I've been going to this Retro Fitness for over 10 years. Back then they even offered childcare, which was amazing for parents--I used to drop off my daughter and work out with total peace of mind. I mostly take classes and absolutely love Donovan and Marieliz's classes. They know exactly what they're doing and always give a great workout. Because of my schedule, I can't always join other classes, but whenever I had the chance, those were great too. The gym is overall clean, but by the end of the day it can get a bit crowded, especially when teens come after school, and it doesn't smell as fresh. Mornings and midday are definitely cleaner. The location is convenient, there's a big parking lot, and the hours are perfect. The membership is pretty affordable, and mine even lets me bring a guest--my teenage son comes with me all the time. After so many years here, I can honestly say I highly recommend this gym. read more

The vast array of machines will give your body that soreness it's been looking for, but the equipment seems very outdated. In addition, it's quite humid and hot to go with a certain smell that's not easy to breathe in... yeahhhh, going to be hard to hold your breathe in while you're getting a workout in a hot "funky" (smell) of a gym. My wife and I were members of Retro in Hackensack for 4 years. Management changed and we move to Planet Fitness. In person, we asked that Retro terminate our membership, and we were told that we needed to do that in writing and that we could email it to retrofitnessathackensack@gmail.com, which we did. Retro never terminated the membership and continued charging us. Once we noticed the charge, we contacted Retro and explained the situation. We were told that the email address we sent the cancellation email was incorrect. Not to debate as why we had an incorrect address, we just wanted a refund for charges since the date of the email we sent. Retro stated that they could see that we have not used their service since that date but would not refund the bogus charges. Everyone should know that this is the way they do business. read more

Really dissapointed! This is the gym of my dreams. Great atmosphere, crowd, love the layout and services. Very straight forward and fun. The one thing is the music is too claustrophobic. Within a minute of walking in I knew it was bugging me and tried to ignore or let it go but I really felt like I was going to have a panic attack. I tried to workout and 2 minutes into the gym after leaving the lockeroom, with my headphones on and the sound of the gyms music constantly "peaking" in the background I just grabbed my stuff and ran out. I they would just pick truly anything else, regular dance or hype music - regular rock, anything but that every 2 seconds hypey like the beats about to drop then it goes off again so often that you cant actually listen to anything. Idk what this genre is but you wont hear it in any real destination. This is coming from someone who tends to be pretty openminded and has a lot of friends playing across the citys clubs be it Bossa, Nowadays etc. I live for listening to dance and workout music. I used to go to this gym and it's not the best nor is it the worst BUT I just called to enroll again. They want to charge a mandatory consultation fee of $50, plus your member ship fee (which I'm fine with) plus the regular enrollment charge of $50. Why do I need to pay for a consultation to walk the treadmill? I walk everyday and know how to walk pretty good.. def another way to just scam people out of money. Lots of cardio machines that are separated from the free weight and machines area. Huge parking lot and I've always gotten lucky with spots right in front of the door, despite how busy the gym was. I squat a lot and their platform is slanted, which takes some getting used to. When I first started to use it, I felt myself leaning back more because of the tilt. With deadlifts, the bar rolls around more for me due to that too and I understand why people do it on the main floor instead. Also, you have to walk around looking for specific weight sizes. Really a bad idea, I'm part of a moms group with over 200 members in Fair Lawn and we are all disappointed to find out there's no gym near by that supports parents. Big fail. This rating is based on a few factors. Firstly, the STAFF is very welcoming and have good vibes. They don't make you feel as if you can't resolve simple issues. Wade/Wayne is a really good dude and is usually there in the morning and he's how gym workers should be really. I love that the dumbbells go up to 140. That's HUGE when you lift heavy. Some machines are old and they could definitely use some more leg machines, but at least they have enough 45 ib plates. Only gripes are that it gets really packed sometimes and not much to go around and you have to make due with whatever's available. And the times NEED to change. They open nice and early, but closing at 9 PM sucks unfortunately. Especially when you can't get shakes up till 9 and you gotta rush your workout on top of that. Other locations nearby close at 11 and 12 and it'd make sense for this location to close AT LEAST at 10. read more

