Awesome cafe! This place is conveniently located right outside the gate of Fort MacArthur (where I stayed for a weekend). A friend and I went on a Saturday around 1030, expecting there to be a long wait. But we were seated right away. The menu was a little overwhelming as there are many choices, including what comes as sides. It took the waitress awhile to get our order but we didn't have to wait too long for it to arrive. My friend ordered the chorizo scramble and I got the Rex omelet. Both of us got fresh fruit and he opted for a pancake. Everything was delicious! Good sized portions and everything tasted fresh. Loved that the fruit came in a big bowl instead of those dinky little cups you get at other restaurants. Best place in San Pedro for breakfast! Although it is a little smaller and can crowded at times, that is obviously a clear indication of how good this cafe is. The staff is super friendly and accommodating, yet more importantly the food is spot-on. The breakfast burrito is primetime, especially with the unique black bean chili and fresh salsa. The pancakes were enormous and the side of fruit was more like a giant bowl of fresh delicious fruit (includes strawberries bananas blueberries; more than just your basic melon and honeydew side dish). This was a recommendation from a friend. Very good little place. Simple decor and good food. The bacon and eggs were good, fresh fruit, the spinach portobello omelet was good stuff, the machaca and eggs was tasty, and the blueberry whole wheat pancake was nice. As far as the food goes, it's great taste and quality breakfast! Everything was super fresh and well cooked. BUT if you don't mind the crammed sitting area and okay service then you're good to go. It's simple: I love this place! Everything is extremely fresh and made from fresh ingredients-no frozen junk or food sitting under a heat lamp here! I've had the breakfast burrito, which is a refreshing spin on a fast food/taco truck classic. It's a huge portion! A wonderfully soft tortilla with just the right amount of chew is filled with hash browns (which are not soggy, my usual compliant of burritos...these are crispy!), turkey bacon (you can order pork bacon), cheese, and fluffy scrambled eggs. Its not a hand-held burrito, so it's topped with sour cream and avocado slices. It's heavenly! Served with retried beans AND your choice of rice, potatoes or fresh fruit. The fresh fruit is a HUGE bowl of melons, grapes, kiwi, bananas, fresh pineapple. The burrito is particularly wonderful with their salsa verde! The Green Eggs Cabrillo is also fantastic! A delicious English muffin topped with sautéed spinach, Ham, tomato, Two wonderfully poached eggs and Jack cheese. Delicious! Their coffee is also great and refills are prevalent. Passing through the area and found Rex's on Yelp. Great food!! Pancakes are huge & fluff with real maple syrup. Breakfast burito was stuffed full & served with avocado and salsa. The muffins were hot from the oven and smelled delicious. Fast service, too. Most tables are for parties of 2 or 4. We had a 10 minute wait, as the restraunt was busy, but very worth the wait. read more

The other half and I wanted to try something "UnDennys-like" and get away from the "NORM(S)" so we decided to "(I)HOP" to this local San Pedro cafe. It's fairly small but I think that's what I loved most about the place since it set off a really intimate vibe. I had breakfast there a couple of weeks ago, and wow was the food amazing! I don't get to San Pedro often but I will be back. I had the Chilaquiles verdes and they were delicious. The salsa verde was delicious. My friends had poached eggs and to quote them "That was the most perfectly poached egg I've ever had" the place is small, but the food is superb. The service is slow because of the volume of people (at least when I was there) but they are friendly and know the menu backwards and forwards. They make great suggestions too. read more

I went here today for breakfast. I was encouraged by the reviews I read online. There were a couple of other tables occupied on a Wednesday morning and the service was 5 star! It isn't cheap. Granted the portions are generous, but a cold drink, 2 blueberry pancakes and a side of bacon was nearly $20 with tax. We have reached a point in Southern Cal where even a basic breakfast is over $15 per person now before tip! Are food costs really that high? read more

We love Rex's. We come here so often I'd never think of writing a review. But they deserve it! Everything is excellent and the fruit bowls that come with entrees are a steal! Always fresh and RIPE fruit, even with kiwi and strawberries. All of the servers are great and are also sweet with our two young boys. Try it and you will not be disappointed! I eat at Rex's in San Pedro on a regular basis. I usually go with my good friend Chris. I must say Rex's has never skimped on food portions or quality ever. For example if you order pan cakes they are the size of a full meal plate and delicious. If you order a salad and soup or sandwich and soup combo the soup doesn't come in one of those tiny little cups!!! It comes in a decent size bowl!!! This is very rare. That leads me to their soups. OMG!! Rex's has some of the best soups around! I never liked split-pea soups with lots of beans, but they have turned my taste buds around! There isn't a single soup they make I don't like. They are all home made, believe me you can tell. They all hit the spot and are very savory especially on a cold day. If you love soup you gotta eat at Rex's!! I've never had anything I don't like. The service is good and attentive as well. The prices are very good too. If you compare similar type meals to other local diners you will usually get a better deal at Rex's on quality, portions and price. My only gripes are that for as long as I've gone there some of the servers still can't get my name right, and they don't open until 0700 am if they open at 0600 I'd eat there more, but that's ok. read more

Like most San Pedro restaurants this place is going downhill fast. Having a local customer base is great. But they end up getting comfortable sooo... I've been here 3 times, the first time it was great. 5 stars. Great chai tea great breakfast with large portions and attentive sweet waitresses. Reasonable prices also. The second time I was here I could see a definite lack of service and the food seemed to be slipping on the attention to detail. 3 stars. The last time, today. It was awful. My coffee was filled and not refilled until I got up to look for the waitress. The eggs Cabrillo was slopped together and not cooked how I ordered it. If the cook can't do medium don't offer. It was soft. The portions shrank by 50% the fruit I was givin was not ripe. my friends Chicken noodle soup was terrible and when she questioned the waitress about the okra and peppers that were in it she was blown off. After the meal was over I went to pay and the girl at the front gave me attitude saying "no one else ever complained about our soup" as she scratched it off the bill. I said "you know what I've never had? A waitress talk back to me like that. It's okay. I'll never come back" then all of a sudden she changed her tune. Oh I'm sorry blah blah blah. I'm sure there will be many more reviews just like this in the future. Service and food quality drop as locals deal with it because they get used to mistakes and poor service.
