Outstanding service and delicious, authentic Mexican food! My personal favorite dinner is the Chicken & Cheese Flautas. We always order the Pico de Gallo appetizer, which is always very fresh and tasty. Beware the yummy Queso dip--it's addictive too! The takeout is also quick, and the value and portions are excellent for the price. True, it's not very big and it's BYOB, but we go for the food, not to hang out or drink. Rey Azteca is my favorite restaurant in Butler. We have been going every week for a few years now, and I've never been disappointed. Love the delicious food and excellent service at Rey Azteca. Just had a take out order a few days ago. Carnitas for me and Enchiladas for the Hubby. The carnitas were tender and the verde salsa was perfect. The Hubby was very happy with the enchiladas. The sauce was delicious and it smelled delicious. I love eating here and also do take out when I need it. They also have online ordering and paying to make take out even more convenient. We will be back again soon. read more

Overpriced to what you get. Food is ok but many dishes are pretty expensive for cheap ingredients. 14 bucks for flautues they are good but they are just soft tacos with cheese on top. Service is ok, in general I would rather go to moes and pay less and get more. read more

The absolute best Mexican north of Pittsburgh, in my opinion. I drive 45 minutes just to get the mole poblano. Superb, complex flavors developed and a great heat to kick it into overdrive. I've tried mole sauces in several other locations in the area, and none of them are in the same league. The portions are generous, so I always have enough for a second meal. The new location looks great inside, reminds me of Mexico. The wait time for lunch to come out was adequate, (quite quick,) food was great as usual and the staff was very friendly. Okay, weirdness to ensue. My family and I owned this restaurant back in the 90's when virtually no one in Butler, PA ate Chinese and we were pretty much the only Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. My dad is a great cook, but no one came because kids would freak out about "WHAT'S AN EGGROLL? EW!" and my parents bringing sweet and sour chicken for snack time had kids weirded out and crying for chips or fruit roll up. I came back for the first time since we moved away for a little nostalgia tour and went to my old home, the Giant Eagle, drove by skate castle (which is tragically closed for the summer!!!) and was able to figure out the address of our old place by googling Bill's Beer Barn (who can forget they hung out next to a "Beer Barn" for most of their childhood?). While on our way there, we joked about "it might be a Mexican restaurant now!" And sure enough, it's a Mexican restaurant much to my amusement. We had to go inside for dinner because I was dying of curiousity of how it's like. So according to the plaques inside, they're a voter's choice Mexican restaurant. Now, back when I was here, the only "Mexican" place was Chi Chi's and funny enough they shut down after a massive Hep A breakout (how scary). They were much more crowded than we usually were, and even had more booths installed because they have that many more customers. However, looking up at the stucco walls and the hidden pagoda over the new thatched roof I see the remnants of what used to be a Chinese restaurant. We get seated right where we used to keep the Christmas tree and a buffet table. *TEAR TEAR TEAR* Where I've been living the past ... i don't know, 11 years? We have about a 40% hispanic population nevermind the fact that there's a good chunk of undocumented individuals so try 50%. The tricky part is, despite us having a sizable Mexican population- a lot of the "hole in the wall" Mexican restaurants here are owned by Salvadorians who do not specialize in authentic Mexican restaurants (thus butcher Mexican food), or they're a more "upscale" Mexican place who caters to a more trendy crowd. Even though it's not remotely close to authentic Mexican I judge a place by its beef fajita because everyone and their mom eats beef fajitas and I want to know what warrants "Best Mexican Restaurant" two years in a row by the Butler Eagle. We were pleasantly surprised that there was a dedicated "vegetarian" section on the menu which is a rarity in the DC area. My vegan S.O. got the combo #9 sans cheese which was a spinach and potato enchillada. When my food came out, I have a feeling that the meat is pre-prepared on the side and they sautee some peppers and onions and cooked meat together when its ordered because to be quite honest it was dry and the food came out a little too quickly. The steak was a cheap cut of meat too, but it was a lot of food for $12 dollars so it wins the value card. My favorite place to get fajitas back home you're waiting at least 20-30 minutes to get a skirt steak fajita but you're nursing a large margarita so time flies by quickly. I did not find a drink menu so I think this is an alcohol free establishment. My S.O. raved about the sauce on his enchiladas and was super excited about having a potato enchilada. He honestly said "this is the best Mexican food I've had since moving (from the South)" a decade ago. I had a recent trip to Fort Worth, Texas and I have to agree the Mexican food here is more on par with what you get in Texas than what's in DC. Being a popular self-made Mexican restaurant out in Butler PA has a lot of merit, especially one that serves food that is virtually like its right out of Texas in an area with an almost non-existent Hispanic population. read more