First time here, I was looking for a new gym in the area and signed up for the guest pass to check it out. Valerie greeted me and gave me a tour of the gym. She's awesome!!! I love how there's 2 floors with cardio on both and GROUP CLASSES all days and times of the week. The VIP pass includes tanning, unlimited classes, and specials every month of the year (like 1/2 price protein bars) and stuff like that. TOTALLY WORTH IT IN MY opinion! Favorite part of this gym?! THE PROTEIN SHAKE BAR! And Valerie made me a free shake to try for signing up! I got chocolate peanut butter!! Sooo gooooood! Waaaay better than planet fitness (which I was a member of in the past). LONG, DETAILED REVIEW: I've been a VIP member here since March 2017. It's almost been a year and I'm seriously considering cancelling my membership and joining 24 Hour Fitness. Let's start with the pros first. -They have your average cardio equipment (treadmills, bikes, elliptical, stair master, etc). It gets super crowded during rush hour (5-7pm) so it may be hard to grab a machine. -FUN CLASSES! They offer classes every single day, usually in the mornings and evenings (6am-12pm) and (4pm-9pm). I've taken a bunch of classes here and the instructors are great. Highly recommend any of the Zumba classes, bootcamp, total body with Lauren, spinning, pilates, yoga, etc. -Decent amount of machines, free weights, and other circuit style equipment (bands, ropes, steps, mats) for a good workout. -Pretty cheap price. $24.99 for standard membership and $34.99 for VIP membership. -They just added a new membership for TEAM/STRONG members, which includes team building training sessions. It's pricey, but if you're willing to pay for that... go for it. -They do offer childcare and tanning if that interests you. I don't have children and I don't care for exposing myself to skin cancer, so I have no experiences to offer. -Their shakes are pretty good... Now on to the negatives... -parking lot SUCKS (small, potholes, Hackensack River floods during heavy rain)... but it's not really the gym's fault, I guess. -I have been to three other locations: Fair Lawn, Paramus and North Arlington. I actually think these locations are better than this one because they are CLEANER and more spacious. This location is a lot dirtier and is so cramped. The machines are all so close to one another and it's hard to navigate around the gym when it's busy. -Some machines and equipment are dirty, outdated, broken....etc. -Staff needs to be trained for better customer service skills. I do notice that the morning staff is a LOT nicer than the evening staff. Evening staff is a hit or miss. Some days they smile and acknowledge you, some days they looked pissed off and are always on their phones. They also barely check the gym floor to clean or re-rack anything. -I joined as a VIP membership, which includes childcare, tanning, classes, and monthly "perks" such as a free smoothie on a Monday or bringing a guest for free or a free PT session, etc. At the time I signed up, it cost extra to be a VIP member. I paid extra because I wanted to take the classes. However, the staff does NOT monitor who takes classes! A bunch of members take the classes who I'm sure are NOT VIP and are paying the cheaper standard membership. So, please get a better system to ensure fairness. I want to join 24 Hr Fitness because for the SAME PRICE that I pay here... I get a gym with better parking, bigger space, a pool, a cycle room, a basketball court, 2 studio rooms, bigger variety of classes, clean locker rooms with nice showers, towel service, sauna, jacuzzi attentive staff, fun events like master classes open to the public, etc... you get the idea. I'm grateful for Retro because I really did make a lot of great friends through the classes here but it's just not cutting it for me anymore. read more

This Retro is the worst I've been to and that speaks volumes. Here's why: The front desk staff is quite nice, except the woman with black rimmed glasses? I think she might be the manager. I asked her questions about my account and she rolled her eyes and groaned. Sorry, too busy to do your job? She alone makes this location unwelcoming with her scowl. Also, there has been a toddler behind the desk every now and then, what's that about? Not to mention the shirtless dude walking around, whaaaaa? I came to gym, not to watch a naked mole rat of a human shadow box in circles-- what an eye sore. As for the equipment, most everything is generally worn down, including the power rack platform (most significant). The platform is so severely damaged that a barbell can't rest properly on it without rolling downward. This is a safety hazard. At this point, they're better off partitioning that space and replacing the wood with horse stall mats because it's evident they don't plan on repairing/replacing. The classes there are great, but in other peoples' way. They're running THROUGHOUT the gym while taking up the entire turf space. I get it, you need to run as part of the circuit, but really.. up and down the stairs? Do a lap around the gym outside. Lastly, the amount of people on a call and videocall is utterly mind-blowing. During rush hour, the sheer sound of chatter is enough to make my ears bleed. These phone people are stopped randomly on the gym floor; seated on benches; and collide into you because, surprise, they're not watching where they're going. Drive the extra 5-10min for Paramus, or even go as far as Fort Lee because WOW this place is awful. read more

