I am originally from the Totowa studio, but I feel like that location has been slowly declining throughout the years. The Hackensack location, however, just gets better and better! The coaches have such lively energy and they care for all of their members. I remember I thought about cancelling my membership, but then I started going to this studio. In my first few classes, some of the coaches approached me and asked for my name because they didn't want to mispronounce it. That made me feel at home and keeps bringing me back everyday! read more

**This review is specifically for my experience with trying their Intro Class for first-timers. Warning: This is going to be a long one.** I'm an active person and I'm always looking for new ways to spice up my fitness routines. I've heard so much hype about Orange Theory over the past few years. I had to kill my curiosity and give it a try myself. SIGNING UP: The Hackensack location offers an intro class at $12 for first-timers. It's only free for specific locations. I signed up on the website and chose a 12pm class on a Friday. Keep in mind that they would like you to arrive around 30 minutes prior to the start time just so they can give you a mini "orientation". On the day of my class, I was greeted by one of the front desk employees, Jackie. She was enthusiastic, informative, and overall a pleasure to speak with. She explained what I would expect out of the class, gave me a tour of the studio, and went over my medical history/consent forms. WHAT IS ORANGE THEORY?: To sum OT up in a nutshell, it's basically a fitness studio that offers one hour group fitness classes, specifically two types: a HIIT-based one and a strength training one. I've only tried the HIIT one, so I can't speak on the other. Each class is led by a coach who instructs and guides you on the workout for the full hour. We rotate between three stations: treadmills, rower machines, and free weights/body weight exercises (planks, bicep curls, squats, lunges, etc.). The workouts change daily so there's always a new challenge. Everyone wears a heart monitor that the studio provides so we can track our heart rate. The monitors are synced up with each machine and on a giant screen so we can actually see how fast or slow we're going as well as everyone else's. There are different "zones" of heart rates, with each one representing the percentage of your maximum HR. For most of the workout, you want to try to stay in the ORANGE zone, which is 84-91% of your max HR. MY EXPERIENCE: Jeff was my coach. To put it simply, he was awesome. He had great energy, gave enough personal attention to everyone in class, and was encouraging the whole time. He also had a fire playlist, so that helped a lot haha. The other members were very friendly and welcoming. No judgment here- everyone came from varying level of fitness backgrounds, all shapes and sizes, and all ages. They have a strong sense of community, which is always nice in a fitness environment. I really enjoyed the class and I'm actually surprised at how much fun I was having. I'm not really into HIIT or cardio classes so this was a nice change from my usual weight lifting. I liked how I was able to see my heart rate and how hard I was working. After the class, Jackie followed up with me about how I felt and how I did. You're able to see your "stats" after every workout, like when and how fast your heart rate was changing and calories burned. She explained to me the different membership options and she wasn't pushy at all. Their memberships come in either a package of 4, 8, or unlimited classes each month. FINAL THOUGHTS: Although I had a positive experience, I decided not to sign up. Why? It doesn't exactly fit into my current fitness routine/goals. I'm a dancer and I also lift weights 4-5 times a week. I don't see myself taking their classes that often. At most, I might take a class twice a month, or maybe 3. I think their classes are motivating and challenging, but aren't my cup of tea. I prefer a gym floor with dumbbells, barbells, squat racks, benches, and machines... they don't have that here. Orange Theory is great for getting your cardio in and building your endurance, but I don't recommend it for those who really want to build more muscle, gain strength, and hit higher PRs. Last but not least, I think the prices are a little outrageous. $89/month for 4 classes, $189/month for unlimited, AND $100 for the heart rate monitor is not really worth it to me... Regardless of your fitness goals and experience, I still think taking an intro class is worth a try. If you like it and don't want to sign up for a membership, it's $28 for a drop-in rate + $10 for the heart rate monitor rental. read more

I've been working out my whole life and I was on this rut where I wanted to try different workouts so I tried OT. I love it. One hour of sweat and challenging myself - any of the workouts I do. The instructors are very knowledgeable and motivating. I love watching my splats and using the wristband to stay in the orange. I highly recommend trying as I have many friends that did not work out and they are now members. read more

