I have been a member at Equinox Paramus for a long time, but I have finally decided to leave the gym. At $250 a month for a single club access membership, it is simply not worth it anymore. The main issue is the deterioration of benefits without any change in the premium price point. Ever since Equinox decided to leave the partnership with Kiehl's and focus its expansion on the California network, the benefits of the gym have not improved; in fact, they've noticeably deteriorated. While the facility is still attractive, the value proposition has plummeted. I finally made the switch and decided to seek better value elsewhere. The high price no longer justifies the reduced perks and benefits offered at this location. read more

Overall a decent gym. Its luxurious and very spacious. I would prefer more free weights and less cardio/studio space but that's my preference. Personally, I don't care much for eucalyptus towels and I don't care much for the showers as I prefer to shower at home. They have 3 racks and tons of treadmills/ellipticals, etc. They have the basics to do a decent workout but they need some extra cable attachments and some additional benches imo. The overall layout of the gym didn't make much sense to me either. The racks are upstairs and the leg extension and hamstring curl machines are downstairs. I think the overall placement of the equipment can use some work. read more

Absolutely cannot recommend Scott Dommenge at Equinox Paramus enough. Scott is hands down one of the most knowledgeable and well-rounded trainers I've ever worked with. For a upscale gym that claims the following on their website "This proprietary operating system, built to advance full health optimization, decodes and unlocks the peak of your potential, redefining High-Performance Living on a whole new scale" my experience has been dismal. My personal trainer after a year of training with her decided to drop me and did not help transition to another trainer. Texted me to drop me too . The local General Manager refuses to return calls. For a high end gym that claims your health is important to them, there is a level of incompetence in leadership and ZERO client focus. Somewhat sad. On the positive side, the facility is really nice. The facilities was extremely clean and well kept with equipment properly racked and I loved the locker room (especially the Kiehl's products). Staff were very welcoming and willing to help. Another excellent Yelp Fit Club Event in the books! I was super excited to get into this event since I've never been to Equinox in Paramus. This gym is absolutely beautiful, spacious (2 floors) and clean. Upon walking in, there were snacks (mint chip protein bar, almond cacao protein bar, apple slices with almond butter) and beverages (rose, aloe and cinnamon water) from Juice Press and some Yelp swag. I came here straight from work so I had to go to the locker room first and I'm so glad they have lockers with locks already on them, it makes everything super convenient! After I got ready, we all headed upstairs where the Firestarter HIIT class was being held. The workout was only 30 minutes but don't let the time fool you, it was a very intense workout! I was dying only a few minutes in. Our instructor was very energetic and she played some really great upbeat music, definitely felt like I was in a club - minus the dancing (but getting my butt kicked). After class we got nice, fresh, minty wet and cold towels to cool off. What a nice treat, it felt amazing. I went back downstairs and got a massage from Equinox spa and the massage therapist did a great job and gave me some really good tips on what I could do to help my trouble areas. I thought that this location would be nicer compared to some bigger cities but I was so wrong.. first off, the staff are so nasty and rude. The managers are so predatory and try to sell you on a membership or package every 5 minutes. The facilities are OK in terms of maintenance but it's a lot smaller than I expected. If you take a class, they can get SO crowded and it's so poorly kept - people are right next to each other and no one respects your space, weights are all over the place, although the instructors have always been nice. Overall, I would say save your money on this ridiculous overpriced gym and either pay for classes at another fitness studio or if you don't need that just join a regular gym that is more reasonably priced. Totally an overkill and way overpriced, not worth it at all IMO especially at this location. Some of the ones I've been to in NYC have been way better. read more

They overcharged me and I cannot get my money back. That's one. I don't know if it is coincidence or not, but ever since Mr. Ross decided to fund a political campaign (not making this political) Paramus leadership went down. The Paramus equinox is like a growth stock without sustainable cash flow. Looks great, to later find out that it is the Enron of the gym game. The trainers are super friendly. Shawn is AWESOME !! And so are the rest of the crew. It is not their fault. Also, say thank you to the hygiene crew. Because they work hard, but when I was there, understaffed. Yeah, just didn't find the value in investing my money in this place anymore. I REPEAT: the trainers, cleaning staff, and greeting personal are NOT AT FAULT. She assigned me to Nick, one the PTs and he's extremely nice and is ver knowledgeable in terms of what your goals are. The facility is nice and tidy, and is never crowded. Overall, gym is ok. Bathrooms are impeccable and clean workout areas. But, is missing workout equipment for torso, abs and back. Some machines out of service... not impressed. But hopefully they improve this location. I love most of the equinox in NYC locations. read more

