First night in Cork. My wife and I tried Gallaghers. The place was full on a Sunday night so we had a drink at the bar while we waited for a table, took about 15 minutes and we were seated. There are a lot of pubs in cork but if you must visit any it should be Gallangers. I love the setup here the bar is huge and the rocking bit we chose to sit at a table. We were immediately greeted and placed drink orders. I had the espresso martini. This was not your typical espresso martini it was so good and very very strong. For dinner I ordered the Guinness pie and my Friend got the seafood pie. Both were delicious but the Guinness pie was exceptional. I love to share food but did not want to share this. I wanted to savor every bite. O ate the entire pie and its was huge but so good. Couldn't pass up sticky toffee pudding and my goodness am o glad I somehow managed to find the room. When we walked in the restaurant was relatively empty with at least 6 free tables for 2 people available. The host selected the table next to the door to the restroom. Really?! I kindly asked him to change the table which he did. I selected the Vegetable Pakora for my starter. It was truly unsatisfying. The pieces were deeply fried and overly bready, with just a small amount of veggie inside. The apple chutney was delicious, the other chutney offerings were boring. Our mains included the special fish, a delicious and generous piece of salmon. It was really delicious. The accompanying shrimp were tasty. The bed of rice upon which the fish tested was meh. My wife had the duo of seabass and prawns. The prawns were nearly tasteless in her opinion and the bass was a disappointment. The bed of pasta was also not very good either. The ambience was nice enough but the tables were quite close to one another and really didn't afford much privacy. But we did get to know our neighbors! read more

The fish itself needed seasoning but the risotto was delicious! The beef pie was very bland and needed seasoning and the fish and chips was good. I think I would come back but maybe just for apps and a drink. We shared a meat pie and sautéed spinach. The meat pie had very tender chunks of beef and root vegetables. The gravy was well flavored and the fries arrived crispy and hot. One pie and the spinach was enough for a light lunch for two. I wrapped up my meal with a nice Irish coffee. The staff were friendly and just attentive enough. The bartender was a delight to watch as he carefully and artfully crafted the drinks. My dessert was a bit tougher than I expected, was really dry inside but the pie and mash I had were fantastic.
