    Halibut.

We are up from the United States visiting our son and stopped in for dinner. We had roasted duck on polenta with braised cabbage, halibut in a delicate sauce and octopus. The food was absolutely amazing, and the service was outstanding. We are returning in the summertime and will certainly come back. One thing we did note, was how pleasant the music was throughout the restaurant. It provides a very nice vibe making these social interaction very enjoyable.

Loved this cute BYOB French place with set menu. Came with a huge group of 10 upon reservations around 9.30pm although they close at 10.30pm. (We stayed until midnight and they were great sports about it. I was very impressed with their patience.) For dinner which (menu) seems to change occasionally I ordered scallops then beef shoulder and chocolate cake dessert. They were all freshly made and delicious. Service was fast (perhaps because we stayed so late) and accomodating. Great way to kick off the NYE weekend.

I tried this byob today and it was pleasant. I'd never heard of it before and though it was new but it seems like I was wrong. They've been around for a while. They have the whole wall made of windows which is nice and luminous. They're actually garage doors so I guess it must all open in summer. Food was nice with fresh ingredients. Nothing overcomplicated but tasty overall. The wild mushroom sautée as appetizer was good and the magret de canard is well-made too. Friendly, casual, with a laid back feeling. I'll probably go back during the summer too.

Grilled octopus and warm goat cheese, honey and hazelnut salad.

Had a fantastic dinner with a friend here last night! The grilled octopus was delicious, as was the goat cheese salad. My friend ordered the salad as well, along with the beef tartar. We were both very pleased! For desert she enjoyed the crème brûlée and I had the butternut squash cake with salted caramel and chai tea, mascarpone and clementines. I am still thinking about how amazing it was this morning. Apart from the food, BYOW was a plus and the service was great. We will be back soon to try a few other things that caught our eyes on the menu! (And for that cake of course)

Beef tartare and duck tartare - delicious!!

The place had such delicious tartare it was unbelievable! We found La Prunelle randomly walking around and were so happy to land our dinner in this nice restaurant. BYOB was not very common to us coming from the US, but the waitress recommended a SAQ store at the corner where we chose the wine to our liking. We had a steak tartare and a duck tartare which was on a specials board for an appetizer and shared rabbit gnuddi for main course with a creme brûlée for dessert. Everything was amazing! It was the best meal we've had in Montreal. I can recommend La Prunelle for a romantic date or a group dinner - we saw large groups popping in with lots of wine brought with them. Our waitress was very nice and was very helpful with the menu. The only thing I would change is adding more music to the place. When we arrived the place was very quiet and only at about 9 pm they put on some music which made the atmosphere even better.

    Lamb tataki

I haven't been to this restaurant in years and then all of a sudden I went twice in less than a week! The first time was for mtl a table. I started with the lamb tataki with foie gras and marinated chanterelles. This was my favorite dish of the night. it was so delicious! I never had lamb tataki before. The slices were very thin. I then had the pork belly with apple & bourbon glaze and the pork filet. The pork belly was better than the pork filet. I found the latter to be more on the dry side which is normal. My aunt had the seared black cod with Jerusalem artichokes chips and grilled corn.I took a bite and it was very good! It was better than some that I've had in Montreal. Lastly we shared the butternut squash cake with salted caramel, chai tea and mascarpone marinated clementine and the crème brulée. Both desserts were very good. The butternut squash cake was similar to carrot cake. I've never had butternut squash cake before but it's good. Good to know that it's not only good in soups Lol. I also went back on the Monday with two of my girl friends for the $1 oysters. I found out about it when I went to reserve online for mtl a table. Once I saw the ad on the La Prunelle website I knew I had to go back because $1 oysters and BYOB is so up my alley!! We had four dozen oysters. They were small and I don't know why but every so often I had peices of the shell in my mouth which I didn't enjoy very much. The oysters itself tasted fine and were fresh but yet $1 oysters at flyjin are so much bigger and better. We also shared three entrées:the grilled octopus , the salmon rillette and the beef tartare. My favorite was the grilled octopus. It was so good!! It was cooked to perfection and there was jalapeno but it wasn't spicy and even squid ink. The salmon rillette is like a paté but wit fish. It was good but prob my least favorite of the three. The beef tartare was also good but nothing special. I recommend this resto if you want a good French BYOB ! It's a good date place or even a resto to drink and eat good food with friends.

This is the chocolate cake slice they dared to serve us. It was sliced so thinly that it ended up being 4 bites total, if that.

We were a pretty large group coming in for a special occasion on a Saturday night. They gave us the 9pm reservation which I guess is fine since it's the second seating and we wouldn't feel rushed. Well no worries there, it took 3 hours to get to the coffee. First thing we were asked when we walked in, "are all 18 of you coming"? I said I think so, though I can't predict in any way if someone won't show up. The waiter looked frustrated with us already. First, they gave our group the regular menu for 30mins. Then, as we thought they were taking our order, the rude waiter came by and just took everyone's menus away. Weird. Then they handed us a group menu, which is relatively the same but some people had to choose something new. I see the differences between the two. At 51$ a person, the group menu plates are embarrassingly small. They should be humiliated to serve that. My fiancé ordered the scallops, and there came only one on his plate. And it was not big. Wild. My duck breast was half a breast, maybe and my potatoes were actually one fingerling potato cut in half.... no vegetables on the plate either. The taste was not enough to save it. A scraping of sauce was given. Finally someone in our group complained to what we presumed was the owner, and she proceeded to blame the guys in the kitchen and saying she's "had enough with these guys". If you're the owner, you decide what goes on the plates, so nice try lady! She tried to offer us more dessert but her attempts at midnight at this point were not welcomed. For a BYOW, prepare to open your own bottles and not see your waiters. Also prepare to hand them your plates as they haven't learned to bend forward and reach yet... a VERY ODD experience all in all. And EXPENSIVE for leaving there starving. If you're looking for this style with a much better execution, try Le Pegase nearby. Good portions and excellent service.

    the lamb shank
    Farin I.

