    Monk fish was outstanding

Service was great! Bevin waited on us and she was awesome! I would highly recommend! My husband had the sole and my daughter had the prawns, all were fantastic!

    Burger & lasagne

I liked my lasagna and merlot. My husband thought the burger portion was bigger than most restaurants here. Funnily enough - we accidentally spilled a drink on a couple and paid for their drink and then in return, after they found out it was our honeymoon, the couple covered our meal!

We were in town on Mother's Day and were lucky to find a table here. The food was very well done and well presented. I had the monk fish as I love the texture. It was nice medallions lightly breaded and in a very nice sauce served with rice. The wife had the mussels. They were excellent, a huge bowl in a wonderful cream sauce. Served with fries and salad. The restaurant is a nice room and the service very good. I found out later that the original chef from here started fishy fishy wich is the predominant restaurant in town. This is a viable alternative if you can't get in there

Our first time here and in Kinsdale. There was a Rugby tournament this weekend so a lot of places were not serving good. Fortunately for us Jim Edwards was open and it did not disappoint. I haven't had a lot of oysters in my life but these were by far the best and the biggest. My wife had the chicken and it was amazing as well. Nice, chill, coastal vibe inside. And they do Whiskey flights!

Looking around town for a place to eat, and found this. It's a nice, quiet place, pretty roomy as well. Our server was nice, and it didn't take long to get our food. I got a burger, which I was craving, and really liked it. My family liked their food as well, and we want to stop again next time we come to Ireland.

We stumbled onto this restaurant during our trip to Ireland from the States. By FAR the best meal we've had. Steak cooked to perfection, juicy burger and a pork specialty that was absolutely delicious. Terrific wine and desserts. Service was beyond exceptional. Cannot recommend enough!!!

Crab cakes...97% crab 3% breading = WIN :D (purely guesstimates)

BEST RESTAURANT IN IRELAND! During a our romantic walk along Kinsale bay, an old friendly local Irishman walking his adorable terrier reccommended this restaurant...thank old man! We immediately got a table, but the place was pretty packed for off season so I'd make a reservation if you're coming in the summer. Three Course Meals for 25 euro...Best Deal in Ireland! Lots of choices! Course 1: Crab Cakes...mostly crab and barely any breading. Yum! Course 2: Sirlion Steak...FYI: all beef in Ireland is Grass Fed. Yum! (extra 3e) Course 3: Apple Pie with Cream...best Apple Pie! Better than anything in Julian, CA. 2 Course Meals for 20 euro... pick an Appetizer or Dessert. Wife got this. Course 1: Seafood Chowder...yum! Course 2: Pan Fried Hake...yum! Better than my steak... The meals also came with 3 sides to share: Chips, Steamed Veggies, and probably the best scalloped potatoes I've ever had!. 5.50euro wine glass for the wife, and a tasty 3.90 Beamish stout beer, kinda like a Guiness, for me. Nice service, and probably the best meal we had in Ireland! For only 56.40euro! I still have mouthgasmic fantasies about that Apple Pie...

    Steak Sandwich
    Shawn A.

Great little pub and restaurant in Kinsale. After a long day of driving this hit the spot for a late lunch. I opted for the Steak Sandwich with onions. The steak was cooked to a perfect medium rare and the onions had a great sauté to them. I didn't add anything to the sandwich and the juice from the meat and onions packed the roll with extra flavor. The roll was crunchy on the outside but super soft inside. The steak was sliced and not shoved so you ended up with big strips of meat in each bite. My son said the burger and the wings were great. My wife enjoyed the warm chicken and bacon salad.