I joined OTF at the Totowa location because it is on my way home from work, so I go there during the week, and here at Hackensack on weekends. I honestly think that this is the best fitness studio for a few reasons: 1) It has ALL types of people (young, old, men, women, fit/buff, out of shape, etc). 2) Each workout routine is different for every single class you take (yes, each class is literally different so your body is 'tricked' and not doing the same routine over and over) 3) Coaches actually care. Some more than others, but a special shout out to particularly good ones: Demetrius (telling me to "run for my life" on the treadmill), Jeff (squatting in front of my rower yelling at me to row faster) Cyril (telling me that he isn't shortchanging us, so we can't shortchange him baby! - AKA give it 100%) *This location DOES have custom-lock lockers with combinations, and has 2 showers (each is a 1-person individual room) and 2 bathrooms. I first struggled to get through class, and now I look forward to coming to class. I never thought that was possible. I feel incredible when I leave, knowing I maximized my hour and got everything I could out of a workout. The front desk girls are super helpful but I will say the only downfall is that I have to call them to put me on a waitlist at any other studio that is not my 'home' studio. But it isn't their fault, its just a glitch on the APP. All your workouts appear on an APP on your phone. You can set goals, you can view your performance, etc. It is quite nice to scroll through and say "wow I really went to 10 classes this month" etc. It is well worth the money. I feel like I get a unique and custom workout every time I go. I highly recommend it. And remember, the best part is- YOU ARE COMPETING WITH YOURSELF. It is not a "leader" board, it is just a board to tell you how YOU are doing. (Are you in the 'orange' zone? Is your heart-rate climbing? If not, push yourself harder). :) read more

The studio and instructors here are great but I had an issue with my membership. I had a doctors note and they acknowledged it and still told me that I can't freeze my membership and made me roll over classes. Then when I tried to cancel my membership, they told me I still have to pay even if I have a medical reason for not being able to come in. So now I have two months worth of classes that will be wasted. When I asked again about why I couldn't freeze my membership before, they basically claimed that that's what I wanted. I told them I never said that but they don't care. I do not recommend this location. read more

This isn't my usual studio but I came in here during the holidays as it was the closest to where my family lives. Now, granted, Bergen County is very densely (over)populated so this was to be expected, but I was honestly so surprised at how packed this location is. There is barely any space to move around the lockers because it's always so packed with people. Though I was welcomed very warmly at this location, I did feel that the class size was too large which really overwhelmed me. Maybe I'm just spoiled because my home studio is so small but I'd never been to a 3G class before and I'm not sure that I would want to do that very often. Either way it gets the job done and you manage to get your workout in either way, just keep in mind it might be very overwhelming if you're used to a small, more intimate studio. The location is also not the greatest as it's a super busy strip mall and it took such a long time to get out of there after class. read more

I've been a member here since March 2018, and I have to say that this gym has changed my life for the better. I have always been "into fitness" and liked working out. However, Orangetheory Fitness Hackensack makes me truly love exercising and has me looking forward to the next work out. The formula that the Orangetheory franchise provides, along with the friendly environment of this studio, and the motivation provided by the coaches here is what sets this gym apart from any other gym. Extra shout out to Demetrius and Jeff (just to name a couple of the amazing coaches) for always playing the fire music and for always pushing everyone to accomplish and exceed their goals. There have been many classes and workouts where I have wanted to give up, and many days where I wanted to stick to the bare minimum. But these coaches always encourage you to challenge yourself - run or row faster and to lift heavier weights. The studio managers Adi and Eileen, and the front desk attendants, Marella, Bri, Mariely, and Andy are always so accommodating and helpful and keep the operations running smoothly. The social atmosphere of this studio is truly unique. I joined this gym expecting to stay fit and healthy, like one expects at any other gym. Though I never expected to have made so many friends (and a boyfriend) here. The staff and the members are all so welcoming and supportive. There are also team challenges, social outings like monthly happy hours, and other events that my friends and I always look forward to attending. Literally, some of my friends will change their work schedules around just to be able to attend the events that this studio hosts. So if you're new to the area looking to meet new people, or new to working out or are seeking new physical challenges, Orangetheory Fitness Hackensack is the perfect gym to join! read more

I've been a member at many gyms however nothing compares to Hackensack OTF. I've been a member for 2 years now and not only do I love the classes and the theory lets discuss the staff!! Hands down the best from the front desk, management and trainers. The trainers are exceptional, motivating, encouraging and personable. It's also great to see a staff member regardless of their position join the class and work a sweat right along with you, it's not only about the job for the staff at OTF which speaks in volumes. The workout here was great. I'm a premier member and my home studio is in North Carolina, but I was in town for a few days so stopped by here. The workout was really great as usual, but I did have a lot of difficulty getting in touch with someone on the phone. I wanted to bring my sister, who would have been a first-timer, so I called to get her in. I must have called maybe 4 times and left a VM over the span of a few hours. After not hearing back, both my sister and I showed up anyway and they said the class was full. I was a bit annoyed that we had driven all that way for no reason. The workout was great, but the service could have been better. At my home studio, your calls get returned within 30 minutes. So I was disappointed that etiquette doesn't apply here. read more

