Like so many others, my family and I have been coming to Amachi's for over 30 years. We love grandma. She is so warm and welcoming. During the pandemic we continued to visit whether for takeout or to eat outside. Now it appears there are new owners because things have changed. Another reviewer claims a reservation for two requires a $100 minimum purchase! The quality and quantity of some plates has dropped quite a bit. I asked for extra salad dressing and was told a bottle can be provided for five dollars! The menu states you'll be charged for extra rice! What's happened here? I understand an increase in pricing. I'm sorry grandma but we may not be coming by as much anymore. read more

Been coming to Amachis for 30+ years. It's simple, consistent and always good. Decor hasn't changed, so don't expect fancy, however prices are still reasonable, considering how much everything costs nowadays. Service is excellent and everyone is so friendly! Its friends they are friendly and it is family owned. My children come here also they grew up on Amachi's. Try it you will love it. Thanks YELP once again for assisting in a new restaurant to try. My buddies and I were in the neighborhood and was looking for a quick, simple Japanese lunch close to where we needed to be for work. I never knew there was a small downtown Whittier area. Free parking, plentiful street parking (was there before 12pm) around Amachi. The lunch specials were super cheap ($6 for a lunch combo with sashimi). Even though the portions were a bit small, it was worth the price. The meal itself was pretty good also. The 3 of us all had lunch specials and ended up ordering a 4th lunch special to split. The teriyaki beef was good. The tuna sashimi slices were fresh, the beef sukiyaki noodles smelled and tasted good. The curry lunch special wasn't too shabby also. The place was inside was kind of small since there were 2 big tables in for lunch. The service was pretty good but a bit slow at times (I think because they were busy). All in all a good experience. Amachi is kind of hidden, but do look for them. They don't have much of a sign on the outside. So good luck! We found it without a problem. read more

First and foremost.... When you walk in it feels like you're walking into home. Greeted by such friendly staff. I thought I was coming to a friends house for dinner. Sat down and drinks were served within minutes. Ordered my food... thought about getting appetizers size I was hungry. Miso soup and Sunonomo came out super quick. Help me not starve. The best Japanese comfort food. If you grew up with homemade Japanese food, this place is guaranteed to hit home. My family and I have been coming here for years, close to 20 years. My favorite is the sukiyaki, even on hot days I can eat all of it. The combination plate is a close second. Tempura is not over fried or soggy, it has a great crunch on the outside and soft vegetable or shrimp on the inside. So glad they are open and happy to see bachan again! read more

Love love love Amachi's. It's located behind mimo's towards the alley/parking lot, but it is definitely a hidden gem. The service is always fast and friendly. But avoid coming here on weekends because the wait tends to be kinda long and since there is no room to wait inside, you'll be standing around outside until there is a table. Once you're actually seated and decide what to order your food starts to arrive pretty quickly. First they bring out miso soup and sunomono. For the main course I usually go with family platter "A" which includes beef and chicken teriyaki, soup, salad, tempura and rice, unless it's lunch time, because they have awesome lunch specials. I like this place. For those who grew up in the 80s and 90s, you will notice the furnitures and layout to be extremely nostalgic. It evoked a lot of my youth memories from the decoration to the nice grandma waitress and the homemade style food. It's definitely a great dating spot for people who has the capacity to go back in time to a pre fast food Chinese restaurant era. the food was okay, not bad but not great - very forgetful. But hey, you get a whole combo plus tax for 11$. Hell, you can even afford to splurge on one or two more appetizers to show off to your "date."