This gym is good I like how it's all the way I the back of a shopping center. There is tons of parking over 100 spaces and it's a very spacious parking lot. The gym itself is maybe a 7 from 1-10 most of these gyms have so much space inside is just the way they set up these machines everything is so close and space is tight. The lockers are clean as well as the rugs. Not a fan of the shower area only have 3 showers available and when u shower the curtains don't cover the entire wall. 2nd time here overall good gym. read more

This location compared to most I've been to is SO CLEAN, has an abundance of machines, and the staff has always been so nice and friendly when I walk through the door. I know I should join, but as somebody who doesn't drive, it's kind of hard to get to the location, and with winter upon us, and it getting dark early, It's difficult for me to walk up the steep hill. I had a guest pass, and they were just so nice. I'm bummed that I cannot get to the location so easily because the place is spotless, I loved the classes, the employees, esp at the front desk. The 5 stars has to do with value for money, staff, & facilities in general. Ive been coming here for years. I actually signed up before they even opened. I remember when I saw the advertisement ( this is about 7 years ago now) & I came to check it out, it was a huge empty warehouse. The owner showed me around & painted his vision of the gym, I quickly saw the potential so I signed up immediately. It took about 9 months until the gym opened & ive been coming ever since. Im mention this because my review is a long term review, not a quick short term experience like a restaurant meal. Value for Money: Its $20/month with no contract. There is a new owner now (about 2 months ago) and he has been making a lot of improvements & renovations to the gym. For $30 month, there is a new membership that features unlimited classes, tanning, child sitting, & nationwide access. I should note the classes are new, the new owner introduced this. See my photo for classes. Staff: The staff are mostly college students who are friendly around the gym, smile, and greet you when you come in & say by when you leave. Ive never encountered anyone rude here. Facilities: Ive mentioned some aspects of the facilities earlier. A couple of other notes is that I like how things around the gym have their own location & not scattered around. For example, there are sections located for abs, cardio, weight lifting, training. I should also mention that they have a huge theatre with treadmills that plays movies all day. They also just purchased these new bikes that have a gaming aspect to them. The screen displays a simulated bike trail with other bikes to make you feel outside & not stationary ( see photo). I just hate that this location closes at 5 over the weekends during the summer. Who is trying to save money for a mtter of 2 hours? Whoch makes you think what other corners are they cutting just to avoid paying. Also the worst part is that there is no air, this place is like a sauna on a hot day. There is mo ac that spreads over to the weights area. There is literally one giant fan that serves the entire gym and that pathetic . The were so sweet and made me feel so comfortable. They walked me thru the gym and explained everything from the machines to all classes. They were very knowledgeable. Now when I go I always see one of them in the check in and they just make me feel at home. I no longer feel uncomfortable. They have given me the confidence to better my health and life. The Hackensack Retro Fitness gym is filthy and disgusting. It's a disgrace. I go to the Tappan location. The Tappan location immaculate. Alcohol wipes in containers spread out throughout the gym, the entire gym is so clean and properly maintained. All machines work and the one time a cable broke from a machine, someone that works there fixed and repaired it within an hour. You WON'T SEE THIS AT HACKENSACK!! Hackensack's machines are worn down, some are broken, and the gym reminds me of a prison yard. Free weight plates (5 and 10 pounds) look like they got them from a junkyard and some are so damaged they have black tape wrapped around them! All the machines are almost right on top of one another, I NEVER see any one that works there cleaning the machines., and the place is DIRTY and GROSS! No A/C or ventilation. The bathroom in the men's room smells like someone urinated all over the floor! My brother got a membership at Hackensack because he lives right down the street. Needless to say, he upgraded from the basic membership 19.99 to the core membership 26.99 just so he could go to another location!! This is after 3 weeks!!!! If he would have cancelled he'd have to pay another enrollment fee so instead upgrading to the core allows you to go to any Retro. That's how much he hated the Hackensack location that he'd pay more money a month and drive 15 minutes to the Fair Lawn location just to get the hell away from that rat hole in Hackensack. The people that work at Hackensack are also rude and unprofessional. I personally heard the girl that wears black rimmed glasses working behind the front desk talking to another worker saying "that's dope as fuck". I mean who the hell talks like that?! Also, some of the people that workout at this location don't even wipe down and sanitize the machine they were using! I saw a bunch of hoodlums that go to the gym having a conversation over by the dumbbell rack. One of them was sitting on the dumbbells! Sorry but during COVID, the last thing I want to do is use the equipment you were just sitting on! He didn't even spray or wipe it down after they left. In all honesty giving