Wow--so much fun packed into 30 minutes! I love cardio workouts, but this year I have been swamped at work. My typically easy 5-8 mile runs are now nonexistent. When time is limited and motivation is lacking, I need that accountability. And this HIIT workout definitely did the trick. 1. It kicked my butt and 2. It reminded of how much fun and rewarding cardio can be if you push yourself. Our instructor was lively, energetic, and extremely motivating. Despite being out of breath, I didn't want to disappoint her. I loved that none of the sets lasted for more than 45 seconds. I like to be able to see the finish line, and these short intervals kept me in the zone. I also liked the variety. I can do lunges and squats all day, but boy did those broncos kill me. One day I'll make those look more impressive, I promise. Everyone at the facility was welcoming and helpful. The five minute massage was icing on the cake. My back was particularly sore, so it helped to loosen me right up. If you're looking for a gym that is clean, not crowded, and high intensity, Equinox in Paramus is a great choice. Facilities - 5/5. The place is really spacious, and there is a ton of equipment. It usually isn't really packed (seeing how it's in Jersey), so you never really have to wait for anything. Everything is very clean and modern. However, it doesn't have a pool or basketball court (for those who are interested). The only reason why I didn't give it a 5/5 is because of the lack of class offerings. However, I do get that the demand isn't as high in Jersey, but it would be nice to take a solid class when I'm in the area. I guess I'm just spoiled from being in the city :) Also, the gym is a bit difficult to find. I find myself missing the entrance a few times...and then being late to a class. Whomp. read more

Big thanks to Sara and the Paramus Equinox team! This was my 1st event in NJ and I was wiped out from the intense HIIT workout after a whole day of work. I definitely was glad that the class was only 30min and no more. Our instructor was super energetic and kept motivating us all to jump and lunge to the end. Loved loved loved the damp, minty towels that were handed out afterwards. So cool and refreshing! The gym is so luxurious. As we signed in with Sara, we were specially treated with protein bars, apple slices, Juice Press beverages (cinnamon, ginger, aloe, or rose water), and Yelp swag. It's 2-stories high with the HIIT class and cycling area upstairs. The locker room was spacious and chic. It's well equipped with hair dryers, hair spray, khiel lotion, cotton balls, and q-tips to help you get ready for whatever after a post-workout shower. Super fun way to start my 2017 year off in the right direction. Gotta keep getting stronger! read more

I've been an Equinox member at this location since they've pretty much opened the doors. (I've also been a member at the Wall St location years ago.) My experience here has been a very positive one since what's offered is nothing less than stellar! Where do I begin? Well, for starters, I'm a devout yogi with young children. Equinox is the only quality studio that offers excellent childcare for up to 2hrs a day. The caregivers take a genuine interest in the kids and do all sorts of arts and crafts with them. They create imaginative games for play and most importantly, it's CLEAN! The ratio of kids to caregivers are pretty good as well. You're given a vibrating device that alerts you to pick your child up for whatever reason so it's good to know they're well taken care of whilst you're doing your thing. The yoga studio is clean and spacious with complimentary yoga mats that they offer to clean and pack away after you're done using them... Part of the Equinox experience :) Chilled eucalyptus towels, steam room, great change rooms, shower facilities, Kiehls products and a beautiful spa for when you need it. The staff are super professional and friendly. The instructors are TOP NOTCH. The cafe has delish smoothies and little bites to eat. The clothing store offers the most well resourced work-out wear. I've been at this gym at all hours and there's definitely peak times and other times when it's quieter. When it's busy, there's a great energy and when it's not, I schedule my myofascial therapy sessions with my amazing trainer for some R&R. If you're on the fence, don't be. I joined this gym in April and I am pretty happy so far. Yes, it's relatively expensive, but it's worth it - if you like the vibe. It's very intimate but it does have more space than other Equinox I've visited. The trainers can be very annoying and infringe somewhat on your space if you work out on your own. The weights area layout can use some work, but overall I really like the atmosphere. As far as group exercise, I recommend taking some of the Ozzy's bootcamp or conditioning classes if you are looking for a serious workout. One complaint: the juice bar can definitely be more efficient. It usually takes too long and it seems to be closed most of the time. read more

