I was told by locals to try the seafood at Greenes in Cork, a hidden away cloth napkin restaurant with a waterfall feature and left impressed, satisfied and happy I went. From the entrance where the host took my coat upon arrival to the comfortable seating that was spacious it felt like dinning in a luxury hotel. The scallops appetizer was the best I've ever had, so fresh, light, tender and flavorful , even better than Legal Seafood in Boston! The sea bass was cooked perfectly and also fresh, the presentation of both dishes was well done, artistic and the items all added to the flavor profile. The waiter and waitress were eager to please, knowledgeable of the menu and ensured my gluten and dairy intolerance were considered. I had some Chilean cab that was delicious and the server confirmed a good pairing. The service didn't feel rushed and the sea bass came warm and not too dry. This is a place you cannot see from the sidewalk or street and so truly a hidden gem! The prices were reasonable for the quality of food, service and atmosphere.

My hotel recommended this restaurant and it was a pleasant surprise. They offer a tasting menu or a la Carte and we chose a la carte. There's not many options to choose from but the mushroom risotto caught my attention and my husband decided on the lamb. The complementary bread and butter was delicious, we finished it all! My husband said the lamb chops were probably the best he ever had and my risotto was also very good. The best meal we had in Ireland so far, highly recommend.

We've been to this establishment on a number of occasions and it never disappoints. This time we had a party of nine. The service was very good and everyone enjoyed their meals. We ordered from the prefix menu, they do have a seven course tasting menu available. I would definitely recommend this place.

I cannot give Greenes enough stars. Everything here redefined expectations. The service was not on - professional and attentive, but not stuffy. The ambiance was beautiful. There's a small waterfall right outside one window, and a beautiful, small garden outside the other window. And the food. Wow, the food was magnificent. It all started with the bread and butter. 3 different kinds of homemade artisanal bread, served with deliciously creamy butter perched on a stone. The presentation was perfect - creative, elegant, simple. And that was just the bread. I ordered the pork belly stater and the roasted hake & scallops entree. Before these dishes arrived, I was served three petite amuse bouches: a duck liver paté with wasabi seeds and cherry, a warm and juicy beef ball, and a crisp. Each was incredibly tasty. The pork belly with daikon radish and apple was melt in my mouth scrumptious. Little balls of puffed pork crackling provided a delightful and unexpected crunch.  Between my started and main, I was ordered with another surprise: a lychee and lime foam palate cleanser. And mission accomplished. My palate was both cleansed and tickled. What a wonderful way to cut through the fat of my pork belly and prepare me for my seafood entree. My entree did not disappoint. Super fresh hake and scallops paired with a light cream sauce and smoked sausage. Delicious. I left with my belly feeling incredible happy and full.

Creme Brûlée from the lunch menu

I was in Cork last weekend for the Cork Jazz Festival 2015. I was really excited to try Greenes Restaurant as I had read Bryan McCarthy, the head chef had won chef of the year in Cork 2015. We came here for lunch on a Saturday afternoon and I'm not sure why, perhaps something to do with the Jazz festival, but the place was completely empty except for us. The staff seemed to be setting up for an event around us and to be honest we were very close to walking out because it took far too long for us to be served. Anyway thankfully, the food made up for the shortcomings of the staff. I got the cured salmon to start which came with a foam and it was mouth watering. We both had the featherblade steak for our main course which had been slow cooked for several hours. This was served with kale and a carrot puree. This was really nice, but in my opinion, didn't really keep up with the quality of the starter. Finally we shared the creme brûlée for our dessert. This was also mouth watering. Overall our experience at Greenes was a little bit dissapointing. I'm sure it is a very nice venue during the evening and perhaps it is more of a dinner restaurant but in my opinion it lacked the wow factor I had been anticipating.

My girlfriend and I had the pleasure to eat at Greenes last April. We could not expect anything better: three courses menú (25€), affordable wine and impeccable service. Moreover, we got the table in front of the waterfall that made the lunch simply special. The dishes were beautifully made and decorated, with a touch of innovation which I found bravery and interesting.

Excellent restaurant with good cocktail. Wine choice not as good. Next to a few other popular bars.

Twice, we had to ask other wait staff for assistance and both times they were very attentive. The "southern fried Chicken Wings" tasted warmed up and flavorless. My wife ordered a medium filet that showed up well past done. The presentation was bush league and we sent it back. The second pass was slightly better; edible. I ordered the lamb. The lamb was cooked perfectly; though under seasoned. I probably would have had no problem with the lamb had the other issues I mentioned been absent. To sum it up, the reputation this restaurant has, was absolutely not our experience.

The ambiance is definitely more upscale and service from staff was quite good. For my entreé I had the duck confit with a local cider. The duck was tender and had a good flavor to it. We had a sticky toffee pudding for dessert, and while it was very good, having it accompanied with creme instead of ice cream was a bit disappointing, as the pudding itself was quite rich. All and all, it was a great experience at a good price, and I'd recommend it.

The market is a bustling bee hive of produce farmers, butchers, chocolatiers, of local and organic fresh food to include spices and an abundance of gastro delights from afar. The all wood construction and arched ceiling of this 18th century building make it visually appealing to add to the sensory adventure of fresh and cooking food. Farmgate is a bit small as most European cafes are but was rich in its menu offerings! I made reservations via Open Table for lunch for myself and was greeted at the stairs as seating goes all around an atrium open air looking down on the market below. My server carefully considered my food intolerance to gluten and dairy and made sure I was ok with butter, the service was top notch, not rushed and not invasive as I sat and slowly sipped in the scenery and scents. I ordered a chicken with lentils, parsnips, and carrots and the chicken was herbed nicely, moist and succulent served over tasty lentils that were not bitter but light and full of flavor, buttery parsnips and carrots not overcooked. I had some extra vegetables as a replacement for the mashed potatoes as they have cream in them and the veggies were crisp and fresh. The menu options are extensive for the size of the kitchen and obviously benefit from having fresh seafood, butchers and produce downstairs such that they had some of everything on the menu! You can tell the cook/chef takes pride in his preparation and the presentation was artistic as well. The thick wooden tables and height ceilings gave this place a feeling of long standing history and the staff appeared pleased to work there in this historic setting, making good fresh local food to share. I highly recommend this cafe as a must do for Cork! The prices were very reasonable, the service and food came without an arduous wait, a memorable experience in a town of high food standards!