Yumm ine of the best byow restos out in Montreal. Must try the lamb shank if you're looking to get blown away. Aside that loved the area up a nice walk in the plateau and in a small touristy place. They do get jam packed so make sure you reserve ahead. Waiter service attentive and sharp. The ambiance: just cozy and romantic a nice place to chat up with two or 3 friends or a loved one. It really really gets nicer in the night with the dark look and candlelight spotlights ; )

    Sturgeon special.

Got to try some delicious food during my short weekend trip to Montreal Quebec…read more A friend organized a lunch for everyone before we all headed to the airport and funny enough this restaurant was in the hotel my friend and i stayed at. The restaurant was super quiet when we went as it was a Monday afternoon when most people were probably at work. The interior was quite elegant very clean and royalty looking. The service was 10/10. Waiter was very attentive and we could tell he paid attention to detail. He gave great food recommendations and definitely had knowledge of what's on the menu. Now as for how the food and prices were? Prices i'd say are pretty standard and reasonable. The squash soup was so yum and comforting. It had a puree texture to it. Good serving size. I would order it again! We obviously had to have some mimosas and yes we paired it with orange juice. The duck confit may have been a bit too much for me. Large portion and i couldn't even finish half of it. But it wasn't dry and the veggies had a nice crunch and the lentils were very filling and healthy. The flavour notes all went together but i'd definitely say the dish was more on the healthier side. The chicken supreme on the other hand .. although healthy it was still cheesy and buttery. Considering it was chicken breast it didn't even taste dry so i definitely appreciated that. The risotto paired with it was the star of the show! The restaurant takes resos online and they do have brunch on the weekends, happy hour menu looks promising. If i'm ever in town again and in the area i'd want to try their happy hour or chacuterie spread!

(Hotel restaurants, can be good/bad) We were definitely not dressed up which I was worried about but it wasn't an issue, we started with beef carpaccio and charcuterie, the pate was absolutely amazing as were all the cured meats. The beef carpaccio, was for me a little bland, I would have hit it with a touch of salt, but once you got a piece th at had balsamic drizzle it really opened it up and changed my mind. (I wish there was a little more of the balsamic. My husband had the Cornish hen, and I had the filet mignon, both were absolutely amazing, I even stole a little of his Bleu cheese for my steak. Steak was cooked perfectly, the sides were amazing. Our server was on point, his name was Pedro, I had asked him to send out a dessert privately and it was our 1 year anniversary, even though we were not dressed for the occasion as we were both exhausted from travel, We will probably be in for lunch tomorrow!

Even during peak summer season the restaurant was crowded and even had a line starting to form at peak lunch hour. There are not very many large tables so don't expect a large group to be sitting together. The menu is pretty straightforward with the typical miso, tonkotsu, and shoyu broths. But they even have a tomato broth with Hokato scallops for those more adventurous. We ordered the Tonkotsu Black $19 & the Tonkotsu+ $19. Is it pricey for Ramen? Yes. But was it worth it? Yes. The Tonkotsu Black had a rich broth with prominent garlic oil. The Tonkotsu+ was really the show stopper. With 3 different styles of meat: Smoked pork pastrami, meatballs & chashu. The truffle oil was fragrant and earthy. But the biggest surprise was shiitake mushrooms. They were marinated/seasoned to perfection, with a hint of sweetness. I would've been happy with just a giant bowl of shiitake mushrooms, and truffle oil. The broth was much lighter and delicate than the Tonkotsu Black, yet strong on the truffle. If you're not really a fan of truffle, do not get this. We were tempted to go back again, but we opted to try other restaurants around the downtown area. 10/10 Would go back again! But before even checking in, we had to walk through Bar George ~ and instantly knew we wanted to eat there. We were lucky enough to grab a last-minute reservation, and Julien took a good care of us throughout the evening. His recommendation of the Beef Wellington was spot on (it's already one of our favorite dishes), but this was hands down the best we've ever had. I ordered the lobster risotto, which was excellent with just the right amount of spice. My son had the 10 oz striploin steak with homemade fries (chips), and it was absolutely delicious. I also loved the Canadian touch of coarse salt on the steak, plus the option to choose between Béarnaise or peppercorn sauce. Julien also mentioned their pastry chef placed second in a NY competition, and the desserts absolutely lived up to that reputation. We tried the pineapple and coconut pavlova and the "lick me hazelnut" ~ both beautifully presented and incredibly delicious. We also ordered iced coffee and a latte, and noticed something interesting: this was the second place where we found Canadian coffee to be smooth and mild ~ such a nice change from the often bitter, over-roasted American coffee. Yes, dinner was a bit steep ($300+), but it was worth every penny. Between the rich history, stunning design, outstanding service, and unique cuisine, I would highly recommend Bar George.