this place 1 star is a crime. It should get 0 stars. Do yourself a favor and if you want to go to a Retro don't go to Hackensack. You will be sorry. Read all the other poor reviews this place has gotten! You'd think that ownership would do something to correct and fix all the problems everyone is complaining about! But no. I wouldn't go to the Hackensack location if the membership was free in all honesty. It's a complete sh*t hole! I come to this hackensack branch once in awhile because it's closest to me, to get that workout in when I'm short on time. But I rather drive the few extra miles to my favorite location and main retro elsewhere. *No issues with staff and personnel* BUT Forget about coming here to lift weights when it's busy. Almost all of the 10lbs are shit. Which ppl need to do super sets and drop sets and pyramid sets. Important for cutting and building endurance and stamina. They're beaten down, chipped, and rugged and no longer true to weight. This makes the decent weights limited. Every retro fitness at the end of the year, annually take out a maintenance fee on top of the monthly fee, from all of its members. Where is this money? Why haven't they bought new weights? There are other better locations with better or newer equipment. And best of all, have staff members that actually re rack weights that lazy ppl don't do, clean, wipe down and dust off equipment. Well there aren't many "lunck" heads but I don't always feel comfortable here. If you go in the wee hours (M-F) it's actually nice. Quiet. The signs in the woman's bathrooms are deterrents, I appreciate what management has to say but I don't agree with how it's said. Something about "respect"... I can follow the policy with out the dad guilt lecture. Kinda juvenile. The work out area is really clean. I always see something being wiped down. I wish a little more detail was placed in the women's locker room... it has a rug... doesn't feel very hygienic. Lockers could use a lil TLC. I like the movie theatre thing- very cool actually I just never know what's playing. I wish there was a sign at the check in area. Or maybe I am missing it. If you are trying to get a good workout in , this is the place. They have the machines that targets every bodypart and Plenty of different areas to workout.. ive said it before a smile and acknowledgement go a long way. I have never not gotten a hello there which is awesome. Of course each gym is different and have its pros and cons but if u dont wanna feel judged and actually feel like family this is the place. They are great at remembering names and quick service.. thank you retro... Also i see alot of people complaining about covid issues. Listen just as every other business , covid was new and no one still understands all the rules as the cdc changes it weekly. I started going to this Retro a couple of years ago in 2016 and recently cancelled my membership back in May of 2018. The beginning experience of my VIP membership was great and I even signed up for personal training. Unfortunately, after some time my trainer left Retro so I was offered to be placed with another trainer and I made the appointment through the phone, which was in 2017. That's when everything started going downhill. I went to my first session with that trainer and waited at the desk where the trainers are, no one arrived for 5 minutes so I went to the front desk to ask and they told me that no appointment had been made and that the trainer I had been placed with didn't even work that day. So I continued to my own workout plan and made another appointment at the front desk , I left semi-happy since my training session hadn't been discounted off my contract. So when the day arrived for my next training session, I waited at the usual desk, which is where they have the group training now, and nothing. Luckily I spotted the trainer I had the appointment with and she was with another customer. Weird I thought, so I checked my Retro app and confirmed that my appointment was at the correct time. I spoke to the trainer after and she showed me her system, which had a different customer's name written in my time slot. Probably a glitch I thought, so I let it pass again. I continued onto my own workout again since I like to keep to schedule and made another appointment this time through the Retro application on my phone. Time comes again for my appointment and of course when I get there, the trainer isn't there. Once again, "she's not in today," the front desk told me. When I asked them why no one decided to at least update me when I had the appointment, they completely avoided the question and asked me if I wanted to make another appointment. I told them no and that I wanted to speak to a manager for a refund and they told me that the manager was in another location. I said okay since I knew who the manager was and didn't see her there. I come back a couple days later and ask for the manager again and I was told that the gym was under the process of new management so there was no manager at all, which continued to be the story every time I called to see if the manager was in, I eventually stopped going since my trainer sessions had expired, which to me seemed intentional since it was so longer refundable after expiration. I came back to this retro in May only to cancel my membership in person and everything had changed. A very friendly lady walked up to me and asked why I was cancelling an I said it lacked management and explained my story, she said that there is a new management and that I was welcomed whenever I changed my mind. After this experience and losing over $200 for training I wouldn't recommend this Retro due to my past experience. read more