I came to this studio because two of my girlfriends rant and rave (as well as multiple coworkers) about this place and the instructors. I used to workout a lot and be very into fitness and martial arts, but I took sometime off to go back to school and focus on my career as a healthcare professional and fell off the wagon so I've been looking for something to get me going again. I came and did a trial class with Demetrius and he was the BOMB! Super motivating, very clear with instructions and made it really comfortable to wanna work out and be there and not feel slow or behind. I gave this place two stars for the rude receptionist Adi. She came to see me after class and right away was asking if I was going to sign up. When I told her I needed to think about it she got very annoyed and was like "well why not?" In the most passive aggressive tone that I can't even demonstrate in writing if I tried. I said well I kinda live close to Totowa as well and wanted to check out that studio, and she goes "Well then you should've just done your trial class at Totowa ! What's your credit card? It's on file right? It's gonna be $12 for today." Wow, talk about nasty. I said yes and my two friends look in shock and I was completely and totally embarrassed. She didn't even look at me anymore, went behind the register, didn't say bye or thanks and acted like I was shit on the ground. I deal with patients and work with other doctors and healthcare providers and customer service is #1. I never ruled Hackensack out or said no definitely, but after that I'd drive anywhere before going back there. If you're not ready to commit don't go there or face the rath of the receptionists. After many years of resistance to joining a gym, I finally caved and signed up with my wife. Everyone from the front desk employees to the trainers have been nothing but helpful and friendly. Starting off with little experience around the gym, they do not make you feel intimidated at all. At the end of the day you are only focused on competing against yourself. During covid, they have taken a lot of precautions to ensure our safety. Typically the classes are reduced in half in order to adhere to social distancing standards. So far, it's been the best decision I've made and I look forward getting back into shape! read more

I've been a member of OTF for about 2 years now and I still love being part of this gym! They keep it very clean inside and the sanitizing is always on point. I feel safe working out with my mask and using the wipes after every station. It is a bit of a challenge to workout with a mask but if you want it, just get it done! The coaches play dope music and are always motivating. They correct your form and remind you how to row properly all the time. They make you feel part of a fam outside your own bc they do happy hours, special events for workouts and there is always some kind of prize and competition that keeps you motivated. I invest in the price I pay for my mental and physical health. As a mom of 4, it isn't always easy to just workout at home. YOU time is so important and I feel I get that when I workout at OTF. read more

I signed up for a 2pm on class the night before (paid, because this location does not participate in the first class free program) and was woken up at 730 am with a call from the front desk telling me I cannot come at this time because they do not allow first timers at this time slot. No alternative was given as everything was already booked; very disappointing for having rearranged my day for this. It should be clear when booking that if it is your first time, call and get available classes. read more

I've attended this gym for long enough to judge it. Workouts are usually great and about 2 out of the 5 coaches are worth what you pay. I believe that for the amount of money a member pays to attend, they are not treated with respect by the receptionists and even a few of the coaches. Sometimes it seems like they forget their running a business. This studio also charges a $12 fee if you cancel your class less than 8 hours before a class (even if you are sick.. and explain your sick). In addition, I faced unexpected traffic and arrived to a 7 am class 5 minutes and 16 seconds late and was told I had to leave and was charged $12 (I woke up hours early to attend this class and it had SEVERAL opened spots available). The receptionist wasn't apologetic at all just told me I'd have to leave. I've attended different private gyms like this one, but was always accommodated and appreciated by the employees. This spot is really crowded and the instructor was so unprofessional- Brandon was the one I tried at this location- I accidentally didn't put the seat pushed back on the rower and he kept announcing in the class that people need to respect the equipment and don't be lazy leaving it where it was. I didn't intentionally do it and for making me feel bad the whole entire class is uncalled for. I thought it should be brought to the owner's attention! Other locations are great!! Just had an awful experience with this one. Someone should coach him- he has Napoleon Complex. read more