Was a member for over a year and have been to other Equinox gyms in NYC and LA and this one is really mediocre in comparison to the other Equinox gyms. It's small and the floor space is often crowded enough with their trainers. You always feel like your intruding upon their space with their clients. There are a few friendly trainers/ staff members but the rest are really god awful. So rude and pretentious... you don't feel welcomed and you actually feel judged. If you use this gym has a home gym and then have the higher packages to go to the others in the city it's worth it but if you're a local your money would be better spent at Lifetime. It costs the same and you get so so much more. The showers always smelled funny as well like sewage. Also, there was hardly any other clientele under 30- this could be a plus for a older crowd but for me it was a con. The positives are the precision running class, the eucalyptus towels, and it's a motivating environment to work out in. I just didn't think one class and towels was worth the price tag. read more

This was my first time visiting equinox gym in Paramus and I was really impressed! The facility was beautiful and a lot more modern then the other gyms in the area. One of my favorite things about this space was (surprisingly) the bathroom/locker room. This was not your typical gym locker space as it had luxurious shower stalls, clean bathroom stalls and dry counters, a steam room, and an assortment of products available to whoever needed them (q-tips, cotton balls, shampoo, conditioner, hair spray, blowdryers, etc.) The HITT workout with my fellow Yelpers was awesome! The instructor realized that we were all different fitness levels, but give us all an amazing workout. I'm still sore two days later!! Great event!! read more

Quick recap of my issue. My personal trainer moved while I had 4 sessions left in my package. She told me to contact Equinox about getting a refund for my remaining sessions. I did that and instead one of the trainers e-mailed me telling me it was not possible and stuck me with a random trainer. The General Manager, Melissa Silva was quick and very helpful in settling my problem. She gave me a full refund and even offered me additional sessions for free. I kindly declined but still goes to show that she really wanted to fix the inconvenience. Again, this is a gorgeous gym that is clean, never jam-packed and has great customer service (except for my issue with one of the trainers). Glad to see that Equinox values their members. If you have any problems with the facility contact Melissa other than a lower level staff employee as she truly cares about her job. read more

Awesome gym. Very clean and they hve everything you need. The front desk people are awesome and always friendly as is the woman who works in the apparel store. The saleswoman was also extremely helpful. This would have been a 4 or 5 star if it weren't for the "floor trainers". They seem to be perpetually working out and they hangout in "clicks". Usually 1 guy who just stares you down awkwardly all day and 2 or 3 female trainers that just follow him around the gym all day everyday. It's very awkward like a high school courtyard. If they put half the effort they put into hanging out with each other Into getting to know their clientele and their needs it would be amazing! read more

Gym is terrible, I do NOT recommend! There are many reasons not to join and here are the main ones: Dirty men's locker room that has been out of toilet paper on three occasions the last month. The locker room is consistently messy with towels strewn all over the place. No one empties the dirty towels from that bin so it overflows onto the floor. Gym was open limited hours on Friday (Christmas Eve) and closed the day after Christmas. How can the be closed the day after Christmas! Their hours are not that great to begin with. I was yelled at one night by the locker room attendant because he told me the showers are close 15 minutes before the gym closes. I told him I do not see signs stating this rule. He could not answer that question. Unfriendly staff. I have been going there for eight months now and the manager has never once said hello to me. Wow! What a beautiful gym and amazing staff! From the moment we entered, we were really welcomed and treated well. With food, drinks and massages offered in the foyer, to the meticulously clean locker rooms, Equinox is a classy, upscale experience. Being one of the few participants who grew up in the step class Era, it was quite interesting to see the trend return. This class was an intense, kick your butt class. We had a high energy instructor who encouraged us to push our inner limits. The 30 minutes went both quickly, but slowly...the 15 to 45 second intervals pushed us to our limits. The luxurious cold towel with eucalyptus was such a pleasant experience after a tough work out!!! Equinox members will enjoy testing their limits with this new class. read more

