Another amazing visit to Dakara! Today I of course had to have oysters in a spoon. The tangy, savory salty sauce is soooo refreshing and addicting. I always have to order the Ankimo sushi. It's one of my favorite, it's also savory, a little tart with creamy texture. I had the black snapper, which is another go-to. I love the ponzu/salty basted on top. I had the tuna with Japanese salsa on top and the soy butter albacore for the first time. I have my favorites that I reorder but I try to make sure I order something new to try with each visit. The tuna was so tender and fresh. The lemony salsa on top was vibrant and flavorful. I asked for a spoon so I could scoop every drop. The albacore was also very tender and the soy butter was creamy and so light. It didn't leave like a buttery or oily residual on the palate. Everything is always delicious. A friend took us here for a late lunch and I must say I am very impressed with this place! The quality of fish and freshness is superb- I've eaten a lot of raw fish and let's say this is one of the freshest I've had! We had a slew of nigiri's and sashimis from the daily special menu but I would say my favorites were probably the waygu, king salmon, black snapper and toro. The restaurant itself is not huge with about a dozen tables and is located in a strip mall where you would not expect to find such a high caliber of food. The owner of the restaurant is also the chef I believe. He greeted us warmly when we entered and conversed with us throughout our dining experience. I recently came here for dinner. It's a small place with lots of charm. The food is good and fresh. We ordered several rolls, tempura and a collar. The tempura had a good variety and the batter was light and crispy. All the rolls were good. My only thing was that a lot of their rolls have shrimp. My mom is allergic to shrimp so it was hard finding several rolls that didn't have shrimp. We got a collar too. Everything was delicious. Because it's a small place, they only had one person taking orders, one person helping with bussing and then two staff in the kitchen. They are attentive but can be a little slow at times. Dakara isn't just the best sushi in Whittier. It's the best RESTAUARANT in Whittier. It's run by great people, with real ties to the community, serving up some of the most delicious, wonderfully textured, and deliberately designed dishes around. They have the BALLS and the utmost confidence in their product to tell you not to use any other sauce on their perfectly dressed artisan nigiri, and if you trust them, you'll be treated to some of the best bites of food in a 20 mile radius. Thank God - they actually understand good sushi and have a wonderfully balanced, craveable sushi rice. Not too sweet, still retains a wonderful, individual-kernel-perceivable texture, and has the kind of flavor that requires you to put another bite of it into your mouth. Their spicy tuna is undoubtedly the best textured and most flavorful spicy tuna I've ever had anywhere. Get their grilled mackerel and the yellowtail collar and treat yourself to some of the juiciest, most unctuous fish around and pair it with the perfect pairing of Japanese steamed rice. This came with miso soup, salad and rice. I enjoyed every bite, great California roll and yummy selection of dish. My wife and daughter had the Mixed Chicken Teriyaki & Mixed Tempura which came with miso soup, salad and rice. We know this place has been around for a long time, but since moving here in July, we were excited to see it reopen and are happy to give them our business. I'd definitely say their dinner options are a step up from the usual takeout places nearby. I really enjoyed dining in--some items, like the tuna tostada, seem better suited for enjoying on-site rather than for takeout. The quality of the fish is excellent, and I appreciate that they keep the menu concise, which ensures freshness. Anything brought in extra is featured on the specials board, which is a nice touch. Quality over quantity. This sushi spot is delicious. The portions are small but packed with so much flavor. My favorite was the albacore shrimp tempura roll. We generally order shrimp dumplings, chili edamame, rainbow role, snow crab, king crab (when they have it), ceviche, eel, and tea. Food is delish. We only have sushi from 2 places in LA/OC. I don't even know how to start this review...I have driven to this place 3 times from Montebello and it has NEVER been open. Different days of the week, different times, for different occasions and levels of hunger. Today, when I decided to write the review, was a day when I only had breakfast and was really looking forward to sushi. I've lived in Whittier nearly all my life, but for a gap in between, and I only just discovered this gem. Took a coworker here recently for her birthday and we were wowed, bite after bite. Rice temp, texture, and ph were perfect...I know, strange to be commenting on the rice when the sushi is the main character in this plot, but that is to point out that details matter here. For the record, the sushi is phenomenal; fresh, generous, artistically, and thoughtfully displayed. We had the miso soup, shishito peppers, seaweed salad, fried oysters, yellowtail collar, chirashi bowl, yellow tail, toro, red snapper, king crab sushi (with a "C," not with a "K"), Albacore (maybe the best I've had in my life, ever), salmon, two rolls I can't remember names of right at the moment, and To-Die-For uni, my ultimate barometer for any sushi restaurant (if the uni is so-so, the rest will most likely be as well). Geez...what didn't we try?! And the service was exemplary--attentive and respectfully present, yet not intrusive. I've been making every excuse to return soon. In fact, we just renamed Tuesday as Dakara Day. * * * For those negative comments regarding quality, that's entirely your experience and your tastes are your tastes, but when addressing lack of quantity, that just brings to mind a gluttonous, entitled, ugly American, expecting a Costco platter of sushi for nothing--especially those lamenting that they don't do all-you-can-eat.