This is a great full body workout. I was intimidated at first but everyone goes at their own pace and the coaches are very encouraging. You can't put a price tag on your health and this works for me. I was not a runner/jogger and surprised myself after my first 3 weeks when I was going all out speed as if I was born running. I would definitely recommend OTF. read more

I have a home membership to the Philadelphia gym and I love my home gym. I travel quite a bit for work and as a result I've visited many gyms (this is one of the aspects which I love about orangetheory). I recently went to the Hackensack gym -- this has been the fifth gym that I've visited in the past 2 months due to my travel. I've always had a great experience except at this gym. I arrived early because I know that I would need to fill out a new intake form. There were two ladies working and one of them had her back to all the commotion going on while the other one was taking pictures. I waited 15 minutes before finally being able to grab one of the ladies' attention and telling her that this was my first time and if I had to fill anything out. She gave me a pad with the form, asked for my credit card and walked Away. Class was about to start so I filled out the form, checked the sign in sheet and didn't see my name so filled out my name in the guest registration. Many of the gyms I've been to didn't have my name on their sign in sheet the first time so I didn't think much of it. Now they've charged me a no show fee and I called to have that removed and the lady working was giving me a hard time and saying that I didn't sign in and it's corporate policy. Although I told her that 1. I checked the sign in sheet and my name wasn't there 2. I've been to many gyms that welcome me on my first visit and don't have my name on the sign in sheet so this wasn't a new thing 3. I completed the intake form on that day which they should have 4. I received my report on how I did in the class. I love Orangetheory and so far have had a great experience everywhere else. Do yourself the favor and find one of the many good gyms out there as opposed to that one. Me and the gym were not on good terms when I first started. I would dread going to the gym- I'd get on a treadmill for an hour, get off and feel unfulfilled. OTF is what I needed! It is not your traditional gym! Each class is led by a coach - you will have someone pushing you to work hard! But when you are finished with class and leave drenched with sweat - I leave feeling like I had the best workout. In each class you will get a full body workout as you will alternate between a treadmill, rowing machine, and weight section. Each class is also very different from the previous class - the class will either focus on endurance, power, etc. I love OTF Hackensack!! Coaches are great, I get an amazing workout and it feels like a community. I have now been a member for 3 months and I can see the change! I no longer have to force myself to go to the gym. It's such a well rounded workout, gives you the right amount of power, strength, endurance, and cardio. I always feel accomplished afterwards, and the results I've seen keep me coming back for more. The coaches are absolutely amazing at my home gym in Hackensack NJ, they really make the whole experience so much more motivating. I've gone to several gyms and tried different programs, but I have never been so successful and consistent as I have here. Don't get me wrong, it's always a tough workout, I've been a member for 7 months as of now and it doesn't get easier, you just get BETTER. There's nothing like an OTF workout. read more

Today I had something very important that came up just an hour before I was scheduled to go. I called the studio and they were very nice and understanding and was able to cancel and not be used against me. read more

I love going to OTF Hackensack!! I was really hesitant to start working out again due to COVID-19,however being back at OTF Hackensack, I feel safe. They take a lot of precautions from taking your temperature to cleaning thoroughly in between classes and all classes are fairly spread out. The Orangetheory workout is like having your own personal trainer without the enormous fees. I'm the type of person who needs a push in order to get in a good workout, and I like the fact that the classes are always different which keeps things interesting. The staff at the Hackensack location are incredible, the trainers are awesome. My only complaint is that I only signed up for 2 workouts a week. OTF of Hackensack is nothing short of amazing. As someone who previously hated traditional gyms, I look forward to every class here. The coaches keep you motivated throughout the entire workout. In the wake of COVID they've made class sizes smaller, increased sanitizing and require everyone to wear a mask. We always sanitize between stations and it makes me feel more comfortable knowing that they take extra time between classes to sanitize as well. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave you'll feel welcomed from all of the staff here. Just came from my first class! The staff is super nice. I haven't worked out in just about a year, minus 2 Pilates classes I took this past week, so I am not in shape, but I completed the workout (minus one push cheat where I just had to lower my speed!). I fear I will be sore tomorrow but I feel great. Orangetheory combines all the things I like- a group class, but feels like personal training- you're not aimlessly using a machine. They have a great schedule- early morning through to the evening so there is no excuse not to go, you can find the time! I didn't see the bathroom, but the rest of the place looks pretty clean. Also, despite everyone being real sweaty and there being a class just before mine, it didn't have that gym smell if you know what I mean. Now if only they can make it so I lose 5lbs per class lol! read more