I started the gym in August and couldn't even do a push up it was really embarrassing. When I started I was given a complimentary training session and I got set up with a trainer named Doug. Immediately I was hooked and ready to get on track to get healthy. I worked with Doug and now after completing a jump rope class, for the first time, the sets consist of half jump rope and half push. Only days prior to this Doug put push ups and I was actually, Finally able to do some!!!! So when the jump rope instructor told me to do them I was worried but I pushed through and was able to complete some of the push-ups and I felt great!!! I'm still continuing my training with Doug and I can't wait to see what he has in store for me next!!!!!! read more

The place is never crowded, and the equipment is never broken. I no longer have to walk to a different zipcode or hunt for parking like it's the Garden State plaza like many other gyms. This was a cool Equinox location. However I was surprised with how "small" it seems. The layout itself is very long which I know is how some other Equinox locations are laid out. I just feel like from its inception they should have expanded outward. Cool equipment, clean locker room with lots of products. Took a bootcamp style class which was good and fast paced but allowing for modifications at various levels. Love the eucalyptus cold towels, that was amazing. I belong to the Hackensack UMC Fitness & Wellness gym and I honestly prefer that to Equinox though. read more

I had a horrific experience with this gym and I honestly wish I had read Jalisa's review beforehand because there were so many overlaps. I was on the fence about equinox. I typically pay $150/month for my gym memberships but this place didn't seem worth the money. I told the sales associate that I was skeptical of signing a year long contract from the beginning. When it was just me and her in the office she sold me dreams, making me think that I could sign up for a shorter month-long period before fully committing. I went in to do an in-body scan one day and while I signed in at the front desk they slipped in a year long contract. I never received a copy of the contract nor was I aware that I was committing for an entire year. Previously, the associate told me to come in and try it out for a month "you have nothing to lose," were her EXACT words. A year long contract for a $170/month gym that you can only leave if you move, become disabled, or die, is something to lose in my opinion. Anyways... I sent a text to the associate after my the first in body scan meeting and I explained that I would no longer be going back to the gym. I decided to text and not go in person because I knew they would try to convince me to stay. In response she proposed I freeze my membership. Why would I freeze a membership to a gym that I decided not to go back to after day 1?? When she realized I was not budging, she asked to talk on the phone. The phone call vibes where off, I could clearly tell her manager or someone else was in the room with her because she began denying everything we talked about in her office, saying she never would have told me that I was only signing up for a month. I decided to record the conversation because I was tired of being gaslit. At one point she slipped up and used the same misleading language that she used with me privately "I told you you just get the one month free and then its the one year agreement." She said "AND THEN,"-- so why was she now acting like my expectations were completely unfounded??? Her tone was condescending and I grew frustrated because it was her word against mine at that point. I continued to assert that I was not interested in staying at the gym and every assertion was essentially met with "well that's too bad." Mind you, I hadn't even used the gym at this point, I went in to do an assessment and then I never went back, so I was confused as to why I was having so much trouble leaving. I decided to go into the office and speak directly to the manager. She asked me why I didn't want to stay and I told her that, especially after this experience, there was absolutely no way I would feel comfortable at this gym. After some arduous back and forth I was thankfully able to fight my way out of this nightmare. A gym membership is a big commitment both financially and socially. I was looking for a place that I felt comfortable in and motivated to go back to. I personally would not recommend this place based on my customer service experience, but I guess if you go in and plan to use the gym without interacting with staff, then this might be the place for you! read more