Retro of Hackensack has become one of my homes! I always feel great about walking In the door each time I go. I've been teaching Zumba classes here since they built the BRAND NEW Group X Studio. Members were eager to try all the new classes and now the classes are getting better and better! There are always fun events and giveaways going on! So far there's been a post Thanksgiving Turkey Burner, Zumba Toy Drive, Valentines Day Partner Teaching, and more to come! VIP members get so many benefits such as unlimited classes, free childcare, tanning, shakes, and guest privileges. Not only is Retro great but the members are amazing! I liked this gym while I was going, even brought my wife and her friend into membership. At the end of my contract I stopped going and closed my account because I moved. About 7 months later I found out they had been charging me since then. I disputed those charges and they sent it into collections. Called them multiple times and they did not help at all. If you're going to come here you should do month to month, cause they will try to screw you over. read more

I consider myself a very forgiving person. I understand that businesses have off days, and know its usually never businesses fault for bad experiences there. That being said, Retro Fitness in Hackensack may be one of the worst establishments I've ever been to. I recently moved to New Jersey and have been shopping around for gym memberships. Retro Fitness is closest to my house, so i figured I would try it for a month since it was very convenient for my ride home from work. I am saying this now that I will honestly never go back to retro fitness again. Retro fitness has machines in bright colors with a 'retro' asthetic. I'm more than convinced that the machines were from the same time period this place tries to emulate! They were in terrible condition and many were not functioning at all. The machines that I used (after trying to find one for about 15 minutes that wasn't broken) were downright dirty! I know people sweat and such, but having grime on them and dirt is not a nice workout environment! It's not just that they were wet with sweat, but somehow there was this muddy grime on many of the machines. Based on how much of it wiped off onto my shorts and leg, I assume it's something that can be handled with just a little bit of care for the establishment. I pointed this out to one of the workers there and they just kind of laughed it off and couldn't care less. Being a forgiving person, I went to seek the manager, Drew (although based on how dirty the place was it could have been the uniform of a person after workout!). Sometimes people have bad days and I figured maybe I'd be told they were extra swamped today and the cleaning crew comes tonight. Instead, the manager was no better, and , he rudely told me that if I didn't like it, I can go workout somewhere else! The nerve of him! Out of all the gyms I've been to, (I travel a lot for work so I've been to my fair share), I have never seen something as vile and worthless as Retro Fitness. In the end, I spent about 45 minutes in Retro Fitness, and got about 5 minutes of workout done. I think the most calories I burned came from feeling stressed about how rude the manager was! I have never seen such a rude staff. The best part about retro fitness is that it makes you feel good about all the other gyms you have been to. If this is the standard for fitness centers in the area, I think I would rather work out at home. 1/10 would NEVER recommend to anyone. Also, the fact that Retro Fitness manipulates the Yelp review by having their employees post here (the lady that runs zumba ave a 5* review) is just appalling. read more

The staff seems nice but damn... how do you keep a straight face with a place looking like this? The machines and weights are worn, the machines are extremely crowded together. If you go upstairs, it's even hotter since heat rises and they have no air in that place. The eliptical machines are bunched together with no space to walk behind them. There is space but you have to be careful not to get hurt walking behind them since they're so close to the wall. When you get off the machine you have no where to go but behind them. I'll continue to go and take the trip to Rockaway on weekends where you feel the AC and the gym is kept clean. Also the machines are not nearly as crowded together and as dated. Locker room smells like someone died in there.... I honestly thought of buying some air freshener for that place but it would only temporarily mask the problem that they have there. I'm not the one to complain but this place is something else. Where's management??? And if you decide to respond to me, remember, actions speak louder than words!! Lots of equipment. However, the squat rack seems to be off and some of the floor is dented which can affect deadlifts or any passerby just walking by. Some of the front desk staff are kinda rude and uncaring. But there are the few who are sweet and attentive. Overly sweet but good smoothies! Use the yelp discount if you can. You might get some hesitant employees telling you they need to verify first but overall, it's a cool gym that has what you need. read more
