Having never really treated myself to a "fancy" dinner in Cork, I was a bit stumped when it came to naming a place for dinner out with my visiting mother (embarrassingly enough!). Two friends had recommended 14A, but I had no idea where to find it - but hey, Cork isn't that big, right? Wrong. After about 20 minutes of searching, we were almost ready to give up.. until we finally stumbled upon it, buried in one of those tricky alleyways by Tesco! It was relatively quiet when we walked in, save the very obnoxious utensil-separating that was going on behind the close-by counter for about fifteen minutes. But, the calming, simple interior and mouth-watering menu made up for it, and my mind was soon clouded by thoughts of the savignon blanc, vegetable puree, and grilled seabass that were coming my way! The food was amazing. A-mazing. The seabass was the special of the night, and it was served with mashed potatoes and snap peas - a combination I wouldn't have expected. The savignon blanc was also a feature on the charming chalkboard of specials, and it was even described to match certain meals on the menu. The soup was great as well, but what practically overshadowed it was the bread slices that came alongside; it turns out that 14A bakes their own bread, and it is, by far, the best I have had in Cork. We even bought a loaf when we were done with our meal; however, pricing was a bit weird: an extra side of bread with our meal was about €3.50, and the loaf was only €1.50..? We were so contented with 14A, we went two nights out of the five my mom was in Cork. The second time we visited, I ordered the merlot, puree of the night, and 8 oz. ribeye steak.. again, so delicious. The steak was cooked perfectly, and I could not get enough of the sauteed onions and mushrooms and mashed potatoes that came with. We indulged a bit more and split a piece of warm apple pie, which was topped with some Corkonian fresh cream. Deee-lightful! The "3 Courses for €20" was an awesome deal, and you were even allowed to switch out a starter or desert for a glass of wine, if you preferred. The only complaint I would have was that the place is a bit echo-y; the first incident with the loud silverware-separating hardly compared to the large group that had a reservation on our second night in. Nonetheless, I think that I could have just been a little hangry - all was made better upon arrival of soup and wine! 14A, you get my A+.

Lovely and simple venue! Great 3 course deal for €20. You can substitute your entre or dessert for a glass of wine instead. They have a nice patio that you can eat and smoke on and a great space inside for indoor eating as well.

Getting breakfast here a lot, at the beginning they had awesome fresh bread, then for a while they served ordinary toast, but they returned to quite good bread. That was a good choice. The staff is always friendly, but not always attentive, sometimes slow. Overall a good experience.

So I will first lead off with: this probably wasn't the right place to get fish and chips... Cause they were terrible. TERRIBLE. Soggy batter. Tough fish. Terrible tartar sauce. We asked the waiter to make a vegan veg and rice. It came out completely unseasoned. Like completely unseasoned. Even for specifically asking for them to just season it. But it was off menu so I guess I can't really blame them. However the pesto sole was really good. The grilled fillet of John Dory special was dry. The mushroom soup was described as a 7/10. For a 5 star place I was very disappointed.

Chicken breast sandwich

I went here for lunch and got the chicken sandwich and chips. The food was very nice and the service was very good. The staff were friendly and there was a nice atmosphere. Would definitely recommend for brunch and lunch!

The seafood chowder had huge chunks of fish and was perfect meal in a cold rainy day. If you love people watching, this is a great place.

The market is a bustling bee hive of produce farmers, butchers, chocolatiers, of local and organic fresh food to include spices and an abundance of gastro delights from afar. The all wood construction and arched ceiling of this 18th century building make it visually appealing to add to the sensory adventure of fresh and cooking food. Farmgate is a bit small as most European cafes are but was rich in its menu offerings! I made reservations via Open Table for lunch for myself and was greeted at the stairs as seating goes all around an atrium open air looking down on the market below. My server carefully considered my food intolerance to gluten and dairy and made sure I was ok with butter, the service was top notch, not rushed and not invasive as I sat and slowly sipped in the scenery and scents. I ordered a chicken with lentils, parsnips, and carrots and the chicken was herbed nicely, moist and succulent served over tasty lentils that were not bitter but light and full of flavor, buttery parsnips and carrots not overcooked. I had some extra vegetables as a replacement for the mashed potatoes as they have cream in them and the veggies were crisp and fresh. The menu options are extensive for the size of the kitchen and obviously benefit from having fresh seafood, butchers and produce downstairs such that they had some of everything on the menu! You can tell the cook/chef takes pride in his preparation and the presentation was artistic as well. The thick wooden tables and height ceilings gave this place a feeling of long standing history and the staff appeared pleased to work there in this historic setting, making good fresh local food to share. I highly recommend this cafe as a must do for Cork! The prices were very reasonable, the service and food came without an arduous wait, a memorable experience in a town of high food standards!

During our entire stay, as my friends had joined about 10 minutes after I was seated and had already ordered drinks, the employee just kept throwing glances and staring at us the entire time. We were all ordering, so it wasn't like we were holding a table hostage. We did get good service from the waiter, although he didn't come around as often, even when we were out of drinks. Kudos to the whisky sommelier for giving us great suggestions. It's a quirky bar/restaurant, but I'm not sure it would be worth a return trip. The employee with the attitude was really unnerving.

Next the musicians played the bodhrán, an Irish drum. Finally, the musicians invited about six members of the audience to learn how to play the bodhrán. Overall the music quality was excellent. The food was also satisfying. I had the chicken and chorizo pie which came with a small side salad dressed in honey mustard and a small portion of roasted potatoes. My friends really enjoyed the pork ribs. The waitress was awesome she split the bill for our entire group!
