This is hands down some of the freshest, highest-quality sushi I've had in the South Bay -- maybe even in all of LA! From start to finish, every dish was beautifully presented and unbelievably delicious. The sashimi platter was perfection -- thick, buttery cuts of salmon, tuna, scallops, octopus, and more. You can literally taste how fresh everything is. The Amaebi (sweet shrimp) was so delicate, and they even served the shrimp heads crispy, which was amazing! They do not respect younger customers. My partner and I got seated in front of the doors for dinner. I'm a local and it was the coldest day in redondo for me, it was cloudy, windy with no sun. We first ordered our drinks and while we looked through their menu, we had to deal with the big breeze every time a customer opened the door and it would stay stuck open. It had been going on for 10 mins, where the door would get closed and a customer would open it and get stuck open. So my partner nicely asked the manager if we can move our seats since there were some open tables. She dismissed our request by saying "we don't have anymore seating" when there clearly was a couple of open tables. Then as we waited, we asked to finally order our food. The manager treated us like a pushover and pointed at the busy waitress on the register and said, "she'll take your order." The waitress disappeared after leaving the register (we were seated right in front of register waiting for her the whole time, didn't even look at us or tell us she'll come back). We fiddled with our drinks and waited another 10 mins for the manager to fast walk to us like a last minute thought to take our order. Later, an older couple walked in and immediately got seated where we asked to get seated, It wasn't even their reservation. Shortly after, it gets worse, the manager opens BOTH doors wide open in front of us like the gates of heaven. It was so ridiculous that we only could laugh. We had to ask them to close the doors because we were SHIVERING, it was so windy. The waitress closed both doors but the manager told her to leave one open. I assume they did this to let more customers in. The manager doesn't care about her customers, just the amount of them. Other than that the food was good, sushi was fresh, a lil pricy, but the service was the worst I've ever seen, so I had to leave a review. Not worth a dinner date but a quick spot to grab food. The lunch Bento boxes and bowls are reasonably priced, if you want to try them out and not spend $$$. I got a Bento Box, with an avocado roll, veggie roll and upgraded my third option to a nigiri assortment. My friend got a Beef Yakiniku Bowl, which was a very large portion that comes with tender beef and fresh veggies on top of white rice (and you have the option of an egg on top). One person serves you drinks but can't take a food order, one takes the food order but can't bring it out, even as a couple they bring the food out separate so ended up eating at separate times. As we were looking around for Japanese restaurants open late, we were torn between Fin and Japonica, but I'm SO glad we chose Yamashiro! From start to finish, the service and food were incredible!! My friend ordered an unagi bowl while I ordered the Premium Sushi Deluxe, which came with a beautifully presented selection of fish -- salmon, tamago, unagi, tuna, yellowtail, octopus, and ebi -- along with crispy tempura shiso leaves, salad, and miso soup. It was fresh, delicious and plentiful! That evening, there happened to be only one chef working, but the staff went above and beyond to make it special. They surprised us with a huge grilled ono collar, cooked and seasoned to perfection, and then a piece of fresh halibut sashimi over rice, and even treated us to a tiramisu at the end--that was SO rich and delectable!! Both the head waitress and our server Cindy were incredibly attentive, kind, and genuinely sweet. They made us feel so welcome and taken care of the entire night. This is my second time here, and the service is always fast; the servers are nice and attentive. It's a nice, cozy spot with light music playing in the background. The owner (I think was the person who spoke to us) was so sweet and informative regarding the food and drinks. We got an albacore double-double roll, which was excellent and had a nice crunch on top. We came with friends last year and didn't love our experience (service took forever, they didn't tell us what rolls were what, we ended up missing a few items, and they never checked on us for more drinks). BUT we decided to give it another try on our own last week. Their happy hour is buy one roll get one 50% off; but each roll is about $20-25 which kind of defeats the purpose of happy hour. The sushi tasted great and their portions are okay, but we feel it's a bit overpriced. Service was nice as well this time around. The ambience is really calm, but when we first walked in we were hit by that weird bathroom-was-just-cleaned smell. We got used to it eventually. Asaka is one of those sushi places that looks ordinary but is anything but that. The attention to detail in presentation as well as the hostess (who kept giving us amazing little treats throughout dinner) made our night. We enjoy Asaka each time we come here and all of the customers seem to be repeat customers. The presentation was amazing on the Fancy Roll but my favorite was the Cowboy roll with the seared salmon. The sashimi plate was good but I wasn't a fan of the large portion of Krab (fake crab) and found it a little odd. T'was sushi date night once again with my hubs. Tonight we ordered the regular rainbow roll - a must have staple when we come to Asaka (consistently good)! I ordered the Crunchy Tuna Tataki roll, has crispy fried onions on top. My husband ordered the Hollywood roll, which has cream cheese in it & he said it was great. To end the night, we shared a slice of matcha cheesecake. Asaka always has kind staff and they are very doting to make sure you're well taken care of.
