selection, and family ran vibe. Overview: -They have removed 80% of the menu - they removed everyone's favorite miso dressing :( - they have gone from re-usable cups and actual silverware to plastic disposable ones and cheap throw away plastic utensils (environment anyone?) -super California rolls are gone (my favorite-was actual Crab) -decor is now plain white walls , tore down wood accents. -prices are up (that's fine i could live with that if the menu would have stayed similar) -seems to be staffing less people, orders are taking longer. I used to visit weekly and now I'd say I'll go monthly at best unless things change. While I like the new manager, i don't think he should be telling people to their face that they're trying to increase profit (heard this multiple times on my visit) Shouldn't the goal be to improve service , food quality, customer satisfaction? Anyways, I'm hopeful they'll adjust and make it more like the old experience. read more

Im always rooting for smaller "hole-in-the-walls", but this one visit back was enough to know I wont be returning. New ownership, like everyone is saying. The owners retired, and their kids have taken over. Now, I've been coming to Rice Things for nearly 20 years. It's a staple for affordable Japanese food in the area, and it's always been incredible. I'm angry I have to write this, because I've been so fiercely loyal for years. When we came in, the first thing we noticed was that 3/4ths of the menu is gone and that the prices of everything went up. I understand the necessity of raising prices, but here's where it got messed up: they cut their portions by half. I've been ordering sushi dons since I was in like 8th grade, which was nearly 15 years ago. The rice was halved, and I got three slices of sashimi. Their quality of sashimi has gone down as well, so there's literally nothing to justify the raised price. And to top it off, everything is an upcharge. It's not like before, where you could get a three item combo and a drink and have miso soup as a choice. The miso soup is something you have to get separately, and the drink as well. They took away the glasses they used to have stacked by the soda machine for waters and instead give you those little dinky single use plastic cups--also, SO BAD for the environment. The new staff is garbage too. We literally sent our food back and demanded a refund, and walked out. I've NEVER done that. Congrats, you guys lost two lifelong customers. This is one of the few times where Yelpers have let me down. How can I best describe their fare - 7Eleven quality? Food Court grade? Sushi for people who don't eat sushi? These all apply. We ordered tempura veggies, tempura shrimp, crunch roll, and a spicy tuna roll. First, the food took WAAY too long. A good 30 mins before they brought over our food. The tempura was already room temp and soggy. The rolls were basically California Roll variations. The "crunch roll" was basically a Cali roll with tempura shrimp in the middle. It's supposed to be covered in the crunch flakes. There are so many better places to choose from, the only reason we stopped here is because they were still open at 9pm on a Sunday. Next time we'll just make the trek to Gardena and find something better! read more

I grew up going to rice things.... It was known for good food at a cheap price. I remember when they had to raise their prices a dollar and they put up signs apologizing for the food cost increases... Now with the new management and owners they have increased the costs.... decreased the amount of food... and thought no one would be upset and would be happy to pay more for less food... They have removed the miso dressing and decreased the amount of lettuce you get (must really be pinching pennies) and decreased the amount of rice. All while starting at a higher price point. When you walk in they have removed all the paneling on the walls in favor of white walls.... it looks very sterile, bland and boring... RIP rice things.... I dont think I would ever go back for the prices they are charging and the quality of food. I was perfectly happy with the quality of food but when you jump the price 4-5 bucks a meal and no longer include a drink they start to compete with other restaurants that are putting out a higher quality product. read more

I've been coming to this place since I got married which was in 2002. My husband introduced me to this place. If you get the 3 item combo it's large enough to share or share with your children. The prices and the taste are great. Whenever we come down from the Bay Area there are always a few places we have to stop and eat and this is one of them. Ever since this place changed owners, it was all down hill. The food is decent and all when you do take out. But customer service at this establishment is horrific. Today at lunch, i was kicked out of a table because the man in charge told me that for parties of 3, we have to fit in 1 tiny table. Mind you, the restaurant is empty. I was already sitting at the table (shown in pic 1) and he was like "nonono, party of 3 is for 1 table" as I look around, there are people of 1 at a table and a ton of empty tables. Also, we bought our food separately, its not like we bought it all at once. He then forced the waitress to put my food in the table with my friends where i wasn't sitting which forced me to stand up and move to their table. What kind of place treats their customer this way. I even said, excuse me, this is ridiculous, were gonna be cramped in the table. I was livid. I used to be a regular customer at this place but now, i will not be coming back. If you keep treating your customers like this, you will loose them. I will not be disrespected and treated that way. If you wan't to be talked down to, this is the place for you. Rice Things is a great option for takeout when you are exhausted and cooking or a frozen meal is the last thing on your mind. The portion sizes are pretty generous and the pricing is good. They were very busy when I tried them out so my recommendation is to call in ahead and then pick-up. We walked there from home and after ordering waited almost 25 mins for a chicken katsu plate, and 2 sushi rolls. They were really busy that evening, which I think happens a lot. They also have a lot of variety in their menu (combos etc), which I loved. I think it is a great place to have in the area. Take out, cheap, lots of food = happy. Usually come here for a quick fix when we are craving chicken katsu. It's close to home and convenient. This place isn't fancy - more of a take out / fast-food feel. The workers are friendly. We usually see new faces every time we come - young kids working for the summer or so... The portions are generous for the price. We paid about $25 and got: 2 x Chicken Katsu Plate 2 x Spicy Tuna Handroll Our chicken katsu felt a bit thin and not much meat but it wasn't terrible. A good amount of rice and side salad. This is a bit of a mom and pop place that has been in our neighborhood for years.... It's recently changed owners, but things are still great and the food is always super tasty!! The food at Rice Things is always pretty good. This used to always be the spot after a beach day. Now, I stop by once in a while if I'm feeling like a little combo. They have plenty of choices on the menu. The only thing that I don't like is the different pricing levels if you want certain things. It makes things more simple if you just charge one price for a 2 or 3 item combo and have a set price. Now, you have a base price for the 2 or 3 item combo and then depending what you want it can be an additional $0.49, $0.89 or $1.29 per item. The location itself is pretty small. A few tables, but this isn't the kind of place that you should come to if you have more than 6 people. Even with 6 it might get kind of tight. Service: The service is pretty good. It's not a full service restaurant, so you have to put your order in at the register and get your own drink and find a seat. They will bring out your food for you and clean up your dishes after. Food: Spicy chicken teriyaki: Add on onions and ask for them to chop up the chicken into smaller pieces. My friend who works here told me that and it tastes much better since the sauce can soak into the chicken better. Also, the added onions make it taste a lot better and give it more flavor and an additional texture. Beef teriyaki: I've only got the beef teri here once before, but it was very good. It was nice and tender. Croquette: The croquette here is cooked perfectly. Nice crunchy outside and a soft inside. It's great if you don't know what other item to get. Gyoza: The gyoza is good here as well. I don't believe they hand make them, but gyoza is always good. One gyoza order comes with 5 pieces. Beef katsu: The beef katsu here is okay. I've had better, but after The Loft stopped selling their version of the beef katsu, this is the only place to get it that I know of. Sesame chicken: It's okay here. Sushi Island has better sesame chicken. All the rolls: California, spicy California, spicy tuna and crunchy roll are all good. Overall, Rice Things is a great place to come for lunch at a reasonable price. Large selection if you come with a group of people that want a nice selection on the menu. read more