This was my first time eating mexican food since returning to Pennsylvania after a 6 year hiatus in Arizona. I was shocked when I dug in to my meal and the quality was excellent. They food was fresh served up quickly and fairly priced. I was disappointed that they charge for hot sauce and extra chips but since that changed recently I assume the locals were taking advantage. I won't take off a star for a business trying to stay alive in-spite of patrons plundering hot sauce and shoppers snatching chips. read more

The staff was nice, but I was sorely disappointed in the quality of the food. Rey Azteca is Butler's premier Mexican resturant. I know that isn't really saying much, but somehow in the past 3 years there's been a proliferation of Mexican restaurants in town. Used to be that your choices were Chi Chi's or Taco Bell. That's definitely changed. Rey's was the first (that I know of) of the family owned restaurants in town. Pros: Spanish-speaking servers, excellent food, Mr. Pibb, rather inexpensive, take-out. Cons: not enough people know about this place, it's a little small on the inside, the fried ice cream is merely ok. I would really give it 4.5 stars, but this will have to make do. read more

Excellent rustic interior Mexican restaurant. I have been to the border and this place is as good as the best I've had their. I haven't had all menu items but every one I had was great. My favorite is the Burrito Cancun with the Steak Burrito a close second. The Spanish Rice and Refried Beans are also excellent. The complimentary salsa and chips are done in house. Well, i guess I'm a little spoiled with the GOOD AUTHENTIC mexican, that I eat way too often.... because I was repulsed with the food that I was served. Where do I start? The queso was white and runny. I ordered a fajita with beef, chicken and shrimp. The shrimp was pretty good, but the chicken and the steak were so overcooked and dry that I could barley rip through it with my teeth. It came with a TINY pinch of cheese, that i barely could get across my first tortilla... it didn't come with any pico de gallo or tomatoes (thats apparently extra) And the rice was mushy and sticky. My boyfriend ordered a Combo with a burrito, an enchillada, and a tamale. He asked for a side of refried beans (which was an extra 2 dollars for a blob of flavorless beans.) The tamale was soft. The only good part about our experience was that the food came out very quickly (cause it clearly sits in a steamer all night long, to be scooped onto a plate after its all dried out and chewy). Almost everything was overcooked and the service was blah... just about as bland and flavorless as the food. I am editing my review. I do like this place but the last 3 times I went there the meat was dry in my chicken flauta. The flavor is still there and the service is excellent so I never complain. Even when they overcook this food it is still way better than Taco Bell. My only other complaint is that the parking lot could be paved. It is currently muddy and uneven. read more

Dined here recently with some friends still living in my old hometown and was considerably impressed by the authentic quality of their Mexican fare. While it is not quite as good as many of the bountiful Latino options availble to me on the MD/VA area, it is easily one of the best Mexican dining options in Western PA. Keep in mind that this is NOT Tex-Mex, which is what too many Americans imagine Mexican food is supposed to be given that is what all the major chains have been serving to dumbed-down US diners for years. Rather, this is true south-of-the-border fare that you typically only find in bigger cities with only minor adjustments made for Yankee palates. For a small town like Butler to have such an ethnically sound option is a giant leap ahead for the local culinary profile. read more

"I know real Mexican food" wtf? This place is maintained by Mexicans and it is absolutely authentic. I have no idea who owns it and I could not possibly care less. Service has always been amazing. The prices are great for the amount (and quality) of food you receive. Currently living in Brooklyn, NY and I haven't been able to find a Mexican restaurant that compares. Not to mention the time I was living in Los Angeles and had to go all the way to East LA to find a decent Mexican meal. The chips and salsa great. I ordered the spicy chicken enchiladas with cheese sauce and it was disappointing. The chicken was bland and there was a bone in it. I told our waitress who was less than enthusiastic during our whole entire meal. She didn't apologize as I took two whole bites of my meal. She brought me the check with the charge on it and made no attempt to take it off. I had to ask the cashier to take it off. There was a waiter who seemed nice and enthusiastic. Love this place for mexican food! The food is awesome and service is great. I moved to Pittsburgh from California, so I do feel I have had some of the best mexican food to compare with this place. Just a bummer that there's only a few locations because the other mexican restaurants in new castle and cranberry do not have my fave dish: the pork carnitas with the verde sauce. If you like spicy food, definitely get the verde sauce. The pork in the carnitas is so soft as if it was braised or slow cooked. You don't need a knife, it will just fall off. I've tried other dishes off the menu, and none has disappointed me so far. The servers are very attentive and nice. The food comes out fast and hot. read more

I have been going to Rey Azteca for years and am really happy that they moved into the location of their other restaurant La Casa. The restaurant is bright & much more spacious than their old location, however they still serve the same great food! We always get the same thing, chicken & steak combo fajitas for two and the chori queso. I also recently got take out from here and it was great. read more