I've been an Equinox member since 2012, when I was working at Columbus Circle and joined there. I was pretty excited that they opened a location in Paramus, since I live nearby. I concur with a lot of the negatives that have been listed. It's really expensive, in a dreadful location, and there is no pool. The steam room in the ladies' locker room is often out of commission, and there seem to be a number of plumbing issues. Hot water outages are not uncommon. It's clean as a whistle, but the spin room does not darken completely and is always way too warm. If you ask to have the fan put on, you'll get glared at from the anorexic wearing fleece in the corner. The class schedule is limited for early mornings and evenings. If you need a class after 7PM, you are out of luck. The yoga studio was built facing due south with huge windows. Even when it's not a hot yoga class, it's a hot yoga class. There's plenty of good equipment in excellent repair but you'll get dogged to buy expensive personal training sessions. I do mine at a private studio for a third of the price. They would do well to expand their early morning and "late" evening offerings, particularly on weekends. There's been a ton of turnover with the instructors, and not for the better, in my opinion. All in all, they seem to want to rely on the yummy mummy crowd, but the place is often nearly empty. read more

Equinox is beautiful and not overcrowded like some other gyms. The firestarter class kicked my butt - BUT I loved it. For a short 30 minute workout, you break a sweat. I loved the combinations. There was even some breakdancing! The instructor was motivating but not too intense - she encouraged us to drink water and kept us moving. What a gorgeous facility! This was a great and different Yelp Elite event, it was fun sweating my butt off with fellow Elite-ers. The HIIT workout was intense! It was only 30 minutes, but it was a tough short workout. It is a great bang for your buck. I am sore today even writing this review. I am still waiting for Equinox to fix a problem they don't want to admit to. Please do not sign up to this gym, the sales associates are liars and will sell you a dream. It is just like any other gym in the area, just with nice floors. Equipment is sparse and the trainers are all newbies. Unless you like to be surrounded around bad energy and fake smiles, I wouldn't recommend this gym to ANYONE. I am STILL waiting for a response from them in regards to the "membership" I was sold. The sales woman lied and got FIRED and they do not care. This woman forged my signature and signed me up to a membership when I just wanted to purchase a guest pass. Now due to her forging my signature I am now locked in an unwanted contract that I DID NOT agree too. Unfortunately, the managers at the Paramus location weren't able to do anything. Thanks to Brett and John, they had no empathy towards my situation. I wouldn't suggest this facility to anyone. Very, VERY poor customer service. You know the Equinox feeling of exclusively? Where you go into the club and it has just the right amount of people?! Well, this one doesn't really have that going on. It is empty! In fact, I was about to turn around thinking I missed it before I arrived. The location and even the front entrance are odd. Parking is no problem at all as the surrounding area is ghost city. The equipment and finishes are pretty much similar to all the clubs in the city only this one has a bit more space. And since this is a brand new club, you'd think a pool would have been included in the plan. I was looking for it but was sorely disappointed when I was told they didn't have one. Eh! A good club with a bad location right off 17 (there's a Popeye's next door, ew). I guess they have a plan for the area?! Because I don't see why they opened up at this location just yet. read more

I've trained at almost all the Equinox's in NYC, Chicago and L.A. so I write this review from a long term experience with the company and it's many locations. First the positive: This location has very nice high ceilings, steam room, shower and equipment as most Equinox facilities do. The place is always being cleaned. Parking is easy. Staff is very friendly. They have ample equipment including TRX, Kettlebells, spin room, classes, instability balls, etc. The negative: What genius picked the back of a strip mall to open this location in? No pool in this massive area. No food. Mid week at prime time the place is DEAD. The classes are less than half full and the place is almost a ghost town=No Energy at all. There are almost as many employees standing around as members. I feel bad for them because clearly they would like to do more. Since Equinox doesn't advertise they have no foot traffic and in a strip mall location that's death. The cherry on this Sunday is the monthly dues that just went up to $140 per month plus their ridiculous "initiation". The PT costs have become insane. They have nothing better to offer than The Gym up in Englewood and Fit Republic gives you 1 to 1 training for the same money. I think the Gym is about $100 a month with no initiation. I have no issue paying for something where I get a superior product or service but I don't like being gouged. Their rates continue to soar, become less flexible to deal with and the turnover on employees is unheard of even in the gym industry. Simply put they aren't worth $140 a month.