Not perfect but I still recommend it wholeheartedly and would love to return. We made a reservation for 6:00 and for a little while we were the only ones there. Did we even need a reservation? Yes. It was full by the time we left. And I'm sure summer is harder. There's a small selection of wines by the glass, all of which I've never heard of, mostly of European origin. We both liked our López De Heredia tempranillo and I chose the same when I had a second glass. The menu is prix-fix, sort of. Starter plus main for €49 - though there's a small surcharge for some items, like my scallops appetizer. Dessert is extra but inexpensive in comparison (€7-8) If you're a picky eater be sure to check the menu before coming and make sure something appeals. There's nothing crazy weird here but the selection is small. We had no trouble with the menu choices. My Sauté Scallops starter was prepared with venison broth, lovage, celeriac, Coppa ham, Irish Winter Chanterelles, wild leeks, peas, and cream and was truly excellent and very pretty. I particularly liked the slight caramelization of the tops of the scallops, the subtle flavors and textures of the vegetables, and how the broth flavor changed as the cream (which was apparently whipped) slowly melted in. The wife's Baked Goat's Cheese, with wilted leeks, roast butternut squash, pumpkin seed, confit of shallots in red wine, and hazelnut oil was also excellent, and beautiful. My main was Slow Cooked Irish Pork Belly: hint of 5 spice, rhubarb puree, carrot with lovage, braised local cabbage. I did like it, especially how all these different flavors somehow worked together (5-spice, rhubarb, and lovage - who knew!) And I finally figured out that the crusty part on top wasn't overly dried fat to be removed but a layer of sugar, caramelized, dark brown and which shattered like glass when cut into. Very intriguing. What I didn't like about it was the haphazard presentation - the various ingredients arrayed around the plate in random fashion with a single chive thrown on top seemingly as an afterthought - and that the portion was a bit small for an entree (as was the wife's, while both the starters were generously sized). The wife's main was Pan Fried Irish Lamb Cutlets, with chestnut mushrooms, Meli-Melo of vegetables, Sacred Basil Jus. What is meli-melo? French for mess or jumble, but it sounds better, right? As for the sacred basil, it's Indian and has a spicy, peppery, clove-like flavor not like the kind we're accustomed to. Perfectly cooked lamb cutlets and intriguing flavors but like my entree I thought it was too small (but she was fine with it and even gave me some!) All entrees are served with a side of steamed local potatoes, adorned with just a slight salt crust and chopped chives. I know Ireland is famous for potatoes but this seems rather gimmicky to me. Dessert selection is very limited. Just 3 that day: Sticky Toffee Pudding, Bourbon Vanilla Crème Brulèe, and a cheese/fruit/nut plate. I've been on a Sticky Toffee Pudding kick lately so I tried that. It was good but nothing special despite their attempts to make it differently. The pear and date compote was too subtle and as for the toffee & green cardamon sauce: I think I liked but there wasn't nearly enough of it. The pudding part was also small for that matter. As for ambience, it was a nice relaxing setting, even as the room filled up, our small table was by the window and had an assortment of fresh flowers in a vase and a real candle. Our waiter was ok but would only say that the green in the salad we asked about was "some kind of lettuce I think", though on pressing him he did ask the chef who said it was winter purslane. I suspect he's new and will eventually learn how to better handle challenging diners such as ourselves.

My sister has been craving lobster but it's not on any menus. We were seated at a great window table, and they said there was an added starter which was a grilled half lobster. SOLD x 3. It's a fixed price with many choices. One had the sea bass, one the pork belly and one the lamb. All were unbelievably great with beautiful sides, and because it's Ireland, a bowl of salted roasted potatoes. We split a bottle of great wine and made the trip back to our B&B in about 30 seconds! Max's is near the harbor and city parking on Main Street. Best meal of our trip so far, and we've eaten out for 2 1/2 weeks.

Ambiance was classy and we also did not feel inappropriately dressed in our jeans and sweatshirts (having just traveled from the Highlands in Scotland to Edinburgh to Dublin to Kinsale in a single day!) Service was chatty and friendly and kind. It was a bit noisy but not so much so that my partner and I could not hear each other. The food I had was fantastic: - Caesar salad - 5**/5 this is hands down the best Caesar salad I've ever had. I know that sounds weird to rate a basic Caesar but the lettuce was crisp and fresh and the dressing with just the right anchovy balance and ratio to the leaves and I loved the croutons (I usually skip them). Big enough for two to share. - special monkfish filets with beetroot - 5/5 outstanding dish with delicate flavors and two generous filets, especially good if you like beets! Came with crispy potatoes in a side dish which I appreciated because the beets didn't get them wet and they stayed crispy - west cork scallops 4/5, 8 generous scallops in the dish on an English pea risotto only downgraded because the risotto was not fully cooked - the rice was a bit crunchy in spots - strawberries and cream dessert - 4/5, only because for 9.95 that's a lot for a small bowl of berries and I do compare my strawberries to California farm fresh ones so that's a tough comparison Loved Kinsale and loved Fishy Fishy and hope to be back to both!

The waiter said there was a problem in the kitchen. My daughter in law's steak was severely undercooked. The arancini was not cooked enough. The first round of this appetizer was cooked well. We ordered 2 more of this dish. The rice in this round of rice balls was undercooked and crunchy. The lobster bisque was the best food I ate here. It went downhill from the first round of appetizers. The food was mostly average. We expected much more from this highly rated restaurant. The manager never came over to asked about our experience.. The wait staff seemed very stressed. We didn't ask but there was no adjustment offered to our bill and we ordered 3 rounds of drinks. Not worth the wait. Not worth the money. A big disappointment.
